Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Max checked the resurrection estimate one final time.

[ESTIMATED RESTORATION COST OUTSIDE DUNGEON TERRITORY]

[3,184,000 DP]

[Estimate varies according to distance, active conditions, and strength at time of death.]

The number had increased slightly since the leaders’ meeting.

Max did not ask the core to explain the change. Minor movement in the connection or his own condition could account for it. The estimate mattered because of its scale, not because every digit remained fixed.

Anna stood beside him in the receiving room.

His elite combat team waited in full equipment. Each member carried supplies for one day and enough emergency material to survive longer if the gate closed. Their captain had reviewed Dagar’s safe-conduct rules and the Redoubt’s public map.

No one treated the trip like a ceremonial visit.

”Quin and I can close our side of the gate.” Anna said. ”Veyrath controls the physical barriers. If we lose communication, we keep it open unless the Redoubt becomes an active threat.”

Closing too quickly could strand Max. Leaving it open during an attack could expose Sanctuary. The contingency required judgment rather than one automatic response.

”If the Redoubt’s gate closes first, seal the room.” Max said. ”Do not reopen for anyone claiming to be us until the core confirms identity.”

”Already in the procedure.”

Anna did not need the instruction. Max gave it because leaving his dungeon made familiar safeguards feel less certain.

She noticed.

”You can still decide not to go.”

”I know.”

”Knowing is not the same as feeling permitted.”

Max looked at the waiting team. They had spent the morning checking buckles, route markers, emergency food, and the small objects that became important only after a plan failed. None urged him forward. Their seriousness made refusal easier, not harder.

”I am going because I need to see what Dagar protects before I decide how much access to give him.” he said. ”I am not going to prove I am brave.”

”Good.” Anna replied. ”Bravery is expensive at that distance.”

The captain assigned Max the center position and gave him a private signal that meant immediate withdrawal. Max was not to debate it, ask for an explanation, or remain behind to protect anyone outside the team.

”Dagar’s people may need help.” Max said.

”Then Dagar commands that help.” the captain replied. ”My duty is returning you through the gate.”

The answer sounded cold only until Max considered the alternative. A guard who divided loyalty during an emergency could fail everyone.

”I know.”

”I am reminding you because everyone spent the morning preparing as if the decision were irreversible.”

Max looked toward the blank wall where the gate would appear.

”Do you want me to stay?”

”I want the exchange inspected by someone we trust. I want you to understand the risk. Both can be true.”

Their relationship did not require Anna to approve every danger enthusiastically. It required Max to hear the cost she saw without treating concern as an attempt to control him.

”I will come back if the conditions change.” he said.

”Even if leaving feels insulting.”

”Even then.”

Anna kissed him before moving behind the marked observation line.

Max confirmed the connection.

The wall opened onto the Iron Redoubt.

Dagar waited in the first courtyard with his defensive captain, civilian quartermaster, and twelve soldiers. The soldiers stood along the walls rather than blocking the gate. Their weapons remained sheathed.

Stone surrounded the courtyard on every side. The walls rose high enough to conceal the structures beyond them. Two elevated platforms overlooked the open ground. A heavy gate led deeper into the fortress. A smaller door opened toward what Dagar’s map identified as the exterior trade road.

Max’s core awareness ended at the threshold.

The loss was not total. He still sensed the connection behind him and the distant existence of his core. He could request information through the gate while it remained open. The courtyard itself belonged to another authority.

Sanctuary had always surrounded him with knowledge he no longer noticed using. Inside the Redoubt, stone was only stone until someone explained who built it, what lay beyond it, or whether the passage behind it remained open.

The elite captain crossed first.

He inspected the immediate ground, sightlines, and Redoubt soldiers. He then signaled Max forward.

Max crossed.

The resurrection estimate became active.

No warning announced immediate danger. The expense existed quietly in the same way a cliff existed beneath a secure bridge.

Dagar approached without offering a weapon search.

”Your team remains armed under safe conduct.” he said. ”Drawing against anyone outside an authorized exercise ends the visit.”

”The same applies to your soldiers.” Max replied.

”Yes.”

Dagar’s captain looked toward the Sanctuary gate.

”Your side remains visible.”

”It remains open throughout the inspection.”

”Then you have not trusted the Redoubt with your return.”

Max’s captain answered before Max did.

”Safe conduct reduces risk. It does not replace an exit.”

Dagar appeared satisfied. He would have distrusted a visitor who abandoned every precaution to prove friendliness.

The first inspection concerned the gate itself.

The system connection occupied the center of a marked receiving zone. Redoubt soldiers could close the deeper gate and exterior door, isolating the courtyard. Mechanical shutters above could block the elevated platforms if attackers seized them. Drainage channels contained barriers preventing small creatures from entering through them.

Max’s team found no hidden soldiers or active trap aimed directly at the connection.

They did find six narrow openings in the walls.

”Firing positions.” the elite captain said.

”Sealed during safe conduct.” Dagar replied.

The captain asked to see the seals.

Dagar ordered one opened from the opposite side. A heavy internal plate moved aside, revealing a passage wide enough for a crossbow or spell focus. The mechanism closed again.

”You could open all six after the gate forms.” Max said.

”Yes.”

”Why show us?”

”Because you would eventually discover them, and I want you to understand that safe conduct depends on my order rather than the absence of defenses.”

Dagar did not offer vulnerability as proof of trust. He offered control exercised visibly.

Max understood why the Redoubt followed him.

They continued through the deeper gate.

The second courtyard served as the trade hall. Storehouses lined the walls. Merchants could unload beneath covered platforms while soldiers inspected goods in separated bays. Every cart route passed through two turns before reaching the inner gate.

The Redoubt had no prohibition against violence. Its safety depended on watching people, limiting movement, and possessing overwhelming force at each boundary.

Max felt the difference in every conversation. Sanctuary’s merchants could argue without calculating whether an insult might lead to a drawn weapon. Redoubt merchants kept their voices controlled when soldiers passed.

”Do people fight often?” Max asked.

”Rarely.” Dagar replied.

”Because they choose not to or because they fear the response?”

”Both are useful.”

The quartermaster disagreed.

”Fear settles a dispute until the stronger person finds a place without guards.”

Dagar looked at her.

”You want another rule.”

”I want a way to settle grievances before they become security problems.”

The Redoubt had military hearings for crimes and contract keepers for formal trade disputes. It lacked Sanctuary’s network of ordinary staff capable of resolving smaller conflicts before leaders became involved.

”Our people bring too much to the wall commanders.” she said. ”The commanders punish disruption. They do not always resolve its cause.”

Dagar did not promise a new system. He asked Max how Sanctuary prevented repeated decisions from reaching him.

Max explained the tiered response structure without revealing private access. Routine matters stayed with people authorized to decide them. Appeals followed defined paths. Only the most important matters reached Max.

”I thought your openness meant everyone could ask you directly.” Dagar said.

”They can submit a request. The system does not guarantee I receive it.”

Dagar considered the difference. Approachability did not require Max to become the first decision-maker for every problem.

The tour reached the third wall by midday.

The residential gate was narrower than the trade approach and protected by barriers designed to stop a charge. People passed through in controlled groups. Workers returning from outer duties waited while guards compared marks on their entry tablets.

The Redoubt’s residents lived behind the wall Dagar had promised would hold.

Max saw homes, workshops, storage towers, and a central well. The space was safer than Sanctuary’s open streets and more crowded. Every new building competed with defensive lanes and reserve storage.

Dagar watched Max examine it.

”You see confinement.” he said.

”I see the promise you made.” Max replied. ”I also see why your quartermaster wants routes that do not depend on one gate.”

Dagar looked toward the wall.

Opening additional exits created weaknesses. Refusing them preserved the danger exposed during the challenge.

”The exercise this afternoon will test the ventilation routes.” he said.

Max had agreed to observe, not participate.

Veyrath’s assessment had changed the plan. Dagar wanted to see how Max’s team moved during a fortress withdrawal, and Max wanted experience following their directions outside his own territory.

The exercise would use marked weapons and controlled opponents. No lethal attacks were permitted.

Max’s captain reviewed the conditions.

”If the exercise changes, we return to the gate.” he said.

Dagar accepted.

Max looked back through three walls toward the distant connection he could no longer see.

Sanctuary remained reachable.

For the first time since becoming a Dungeon Master, reaching it depended on someone else’s gates opening as promised.

The loss of his usual awareness became clearer as they crossed the first courtyard. Inside Sanctuary, Max could feel demands accumulating at the edge of his attention. He knew when a system required a decision even before he read it. In the Redoubt, stone was only stone. Closed doors revealed nothing unless someone opened them.

”You keep looking at the walls.” Dagar said.

”I am accustomed to knowing what is behind mine.”

”Then you understand why I built three.”

”No. I understand why you want three. Building them was still a choice.”

Dagar studied him, then gestured toward the residential gate.

”Come see what the choice purchased.”

Max followed with his team around him. The gate to Sanctuary remained open behind three defended courtyards, but its presence no longer felt like control.
