Triple X System

The guards led Kyle down a winding spiral staircase, deeper into the base of the white tower. The fancy floating lanterns faded away, replaced by simple brass torches mounted on damp stone walls.

They stopped at a heavy iron-bound door. One of the guards pulled a brass key from his belt, unlocked it with a heavy *clack*, and pushed it open.

”Get inside,” the guard said, his voice flat under his helmet. ”Food will be brought down shortly. Stay put.”

Kyle didn’t argue. He stumbled into the room, and the heavy door slammed shut behind him. The sound of a heavy latch sliding into place echoed through the small space.

The room was basic—a small cot with a scratchy wool blanket, a wooden washbasin, and a single high window barred with thick iron. It was cold, but it was quiet.

Kyle practically collapsed onto the bed, staring up at the ceiling. The mattress groaned under his weight.

’Snow,’ he thought, closing his eyes. ’Are we safe for now?’

[Safe is a relative term, Host,] Snow’s voice chimed in his head. [The suppression wards on the door are blocking outward mana flow. Nothing is getting in, but we aren’t getting out either. On the bright side, your vitals are stabilizing.]

Kyle looked down at his chest. The amber light beneath his shirt had dimmed back to a faint, steady pulse. The black veins spreading across his skin felt cold to the touch, like frozen needles under his skin.

He pulled his knees up and rested his elbows on them, running a hand through his matted, ash-stained hair. His whole body ached. The adrenaline from the hell dump was finally wearing off, leaving behind a deep, bone-crushing fatigue.

A small wooden flap at the bottom of the door slid open. A tray with a bowl of hot soup, a chunk of dark bread, and a mug of water was pushed through before the flap snapped shut again.

Kyle stared at the food for a second. His stomach growled loudly. He scrambled off the cot, picked up the tray, and sat on the floor with his back against the wall.

He ate quickly, barely tasting the vegetable broth. He needed the energy. Three days wasn’t a long time, but sitting in a cell waiting for a council of powerful witches to decide whether to cure him or execute him felt like a death sentence in slow motion.

A soft knock came from the iron door.

Kyle froze, his spoon halfway to his mouth. ”Who is it?”

”It’s me,” a voice whispered from the other side.

Elara.

Kyle set the bowl down and hurried to the door, pressing his face near the small iron grate. ”Elara? How did you get past the guards?”

”They’re my mother’s guards,” she muttered, her voice muffled through the heavy wood. ”I told them I needed to drop off clean clothes. They aren’t going to tackle the Grand Duchess’s daughter over a pair of pants.”

He heard the faint sound of fabric rustling, and a bundle of folded grey clothes was shoved through the bottom slot.

”How are you holding up?” Kyle asked, crouching down. ”Your ribs?”

”Healed. Mom’s light magic is annoying, but it works fast,” Elara said. She paused, her shadow blocking the light under the door. ”Kyle... about my mom. And the Clover Council.”

”She said I’m an anchor,” Kyle said quietly. ”Is she going to kill me?”

Silence stretched between them for a long moment.

”She’s scared,” Elara finally admitted, her voice dropping lower. ”I’ve never seen her look at anyone the way she looked at the crystal in your chest. The Clover Council doesn’t risk things they can’t control. If they think that thing inside you is going to break out, they won’t try to save you. They’ll just seal the whole chamber with you inside it.”

Kyle swallowed hard. His fist clenched against his knee. ”Then I need to get Yua and get out of here before that meeting.”

”You can’t run from the Spire, Kyle. The barriers are too strong,” Elara said firmly. ”You wouldn’t make it past the courtyard.”

”So what do I do?”

”You let me handle my mom,” Elara said. ”I know how she thinks. She wants leverage, not a fight. Just rest, keep your head down, and don’t do anything stupid with your mana.”

She went quiet for a second, then added softly, ”Yua is stable. They moved her to the upper medical wing. She’s going to be okay.”

Kyle let out a breath he felt like he’d been holding since the hell dump. ”Thanks, Elara.”

”Don’t thank me yet,” she said. ”Get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be worse.”

Her footsteps faded down the stone corridor until the silence returned.

Kyle picked up the clean shirt from the pile, threw off his ruined clothes, and changed. He climbed back onto the cot, pulling the rough blanket up to his chin.

Deep in his chest, the crystal throbbed once—a slow, quiet reminder that time was ticking. Kyle closed his eyes, forcing his mind to go dark before the nightmare could catch up to him.

The morning brought no sun, only a cold, pale light filtering through the barred window of Kyle’s cell.

He sat up on the hard cot, his joints popping like dry twigs. The crystal in his chest was quiet for now, but the skin around it felt tight, like a fresh scar pulling against his muscles.

[Good morning, Kyle,] Snow’s voice chimed. It sounded a bit clearer today, less muffled by the heavy ambient mana of the spire. [Your heart rate is steady, but your core reserves are dangerously low. If you’re forced into a fight today, you won’t last two minutes.]

”I’m not looking for a fight,” Kyle whispered, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. ”I’m looking for a way out.”

[That might be difficult,] Snow replied. [My passive scans pick up at least forty armed guards in the lower ring alone. And the Grand Duchess isn’t playing around. The suppression array outside your door just doubled its output.]

Before Kyle could answer, the heavy iron bolt on his door unlocked with a loud clack.

The door swung open, revealing two silver-armored guards standing beside a tall, thin man in long green robes. His gray hair was pulled back into a tight bun, and his eyes were cold and analytical behind small glass spectacles.

”Get up,” the man said, holding a wooden clipboard. ”The Grand Duchess requires your presence at the processing courtyard.”

Kyle stood slowly. ”What about Yua?”

”She remains in the infirmary,” the green-robed clerk replied without looking up from his parchment. ”Move.”

Kyle fell in line between the two guards. They marched him down the damp stone corridors, up the spiral staircase, and out into a massive, open-air courtyard he hadn’t seen the night before.
