Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The Crowncap Guard passed its revised trial two weeks later.

Nethren prevented fungal growth from sealing any of the three routes. The guardian learned to disable active equipment without striking an incapacitated person beside it. The Stone Brace completed the sample objective. Merrit’s workshop guards destroyed the fixed anchors on a separate attempt.

Neither group defeated the Crowncap Guard directly.

Max approved a limited public opening after Nethren added the declared tool restrictions to the entrance rules. Hizon retained authority to suspend the instance if later growth removed every fair route.

Nethren received the approval without pretending the cavern was finished. Income from the public trials would fund additional growth and the eventual independent level.

The exchange had produced its first improvement that none of the three dungeons could have created alone.

Max used the result to open the concord meeting.

Dagar and Merrit returned to Sanctuary with the same companions who attended the first visit. Hizon, Veyrath, Anna, and Quin joined Max. The event-support gnomes prepared the room, confirmed materials, and left before the discussion began.

No one called the agreement an alliance yet.

Quin had proposed the word concord because it described agreement without promising affection, shared command, or permanent unity.

Dagar considered the word too weak.

”A hostile force will not care what we call ourselves.” he said.

”A hostile force is not the only danger created by this agreement.” Quin replied. ”So is assuming we have promised more than we have.”

Merrit supported the name because merchants already understood agreements that remained valuable only while everyone honored their terms. Max supported it because Sanctuary did not need another title implying ownership.

Dagar accepted it after the document defined exactly what the concord required during an emergency. The name could remain modest if the obligations were not.

Dagar wanted mutual defense obligations.

Merrit wanted stable trade and protection for intellectual ownership.

Max wanted rules for cooperation that did not allow either dungeon to turn Sanctuary into a permanent corridor, guaranteed market, or source of resurrection.

Their contract keepers had combined the previous agreements into one document. Quin had added every unresolved issue as a separate section instead of allowing silence to imply consent.

The first principle recognized independent authority.

Each Dungeon Master controlled access, rules, and decisions inside his own territory. Participation in the concord did not transfer ownership of creatures, residents, designs, land, or core functions.

Dagar approved.

Merrit added protection for voluntary contracts made by individuals within each territory.

”A Dungeon Master should not cancel a valid agreement merely because he dislikes the result.” Merrit said.

”A contract cannot override local law or dungeon safety.” Max replied.

”Then local authority can always invent a safety objection.”

”And a contract can describe exploitation as consent.” Anna said.

Merrit’s contract keeper proposed the final language. Agreements remained enforceable according to the rules disclosed when they were signed. A Dungeon Master could suspend performance during a genuine emergency but owed review and appropriate restitution afterward. No contract could require access the local Dungeon Master had never possessed authority to grant.

Merrit accepted because the language protected ownership without making contracts stronger than the dungeon containing them.

The second principle governed gates.

Every connection required active consent from both Dungeon Masters. Either could close it immediately. Ordinary closures should receive reasonable notice when circumstances allowed. Emergency closure created no penalty merely because it interrupted trade.

Dagar wanted authority to refuse any person or shipment without explanation.

Hizon objected.

”You can refuse. Merchants should know whether the refusal concerns them, their goods, or a closed schedule. Otherwise no one can correct the problem.”

”Explaining a refusal can reveal defensive information.” Dagar replied.

”Then identify the category without revealing the detail.”

They established broad notices: access suspended, undeclared item, person not approved, local emergency, or agreement violation. Dagar retained the right to reveal nothing more. Merchants gained enough information to decide whether trying again was worthwhile.

The third principle governed visitors.

Anyone crossing accepted the host dungeon’s disclosed rules. The home Dungeon Master retained no command authority over ordinary personal decisions inside the host territory. Employment, military service, and existing obligations did not disappear, but they could not be enforced through violence or access Max had not granted.

Dagar challenged the wording.

”A Redoubt soldier remains under orders.”

”Inside the Redoubt.” Max said.

”Everywhere.”

”Then you could order the Stone Brace to enter a level after one of them refused.”

Dagar looked toward his captain.

Military discipline depended on orders following soldiers beyond one courtyard. The exchange depended on people retaining the ability to accept a foreign dungeon’s risks individually.

The Stone Brace had volunteered. Dagar had benefited from allowing the distinction.

”I may order a soldier to return to the Redoubt.” he said. ”I may not order him to enter a Sanctuary level.”

Max accepted the boundary.

Merrit agreed that he could fund training and set conditions on his own grants but could not purchase another person’s choice from Sanctuary.

The fourth principle addressed information.

Public observation remained permitted. No participant could demand core records, private maps, defensive positions, resurrection mechanisms, or protected personal information. Deliberate attempts to acquire restricted information justified removal and closure.

Kildra had contributed one sentence despite not attending:

[A person may notice what you reveal. Calling observation theft does not restore secrecy.]

Dagar disliked the tone and accepted the rule.

Merrit wanted design ownership protected even when a tool could be observed publicly.

”Observation is not permission to reproduce.” he said.

Hizon disagreed with applying the claim to every visible method. A tool could contain a protected design. A repair technique learned by watching another craftsperson could not remain owned forever merely because Merrit supplied the first demonstration.

They did not solve every question of craft ownership.

The concord required specific licensing terms for protected designs and prohibited participants from pretending an unmarked public technique belonged to them after the fact.

The fifth principle addressed emergencies.

Dagar wanted every member obligated to provide assistance when another dungeon faced attack.

Merrit refused.

”You possess the strongest defenses. I possess tools and workshops. An automatic obligation requires me to send people into battles they did not choose because your fortress attracted an enemy.”

”Then the agreement offers trade and disappears when survival matters.” Dagar said.

”A promise I cannot fulfill is not defense.”

Max understood both positions. A concord that guaranteed nothing during danger remained limited. An automatic mutual-defense oath could drag every member into unknown wars or expose Sanctuary through an emergency gate.

”Assistance must be requested and accepted.” Max said. ”Every member agrees to answer the request, not necessarily grant it.”

Dagar considered the standard too weak.

Max added another requirement. Members would maintain current emergency contact methods and disclose what categories of assistance they might provide: supplies, evacuation space, information, specialists, or combat forces. No one promised all categories.

Merrit could offer repair, equipment, and temporary workshop capacity. Dagar could offer defensive advisers and trained units subject to his approval. Sanctuary could offer secure meetings, trade access, intelligence from its network, and case-specific assistance approved by Max.

”You do not list resurrection.” Merrit said.

”Correct.”

The tested rule remained in the visitor section. People who voluntarily entered Max’s levels received Sanctuary’s resurrection system under the conditions observed with the Stone Brace. Max did not promise to export the authority or sell guaranteed protection to other dungeons.

Merrit had expected the refusal and stopped pressing.

The document ended with review and withdrawal.

Any member could leave the concord after settling active obligations and arranging the return of visitors and property. No Dungeon Master surrendered the right to end contact.

”An alliance designed for departure.” Dagar said.

”An agreement people cannot leave becomes ownership.” Max replied.

”Easy departure makes betrayal easier.”

”It also means everyone who remains is still choosing the cost.”

Dagar wanted loyalty capable of surviving inconvenience. Max wanted cooperation that did not depend on trapping anyone inside it.

The Redoubt’s captain spoke quietly to Dagar. Their fortress could sign mutual-defense agreements separately when trust justified them. The first concord did not need to contain every promise they might make later.

Dagar accepted.

All three Dungeon Masters signed.

The core recognized no new ownership, class, or reward. No announcement declared the concord successful.

Three temporary communication channels changed status from individual contact to a shared agreement. The system allowed them to add another member only with unanimous approval.

Merrit examined the new interface.

”No reward.” he said.

”You gained two markets and a fortress-training program.” Hizon replied.

”I prefer rewards the system cannot revoke.”

Dagar looked toward Max. ℯℯ𝑙.

”Who leads?”

”No one.” Max replied. ”The host controls each meeting. Decisions affecting all members require all three.”

”You created the terms.”

”With objections from everyone in the room.”

Dagar could have argued that someone eventually needed authority. For now, the concord was too small and too new to require a ruler. He accepted the arrangement because it preserved his equality with Sanctuary.

The meeting ended with practical assignments. The Redoubt would schedule its first outside training group. The Thousand Works would expand the tool trial. Sanctuary would maintain the exchange office and compile safety results without sharing protected records.

The visitors left through their separate gates.

Max returned to the core room with Anna and Quin.

For a few minutes, none of them discussed the agreement.

Anna poured water. Quin set his copy of the signed document on the table and kept one hand on it as if expecting another unresolved clause to appear.

”Did you get what you wanted?” Max asked him.

”I wanted the document to say what everyone meant.” Quin replied. ”I am less certain everyone knows what they will mean when the cost changes.”

”The uncertainty is why it has review conditions.” Anna said.

”Review conditions record a changed mind. They do not prevent one.”

Max did not regard the warning as pessimism. Quin had once trusted an organization whose contracts concealed the decision to abandon his group. He valued precise language because he knew how easily formal promises could be made useless by people with power over the facts.

”Then we judge what they do when the cost changes.” Max said.

Anna looked at the two closed gates.

”And they judge us.”

The concord had not made Sanctuary the leader of three dungeons. It had made Max responsible for proving that the rules he demanded from others would still bind him when they became inconvenient.

The shared channel already contained a new message.

It came from a surviving dungeon that had not previously enabled public contact.

[THE LAST ORCHARD]

[Living Terrain Dungeon]

[Requesting immediate communication with the newly formed three-dungeon agreement.]

[My dungeon survived the First Challenge. Something remained behind after the temporary entrance closed. It has begun learning the routes to my core.]

The message included no demand for soldiers, resurrection, or trade.

It ended with one sentence.

[I need to know whether your concord exists only when cooperation is convenient.]
