Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The formal meeting ended before the real disagreement began.

Max invited both delegations to eat in a private room attached to one of Sanctuary’s ordinary inns. The meal was not a diplomatic feast. Everyone selected from the same menu offered to other customers, and Max paid the innkeeper’s normal rate.

Merrit noticed.

”You could have the dungeon provide a dining hall.” he said.

”The inn already provides one.” Max replied.

”You pay for services inside your own territory.”

”People stop building businesses if the Dungeon Master replaces them whenever he wants something.” Hizon said.

Dagar sat where he could see both exits. His captain chose the seat beside him. The quartermaster sat near Anna and continued comparing notes about population movement.

Merrit’s artificer wanted to inspect the kitchen equipment. His contract keeper wanted everyone to stop creating possible negotiations long enough to eat.

The individual choices revealed more than the delegations intended.

Conversation remained practical until Dagar asked Max why Sanctuary existed.

”The dungeon requires an entrance and a route toward its levels.” Max said. ”Sanctuary became the place where visitors arrived, prepared, traded, and lived.”

”A sequence, not a purpose.” Dagar replied.

”What answer are you expecting?”

”What do you believe a dungeon is supposed to accomplish?”

The question silenced the side conversations.

Dagar answered for the Iron Redoubt before Max could.

”A dungeon survives. Everything else follows from whether its core remains secure.”

His certainty did not come from the first challenge alone.

Dagar had awakened near a border territory where fortified towns survived repeated wars. The people who approached his first entrance did not seek entertainment. They wanted shelter, defensible roads, and somewhere to store food beyond an enemy’s reach.

He built walls because every other need disappeared when walls failed.

”The first settlement outside my entrance burned before I could protect it.” Dagar said. ”I built the Redoubt so the next one would not.”

His defensive captain had been a child in that settlement. He owed his life to the soldiers who carried survivors through Dagar’s unfinished gate.

The captain’s suspicion of exposed streets no longer looked like professional stubbornness. Sanctuary resembled the kind of place he had watched burn.

”You built every resident behind the third wall because you promised there would always be another wall.” Max said.

”Yes.” Dagar replied.

”And now moving them requires opening what protects them.”

”Yes.”

Dagar did not want to abandon the promise. He wanted to correct the consequence he had not understood when making it.

Merrit considered survival an incomplete answer.

”A sealed core can survive in an empty dungeon.” he said. ”If survival is the only purpose, remove every visitor, resident, and business. Build stone until nothing remains worth attacking.”

”A dungeon without resources cannot maintain the stone.” Dagar replied.

”Then your purpose includes production whether you respect it or not.”

Merrit believed a dungeon existed to create value that could not exist elsewhere. He had awakened near a city controlled by craft guilds. His family produced tools under contracts that transferred ownership of every design to guild masters who had never entered the workshop.

When Merrit became a Dungeon Master, he built the Thousand Works as a place where crafters could obtain equipment without surrendering their names from what they created.

Hizon raised an eyebrow.

”You claim a share of their work.”

”The dungeon supplies tools they could never afford individually.” Merrit replied. ”The share maintains those tools and funds new ones.”

”Your first contract tried to claim improvements your tools did not create.” Max said.

Merrit did not avoid the contradiction.

”Because I learned the same lesson as the guilds. Designs leave. Copies spread. A workshop that gives everything away becomes a story told by the people who profited from it.”

”So you became less greedy than the people you hated.” Hizon said.

Merrit’s contract keeper closed his eyes briefly.

”I became someone who keeps the Thousand Works alive.” Merrit replied.

The response carried anger because Hizon had reached the fear beneath his agreements. Merrit did not want wealth only for himself. He wanted control strong enough that no larger power could take what his people built. Each broad contract protected against exploitation by making him the first person entitled to exploit the result.

Anna asked the question without accusation.

”Do your crafters have a way to refuse the dungeon’s share?”

”They can use their own tools.”

”Inside your market?”

”Yes.”

”Can they sell there under the same terms?”

Merrit’s answer took longer.

They paid a higher stall fee because the dungeon earned no production share.

”Then they can refuse.” Anna said. ”The cost tells them which answer you prefer, but the choice exists.”

Merrit relaxed slightly. She had examined the rule without declaring him identical to the guild masters he resented.

Dagar turned the original question toward Max.

”What is Sanctuary’s purpose?”

Max could have described income, training levels, attractions, Corathen, or defense. None alone explained what the dungeon had become.

”To remain worth entering.” he said.

Merrit looked unconvinced.

Max continued.

Adventurers entered because the levels offered skills, rewards, and challenges. Merchants entered because visitors created customers. Residents remained because Sanctuary offered safety, work, and connections to places beyond their original homes. Hizon built businesses because the Undercity could prosper within the wider dungeon. Nethren rebuilt because Max’s authority gave his damaged dungeon room to exist without consuming it.

”If the dungeon offers nothing people value, I have to force participation or survive without them.” Max said. ”I do not want either outcome.”

”You define purpose through visitors.” Dagar said.

”Through relationships. Visitors are part of it. So are people who never enter a level.”

Merrit asked whether Max considered Hizon and Nethren partners or possessions.

”They operate beneath my wider dungeon authority.” Max said. ”Hizon governs the Undercity. Nethren is rebuilding his own territory as Hizon’s subordinate. Their independence has limits, but I do not own every decision they make.”

”You could remove them.”

”Yes.”

”Then every freedom exists because you permit it.”

Hizon answered before Max.

”Every workshop in the Thousand Works exists because Merrit permits it.”

Merrit frowned.

”Contracts protect them.”

”Authority still enforces the contracts. The question is what makes authority predictable enough for people to build beneath it.”

Hizon served Max because the arrangement gave him territory, income, and room to govern. Nethren served because submission allowed his damaged dungeon and surviving people to continue. Neither relationship became equal by pretending Max lacked the power to end it.

”I want their success to strengthen the whole dungeon.” Max said. ”If they succeed only when I ignore them, the structure is weak. If I take everything they build, they have no reason to build more.”

Dagar understood the principle through command. Soldiers accepted hierarchy when duty, protection, and advancement moved in both directions. A commander who spent people without preserving what they served eventually commanded only fear.

Merrit understood it through ownership. Creators continued producing when agreements allowed them to benefit from the result.

”Relationships fail during war.”

”Some do. Others defended the dungeon during the first challenge without being creatures I purchased.”

Dagar knew the value of voluntary defenders. His own residents had worked behind the walls during the challenge. He still distrusted making security depend on whether people chose to remain loyal.

”A wall does not reconsider its allegiance.” he said.

”A wall also does not notice smoke entering a residential chamber and open a ventilation shaft.” his quartermaster replied.

Dagar looked at her.

She had not challenged his authority lightly.

”Your people saved the third wall because they lived behind it.” she continued. ”The fortress was not protected by stone alone.”

The captain added his own concern.

”People can also open gates.”

”Then command must know which people hold them.” Dagar said.

His answer shifted without surrendering his principle. The Redoubt still existed to survive, but survival required understanding residents as participants rather than objects stored behind defenses.

Merrit’s artificer entered the discussion.

”If Sanctuary remains worth entering, what prevents someone else from copying everything valuable?”

”They can copy many things.” Max replied. ”They can build races, markets, heists, and training levels. They cannot copy the history connecting ours or the people who operate them.”

”You do not protect your designs?” Merrit asked.

”I protect information that threatens the dungeon. I do not expect no one else to build an airship race because we have the Skyyard.”

Merrit found the position wasteful. Hizon understood it more readily.

The Ant Hill remained valuable because it connected to the Undercity, its repair houses, food stalls, lodging, and Hizon’s reputation. A copied insect instance would not automatically reproduce the district around it.

”You protect the business by making the whole place difficult to replace.” Hizon said.

”Yes.” Max replied.

Merrit began taking notes.

The conversation did not produce a shared definition of a dungeon.

Dagar still placed survival first. Merrit still placed creation and ownership near the center. Max still believed long-term strength came from giving people reasons to participate.

Their differences revealed possible exchanges.

The Redoubt could teach Sanctuary about layered fortifications and disciplined response. The Thousand Works could provide tools and production methods. Sanctuary could show both how independent businesses and residents strengthened a dungeon without becoming property of the core.

None needed to become a lesser copy of another.

When the meal ended, Dagar paid for his delegation despite Max’s invitation. Merrit requested a receipt that separated food, room use, and service.

Hizon asked the innkeeper how much extra work the receipt required.

The contract keeper began another set of notes.
