Triple X System

The ocean floor surrounding the crushed drop pods was thick with the scent of ozone and iron. Silt hung in dense, gray clouds, swirling slowly in the wake of the battle.

Kyle stood near the edge of a deep fissure, his bare left hand resting on the hilt of his dormant shadow blade. His gauntlet—the dark, living metal wrapped around his right forearm—pulled in the stray shadows cast by the wreckage, absorbing every scrap of stray darkness into his core.

A few paces away, the three surviving members of the Silver Vanguard were forced onto their knees.

Yua stood directly behind them, her long claws resting lightly against the nape of the central knight’s neck. A thin, trickling line of dark blood escaped from under his collar where her claws grazed his skin. On their right, Elara stood with her twin aquatic daggers held low, her cold indigo eyes locked onto the mages’ hands, ready to sever any fingers that attempted to trace a spell-rune in the water.

”Unseal your visors,” Kyle said, his voice flat and even as he stepped toward them.

The lead surviving knight trembled inside his silver plate. His heavy shoulder guards were bent inward from the force of Kyle’s initial assault, and the brass turbine on his back hissed, leaking faint trails of hot oil into the sea. With a stiff, panic-stricken jerk of his arm, he pressed a release switch at his throat.

The heavy iron faceplate split down the middle with a sharp hiss of pressurized air, sliding back to reveal a young, sweat-drenched surface mage. His hair was plastered to his forehead, his face pale, and his lip bleeding where he had bitten down during the drop.

”You... you’re a monster,” the young mage choked out, his eyes darting frantically between Kyle’s dark coat and the dead bodies of his squad members scattered across the seabed. ”The Spire... they told us you were just a rogue dark user hiding in the trench. A surface deserter.”

”They lied to you,” Yua murmured near his ear, her voice dripping with smooth, malicious amusement. ”Does he look like a surface deserter to you?”

”Who is on the command ship?” Kyle asked, ignoring the mage’s panic entirely. He took another step forward, stopping directly in front of the kneeling knight. ”Not the ship’s captain. Not the fleet commander. The presence hovering beneath the keel.”

The young knight’s jaw worked silently for a moment. His eyes filled with a terror far deeper than the fear he had shown when Yua slaughtered his comrades. He looked up at the foggy, pale ceiling of the sea, his chest heaving inside his armor.

”I... I don’t know its name,” the mage whispered, his voice shaking so hard his teeth clicked together. ”Nobody speaks to it. Not even Admiral Thorne. When it boarded the flagship at the surface docks... the sky above the harbor went silent. The gulls stopped flying. The wind just died.”

Elara’s brow furrowed. ”It boarded from the surface?”

”It didn’t board,” the second surviving knight spat from his knees, his visor opening with a clatter. His face was bruised, blood running from his nose. ”It descended. It came down from the high cloud spire three days ago. The Council didn’t give us orders for this drop. *It* gave the order. It doesn’t care about the solar anchors. It doesn’t care about the iron mines or the merfolk sanctuary.”

He looked directly into Kyle’s eyes, his expression a mixture of profound terror and cold, fanatical conviction.

”It came down because of you,” the bruised knight said. ”It said there was a stain in the deep ocean that needed to be erased before it took root.”

’A stain,’ Kyle thought, his pupils slitting slightly. ’It isn’t fighting a war for territory. It’s executing a purge.’

Yua glanced at Kyle, her playful tone vanishing completely. ”Kyle... if it’s listening through their armor communications, it knows we’ve held them.”

”It already knows,” Kyle said softly.

He didn’t need to ask how. The air around them—the very water itself—was growing colder by the second. It wasn’t the natural, deep-sea chill of the abyssal trench. It was a sterile, weightless cold that seemed to freeze the thermal energy right out of the currents.

Above them, deep within the murky twilight of the upper waters, the middle transport ship—the troop carrier—began to groan.

*CREAK...*

The sound echoed through the water like a dying whale. The heavy, double-hulled iron vessel, spanning over three hundred feet in length, suddenly shuddered. Its massive bronze propellers stopped spinning. The glowing blue light-arrays running along its hull flickered once, twice, and then went completely dark.

”What is happening to the transport?” Elara asked, stepping back as she looked up through the gloom. ”Did their engine core fail?”

”No,” Kyle said, his voice dropping into a dangerous hush. ”Look at the hull.”

The iron plating of the massive troop carrier was turning white.

Not white from frost or ice, but white from a sudden, absolute loss of color. The deep iron-gray metal, the copper fittings, the canvas sails tucked against the upper decks—everything on the ship was being stripped of its tone, bleached into a pale, ghostly silver.

Then, without a sound, the three-hundred-foot ship began to buckle.

There was no explosion. No blast of fire, no concussive shockwave, no roar of tearing metal. The massive ship simply folded in half at the center, its reinforced iron spine snapping like a dry twig. Huge plates of silver-bleached steel peeled away from the frame, drifting down through the water like falling leaves.

Hundreds of surface mages and sailors tumbled from the breaking decks. But as they fell into the open ocean, they didn’t scream or thrash. Their bodies, too, were completely bleached of color—their armor turned to pale glass, their hair turned to ash, their skin rendered translucent like salt statues.

The debris didn’t slam into the seabed with kinetic force. The moment the white, bleached pieces of the ship touched the water below a certain depth, they simply dissolved into fine, silver dust, vanishing into the dark current as if they had never existed at all.

The three kneeling Vanguard knights watched the destruction of their own fleet ship in absolute, stunned silence. The young mage who had spoken first didn’t even cry out. He just stared up at the dissolving wreckage, his eyes wide, completely broken.

”It... it sacrificed the entire carrier,” the young mage whispered, a dry, hysterical laugh escaping his lips. ”All five hundred men... just to clear its line of sight...”

”Yua, Elara, fall back to the limestone ridge,” Kyle commanded calmly, his gauntlet flaring with brilliant violet light as he drew upon his shadow energy. ”Do it now.”

”Kyle, we aren’t leaving you behind!” Yua snapped, her crimson eyes flashing with fierce refusal as she grabbed his coat sleeve. ”We fight together!”

”I’m not telling you to run,” Kyle said, turning his head to look her dead in the eye. His dark gaze was cold, focused, and steady. ”I’m telling you to take the high ground on the ridge. If you’re caught in the open water when that thing descends, your physical bodies won’t withstand the pressure field.”

Elara looked at the dissolving silver dust drifting through the water around them, feeling the absolute truth in his words. She bit her lower lip hard enough to draw blood, then grabbed Yua’s hand.

”He’s right, Yua,” Elara said, her voice tight with suppressed emotion. ”We take the ridge and cover his flanks. Move!”

Yua glared at the fog above for a split second, then let out a sharp growl, pivoting on her heel and leaping toward the rocky shelf alongside Elara. They vanished into the shadowed crevices of the limestone wall, their weapons drawn, their eyes fixed on the center of the trench.

Kyle turned back to the three kneeling knights. He raised his right hand, the *Shadow Stitcher’s Gauntlet* extending four thick shadow strings that wrapped tightly around their torsos, lifting them three feet off the seabed.

”What... what are you doing?” the young knight gasped, struggling against the ink-black bindings.

”You wanted to see the end of the war,” Kyle said quietly, his voice echoing through the darkening ocean. ”Watch carefully.”

Above them, the sky of water opened up.

The dissolving remnants of the troop carrier cleared away, leaving a vast, empty column of water stretching all the way up to the command ship. The single point of silver light that had been hovering beneath the command vessel’s keel began to slide downward.

It didn’t fall like a stone or drop like a pod. It moved with a slow, deliberate, infinite weight, drifting down through the ocean at the pace of a falling feather.

As it descended, the ocean around it reacted in terrifying ways.

The dark, nutrient-rich sea water within a fifty-yard radius of the light lost its blue-black hue, turning into crystal-clear, colorless liquid that held no salt, no thermal heat, and no life. Bioluminescent moss along the nearby canyon walls died instantly as the light passed by, its soft purple glow extinguished as if it had never been lit.

The pressure in Kyle’s chest increased tenfold. His *Demon Scales* flared beneath his skin, invisible black patterns igniting along his collarbone and chest to absorb the crushing environmental weight that was trying to compress his ribcage.

’Snow,’ Kyle called out silently in his mind.

’My function is operating under extreme spatial interference,’ Snow replied, her voice distant, like someone speaking from the end of a long, dark tunnel. ’The entity descending toward your coordinate does not possess an internal mana core. It is an authority unit. A pure celestial construct.’

’Can it be damaged by physical attacks?’ Kyle asked, his thumb flicking the hilt of his shadow sword, sending a cold vibration through his arm.

’Physical attacks will suffer a seventy-percent density reduction upon entering its presence field,’ Snow warned quietly. ’Dark Flame and Shadow Energy will remain effective, but energy consumption will double. Host must maintain absolute core concentration.’

’Understood,’ Kyle thought.

He stood alone in the center of the devastated clearing, surrounded by crushed drop pods, dead mages, and three kneeling survivors bound in dark strings.

The descending point of light was now only fifty yards above the seabed.

As it drew closer, the silver light began to take shape. It was not a grand, towering beast, nor was it an old mage clad in divine robes.

It was a figure roughly seven feet tall, slender and perfectly symmetrical, wearing long, seamless robes woven from what looked like spun glass and polished silver thread. Its body held no features—no face, no eyes, no hair, no mouth. Where its face should have been, there was only a smooth, oval plate of mirror-like silver that reflected the surrounding dark ocean back at itself.

Hovering behind its back were six thin, geometric rings of pale silver metal that rotated in slow, silent, opposing directions. Each ring was etched with ancient, unreadable glyphs that held no color, radiating a cold, blinding silence that made the sea itself hold its breath.

The celestial presence stopped ten feet above the ocean floor, hovering effortlessly in the crystal-clear, dead water.

It did not open its mouth, for it had none. It did not raise a weapon, for its hands were folded calmly inside its wide, spun-glass sleeves.

Yet, a voice resonated through the seabed—not as a sound travelling through the water, but as a cold, absolute command delivered directly into the minds of every living soul within a mile radius.

’The stain has grown deep.’ the voice spoke, holding no emotion, no anger, and no warmth. ’The dark must be unmade.’

Kyle took a single step forward, his boot crushing a piece of silver glass beneath his heel. He raised his right hand, the living metal of the *Shadow Stitcher’s Gauntlet* rippling with fierce, unyielding dark energy as he stared straight into the blank, mirrored face of the sky’s messenger.

”Try it,” Kyle said.
