Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The Dungeon Master of the Iron Redoubt identified himself as Dagar.

He did not provide a family name, race, or country. He offered a map showing the public portion of his dungeon instead.

The map contained three fortified courtyards, a trade hall, an arrival chamber, and a road leading toward deeper defenses. Thick walls divided each space. Every route could be closed from two positions.

No homes appeared.

Max asked where the dungeon’s residents lived.

[Beyond the third wall. Visitors do not require the location.]

The answer protected useful information without pretending residents did not exist.

Merrit of the Thousand Works sent a different introduction. His message included drawings of adjustable training mechanisms, repair tools, and modular traps designed to be rebuilt instead of replaced. His public territory contained workshops, testing halls, and a market where crafters competed for dungeon contracts.

His defensive map consisted of one gate and a note stating that restricted territory began beyond it.

”Dagar tells us almost nothing but shows defensive structure.” Anna said. ”Merrit tells us how half his businesses work and shows one door.”

”They are displaying what they believe gives them leverage.” Quin replied.

Dagar wanted Max to respect the Redoubt’s ability to control movement. Merrit wanted Max to see valuable things worth trading for. Neither message revealed whether the person behind it could cooperate.

Max answered over the next several days rather than turning first contact into a single meeting.

The pace frustrated Merrit.

He sent follow-up questions before Max answered the first set and marked several as time-sensitive. None involved an actual deadline. Merrit believed opportunities became less valuable when left unclaimed, and he used urgency to prevent other people from controlling the pace.

Max answered in the original order.

[Calling a question urgent does not create an emergency.] he wrote.

[Delay has a cost even when no one is bleeding.] Merrit replied.

[Then state the cost.]

Merrit did. One tool demonstration required a master artificer who would leave the Thousand Works on another contract in twelve days. A proposed material price remained valid for six. The remaining questions had no external deadline.

Max expedited the two real limits and left the others in order.

Merrit complained less after learning that specific consequences changed priority while impatience did not.

Dagar created the opposite problem. He waited so long between messages that each answer risked becoming detached from the question.

When Max asked why, Dagar explained that every statement about the Redoubt required review for defensive exposure.

[You can answer that information is restricted.] Max wrote.

[A refusal reveals that the information matters.] Dagar replied.

[Silence reveals the same thing and makes cooperation impossible.]

Dagar began separating what he could answer, what he could describe generally, and what he refused. His caution remained. It stopped controlling every exchange.

He asked Dagar how the Redoubt handled civilians during the first challenge.

Dagar’s response arrived after a long delay.

[They remained behind the third wall.]

Max sent another question.

[Were they able to leave if the third wall failed?]

[No.]

The word carried no defense or excuse.

Dagar’s invaders had breached the second wall late in the challenge. The third held, but smoke from burning outer structures entered the residential spaces. The Redoubt’s residents survived because defenders opened ventilation shafts toward unsecured ground and held them long enough for the smoke to clear.

The shafts had not been designed as exits. They were too narrow for an orderly evacuation.

[You asked how a populated dungeon remains useful without becoming weak.] Max wrote. [Why did you build the population behind your strongest wall?]

Dagar answered more quickly.

[Because I believed everything valuable belonged behind it.]

The Redoubt had begun as a fortress. Dagar attracted smiths, suppliers, and soldiers by promising safety. He placed them where enemies were least likely to reach them. As the settlement grew, the wall became both protection and confinement.

Dagar did not want Max to tell him walls were unnecessary. He wanted a way to preserve the principle that made his dungeon successful without allowing it to kill the people he protected.

Max respected the problem.

He sent a general description of Sanctuary’s emergency planning: local leaders designed their own movement routes, Veyrath defined minimum standards, and populated territories required alternatives when normal exits became dangerous. He did not send maps or defense positions.

Dagar noticed the omission.

[You describe authority, not routes.]

[Your routes would not fit Sanctuary.] Max replied. [Mine would not fit the Redoubt. The useful part is who plans them and what they must accomplish.]

Dagar requested an in-person discussion with Veyrath.

Max did not agree immediately.

Merrit’s messages required different caution.

The Thousand Works earned most of its Dungeon Points by charging visitors to use specialized workshops and test equipment against controlled hazards. Crafters brought their own materials. The dungeon supplied tools, space, and constructed targets.

Its customers rarely died.

”He said he wants customers who survive long enough to return.” Anna said.

”He meant it literally.” Max replied.

Death was bad for Merrit’s business because resurrection returned visitors outside the Thousand Works. Some never traveled back. Others blamed the dungeon for damaged materials or unfinished commissions.

Merrit wanted access to a stable visitor population and repair market. Sanctuary offered both.

In return, he proposed licensing several workshop designs and sending trained craftspeople to demonstrate them.

Quin examined the licensing agreement.

”He retains ownership of every improvement made with his tools.”

”Even improvements made by our workers?” Max asked.

”The language includes techniques developed during use, whether or not the equipment caused the discovery.”

Max rejected the condition.

Merrit replied with a revised agreement limiting ownership to the physical designs he supplied. Improvements created independently would belong to their creators. Joint improvements required a separate agreement.

[You expected me to reject the first version.] Max wrote.

[I expected you to read it.] Merrit replied.

[Why begin with terms you knew were too broad?]

[Because some Dungeon Masters accept them, and I am responsible for the Thousand Works. Generosity paid from other people’s labor is not generosity.]

The answer irritated Max without surprising him.

[Cooperation built on a term you hope the other person misses is not cooperation.]

Merrit did not apologize.

[Then your people will require terms I cannot benefit from by hiding. I can work with that.]

Anna read the exchange.

”Do you want to invite someone who admits he tests contracts for weakness?”

”Hizon tests every agreement for advantage.” Max said.

”Hizon also expects you to know he is doing it.”

”Merrit expects the same now.” Quin said. ”The first agreement tells us his default behavior. The revision tells us he can accept a boundary when enforcement is credible.”

”You make him sound manageable, not trustworthy.” Anna said.

”Manageable is enough for a first meeting.”

Max agreed. Trust was not a requirement for allowing someone to sit in a protected room under Sanctuary’s rules. Clear limits mattered more.

They returned to the exchange-gate questions.

Dagar proposed his first courtyard as the Redoubt’s receiving territory. Visitors would arrive within sight of guards and behind a gate leading toward the exterior. Weapons were permitted there because his dungeon did not possess Sanctuary’s general prohibition against violence.

He promised safe conduct during agreed meetings.

Max required more than a promise.

[Visitors must receive the courtyard rules before accepting entry. Your guards may carry weapons. They may not threaten, detain, or search our delegation without a stated cause. Either side closes the gate if safe conduct ends.]

Dagar accepted after adding his own condition. No visitor could inspect fortifications beyond the public courtyard without permission.

Merrit proposed a workshop gallery. Weapons were allowed as tools, but violence triggered constructed restraints and removal from the territory. His dungeon could not make attacks impossible as Sanctuary did.

Max required the restraint system to be demonstrated before any ordinary visitor used the connection.

Merrit accepted and asked Sanctuary to demonstrate its own safety rules.

”He does not believe them.” Anna said.

”He should not accept the claim without evidence.” Quin replied.

Max invited both Dungeon Masters to Sanctuary for a preliminary meeting.

The temporary gate would open into a prepared chamber connected to the public city but separated from the portal plaza. Visitors would receive Sanctuary’s rules before crossing. Veyrath could close the chamber from the city side. Max could sever the gate through the core.

The invitation permitted each Dungeon Master to bring two companions. No creatures, bound constructs, unidentified magical objects, or active portals could cross without separate approval.

Dagar accepted first.

[I will bring my defensive captain and civilian quartermaster. The captain will look for danger. The quartermaster will look for everything the captain ignores.]

His choice revealed more than another map would have.

Merrit accepted an hour later.

[I will bring a contract keeper and a master artificer. The contract keeper will prevent me from agreeing to something expensive. The artificer will attempt to make everything expensive.]

Anna looked at Max.

”He thinks he is amusing.”

”He may be warning us.” Max replied.

Quin entered both delegations into the preparation record. He listed the motivations they had shown rather than assigning personalities they had not confirmed.

Dagar wanted to protect a population without weakening the fortress that made protection possible. He feared exposure more than isolation.

Merrit wanted markets, techniques, and agreements that rewarded his dungeon’s crafters. He feared giving away value more than appearing greedy.

Max wanted knowledge and possible allies without granting access to Sanctuary’s core, resurrection system, or private defenses. He feared building dependence before he understood the relationship.

Anna wanted contact tested while every participant could still withdraw safely.

Quin wanted every assumption recorded before it could become an invisible rule.
