Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The exercise began with an evacuation problem rather than a battle.

Colored smoke blocked the residential gate. Coordinators divided families among two maintenance passages while engineers monitored airflow. Redoubt soldiers protected the buildings where the passages ended.

Max’s team received a separate assignment.

They would escort him from the residential square to the exchange gate while controlled opponents attempted to delay them. The opponents carried marked weapons and followed restrictions intended to prevent serious injury.

Max’s strength could be used. His dungeon authority could not.

The distinction became obvious at the first barrier.

A weighted frame represented fallen stone across the route. Two members of the elite team prepared to lift it while the others watched the surrounding approaches.

”I can move it.” Max said.

The captain allowed him to try.

Max lifted the frame alone. The weight strained his arms but rose high enough for the team to pass beneath. He expected the action to save time.

Instead, half the team remained behind him.

Holding the frame occupied Max’s hands and placed him in the center of the route. The captain could not move him or close formation. Controlled opponents approaching from the side forced the rear guards to defend while Max remained committed to the weight.

Once everyone crossed, the captain ordered him to drop it.

”I removed the barrier.” Max said while they continued.

”You became the barrier.”

Max had enough power to perform the task and too little experience to understand how his position affected everyone around him.

At the next junction, controlled attackers pressed from two passages. Max saw one opponent overextend and moved to remove him from the exercise. The strike was restrained, but the movement opened the center position his team had built around him.

One guard followed to cover Max. Another had to abandon the rear to fill the gap. By the time the opponent carried Max’s mark and withdrew, the entire formation had turned toward a threat the team could have passed without engaging.

The captain restored their positions behind a barricade.

”Why did you attack?” he asked.

”He was exposed.” Max replied.

”So were you.”

”I could stop him.”

”Our objective is not stopping everyone who can be stopped.”

Max almost argued that removing an attacker protected the route. He looked back instead. The controlled opponent had delayed them for longer by appearing vulnerable than he could have by blocking the passage.

”He offered a target.” Max said.

”And you accepted his objective in place of ours.”

The captain ordered the team forward.

Strength made more actions possible. It did not make each possible action useful.

During the final exercise corridor, Max waited for commands. When a marked attacker emerged above them, he warned the left guard and continued moving. When a weighted door began to close, he held it only after the captain ordered the rear through, then released it and returned to the center before anyone engaged him.

They reached the designated safe point with two guards marked and Max untouched.

”Better.” the captain said.

Max wanted more than one word and recognized that wanting praise was another distraction the exercise did not owe him.

”What still failed?” he asked.

”You watched me for every decision. Training should teach you the formation well enough to act without inventing a different plan.”

The criticism pleased Max more than praise would have. It gave him something specific to learn.

The next delay involved opponents behind cover.

Max could strike hard enough to break the light barricade. Doing so would send debris through the route his own team needed. He waited for the captain to redirect two guards, then helped move the obstacle intact.

The choice took longer and preserved formation.

Dagar observed from the wall platform while commanding the wider exercise. He had expected Max’s elite team to treat their Dungeon Master as someone to keep away from every threat. Instead, they gave him tasks that served the movement and refused help that made their work harder.

”Your guards speak to you like a recruit.” Dagar said through the exercise communication crystal.

”During training, I am less experienced than they are.” Max replied.

”And outside training?”

”They advise. I decide.”

”The difference depends on everyone recognizing when training ends.”

Dagar’s concern was not theoretical. Soldiers who became comfortable ordering a ruler during exercises could carry the habit into real decisions. A ruler who rejected every order to protect status could make training useless.

Max’s captain heard the exchange.

”The exercise ends when the Dungeon Master says it ends, the assigned objective is complete, or a real emergency replaces it.” he said.

Dagar accepted the boundary.

The controlled opponents increased pressure near the second courtyard. Max reacted faster than he had during Veyrath’s assessment. He followed called routes without stopping to inspect every alternative. When a guard pulled him away from a marked strike, he moved rather than resisting.

His mistakes shifted.

He began anticipating instructions and moved before the captain issued them. Twice the guess was correct. The third time, he stepped toward cover the team intended to use as a decoy.

The captain redirected him with a short command.

”You are trying to prove you learned.” she said once they reached the next protected position.

”I am trying not to slow you.”

”Then respond to the plan we are using. Do not invent the next one.”

Max recognized the motivation she had identified. He wanted improvement to be visible. The desire made him perform what he believed a trained person would do instead of listening to the people actually trained.

”Understood.” he said.

The last part of the route passed through the trade courtyard.

Redoubt soldiers held marked positions against a larger controlled force. The exercise did not narrate itself through individual strikes. Lines shifted. Defenders gave ground where pressure concentrated and recovered it through side passages. The Redoubt’s walls turned movement into a resource Dagar controlled.

Max’s team remained outside the main engagement until one defensive position failed.

The captain could choose the longer route or use Max’s strength to reopen the protected passage. She assigned two guards to cover him and ordered the rest ahead.

Max moved a simulated gate mechanism that normally required four soldiers. He stopped as soon as the passage opened far enough. He did not remain to prove he could move it farther.

The team crossed without breaking formation.

”Useful.” the captain said.

The single word mattered more than praise after the first barrier.

They reached the first courtyard while the residential evacuation continued behind them. Max crossed the marked objective line. The controlled opponents stopped.

The entire exercise had taken less time than Dagar’s existing plan allowed. The residential coordinators had moved most families through the two passages, but congestion developed where both routes emerged near the same storage building.

Dagar ended the exercise.

Redoubt soldiers lowered marked weapons. Residents began returning to the square. Engineers opened the main gate to clear the colored smoke.

Max’s captain gave an immediate assessment.

”Your strength can remove obstacles and operate mechanisms faster than an ordinary team. You should not take a fixed position unless the plan depends on you holding it.”

”Because the team loses the ability to move me.” Max said.

”And because you begin treating completion of the physical task as the objective.”

The objective was Max reaching safety, not Max lifting the heaviest object available.

Dagar descended from the platform.

”You obeyed your captain.” he said.

”You sound surprised.”

”Dungeon Masters become accustomed to authority answering them immediately.”

”My core answers me. People provide judgment.”

”People also refuse.”

”Sometimes correctly.”

Dagar looked toward his quartermaster, who was already arguing that the evacuation bottleneck proved they needed routes ending in separate buildings.

He understood the implication and did not enjoy it.

The defensive captain joined them with his own report. The new passages allowed residents to leave the third wall, but defending both routes weakened the second courtyard’s center. He wanted movable barriers that could redirect attackers without sealing evacuees inside.

The exercise had given each side evidence.

No one received complete victory.

Max expected the rest of the day to involve revisions.

The real alarm sounded before the colored smoke cleared.

It did not use the measured rhythm assigned to exercises.

Three rapid strikes rang from beneath the eastern wall, followed by a continuous tone from the lower maintenance passages.

Dagar changed before anyone explained.

His attention left the discussion. Orders moved through the Redoubt. The residential gate closed halfway, leaving room for returning coordinators while preventing a charge. Soldiers who had been resetting exercise equipment abandoned it and moved toward real positions.

Max’s captain placed the elite team around him.

”Exercise ended.” she said.

The boundary Dagar had questioned became immediate.

A runner reached them from the eastern maintenance station.

Creatures had entered through a disused quarry conduit beneath the second courtyard. The conduit had remained sealed for years. Opening the ventilation system for the evacuation exercise changed the pressure inside the connected tunnels and broke a weakened internal barrier.

The alarm was not an invasion through the exchange gate.

It was a flaw inside the Redoubt.

Dagar looked toward Max.

”Your safe conduct remains active. Return to Sanctuary.”

The elite captain agreed.

Max looked past them toward residents still moving between the second and third walls. The breach lay between him and the exchange courtyard. Returning required crossing the area Dagar’s forces were now trying to secure.

”Which route?” Max asked.

Dagar called for a report.

The nearest protected route had already closed.

The second passed beside the breached maintenance station.

The exercise had ended.

The withdrawal had become real.
