Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Hizon arrived at the leaders’ meeting with projected profits.

Veyrath arrived with four ways the exchange gate could become a threat.

Kildra brought a list of information foreign visitors could learn without violating any rule. Nethren brought the Crowncap Guard’s testing schedule. The Orc Chief brought no papers and asked who would be responsible when a visitor crossed into territory that did not belong to Sanctuary’s public city.

Max began with the proposed limits rather than the possible benefits.

The exchange gate would open only at scheduled times. Initial traffic would remain inside an isolated receiving area and designated public routes. No one received automatic access to dungeon levels, the Undercity, Masquerade Castle, the work camp, Nethren’s territory, or Corathen.

Hizon objected immediately.

”Then the Undercity receives none of the trade.”

”The Undercity can send merchants and goods into the approved market.” Max replied. ”Foreign visitors do not enter your district until you decide you want them there.”

”Customers buy more when they see the repair houses.”

”They also learn the routes, traffic patterns, and businesses you may not want copied.” Kildra said.

Hizon looked toward him.

”You want every secret preserved because your castle sells secrets.”

”I want you to understand that a visitor does not need to break a rule to study you.”

Kildra’s concern came from experience. Masquerade Castle depended on observation, misdirection, and discovering what people revealed through ordinary behavior. A merchant measuring delivery time could learn when a road stood empty. A crafter asking about repairs could learn which defenses suffered the most damage.

”Merrit will send people whose work depends on noticing how things are built.” Kildra continued. ”Assume they will notice.”

Hizon did not withdraw his request. He changed it.

”Give the Undercity a separate review after thirty days.” he said. ”If the receiving market operates without incident, I submit specific streets and businesses for foreign access.”

Veyrath considered the request.

”With routes that can be closed independently.”

”And with my guards controlling them.” Hizon said.

”Sanctuary guards control the connection to the gate.” Max replied. ”Your guards control the district once visitors enter it.”

Hizon leaned back. He had built wealth partly by recognizing where another person’s authority ended and his own began. He did not want the Undercity treated as an attraction inside Max’s city, but he also did not want responsibility for a foreign threat before it reached his streets.

”Agreed.” he said. ”Put the boundary on the map.”

The discussion moved to what the visitors would learn about Sanctuary’s leadership.

Merrit and Dagar had both seen Hizon, Nethren, Kildra, and the Orc Chief speak against Max without punishment. A longer exchange would show that their territories operated under different agreements. Foreign Dungeon Masters might interpret every leader as Max’s servant. They might instead assume Max possessed no control over the people using his dungeon.

”Which misunderstanding do you intend to correct?” Kildra asked.

”Both.” Max said.

”Correcting both requires telling them what authority you actually hold.”

Max looked around the table.

He could close Sanctuary, alter its public rules, spend its Dungeon Points, and refuse any connection to another dungeon. He did not own the Undercity’s businesses, Nethren’s creatures, Kildra’s performances, the Orc Chief’s camp, or the decisions of Sanctuary’s residents.

”Then we tell them.” he said. ”A connection to Sanctuary does not give access to every territory allied with it. No agreement I sign transfers someone else’s authority.”

The Orc Chief approved with a single nod.

”The first market should include Undercity merchants selected by me. We learn what Merrit’s people ask before allowing them below.”

Max approved the condition.

Nethren wanted access to foreign veterans after the commercial trial.

”The Crowncap Guard has learned from our methods.” he said. ”Testers from another dungeon will make different choices.”

”They will not enter until the resurrection rules are clearer.” Max replied.

”They can test without dying.”

”You cannot guarantee the encounter will never kill them.”

Nethren’s fungal network could stop the guardian when it recognized surrender or incapacitation. A mistake, unfamiliar signal, or rapid injury could still cause death.

”Then their Dungeon Master must accept the risk.” Nethren said.

”The adventurers must accept it.” Anna corrected. ”Their Dungeon Master does not own the decision.”

Nethren had converted some of his own people into eternal souls without consent. He did not argue as if authority settled the matter. He recorded the correction and asked when individual volunteers could receive the rules.

”After the public gate proves stable.” Max said.

The Orc Chief returned to his question.

”Who commands visitors outside Sanctuary?”

Sanctuary’s rules prevented violence in the public city. The Undercity enforced its own local procedures under Hizon. The work camp, Masquerade Castle, and Nethren’s territory each held different risks and authorities.

”The leader responsible for the territory.” Max said. ”Visitors receive those rules before entering. No one crosses from the public route by assuming the exchange agreement grants access.”

”And if they refuse an order?”

”They return to Sanctuary or lose access.”

The Orc Chief accepted the answer. He did not want foreign Dungeon Masters claiming that their status placed them beyond local authority.

Veyrath presented his threat assessment.

The gate could bypass outer observation, introduce an unknown object, allow someone to study Sanctuary’s response times, or remain open during a simultaneous emergency on the other side.

He proposed two barriers, independent closure controls, and a rule that the gate never opened while Sanctuary was in defense mode.

”The system may disable temporary access automatically in defense mode.” Quin said.

”May?” Veyrath asked.

”The explanation does not state it.”

”Then we plan as if it remains open.”

Max agreed. The first closure control belonged to the gate system. The second would physically isolate the receiving area from Sanctuary if the gate failed to sever.

Hizon asked what happened to merchants trapped on the wrong side of both barriers.

”They wait until the threat ends.” Veyrath said.

”With what supplies?”

The receiving area needed water, sanitation, and enough food for a reasonable delay. Veyrath had treated it as a security chamber. Hizon forced him to consider it as a place containing people.

They added emergency stores without weakening the barriers.

Kildra wanted every visitor identified before entry.

”Registration in Sanctuary is optional.” Anna said.

”Ordinary visitors enter through a known caravan route. These people cross directly from another dungeon.”

Optional registration did not mean anonymous access to every restricted program. Max could require identification as a condition of using the exchange gate without changing Sanctuary’s general rule.

The first traders would register for the exchange itself. The core would still track every entrant regardless.

No leader opposed the limited trial after the conditions were complete.

They disagreed about what success should mean.

Hizon wanted repeated profitable trades and new customers.

Veyrath wanted the gate opened, used, and closed without exposing a route toward the core.

Kildra wanted no foreign visitor leaving with information Sanctuary did not realize it had revealed.

Nethren wanted access to testers whose habits differed from local adventurers.

The Orc Chief wanted every territory’s authority understood before visitors entered it.

Anna wanted the trial to remain voluntary for the people taking the risk.

Quin wanted unanswered mechanics recorded as unanswered rather than converted into convenient rules.

Max combined the standards.

The first phase succeeded if scheduled traffic crossed safely, both sides could close the gate independently, no participant acquired access beyond the agreement, and the people involved still considered the exchange useful after learning its costs.

Profit alone would not justify it. Perfect security with no reason to open the gate would not justify it either.

One requirement remained.

Someone from Sanctuary needed to inspect the receiving territory on the other side before Max allowed ordinary merchants to cross.

Veyrath offered to send soldiers.

Max refused.

”Dagar came here himself.” he said. ”Merrit came here himself. I will not ask merchants to trust a place I refused to enter.”

Anna had expected the decision. She opened the current resurrection estimate.

The Iron Redoubt existed far enough from Sanctuary that restoring Max after death would cost more than three million Dungeon Points. The figure could rise if the connection shifted or if Max’s strength increased before the trip.

No other person in the room treated the amount casually.

Three million Dungeon Points represented levels, creatures, defenses, attractions, and reserves. Resurrection would save Max by taking choices away from the dungeon for months or longer.

”Dagar can show the courtyard through the gate.” Hizon said.

”He can show whatever he places in front of it.” Kildra replied.

”Then send someone whose resurrection is cheaper.”

Hizon’s suggestion was practical. Max rejected it for the same reason he rejected Merrit’s controlled-death proposal. Lower cost did not make another person’s life a convenient test.

”My elite team comes with me.” Max said. ”The visit remains in Dagar’s public territory. The gate stays open. Anna and Quin retain authority here. If conditions change, we return immediately.”

Veyrath wanted to accompany him. Max refused that as well.

”If the gate closes, Sanctuary needs its defensive commander.”

Veyrath disliked the division and accepted the logic.

Anna waited until the others left before speaking privately.

”You said you would not cross without a reason worth the risk.”

”I believe this is one.” Max replied.

”Why?”

”Because every future exchange depends on whether I expect other people to accept dangers I avoid because my life costs more.”

”Your life does cost more.”

”To the dungeon. Not to the people I would send in my place.”

Anna did not ask him to pretend the values were equal. She asked whether he had considered what three million Dungeon Points meant if the Redoubt’s safe conduct failed.

Max had.

”The gate remains open, my team controls the immediate route, and Dagar’s reason for inviting us depends on proving he can cooperate. If any of those conditions change, I leave.”

”And you will follow your team’s withdrawal signal.”

The combat assessment made the condition unavoidable.

”Yes.”

Anna approved the journey without liking the risk.

They settled authority during his absence before anyone discussed the route.

Anna could suspend either exchange gate, spend emergency Dungeon Points under the existing limits, and issue orders to Sanctuary’s staff. Veyrath controlled defense. Quin controlled records and could refuse any document that attempted to treat Max’s absence as approval.

”If Dagar asks for a change while you are standing beside him?” Quin asked.

”He waits until I return.” Max said.

”Even if you agree with it there?”

”Especially then. I do not want a decision made inside his fortress to arrive here as something everyone else is expected to accept.”

Anna’s concern eased. The journey still risked Max’s life and a ruinous resurrection cost, but it would not place Sanctuary’s authority on the other side of the gate with him.

Max sent Dagar the inspection request.

The response arrived soon after.

[The Redoubt accepts. Your guards may carry weapons inside the public courtyard. Safe conduct remains active. I will meet you at the gate.]
