Triple X System

The underwater ridge five hundred fathoms above the sanctuary was dead quiet.

Kyle, Yua, and Elara lay low behind a jagged shelf of black basalt. Above them, the ocean water didn’t look like ocean anymore; it looked like liquid glass filled with floating golden dust. Twenty-four massive pillars made of dense, gilded brass—the Solar Anchors—were hammered deep into the seabed, glowing with a harsh, artificial light that made the surrounding sea kelp wither and turn to grey ash.

Kyle pulled his head back down, resting his spine against the cold rock. His dark eyes flickered with a faint black haze as he let out a slow, measured breath.

”Snow,” Kyle whispered, his voice barely carrying past the surrounding water currents. ”Give me the tactical breakdown on those perimeter guards.”

[Scanning forward light-array,] Snow’s quiet voice echoed inside his mind. [Target count: Forty-two standard Clover Spire battle-mages. Eight high-tier field wardens. The mages are positioned in overlapping triangular formations around the central power conduit. Primary defense mechanism: High-density solar shields.]

”Mages,” Kyle muttered, turning his head toward Yua and Elara. ”High mana capacity, terrifying destructive range, but physical fragile if you close the distance.”

”Standard surface doctrine,” Elara agreed quietly. She was crouched low, her hands resting on the hilts of her twin water-daggers. Her pale face was illuminated by the distant golden glare of the anchors. ”Clover Spire mages train exclusively in long-range spell artillery. They cast behind multi-layered light barriers. If a physical hit connects directly with their bodies, their robes might catch some of the force, but their bones break just like anyone else’s.”

”The problem is getting close enough to break those bones,” Yua said, her slender claws tapping rhythmically against her knee. Her crimson eyes tracked the patrolling mages. ”Their light barriers form a continuous circuit. The moment one mage senses a physical threat, the whole line shares defensive mana. You can’t just blitz one without alerting the other forty.”

”That’s where we come in,” Kyle said. ”They outnumber Seraphina’s people in sheer mana output. A standard mer-warrior throwing water spears at those barriers is just wasting breath—the heat from those anchors vaporizes high-pressure streams before they even touch the outer shield. But mages are slow to adjust when their cast-lines are cut from the shadows.”

He looked at Yua. ”You take the left flank. Don’t waste energy on spellwork. Use pure physical speed. Close the gap before they can complete their incantations, crack their barrier nodes with raw kinetic force, and clear a path to the inner circle.”

”Physical violence against soft surface mages?” Yua’s lips curled into a sharp, predatory grin, her fangs gleaming in the dark water. ”My favorite kind of assignment.”

”Elara,” Kyle continued, turning to her. ”You monitor the flow. The moment Yua breaks a barrier node, the surrounding mages are going to panic and try to redirect their mana to patch the gap. You use your new water manipulation—the inverted currents we practiced—to hijack their heat channels. Freeze their spell-formulae from inside their own staff cores.”

Elara nodded, her jaw setting firm. ”I know their casting rhythms. I can disrupt their spell-loops before they complete the third verse.”

”Good,” Kyle said, his hand sliding down to grip the hilt of his shadow blade. ”I’ll handle the central warden. Once his barrier drops, the whole network goes down.”

While Kyle’s team finalized their infiltration route, five hundred yards to the east, a squad of twelve elite mer-warriors from the Wandering Springs was moving through a deep trench trench-line.

Leading them was Commander Vaelen, a veteran mer-soldier covered in thick obsidian scale-armor. He held a long, heavy trident forged from abyssal iron, his dark eyes fixed on the glowing golden base of the easternmost Solar Anchor.

”Keep your profiles low,” Vaelen signaled to his squad using sharp, precise hand motions through the water. ”Sovereign Seraphina’s orders are clear. We draw their perimeter guards toward the trench lip, allowing Kyle’s team to breach the central conduit.”

The mer-warriors moved with fluid, lethal grace. In their natural element, surrounded by dark water, they were nearly silent. Their bodies were built for high-pressure depth, their muscles dense enough to crush stone, and their control over water currents gave them absolute mobility.

To the merfolk, surface mages were dangerous, but predictable. Mages threw heat, light, and explosive fire-lines—elements that lost momentum when forced to push through dense, cold ocean water.

Vaelen raised his hand, halting his squad ten yards below the anchor’s ridge.

”Prepare the high-pressure torrents,” Vaelen whispered, his hand tightening on his trident. ”On my mark, flood the anchor’s cooling vents.”

The twelve mer-warriors raised their weapons, gathering massive volumes of dark sea water around their spear tips. The water condensed into heavy, spinning drills capable of punching straight through reinforced steel plating.

They didn’t notice the strange, silver metallic cables running along the seabed beneath their feet.

High above on the floating command platform of the Iron Shallows, a low-ranking Spire warden stood beside a large, brass control console. He wore heavy silver robes decorated with the lightning-bolt insignia of the Spire’s third division.

He wasn’t looking at the water with his eyes. He was watching a complex, glowing magic circle projected onto his console—a circle that tracked electrical resistance across the seabed.

”Thermal signatures detected in sector four,” the warden reported, his tone entirely devoid of tension. ”Aquatic humanoid signatures. Standard Wandering Springs vanguard composition.”

Beside him, an older mage with a long, braided silver beard leaned over the console, a dark, cold smile touching his lips.

”They still think this is a war of light against water,” the old mage chuckled softly, his gloved fingers adjusting a series of blue crystals set into the console’s rim. ”They think because their scales resist our solar fire, they are safe in the deep trenches.”

”Initiate the conductive array?” the warden asked.

”Deploy it,” the old mage ordered coldly. ”Let the fish remember the fundamental laws of nature. Water is not a shield against the sky... it is a conductor.”

Down in the trench, Vaelen felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up.

It wasn’t heat. It wasn’t light.

The dark sea water around his legs suddenly began to taste sharp—a bitter, metallic tang that made his tongue go numb. Small, microscopic bubbles began to form rapidly on his obsidian armor.

”Vaelen!” one of his younger warriors gasped, clutching his throat. ”The water... my gills are burning!”

”Retreat!” Vaelen roared, his instincts screaming as he pushed off the seabed. ”Up! Get to the dry rocks!”

It was too late.

*ZZZZZZZZT!*

A blinding, jagged fork of bright blue lightning shot out from the base of the Solar Anchor!

It didn’t fire as a single bolt. The moment the electrical energy touched the dense sea water, the high salt content of the ocean turned the entire trench into a massive, instant circuit board!

The blue lightning traveled through the water at terrifying speeds, jumping from wave to wave, expanding into a crackling, fifty-foot web of pure electrical death!

”AHHHHHHH!”

The young mer-warrior directly behind Vaelen let out a blood-curdling scream as the voltage hit his body. The electricity didn’t just shock his skin; it seized his internal nervous system instantly, causing his dense, water-rich muscles to contract so violently that his own bones cracked under the pressure! His control over his internal mana collapsed, and his gills ruptured, spilling dark indigo blood into the crackling, blue-lit water.

”Hold the line! Fortify your cores!” Vaelen screamed, his jaw locking as a stray current arc struck his shoulder.

The electrical shock hit his heart like a heavy hammer, sending a terrifying wave of paralysis through his limbs. The very element that gave the merfolk their absolute dominance—the heavy, mineral-rich ocean water—was now acting as their executioner, carrying the Spire’s lightning directly into every nerve ending, every muscle fiber, and every organ in their bodies.

Within five seconds, eight of the twelve mer-warriors were floating motionless in the water, their bodies twitching uncontrollably as small blue sparks danced across their scales.

”They... they knew...” Vaelen choked out, his vision turning white as he dragged his paralyzed lower body toward the basalt rocks. ”They built the anchors... to electrify the sea...”

From their high vantage point on the basalt shelf, Kyle saw the blinding blue flash illuminate the eastern trench.

”What was that?” Yua hissed, her eyes narrowing as she saw the crackling blue arcs dancing through the water half a mile away.

”Lightning magic,” Elara said, her voice dropping into a horrified whisper. Her hands were trembling as she watched the distant forms of her fellow warriors floating helplessly in the electrified water. ”They... they aren’t using solar light to burn us. They’re using the salt water to transmit high-voltage lightning throughout the lower shelf!”

[Tactical alert,] Snow’s voice cut sharply into Kyle’s mind. [The Clover Council has deployed localized lightning arrays across the entire Iron Shallows perimeter. Standard water-based defense mechanisms used by the Wandering Springs are ninety-eight percent vulnerable to environmental electrical conductivity.]

Kyle’s face turned stone-cold. He reached out, grabbing Elara’s shoulder to keep her anchored behind the rock. ”Stay down! Don’t touch the water channels near those anchors!”

”Kyle... Vaelen’s squad...” Elara choked out, her deep-blue eyes wide with panic. ”They’re paralyzed! If those mages fire a second charge—”

”They won’t,” Kyle growled, his dark eyes flaring with a terrifying, pitch-black haze.

He finally understood the Clover Council’s true strategy. The mages weren’t just standing up there casting spells blindly; they were treating this entire underwater battlefield like a cold, calculated scientific experiment. They knew the physical weaknesses of mages, so they built high-density barriers. They knew the biological weaknesses of the merfolk, so they turned the ocean itself into an electric chair.

They were organized, brutal, and terrifyingly efficient.

”Yua,” Kyle said, his voice dropping into a raspy, lethal whisper. ”New plan. We don’t just break their barrier nodes.”

Yua looked at him, seeing the dark, dangerous shadow-mana beginning to bleed out from his boots, swallowing the light reflecting off the water. Her own crimson eyes flared with absolute bloodlust. ”What are we doing?”

”We get inside their barriers before they can send another shockwave down that trench,” Kyle said, stepping out from behind the basalt rock. ”Mages like to hide behind their elemental advantages. Let’s see how well their lightning works when the shadows are standing right in front of their faces.”

Without waiting another second, Kyle wrapped his entire body in a dense veil of pitch-black shadow mana. Beside him, Yua kicked off the seabed with enough raw physical power to shatter the stone beneath her feet, leaving a streak of red motion in the dark water as they charged straight toward the glowing golden line of the Spire’s mages.
