Triple X System

The shuttle crashed onto the hot, blood-red sand of Planet Kraken with a deafening metallic screech, skidding three hundred yards before grinding to a halt against a jagged obsidian outcrop.

Inside the wrecked cabin, dust settled over forty-seven terrified, coughing humans. The descent had been brutal, but they were alive.

Kyle was the first to kick the warped emergency door open. The moment the seal broke, a wave of suffocating, sulfur-heavy heat washed inside.

’Why does this remind me of that place.’ His immediately frowned, the moment he came in contact with kraken corroded air.

He stepped out onto the red dunes, his boots sinking into the grit. Skyward, the horizon was dominated by an impossible sight: the planet itself wasn’t a standard sphere, but a vast, oval-shaped heart suspended in the void, pulsing with a deep, rhythmic red light that felt like a slow, cosmic heartbeat.

”Out! Everyone out!” Kyle called back, helping Marcus lower an elderly woman through the hatch.

Beside him, Yua stepped down onto the red sand, her dark cloak fluttering in the hot wind. She immediately covered her nose, her crimson eyes scanning the surreal landscape with a strange, heavy familiarity. ”The air...” she whispered, her throat dry. ”It smells like rot and iron. I haven’t smelled air like this since the old texts in the vampire archives.”

”It’s toxic,” Elara said, stumbling out of the ship behind them. ”Kinda like a mini hell.” She joked, earning an awkward side glance from kyle.

Elara then did something strange. She held her polished wooden wand tightly, her face pale and sweat-beaded. ”The atmospheric composition here is saturated with heavy dark decay. For unawakened humans, breathing this directly will collapse their lungs in less than an hour.”

Before Marcus or the refugees could panic, Elara raised her wand, her knuckles turning white. She closed her eyes, chanting under her breath in a high-tier ancient dialect. A shimmering, dome-shaped barrier of pale golden light expanded from her wand, enveloping all forty-seven refugees and shielding them from the deadly atmosphere.

The moment the spell settled, Elara dropped to one knee, gasping for breath as her golden eyes flickered weakly.

”Elara!” Kyle caught her by the shoulder. ”Are you crazy? You just spent half your magic getting us through the portal!”

”I don’t have a choice,” she croaked, leaning heavily against his arm, tears of genuine frustration pricking the corners of her eyes. ”I didn’t tell you back in the sanctuary, Kyle... but opening a dimensional rift across three sectors drained me to my absolute limit. I can’t teleport them anywhere else. I don’t have the energy left. If I drop this air-purification ward, they die.”

She looked up at him, her voice trembling. ”And it gets worse. Nothing grows here except death. The rivers on this planet are pitch-black—one drop of that water will burn your throat out. Every meal, every drop of clean water for these forty-seven people has to be conjured by my light magic. And doing that drains me faster than fighting.”

Kyle gritted his teeth, looking out over the desolate red dunes toward a looming, ominous treeline half a mile away.

*Kyle,* Snow’s voice chimed inside his mind. It wasn’t the flat, robotic tone of a system interface anymore; her voice carried a warm, anxious thread of genuine concern, like a partner standing right behind his shoulder. *Please listen to me. We need to get everyone out of the open red sand right now. The thermal heat is rising, and Elara’s shield won’t hold if she faints from heatstroke.*

’I hear you, Snow,’ Kyle thought back. ’Where’s the nearest cover?’

*There’s a fissure in the cliffside three hundred yards to the east,* Snow guided him smoothly, her voice soothing the edge of his panic. *It’s deep, cold stone. It will shield the refugees from the wind and let Elara pull her barrier in close so she doesn’t burn out.*

”Marcus!” Kyle called out, keeping one arm around Elara’s waist. ”Head for that fissure in the mountain wall! Move!”

Twenty minutes later, they had settled deep inside a cool, high-ceilinged stone cavern embedded in the obsidian cliff face. The rock walls blocked the howling heat-wind, allowing Elara to shrink the radius of her light barrier to cover just the mouth of the cave, saving her precious energy.

With an exhausted sigh, Elara flicked her wand toward a clear flat rock. A faint golden circle illuminated the stone, and five wooden bowls filled with clean water and simple white bread materialized.

”That’s all I can manage for tonight,” Elara panted, sitting down hard against the cave wall, her forehead damp as she rested her head against the cool stone. ”I have to reserve the rest of my energy to maintain the air barrier while everyone sleeps.”

Marcus divided the food and water meticulously among the children and the elderly, making sure every refugee got a share, while Kyle, Yua, and Elara sat near the inner cavern wall to map out their next move.

Yua sat close to Kyle, her shoulder pressed against his. She looked out toward the entrance of the cave, her crimson eyes unusually sharp.

”I know this place,” Yua said softly, her voice carrying a quiet depth that made both Kyle and Elara turn to look at her. ”Not because I’ve been here... but because pureblood vampires were born from ancient realms like this before the Spire took over. Planet Kraken isn’t just a wasteland, Kyle. It’s a living, hungry entity. The gray trees out there? Their grey wood is hard as iron, and those pulsing red fruits are filled with concentrated blood poison. If you touch them without protection, they seep straight through your skin.”

*She’s entirely right, Kyle,* Snow added inside his head, her tone solemn and filled with quiet urgency. *My internal readings match her historical records. Planet Kraken’s core is pulsing on a strict ninety-six-hour cycle. You have less than four days to reach the Heart of Kraken at the center of the world, or the atmospheric decay will permanently collapse this entire sector.*

Kyle leaned forward, using a sharp fragment of obsidian to sketch a rough map on the cavern floor. ”Four days,” he said aloud, looking up at Yua and Elara. ”We have ninety-six hours to reach the Heart of Kraken. Snow just confirmed the planetary cycle is decaying.”

Elara wiped her brow, leaning her wand against her knee. ”What’s standing between us and the core?”

”Four main regions,” Kyle said, tapping the obsidian stick against the first section of his drawing. ”The first one is right outside this ridge: **The Silent Forest**.”

Yua peered closer at the drawing, her dark hair falling over her shoulder. ”The grey treeline with the red fruit. That forest stretches for miles, Kyle. And the air inside is completely dead. There is no natural mana or oxygen beneath that grey canopy.”

”Which means my light barrier is the only thing keeping the forty-seven humans alive while we walk through,” Elara realized, her face turning even paler. ”I’ll have to stretch the ward continuous for miles...”

”And you can’t cast any loud spells while doing it,” Kyle warned, his face dead serious.

Elara frowned. ”Why? What’s in those woods?”

*Erphindahs,* Snow warned Kyle, her voice ringing clearly in his mind. *Kyle, make sure Elara understands the danger. Erphindahs are grey, bat-like creatures covered in black spots with blood-red eyes. They don’t use vision; they hunt purely through acoustic vibration. If anyone in the line makes a sound—a dropped weapon, a scream, a loud spell—they will swarm in seconds.*

”Erphindahs,” Kyle repeated aloud, passing Snow’s warning to the group. ”Grey bat-like beasts with blood-red eyes. They have two specific attacks. First, a supersonic high-pitched scream that bleeds a target from every pore, killing them in less than ten seconds. Second, they shoot high-speed blood balls that latch onto your bloodstream and drain your vital fluid.”

Yua’s lips parted slightly, her red eyes flashing with sudden intensity. ”Blood balls? So they have real, high-density blood inside their bodies?”

”They do,” Kyle said, looking at her. ”Which means your blood blades and blood shields will work on them, Yua. But their hides are tough, and they move like lightning in the dark.”

”What about your skills, Kyle?” Elara asked, her voice laced with worry. ”Your black flames?”

”My dark flames will burn them, but they aren’t fast enough to kill them instantly before they can scream,” Kyle explained. ”My shadow abilities have the physical armor-penetration to drop them silently, but I can’t take on an entire swarm alone if we make noise.”

He turned his gaze to Elara. ”And your light spells will do massive, double damage to them because they’re dark-attribute creatures, but your wand magic is naturally bright and loud. If you fire a massive light beam, every Erphindah within ten miles will collapse on us.”

Elara let out a long, shuddering breath, her fingers tightening around her wooden wand. ”So let me get this straight. We have to walk forty-seven unawakened humans through a pitch-black, dead forest in absolute, total silence, while I maintain an atmospheric bubble, and we can only fight with quiet, precise physical strikes?”

”That’s the plan,” Kyle said quietly.

Silence settled over the inner cavern. Outside, the hot wind howled against the red dunes, but inside, the heavy reality of their situation rested on everyone’s shoulders.

Slowly, Yua reached out. Her cool, slender fingers wrapped around Kyle’s hand, locking firmly with his. She looked at him, her dark, tear-stained cheeks from earlier now set in absolute determination. The vulnerability she had shown on the orbital station was still there, soft and real, but beneath it was the unwavering loyalty of a woman who had chosen her path.

”We fought a Council general in a collapsing cave, Kyle,” Yua whispered, her voice warm, carrying a gentle touch of humor that cut right through the grim mood. ”We survived your blood, we survived the space jump, and we made it to this awful, red world. We can handle some oversized bats. Just don’t let go of my hand when we step into those trees.”

Kyle looked down at their joined hands, then up into her crimson eyes. The knot of tension in his chest finally loosened, a genuine, tired smile breaking across his face.

”I’m not letting go, Yua,” Kyle said softly, squeezing her hand tight. ”Not here. Not anywhere.”

Elara looked between the two of them, letting out a soft, dry laugh that turned into a weary sigh as she rested her head back against the stone wall. ”You two are ridiculously dramatic, you know that? But fine. If we’re doing this, I’m taking a three-hour nap right now. Wake me up when it’s time to walk into the quietest nightmare on Planet Kraken.”

*I’ll monitor the cave entrance while you rest, Kyle,* Snow said softly in his mind, her voice filled with gentle, quiet support. *Rest your body. You’ve done well getting everyone this far.*

’Thanks, Snow,’ Kyle thought back, leaning his head back beside Yua as she rested her head on his shoulder. ’Watch the entrance. We move at dawn.’
