Triple X System

The forced re-alignment of Kyle’s shadow channels felt like someone was pouring molten lead directly through his nervous system.

He lay coiled on the floor of the nullification vault, his body convulsing in silent agony as black, wispy tendrils of shadow magic bled out from his pores. The anti-mana runes lining the cell walls hummed aggressively, glowing a hot, angry gold as they attempted to absorb his dark essence. But Kyle’s pure, desperate rage—combined with Snow’s ruthless mathematical precision—forced the shadow core to overwrite the cell’s suppression field through sheer, stubborn friction.

*CRACK!*

A web of thin fractures spiderwebbed across the thick glass wall of the confinement door.

”Rerouting complete...” Kyle gasped out, his voice a hoarse, bloody whisper.

He didn’t wait for his core to stabilize. He slammed his shadow-infused shoulder straight into the cracked crystal slab. The door shattered into a hundred jagged pieces, raining heavy fragments onto the turquoise floor of the Azure Haven.

Kyle stumbled out into the empty healing sanctuary. His legs were numb, his vision swam with dark spots, and every breath felt like dragging broken glass through his lungs. But he was moving.

He limped past the deserted coral couches, heading straight for the massive archway that led to the upper trench levels.

The moment he stepped outside the Azure Haven, the smell hit him—not the fresh, mineral-rich mist of the Wandering Spring, but a sickening metallic tang of scorched ozone, burnt flesh, and heavy salt.

The subterranean ocean above him was in complete chaos.

Massive pillars of blinding, golden light pierced through the deep blue waters from above, acting like thermal spears that boiled the seabed on contact. Hundreds of merfolk bodies—brave warriors who had spent centuries swimming through these cold currents—floated motionlessly in the churning water, their vibrant scales blackened and peeled back by high-intensity light magic.

”Damn it...” Kyle muttered, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. ”Just how strong are these mages?”

It didn’t make any sense. The ocean was filled with water—an endless reservoir of life, pressure, and raw ambient power that naturally nourished and empowered the mer-people. In their home environment, a single mer-warrior should have been able to drown dozens of surface dwellers with a flick of a trident.

Yet, the Clover Council’s forces were carving through them like hot steel through silk.

Kyle ducked behind a massive, fallen coral column, keeping his back pressed against the cold rock as he looked up toward the central plaza.

Far above, suspended in the water, were three mid-sized wooden galleons. They weren’t floating on the surface; they were fully submerged, encased in shimmering, airtight domes of translucent gold magic that repelled the crushing ocean pressure easily. From the hulls of these ships, low-tier vanguard mages—clad in snow-white robes trimmed with silver clover leaf badges—were firing long, concentrated beams of crystallized light.

The light didn’t just illuminate the dark water; it superheated the liquid to boiling temperatures in fractions of a second, causing the merfolks’ lungs to rupture the moment they tried to draw mana from their native environment. It was an insidious, calculated slaughter. They weren’t just fighting the mer-people; they were turning the ocean itself into a boiling trap.

”They brought targeted thermal-light arrays...” Kyle realized, his dark eyes narrowing as he watched a group of five white-robed mages easily incinerate a defensive line of ten mermen. ”They came fully prepared to neutralize aquatic magic before they even landed.”

A sudden, terrifying thought struck him like a bucket of ice water.

*The refugees.*

The forty-seven human survivors had been moved to the outer guest chambers near the lower coral barracks—directly in the path of the vanguard’s drop zone.

Ignoring the screaming agony in his chest, Kyle pushed off the coral pillar and blurred forward, using the shadows cast by the falling debris to mask his approach. He kept low, his boots barely touching the blood-stained water floor as he darted through the ruined aqueducts.

As he closed in on the guest chambers, the sound of terrified screaming echoed through the shattered archways.

”P-Please! We aren’t merfolk! We’re humans from the upper domain!” a man’s voice sobbed out—Marcus.

”Silence, filth,” a cold, sneering voice barked back.

Kyle slid around the corner of a ruined marble wall, his hand resting on the hilt of his dormant shadow blade as he took in the scene.

Inside the wide, dome-shaped guest hall, thirty human refugees were huddled in a corner, terrified and trembling. Marcus was standing in front of them, his arms outstretched, trying to shield a mother and her crying young daughter.

Standing before them were four vanguard mages of the Clover Council. They weren’t high-tier archons or lieutenants; their silver cloaks only bore two clover embroidered on their collars—the mark of low-level foot soldiers and spell-scribes. Yet, their expressions were filled with absolute, arrogant disdain.

On the floor near Marcus’s feet lay the pale, lifeless bodies of three merfolk guards who had been assigned to protect the humans. Their chests were charred black, smoke still rising from the water around them.

”Unsanctioned mortals fraternizing with aquatic sub-humans and abyssal mark-bearers,” the lead vanguard mage said, raising a slender, polished wooden wand capped with a yellow crystal. ”By order of the Fifth Seat, all colluding elements are to be purged to maintain spiritual purity.”

”We didn’t collude with anyone! We were captured!” Marcus yelled, his voice cracking with desperation. ”Look at us! We’re defenseless!”

”Defenseless or not, your existence is a flaw in the record,” the mage replied coldly. A ball of blinding, white-hot light began to condense at the tip of his wand, aimed straight at Marcus’s face. ”Burn.”

The mage never got to finish the spell.

A shadow materialized directly behind him—silent, cold, and dripping with absolute lethality.

*SWIFT SLASH!*

Before the other three mages could even blink, a pitch-black blade of condensed shadow energy cut through the lead mage’s neck. Head and body separated cleanly, floating in the water for a split second before blood blossomed into the clear pool like an ink stain.

The remaining three mages gasped, stumbling back in sudden, wild panic. ”W-What?! An ambush—”

Kyle didn’t give them time to draw a breath.

Even with his internal spirit tracks torn, his raw physical combat experience gained from surviving endless life-or-death battles allowed him to move with terrifying efficiency. He stepped inside the second mage’s guard, thrusting his left palm straight into the man’s breastplate.

**Abyssal Impact!**

A localized burst of shadow force imploded inside the mage’s chest, shattering his ribs and launching him backward into the coral wall with a sickening crunch.

The third and fourth mages raised their wands frantically, trying to cast a joint light-shield. ”Light of the Archon, erect—”

Kyle blurred between them. His shadow boots swept the legs out from under the third mage, while his right elbow slammed hard into the fourth mage’s temple. As the third mage fell backward, Kyle reversed his grip on his shadow blade and plunged it downward, pinning the mage to the stone floor. He spun on his heel, grabbing the fourth mage by his throat and slamming his head violently against the pearl floor until the man went completely limp.

In less than six seconds, four vanguard mages lay dead or unconscious.

Kyle stood in the center of the hall, his chest heaving violently, dark blood trickling from the corner of his mouth as the physical strain of using his shadow channels tore at his internal wounds. He wiped his face with the back of his hand, his dark eyes sweeping over the terrified refugees.

”Kyle!” Marcus let out a ragged sob of relief, dropping to his knees. ”You... you came for us!”

”Get everyone up,” Kyle ordered, his voice low, raspy, and commanding. ”Move into the deeper sub-trench tunnels behind the main vault. The anti-mana runes there will hide your heat signatures from their light arrays. Move! Now!”

The refugees didn’t hesitate. They scrambled to their feet, ushering the children and the elderly through the narrow escape hatch at the back of the chamber. Marcus paused at the hatch, looking back at Kyle with deep worry.

”What about you, Kyle? Where are you going?”

”I have to reach the frontlines,” Kyle said, his tone hard and unyielding. ”Yua, Elara, and Seraphina are holding the Serpent’s Maw. If their front line breaks, there won’t be anywhere on this planet left to hide.”

Without waiting for Marcus’s response, Kyle turned and sprinted out of the guest chambers, heading deeper into the main ocean trench.

As he ran through the winding aqueducts, the destruction grew progressively worse.

The beautiful, bioluminescent coral structures that had stood for centuries were now reduced to piles of shattered blue rubble. The water was thick with ash, blood, and the floating remnants of destroyed merfolk weapons. The low-level vanguard mages of the Clover Council were methodical, burning every room, clearing every hallway, and ensuring that no living aquatic entity was left breathing.

Kyle killed three more isolated search parties along the way—two mages inspecting a collapsed watchtower, and a pair of scouts trying to set up a light-beacon near the central reservoir. Each kill was quick, brutal, and silent, but the physical toll on Kyle’s body was stacking rapidly. His shadow channels were flickering, unable to sustain the constant output of dark energy without drawing from his damaged core.

[Warning,] Snow’s voice resonated inside his mind, sharp and tense. [Shadow channel stability has dropped to forty-one percent. Severe internal bleeding detected in your secondary mana vessel. Kyle, if you encounter a mid-tier officer or higher, your current physical output will not be sufficient to guarantee survival.]

’I don’t need a guarantee, Snow,’ Kyle thought back grimly, ducking under a falling archway as a distant explosion rocked the trench walls. ’I just need to reach the Serpent’s Maw.’

He leaped over a shattered fountain, plunging deeper into the dark, narrow gorge that led to the outer reef. The water here was colder, darker, and heavy with crushing pressure—the natural choke point where Seraphina and the others had planned to set their trap.

Suddenly, the ambient light in the gorge changed.

The deep blue darkness of the trench was abruptly cut open by a single, blinding pillar of brilliant yellow light that slammed down directly into the narrow pathway fifty yards ahead of him.

The pressure of the light beam was so intense it physically pushed the ocean water away, creating a dry, thirty-foot cylinder of absolute vacuum in the middle of the submerged canyon.

Kyle skidded to a halt, his boots carving deep grooves into the sea floor as he raised his arm to block the blinding glare.

Standing right in the center of that dry, illuminated cylinder was a single figure.

He didn’t wear the simple white robes of the lower vanguard. He wore heavy, silver-and-gold plate armor etched with complex, glowing runes. Over his shoulders hung a crimson cape adorned with a prominent, three-leaf clover emblem made of pure solid gold. In his right hand, he held a massive, double-edged greatsword that hummed with concentrated, volatile light energy.

The man slowly turned his head toward Kyle. His eyes were a pale, metallic gold, completely devoid of emotion, and his short silver hair floated slightly in the rising heat of his own magic.

”Well, well,” the knight spoke. His voice was deep, echoing through the dry vacuum zone with absolute clarity and cold authority. ”A stray rat crawling out of the dark. You aren’t a mer-creature, nor do you wear the robes of our council.”

The knight raised his light-infused greatsword, pointing the heavy tip directly at Kyle’s chest.

”State your name, abyssal filth,” the knight commanded coldly, his gold aura flaring with terrifying intensity. ”Before I burn your soul from this world.”

Kyle gritted his teeth, his dark eyes locking onto the clover knight as black smoke began to curl off his scorched shadow talon.
