Triple X System

The entity hovering above the dead seabed did not move its hands, nor did its spun-glass sleeves shift in the motionless water. The six geometric rings behind its back continued their slow, silent rotation, casting cold silver reflections across the oval plate of mirror-like metal that served as its face.

Kyle stood his ground, the dark living metal of his gauntlet pulsing with a deep, violet hum. His right boot was planted firmly against the slagged basalt, his left hand resting on his hip, his posture deceptively calm.

Then, the oppressive, weightless silence was shattered.

The sound that echoed through the water wasn’t a booming declaration or a resounding battle cry. It was a low, amused huff—a raspy, dry chuckle that sounded eerily like a weary traveler laughing at an inside joke.

”The dark must be unmade,” the voice repeated, but the cold, absolute resonance was gone. Instead, it sounded remarkably like an ordinary man adopting a theatrical, pompous accent to mock someone else. The celestial presence shook its head slowly, its dark ash-colored cloak swaying in the colorless water. ”Gods above... that is exactly what Michael would have said.”

The name hit the water like a dropped iron anvil.

Kyle froze.

The steady, rhythmic pulse of his shadow core missed a beat, stuttering violently against his ribs. Beneath his skin, the dark, dormant traits of his demon essence flared with an uncontrollable, white-hot heat. His pupils slit into thin, predatory needles, and the faint blue veins along his neck turned a deep, bruised purple as his blood rushed to his temples.

He didn’t speak. He didn’t move. But the air around him grew so dense with sheer, unadulterated hostility that the seabed beneath his boots began to crack, spiderwebbing outward in sharp, dark fractures.

The celestial presence tilted its head slightly, its mirrored face reflecting the sudden, violent shift in Kyle’s expression.

”Ah,” the angel murmured softly, the dry, human tone returning to its voice. It shifted its posture, leaning back slightly in mid-air as if resting against an invisible wall. ”So you know that name too.”

Kyle’s jaw set tight, his breath coming in slow, heavy hitches that boiled the water near his lips. ”What did you just say?”

”I said we both feel the exact same way when that name gets brought up,” the angel replied, resting one slender, ash-cloaked arm over the other. Beneath the heavy fabric of its hood, no features were visible, but the sheer, conversational casualness of its tone was far more unnerving than its previous sterile command. ”It leaves a terrible taste in the back of the throat, doesn’t it? That self-righteous, golden bastard and his endless sermons about order.”

Kyle took a half-step forward, his right hand closing into a tight fist as his gauntlet flared with volatile, pitch-black energy. ”Who the hell are you?”

The mirrored faceplate stared down at him for a quiet, stretched second.

”Wouldn’t you like to know,” the celestial murmured.

Before Kyle could draw his shadow blade, the space between them vanished.

There was no sound. No warning ripple in the water, no surge of mana, no gathering of light. The angel didn’t glide forward or launch itself off the ocean floor. One microsecond it was hovering ten feet away, and the next, its ash-draped shoulder was resting less than an inch from Kyle’s chest.

”Let’s take this somewhere quieter,” the angel whispered near his ear.

*FOOM!*

A blinding, incandescent burst of white fire erupted directly between them.

The heat wasn’t thermal—it didn’t boil the ocean or create steam. It simply erased the water entirely, replacing the cold, dark pressure of the Iron Shallows with a roaring, weightless vacuum of pure, blinding light. The sudden light consumed Kyle’s vision, scorching away the dark shapes of the seabed, the crushed drop pods, and the surrounding limestone walls in a fraction of a second.

The sensation of gravity disappeared instantly.

Kyle felt his boots lose contact with the rock, his body being dragged through a violent, spiraling tear in spatial coordinates. The roaring white light washed over his skin, burning away the ocean scent and replacing it with the sharp, metallic tang of ozone and dry ash.

Then, as abruptly as it had started, the roaring stopped.

Kyle slammed his feet down onto a solid, hard surface, stumbling back two paces as he instinctively raised his gauntlet, a solid blade of dark shadow solidifying in his right grip.

His eyes adjusted rapidly, sweeping his surroundings.

The ocean was gone. The dark basalt, the thermal currents, the sea kelp, and the murky twilight of the upper shelf had completely vanished.

He was standing in a vast, endless white space. The ground beneath his boots was a smooth, seamless expanse of polished ivory that reflected nothing, stretching out toward a horizon that didn’t exist. There was no sky, no sun, no walls, and no shadows—just a blinding, uniform white void that held no depth and no sound.

A few yards away, the angel stood casually, its ash-colored cloak draped loosely over its slender frame, its six pale silver rings hovering behind its back, rotating in their slow, silent cycles.

Kyle narrowed his eyes, his dark coat heavy against his shoulders in the dry, still air. ”Where are we?”

”Far enough away that your little friends won’t get collateralized,” the angel replied smoothly, dusting a specks of white ash from its sleeve. ”And far enough that the Spire’s scrying mirrors can’t record what we’re about to talk about.”

Back in the Iron Shallows, the sudden burst of light died as quickly as it had appeared.

The ocean water rushed violently back into the empty space left behind by the explosion, slamming into the limestone walls with a deafening, underwater clap that echoed for miles through the deep canyons.

Cloudy silt churned through the water, obscuring everything in a thick, gray fog.

As the silt slowly began to settle, Yua dropped down from the limestone ridge, her bare feet slamming onto the seabed with enough force to shatter the stone beneath her. Her crimson eyes were wide, her pupils dilated into tiny, frantic slits as her vampiric instincts roared in her chest.

”Kyle!” she screamed, her voice cracking with a raw, desperate rage that shattered the quiet of the trench.

She lunged forward, her claws fully extended, slicing through the drifting clouds of white silt. She reached the central clearing where Kyle had been standing just seconds ago, but there was nothing left.

No blood. No shadow energy. No trace of his coat or his aura.

The ground where he had stood was completely smooth, polished into a seamless disc of white, glassy slag that held no warmth and no scent.

”Kyle!” Yua spun around, her long hair whipping through the water. Her teeth were bared in a terrifying, predatory snarl, her blood running white-hot with pure, unadulterated fury.

Elara landed beside her, her twin aquatic daggers held in tight, trembling grips. Her pale blue skin was flushed, her indigo eyes scanning the dark water in absolute disbelief. She raised her left hand, trying to channel her aquatic sensing spell to trace the local spatial threads, but the ocean around them felt completely hollowed out—the natural mana currents wiped clean.

”He’s... he’s not here,” Elara whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably. ”I can’t feel his bond marking. The connection... it isn’t broken, but it feels like it’s coming from outside the world.”

”Where is he?!” Yua roared, pivoting on her heel and locking her crimson gaze onto the remaining surface forces.

Forty yards away, hovering near the edge of the trench, was the primary command vessel. Its lower light arrays were flickering erratically, its hull groaning under the sudden spatial vacuum that had been created when the angel vanished.

Beside the ship, a dozen remaining mages and squad commanders from the upper deck had dropped into the water on small propulsion boards, their shields raised, their weapons drawn.

Yua didn’t hesitate. She didn’t ask questions. She didn’t calculate the odds.

She vanished.

*SWOOSH!*

She reappeared directly above the lead squad commander, her red eyes burning like twin suns in the murky gloom. Her claws descended in a devastating, downward arc, coated in thick, condensed blood-mana.

*CRUNCH!*

The commander’s reinforced light shield shattered like cheap crystal on impact. Yua’s claws tore clean through his silver chest plate, ripping his torso open and painting the ocean floor in a sudden, thick cloud of red.

Before the dead commander’s body could even hit the seabed, Yua swept her leg around, kicking the second mage beside him straight into the limestone wall with enough force to cave in his ribs and collapse his skull.

”Speak!” Yua snarled, grabbing the third mage by his throat with her left hand, lifting his entire body off his propulsion board. Her claws dug deep into his neck, drawing blood. ”Where did that thing take him?! What did it do with Kyle?!”

The mage gagged, his hands frantically clawing at her wrist, his face turning dark blue behind his open visor. ”I... I don’t know! We don’t know!”

”Liar!” Yua screamed, her crimson aura flaring so violently that the water around them turned boiling hot.

”He’s telling the truth, Yua!” Elara called out, dropping down beside her and planting her dagger through the heart of another advancing vanguard soldier without even looking at him. Her face was pale, but her eyes were sharp, analytical, and terrified. ”Look at them! Look at their faces!”

Yua paused, her claws still pressed against the mage’s throat, and looked up toward the main transport ship.

The surface mages lining the upper railings of the command vessel weren’t celebrating. They weren’t raising their weapons in victory. They were staring down into the dark water with absolute, paralyzing horror.

The fleet commander standing on the ship’s forward bridge was pressing his hands against the scrying glass, his mouth open in a silent, panicked scream as he tried frantically to recalibrate his tracking arrays. The silver rings, the absolute light, the sudden disappearance of both the target and the celestial entity—none of it was part of the Spire’s battle plan.

”They didn’t order this,” Elara said softly, her voice carrying through the quiet water. ”The celestial... it didn’t come here to follow the Council’s orders. It acted on its own.”

Yua stared at the terrified mage in her grip for a long, quiet second.

*CRACK!*

With a brutal twist of her wrist, she snapped his neck, tossing his limp body into the sand like trash. She stood up slowly, her claws dripping with red blood, her long hair floating wildly in the dark currents.

She turned her gaze upward, locking her crimson eyes onto the massive hull of the command transport ship.

”They brought it here,” Yua said, her voice dropping into a low, terrifying whisper that made even Elara shudder. ”They opened the door for that thing to take him.” 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

She raised her right hand, wiping the blood from her cheek, her pupils glowing with an ancient, murderous light.

”We kill every single one of them on that ship,” Yua growled, stepping forward into the dark water. ”And then we tear down the Spire until we find him.”
