Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Merrit’s new proposal offered payment for one hundred dungeon admissions.

The Thousand Works would select the visitors, cover their entry costs, and receive a reduced rate in exchange for purchasing access in advance. Resurrection would follow whatever rules Sanctuary normally applied to the level entered.

The contract avoided promising resurrection outside Max’s territory.

It created a different problem.

”He wants to become the customer and make his people the benefit.” Anna said.

Max agreed.

An individual entering Sanctuary chose whether to accept the dungeon’s risks. Merrit’s agreement would allow him to purchase a block of opportunities and decide who received them. He could reward favored crafters, require employees to participate, or resell places at a higher price.

”The people could still refuse.” Hizon said.

”Could they refuse without losing whatever Merrit offered with the place?” Anna asked.

Hizon considered it.

A Dungeon Master who controlled employment, workshop access, and entry allocation could make a voluntary opportunity difficult to decline without issuing a direct order.

”Then sell admissions only to the person entering.” Hizon said. ”Merrit can reimburse them afterward if he wants.”

”He wants the discount.” Max replied.

”He wants control.” Quin said.

The contract keeper had removed every clause the previous discussion made impossible. Merrit’s motivation remained visible through the structure. He wanted predictable access and the ability to direct scarce opportunities toward people he considered valuable.

Max rejected the bulk agreement.

Merrit requested a direct discussion instead of sending another revision.

”Predictability is not control for its own sake.” he said through the exchange room. ”My workshops schedule apprentices months ahead. If access depends on each person buying admission when they arrive, I cannot build training around it.”

”Then reserve training dates without reserving people.” Anna replied.

Merrit paused.

Sanctuary could hold a limited number of entries for the Thousand Works. Merrit could announce the opportunity, reimburse fees, and prepare participants. The actual admissions would remain attached to named individuals who confirmed their choice with Sanctuary.

”Unused places?” he asked.

”Return to public availability three days before the date.” Max said.

”A worker could accept my preparation and withdraw after I have paid for it.”

”Yes.”

”Without owing the workshop?”

”You can pay for completed training. You cannot turn dungeon entry into a debt.”

Merrit disliked paying for preparation he might not use. Anna disliked any agreement that made fear financially punishable. Neither concern was imaginary.

Hizon proposed that the Thousand Works reimburse training after each preparation session, whether or not the person later entered the dungeon. Merrit gained workers with useful instruction. Participants owed nothing for deciding the risk was wrong for them.

”Less efficient.” Merrit said.

”More honest.” Anna replied.

They settled on twenty reserved entry opportunities during the trial, no volume discount, and individual confirmation required each time.

Merrit had not obtained the control he wanted. He had obtained enough predictability to plan.

[Visitors from the Thousand Works may enter under the same rules as other eligible visitors. Each person accepts the risk individually. You may pay their ordinary costs, but payment grants you no authority over their participation, resurrection choices, or afterlife time.]

Merrit responded with one question.

[Do Sanctuary guilds pay entry costs for their members?]

[Yes.]

[Then the practical difference is whether you trust the institution paying.]

Max did not dismiss the criticism.

Guilds funded training attempts, equipment, and entry for parties. Employers could do the same. Payment itself did not remove choice.

[The difference is the contract.] Max replied. [A guild paying an ordinary cost receives no bulk control and no guaranteed allocation. Your agreement makes access an asset owned by the Thousand Works.]

Merrit revised the proposal again.

The Thousand Works would establish a voluntary training fund. Individuals applied for reimbursement after accepting Sanctuary’s normal rules. Merrit could set eligibility for his own funds but gained no ownership of the admission or result.

Max approved the structure.

Anna read the final version.

”He found a way to support the same people without owning the opportunity.”

”And without receiving the discount.” Hizon said.

Merrit complained about the price and opened the fund anyway.

Demand increased.

Craftspeople wanted to study Sanctuary’s traps and constructed environments. Redoubt soldiers wanted the Stone Brace’s experience. Merchants wanted to visit the exchange market. Adventurers already in Sanctuary heard that other dungeons had connected and asked whether they could travel in the opposite direction.

Max refused to open unrestricted traffic.

The exchange gate had operated safely for weeks. Safe operation at a small scale did not prove that continuous crowds would remain manageable.

Hizon argued for expansion.

”Every scheduled opening fills before the list closes. Undercity merchants are selling materials faster than they can replace them. Repair shops have orders for Thousand Works equipment.”

”Are residents losing access to supplies?” Max asked.

”Not yet.”

”Prices?”

Hizon showed him the figures.

Several materials had risen sharply because foreign crafters bought them in bulk. Undercity merchants profited. Local repair houses paid more for the same stock.

”The trade can make the district richer while making its ordinary services worse.” Max said.

”Then reserve local supply.” Hizon replied.

He proposed minimum inventory requirements before merchants exported materials used by Undercity businesses. The rule limited immediate profit and protected the customers who made the district prosperous before the gate existed.

Hizon supported the restriction because he wanted growth that survived the exchange, not a brief rush that emptied his market.

The Undercity continued doing well. Foreign trade did not transform it into Sanctuary’s largest economic center. It added another source of customers and another risk Hizon had to manage.

Veyrath opposed longer gate hours for a different reason.

Every opening required guards, inspectors, and emergency readiness. Expanding traffic meant either assigning more soldiers or training civilian exchange staff to handle ordinary checks.

Hizon offered to fund civilian staff through transaction fees.

Veyrath wanted them under defensive authority.

”A merchant cannot decide whether an object threatens the dungeon.” he said.

”A soldier does not need to inspect every invoice.” Hizon replied.

They divided the work. Civilian clerks handled identities, declared goods, schedules, and payments. Defensive inspectors handled active magic, creatures, constructs, and anything that did not match its declaration. Either could stop an entry pending review.

Kildra requested access to the accumulated visitor questions.

Quin refused the full records.

”You need security-relevant patterns, not every commercial inquiry.”

”A harmless inquiry becomes relevant when combined with five others.” Kildra said.

”Then identify the categories you need.”

Kildra wanted questions about routes, schedules, defensive staffing, restricted territories, core functions, resurrection mechanisms, and the locations of decision-makers. He did not need private contract terms or medical information.

Quin created a limited report.

The result identified one Thousand Works crafter who had asked separate people about the distance between the receiving room and hospital. The questions could have been simple interest in emergency response. Kildra wanted the pattern recorded without accusing the crafter of espionage.

Max agreed.

”Behavior can justify attention without proving intent.” he said.

The visitor received no punishment. Future questions touching restricted routes would be answered through the exchange office rather than scattered staff.

Dagar requested permission for Sanctuary adventurers to visit the Redoubt’s new training grounds.

The grounds had completed internal trials. Their exercises taught wall movement, supply defense, formation withdrawal, and civilian evacuation. Dagar charged entry fees and prohibited mapping of active fortifications.

Veyrath wanted to send an observer before recommending the attraction publicly.

Max approved the visit but did not travel himself. The purpose did not justify another three-million-DP resurrection risk when Veyrath’s selected observer possessed the relevant expertise.

Choosing not to go mattered as much as the earlier decision to cross.

Nethren waited until the other expansion requests were resolved.

”Foreign veterans have entered three levels.” he said. ”Their methods differ. The Crowncap Guard is ready for the final controlled test.”

The test would occur inside Nethren’s unfinished cavern, not a public instance. Death remained possible despite every control. The participants needed to understand that the encounter was under development and that leaving the marked exercise boundaries could expose them to untested growth.

The Stone Brace volunteered.

Merrit offered a five-person team composed of workshop guards accustomed to hazards, moving machinery, and constructed traps. He attempted to pay them through the training fund.

Max required each participant to confirm willingness separately.

All ten accepted.

Dagar wanted the Stone Brace to prove that the weakness exposed on Level Three could be corrected. Merrit wanted practical knowledge about fungal materials and a demonstration his guards could survive outside controlled workshops. Nethren wanted tactics the Crowncap Guard had never seen.

Max wanted to know whether the future boss remained fair when confronted by people who did not think like its creator.

The exchange would expand for one purpose at a time.

The same limit applied to the market.

An Undercity merchant asked for permanent access to the receiving room after selling every bundle of treated hide he brought to the first opening. A Thousand Works buyer wanted him to guarantee twice the amount next month.

”I can guarantee what I have.” the merchant said. ”I cannot guarantee what adventurers will bring back.”

The buyer suggested an advance large enough to secure his entire future supply.

Hizon expected the merchant to accept. Instead, the man refused.

”If I take the advance, I owe you before I know my price or my stock.” he said. ”Then your gate closes and I owe someone I cannot reach.”

The decision pleased Hizon and cost him a profitable contract fee. He recorded both reactions.

The Undercity had become prosperous because its merchants learned to use dungeon traffic, repair work, and specialized materials. It was not Sanctuary’s largest economic center, and Hizon did not need it described that way. He wanted its growth to survive contact with a wealthier market.

Max limited advance contracts to goods already held or scheduled production the seller controlled. No one could claim an adventurer’s future discoveries or make the exchange gate security for a debt.
