Triple X System

For three agonizing hours, the column of forty-seven refugees moved through the spectral hush of the forest like a ghost procession.

The air within Elara’s dome remained sweet and artificial, contrasting sharply with the dead, mana-starved void just inches beyond the golden shimmer. Every breath taken inside the sphere was a testament to Elara’s waning stamina. Sweat had soaked through the back of her tunic, and her pale hands trembled continuously around the smooth wooden shaft of her wand. Yet, she kept her posture straight, her golden eyes fixed on the back of Kyle’s head as he led them through the grey ash.

Beside Kyle, Yua walked with the light, dangerous grace of a hunting panther. Her fingers remained tightly interwoven with his, her cool skin a grounded anchor against the unnatural heat pulsing off the strange red fruits hanging above.

[Kyle,] Snow’s voice resonated inside his mind, warm and keenly attentive, wrapped in that distinct, living presence that made her feel more like a guardian at his back than an internal interface. [The spatial density of the forest is shifting ahead. The grey trees are thinning, but the atmospheric toxicity is spiking by nearly forty percent. You are approaching the edge of the first region.]

’How far until we hit the boundary?’ Kyle asked silently, his eyes scanning the looming grey trunks with practiced focus.

[Less than four hundred yards,] Snow confirmed, her tone laced with quiet encouragement. [You’ve guided them through the core territory of the Erphindahs without alerting the main colony. But Kyle, look at Elara. Her spiritual resonance is faltering. She cannot sustain the large atmospheric ward if the next environment demands heavy defensive spellcasting.]

Kyle glanced back over his shoulder. Snow was right. Elara’s skin had turned a ghostly, translucent white, and every rise and fall of her chest was shallow and rapid.

”Elara,” Kyle whispered, his voice barely louder than a breath as he paused beneath the sprawling roots of an ancient grey titan.

Elara stopped, her knees buckling slightly before Marcus reached out from the front line of the refugees to steady her elbow. She gave Marcus a grateful glance before turning her exhausted golden eyes to Kyle. ”I’m... I’m holding, Kyle,” she panted, her voice a fragile raspy breath. ”Don’t... don’t slow down for me.”

”We aren’t slowing down, but we need to adjust,” Kyle whispered, his dark eyes softening with genuine concern. He stepped closer, taking her free hand in his. ”You’re burning through your core faster than you can regenerate. Snow says the forest ends four hundred yards ahead, but the toxic density spikes right after.”

Yua stepped up beside them, her crimson eyes scanning Elara’s pale face with analytical precision. She reached out, placing her hand gently over Elara’s heart. A faint, crimson light flickered from Yua’s palm, seeping through Elara’s robes.

Elara gasped softly as a sudden flush of warm color returned to her cheeks, her ragged breathing instantly steadying. ”What... what did you just do?”

”I injected a small portion of refined vital blood directly into your vascular system,” Yua explained softly, a gentle, sisterly warmth in her voice. ”It won’t replenish your magic, Elara, but it will keep your physical body from collapsing under the strain of mana exhaustion. Pureblood vampires don’t just take life—we can sustain it, too.”

Elara looked at Yua, a faint, humbled smile breaking through her exhaustion. ”Thank you, Yua. I... I owe you one.”

”Save it until we’re off this horrible red rock,” Yua smiled back, her crimson eyes gleaming with quiet affection before she turned her head back toward the path ahead.

[Kyle, heads up,] Snow interjected urgently, her voice tightening inside his mind. [Movement on the perimeter. Three hundred feet out, at eleven o’clock. It’s not an Erphindah.]

Kyle instantly snapped his attention forward. Through the dim, grey trunks, the ground began to slope steeply downward toward a vast, wide trench that cut through the red sand landscape like an open, festering wound.

The grey trees ended abruptly at the rim of this massive canyon. But what filled the canyon wasn’t rock or water—it was a churning, thick river of black, viscous liquid, bubbling with foul dark smoke that rose into the sky in dark, poisonous plumes.

”The second region,” Kyle murmured, recognizing the landscape from his internal map. ”**The Blood Drain**.”

”It’s black...” Marcus whispered from behind, his voice trembling as he peered over the edge of the slope. ”The river... it’s pitch black.”

”It’s not water,” Yua said, stepping up to the edge of the treeline. She knelt, extending a finger toward the rising black vapors, her eyes narrowing as she analyzed the aura. ”It’s concentrated, corrupted death-fluid. The ancient texts called it the ’Black Bile of Kraken.’ It’s the byproduct of the planet’s heart filtering out the decay from its core. If even a single drop touches human flesh, it dissolves bone in seconds.”

”And there’s no bridge,” Elara said, her voice dropping into dismay as she looked across the massive expanse. The black river was at least a hundred yards wide, churning with jagged, floating chunks of obsidian rock that drifted along the sluggish, dark current.

[Kyle,] Snow’s voice rang out, clear and decisive. [Scan the riverbanks. The structure of this region is governed by fluid dynamics tied to the planet’s heartbeat. Look at the obsidian chunks floating in the black liquid.]

Kyle activated his vision, the world shifting into distinct energy signatures. ’Snow, those rocks aren’t floating randomly.’

[Correct, Kyle,] Snow confirmed smoothly, her tone filled with intellectual satisfaction. [They are magnetic stepping stones anchored to the riverbed by heavy ley-lines. They move in a strict, rhythmic sequence matching the pulse of Planet Kraken’s core. Every twelve seconds, a row of six obsidian stones aligns across the black river, creating a temporary path before sinking back beneath the corrosive liquid.]

”We have to jump them,” Kyle said aloud, turning to face Yua and Elara. ”The obsidian platforms form a crossing every twelve seconds, but they only stay above the black liquid for four seconds before they submerge.”

Elara looked horrified. ”Kyle, there are forty-seven people here! Old men, women, small children! They can’t leap across moving, slippery rocks over a river of acid in four seconds!”

”They won’t have to jump alone,” Yua said firmly. She looked at Kyle, her crimson eyes glowing with absolute resolve. ”My **[Sanguine Veil]** can form blood-tethers. I can bind five refugees at a time to my own body and leap across the platforms, carrying them through the air.”

”That’s too much weight for one person, Yua,” Kyle countered, grabbing her arm. ”Even with your vampire strength, doing that nine times across a hundred yards of acidic air will drain your blood core completely!”

”Then you carry some, and I carry some,” Yua argued, placing her hand over his on her arm, looking straight into his dark eyes with fierce devotion. ”We do this together, Kyle. We didn’t cross galaxies for you to carry every burden on your own back.”

Kyle stared into her crimson eyes, feeling the fierce, unwavering love radiating from her soul. The tension in his jaw relaxed, and he gave a slow, deep nod. ”Together.”

[Kyle, I have calculated the optimal weight distribution and timing sequence,] Snow added, her voice pulsing with a warm, reassuring presence that felt like a hand on his shoulder. [I will count down the twelve-second heartbeat cycle directly in your mind. When I say leap, you and Yua move. Elara will stay in the center of the river on the largest stable pillar to maintain the atmospheric dome so no one breathes the black smoke during the crossing.]

Elara nodded, summoning the absolute last reserves of her strength as she raised her wand. ”I can anchor myself on a middle rock. As long as you two get the people across the gap, I’ll keep the air clean.”

Kyle turned back to the crowd of refugees, his voice firm and absolute. ”Listen up! We are crossing the river now! It’s going to be fast, it’s going to be terrifying, but not a single one of you is going to fall today! Marcus, gather the children first!”

As Marcus began organizing the terrified humans, Kyle took his position at the edge of the grey ridge, his dark shadow-boots crackling with faint, dark energy. Yua stood at his left, her hands already weaving intricate, glowing red threads of blood magic that coiled gently around the waists of the first five young children.

[Heartbeat pulse incoming in three... two... one...] Snow’s voice echoed in Kyle’s mind, perfectly timed and absolute. [NOW, KYLE!]

”GO!” Kyle roared softly.

In a flash of crimson mist and dark shadows, Kyle and Yua launched themselves out over the terrifying, churning abyss of the Black River, carrying the lives of humanity on their shoulders as they plunged into the second nightmare of Planet Kraken.
