Triple X System

The single point of silver light above did not flare, flicker, or explode into a brilliant beam. It simply hovered beneath the transport ship’s keel, impossibly sharp, like a needle poking through a black curtain.

Kyle did not take his eyes off it. His gauntlet continued its restless, liquid shifting against his forearm, the dark metal rippling in small, rhythmic waves that matched the thrumming in his pulse.

”We move,” Kyle said. His voice was low, devoid of panic, but carried a flat certainty that made both women snap their attention away from the sky. ”Now. Back toward the ridge.”

Yua didn’t argue. She slipped off the bronze casing of the destroyed probe, her body dropping low to skim the seabed. ”You feel it too, don’t you? That isn’t mana. It feels... dry. Like staring into a salt flat.”

”It doesn’t feel like anything at all,” Elara corrected, her voice tight as she retreated alongside them, her feet kicking through the thick silt. ”That’s what’s wrong with it. Mana moves. It flows, it warms, it carries weight. Whatever is up there... it feels like a hole in the water.”

They fell back beneath the heavy overhang of a jagged limestone shelf, putting hundreds of tons of solid rock and dead coral between themselves and the open ocean above.

Kyle leaned his back against the cold stone, taking a slow, measured breath. The underwater cold usually didn’t bother him—his demon physiology adapted to extremes effortlessly—but the air in his lungs felt strangely thin.

’Snow, run a background diagnostic on my core,’ Kyle thought, keeping his inner voice calm.

’My diagnostic processes are operating under heavy atmospheric dampening,’ Snow’s response came, but her voice sounded different—stripped of its usual crisp, artificial clarity, replaced by a smooth, quiet murmur that sounded almost human. ’Your internal energy reserves are completely stable. However, the external environmental pressure is rising despite no change in depth or water mass.’

’It’s suppressing the local aura,’ Kyle noted silently. ’Not crushing it like a physical weight, but mute-buttoning it.’

”Kyle,” Yua said, stepping up close. She reached out, her pale fingers wrapping around his bare left wrist. Her skin was unusually warm against his. ”Your heart rate is steady, but your blood is running hot. What did you see when you looked at that ship?”

”Nothing,” Kyle said, turning his head to look at her. ”That’s the problem. When I try to inspect a target, I usually see structure. I see the flow of their energy, their balance, their weak points. When I looked at that hull, my vision just bounced off. It was like trying to look at a mirror placed directly under a blinding lantern.”

”An absolute ward,” Elara whispered, resting her shoulder against the damp limestone wall. Her twin daggers were held loosely in her hands, her knuckles pale against the leather grips. ”In the royal archives of the deep sanctuary, there are ancient tablets written by the first abyssal queen. She described the war above the clouds—before the surface mages built their kingdoms. She wrote that when the celestial vessels descended, they didn’t bring armies. They brought silence.”

”Silence?” Yua frowned, her crimson eyes flashing with annoyance. ”What does that mean? They don’t speak?”

”It means they erase the noise of everything else,” Elara replied, looking out through the gap in the limestone shelf toward the empty, murky expanse of the upper ridge. ”No battle cries. No roaring flames. Just absolute, immovable order. If one of those entities is truly aboard that command ship, the surface mages aren’t here to conquer the Iron Shallows. They’re here to sanitize it.”

Kyle let out a low, dry chuckle, though his dark eyes remained sharp and analytical. ”Sanitize? They’ll have to find us first.”

He raised his right arm, flexing his fingers inside the new gauntlet. The living metal settled immediately, flattening out into a smooth, dark surface that absorbed the faint ambient light of the underwater cave.

”Vaelen’s scouts said there were three ships,” Kyle said, turning to look at both of them. ”A heavy transport, a troop carrier, and the command vessel. The probes we smashed were just the forward perimeter. They’re going to realize those scouts went dark in less than ten minutes.”

”When they do, they’ll drop heavy troops,” Yua said, her lips curving into a tight, eager line. ”Human mages. Knights in heavy silver plate. People with blood that bleeds red.”

”Good,” Kyle said quietly. ”Because I need to test how fast this gauntlet can thread a shadow string through heavy armor.”

”Kyle,” Elara warned softly, stepping into his line of sight. ”Don’t underestimate this. If that presence up there is what I think it is, it isn’t like fighting Archmage Vane. Vane was arrogant, loud, and relied on his arrays. A celestial presence doesn’t have arrogance. It doesn’t have anger. It just executes.”

”I know,” Kyle said, his tone softening slightly as he looked down at the mer-princess. He reached out, his bare left hand resting gently against the side of her neck, his thumb brushing over the soft, pale scales along her jawline. ”I’m not going to run headfirst into a ship I can’t read, Elara. We draw them down here. We force them to fight in these narrow limestone trenches where their heavy ships can’t maneuver.”

Elara leaned into his touch for a brief second, her eyes fluttering shut as a faint wave of warmth spread through her chest from his palm. The subtle, quiet pull of his charm passive washed over her, steadying the nervous flutter in her heart.

”They won’t come down themselves,” she murmured, opening her indigo eyes to look at him. ”The surface commanders are cowardly. They’ll send their elite vanguards first—the Silver Vanguard.”

”Then we butcher the Vanguard,” Yua said simply, stepping up beside Kyle and pressing her shoulder against his. ”And we make enough noise down here to force whoever is sitting in that command chair to step out into the dark.”

Twenty minutes later, the ocean floor shifted.

It started not with a sound, but with a sudden, massive surge of water pressure that slammed down from above, flattening the swaying sea kelp and forcing clouds of fine white silt to erupt from every crack in the rock.

Through the murky, pale blue twilight of the upper shelf, six heavy metallic pods detached from the belly of the second transport ship—the troop carrier. The pods didn’t fall slowly. Encased in pressurized blue light-arrays, they sliced through the ocean depths like heavy iron darts, slamming into the limestone seabed with a series of muffled, thunderous impacts that shook the entire ridge.

*THUM-THUM-THUM-THUM!*

The impacts carved deep craters into the rock, sending shards of fossilized coral flying through the water.

Before the silt could even settle, the sides of the pods hissed open, releasing clouds of superheated steam that boiled the surrounding water. From within the iron pods stepped twelve massive figures clad from head to toe in thick, overlapping plates of silver-and-white alloy.

These were not ordinary surface mages. They carried heavy, broad-bladed greatswords etched with glowing light runes, their faces completely concealed behind smooth, faceless iron visors. Attached to the back of their heavy armor were dual aquatic propulsion units that hummed with a low, rhythmic vibration.

”Silver Vanguard,” Elara whispered from their hiding spot beneath the jagged rocks, thirty yards away. ”Spire elites. Every single one of them is trained to fight in high-pressure aquatic environments.”

Kyle observed them quietly through the gloom. His vision remained sharp, tracking their movements as the twelve knights formed a tight, defensive perimeter around the drop pods.

”Their armor is heavy,” Yua observed, her fingers twitching at her side. ”Thick enough to turn a glancing claw strike.”

”Thick metal just means more shadow to catch,” Kyle said softly.

He didn’t wait for the Vanguard to disperse and begin their search pattern. He raised his right forearm, letting the dark violet runes along the gauntlet ignite with a cold, suppressed pulse of power.

’Shadow Bind.’

From the deep, pitch-black shadows cast by the crushed drop pods, six thick, ink-black tendrils erupted silently into the water. Enhanced by the ancient artifact, the tendrils didn’t just wrap around the knights’ limbs—they moved like living, liquid snakes, seeking out the narrow gaps in their silver armor at the joints, under the armpits, and behind the knees.

*SNAP-SNAP-SNAP!*

Three of the rear knights were yanked violently off their feet before they could even draw their greatswords! The shadow strings wrapped tight around their propulsion units, crushing the delicate brass turbines inside and locking their heavy joints in place.

”Ambush!” the lead Vanguard commander shouted, his voice muffled behind his iron visor, amplified through a throat-rune. ”Sector four! Light arrays on, full sweep!”

The remaining nine knights instantly raised their heavy left gauntlets, triggering brilliant, blinding flashes of golden light that illuminated the entire underwater trench.

”Light won’t save you down here,” Kyle’s voice echoed through the dark water, calm, cold, and impossibly close.

Kyle materialized directly behind the lead commander, emerging from the shadow of the commander’s own shoulder cape. His agility was a terrifying blur, his movement completely silent.

Before the commander could pivot his massive greatsword, Kyle raised his left hand, pressing his open palm directly against the back of the knight’s iron helmet.

”Death’s Call.”

Two dense, golf-ball-sized spheres of concentrated pitch-black energy manifested directly against the steel plating. The black energy didn’t blow the helmet apart—it dissolved straight through the metal like burning acid, sinking deep into the commander’s skull.

The commander let out a choked, wet gurgle as his vitality was instantly Leeched out of him. His body went limp inside the heavy silver suit, his armor collapsing onto the seabed like an empty iron shell.

”Commander!” two knights roared, pivoting their weapons and thrusting their glowing light blades toward Kyle’s chest.

Kyle didn’t even bother dodging.

He pivoted on his heel, swinging his right leg in a devastating, horizontal arc.

The *Abyssal Talon Manifest* ignited beneath his skin. His right leg, heavy with dark shadow essence, slammed directly into the first knight’s raised sword blade.

*BOOM!*

The sheer kinetic impact, combined with the passive traits of the talon, shattered the reinforced light sword into a hundred glowing fragments. The kick continued its arc, slamming into the knight’s chest plate with enough force to cave in the silver metal and send the warrior flying fifty yards across the trench, leaving a trail of dark blood suspended in the water.

*Passive Proc: Abyssal Reflex.*

As the second knight tried to stab a short dagger into Kyle’s exposed side, a pitch-black shadow claw erupted automatically from Kyle’s shadow, striking the knight across the visor with a brutal, tearing slash that shattered the iron faceplate and threw him backward into the silt.

In less than thirty seconds, four elite Silver Vanguard knights were dead on the seabed.

Yua and Elara struck simultaneously from the flanks. Yua moved like a dark red hurricane, her claws slicing through the unarmored neck-seams of two mages, while Elara’s twin daggers flashed in graceful, lethal arcs, piercing the power cores built into the small of their backs.

The remaining knights fell back in a panic, forming a desperate ring around the central drop pod, their heavy light shields raised high to ward off the shadows.

”Regroup! Fall back to the upper line!” one of the surviving knights yelled into his communicator. ”The target isn’t an F-rank irregular! He’s using ancient shadow arts! We need heavy support!”

Kyle walked slowly through the drifting cloud of silt and blood, his gauntlet humming warmly against his arm. He didn’t rush to finish the survivors.

Instead, he stopped, his dark eyes drifting upward, looking past the heavy iron hulls of the transport ships, straight toward the sky above the sea.

The silver point of light beneath the command vessel hadn’t moved.

It hadn’t flared when the Vanguard fell. It hadn’t sent down reinforcements. It simply remained hovering in the dark water, silent, unblinking, and cold—watching every move Kyle made with an absolute, terrifying detachment that felt far heavier than any blade.

Kyle felt a strange, cold vibration in his chest—not fear, but a sharp, thrilling instinct that told him the true battle hadn’t even begun yet.

”Keep three of them alive,” Kyle said softly to Yua and Elara, his voice carrying clearly through the water. ”I want the ship above to see exactly what happens when they send mortals down into my shadow.”
