Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The Crowncap Guard waited in a chamber too small for the creature it was becoming.

Its central body stood taller than Nethren. Dark fungal plates layered its chest and shoulders, while a crown of pale caps spread above a head that possessed no visible eyes. Amber light moved through the seams between the plates whenever the surrounding network carried information toward it.

The creature had been purchased new rather than converted from one of Nethren’s surviving followers. Eternal-soul protection bound it to Nethren’s dungeon and ensured that destruction would not become permanent loss.

Protection did not make it experienced.

Max entered the temporary chamber with Hizon and stopped outside the range marked on the floor. Nethren stood beside a cluster of cords connected to the creature’s feet.

”Show him the difference between a signal and a command.” Hizon said.

Nethren pressed one hand against the network.

Three lesser fungal guards moved toward separate passages. The Crowncap Guard did not follow immediately. Amber light crossed its chest as it interpreted their movement. It selected the passage holding the weakest guard and positioned itself behind the creature without blocking either of the other routes.

Nethren sent a direct command.

The Crowncap Guard withdrew at once and returned to the center.

”It can obey without understanding.” Nethren said. ”I need it to understand without requiring every movement from me.”

Max inspected the creature’s record. Its strength already exceeded most ordinary defenders Nethren could afford. Spore production, network awareness, and physical resilience would grow as it developed. None of those abilities made it a boss on their own.

”What has it learned?” Max asked.

”Which lesser guards need support. How far its spores spread in still air. Which signals mean an intruder is withdrawing instead of approaching.”

Hizon opened the training record.

The Crowncap Guard had failed its first exercises. It blocked the only passage while attempting to protect a cluster behind it. In another test, it spread spores through every available route and left no fair approach for an adventurer.

Nethren had corrected both behaviors before allowing the creature near an active instance.

”A defender that removes every valid route invalidates the encounter.” Hizon said.

”The cavern will always provide three approaches.” Nethren replied.

He led them beyond the temporary chamber.

The first permanent cavern existed as a hollowed shell. Rough walls enclosed a space large enough for a small fungal forest, but only one limited growth bed occupied the floor. Moisture entered through a stone channel and spread into shallow trenches marked for later expansion.

Nethren had chosen the cavern shell and basic growth instead of spending everything on a finished environment. Most of the territory remained bare stone.

Three passages connected the entrance side to the future center. The western route crossed the moisture channel. The middle route offered the shortest approach but the least cover. The eastern route climbed along a wall where adventurers could remain above most ground spores.

The Crowncap Guard would alter the safest choice without sealing all three.

Nethren placed projected fungal growths across the cavern. Pale caps marked healing clusters available to his creatures. Dark patches showed spore beds. Thicker cords identified routes through which the Crowncap Guard could receive information.

”How quickly can it change positions?” Max asked.

Nethren demonstrated with the projection. The creature could move between the center and any one passage before an ordinary party crossed half the cavern. Reaching a second passage required time. Supporting one route would weaken another.

”Then the party’s decision matters.” Max said.

”If they force it west, the eastern route becomes easier. If they split without understanding the network, it can punish the smaller group.”

The design rewarded observation and coordination. It did not require parties to guess which passage Nethren preferred.

Max walked the western route. The moisture channel would slow armored adventurers but provide clean water that could reduce the effect of certain spores. The middle route exposed parties to direct pressure from the Crowncap Guard. The eastern ledge avoided much of the network but left little room to maneuver around lesser defenders.

Each route contained advantages as well as danger.

They reached the planned center.

Nethren had not built a throne, altar, or sealed boss arena. The Crowncap Guard’s future position stood among several connected growths. Adventurers could attack the network, lure the defender away, or push directly toward it. The cavern would respond, but it would not close behind them unless an objective clearly announced the restriction.

”What ends the encounter?” Max asked.

Nethren displayed three proposed conditions. Defeating the Crowncap Guard would produce the largest reward. Destroying designated network anchors would force it to withdraw and count as a lesser completion. Reaching and holding the central marker long enough to claim a fungal sample would allow parties built for movement rather than direct combat to succeed.

Hizon rejected the first version of the anchor condition because the anchors could grow behind active defenders.

”The objectives must exist when the party enters.” Hizon said. ”You can protect them. You cannot move the requirements after seeing the party’s plan.”

Nethren fixed each anchor to a visible junction.

Max watched the adjustment without interfering. Hizon’s oversight worked because he applied rules that kept the instance valid, not because he selected Nethren’s preferred tactics.

The Crowncap Guard entered the unfinished cavern.

Without the dense network planned for the future, its awareness shrank. Amber light moved slowly through its plates. It approached the limited growth bed, tested the cords, and positioned itself where it could reach the middle or western passage.

Nethren sent three lesser guards through the cavern. One crossed the eastern ledge. The Crowncap Guard detected it late and changed direction after the creature had nearly reached the center.

”The empty stone teaches it where the network is weak.” Nethren said.

Building the entire fungal environment first would have concealed those weaknesses. Allowing the Crowncap Guard to train during construction gave it time to learn how each addition changed the territory.

Nethren called two of his older eternal souls into the cavern for a controlled exercise. They had once been living members of his people. Their new bodies carried the same fungal marks as the network, but each retained enough independence to choose a route without Nethren directing every step.

One carried a blunt spear and approached through the middle. The other climbed the eastern ledge with a weighted sack representing the sample objective.

The Crowncap Guard advanced toward the spear wielder. The movement looked correct until the climber crossed a thin network cord. Amber light flared through the creature’s crown. It abandoned the nearest threat, turned toward the ledge, and exposed its side to the spear.

The spear struck a fungal plate. The Crowncap Guard continued toward the sack.

Nethren ended the exercise before either soul suffered serious damage.

”It values the objective more than its own condition.” Max said.

”I taught it to prevent removal of the sample.” Nethren replied.

”You taught it too well.” Hizon said.

A party capable of sending one member toward the objective could control the guardian while the others attacked. The weakness was fair if the Crowncap Guard sometimes recognized the diversion. It was mechanical if the same action always overrode every other threat.

Nethren adjusted the signal priority. He did not remove the reaction. The creature would now weigh damage to itself, distance to the sample, and support available from lesser guards before changing targets.

They repeated the exercise.

The Crowncap Guard turned toward the climber but stopped after two steps. Its crown brightened as it registered the spear wielder’s position. It released a short cloud that forced the closer opponent back, then moved toward the ledge while keeping its plated side toward the middle.

The response was slower and less absolute. The eternal soul on the ledge reached the center marker before the Crowncap Guard intercepted him. He held the sack for three counts and lost it on the fourth.

”Would three counts complete the objective?” Max asked.

”Five under the current plan.” Nethren replied.

”Then the party would have learned it was possible.”

The two eternal souls reset without complaint. Nethren asked them what the encounter had felt like rather than relying only on the network record. The spear wielder described the guardian as too willing to expose itself. The climber wanted more warning before the spore burst reached the ledge.

Nethren recorded both observations.

Max moved closer to the marked boundary. The creature turned toward him before any lesser guard reacted.

Its spores remained contained, but the system showed how the response would scale. A mature Crowncap Guard could reinforce nearby fungal creatures, obscure movement, and target anyone damaging the network. If Nethren placed it inside a fully grown cavern without fair routes, the encounter would become oppressive quickly.

Under the current plan, its strength created pressure while its commitments created openings.

”It can become a real boss.” Max said.

Nethren waited for the rest.

”Not yet. Eternal soul status keeps it from being lost. It does not replace training, territory, or an encounter worth returning to.”

”I purchased it early for the same reason.” Nethren replied.

Max approved the cavern’s first construction stage. The approval did not supply Dungeon Points or complete the growth. It confirmed that Nethren could connect the shell and limited fungal bed to his territory without threatening neighboring spaces.

Hizon recorded the three-route requirement and the fixed objectives. Future changes would be checked against both.

Nethren opened the moisture channel.

Water spread into the first trenches. The limited growth bed brightened, and new cords extended across the stone. The Crowncap Guard followed the change, stepping away from the center to test how quickly the western route entered its awareness.

Max watched the creature learn.
