F1: The Speed Legend

When Cliffton Collins accepted the proposal, he knew it was a complex assignment. Yet at the same time, it was remarkably straightforward. The reason for both was identical:

He was styling a Formula 1 driver.

The easy part was that professional athletes weren’t fashion insiders. True cultural icons like David Beckham came along once a decade. You only had to look at Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo: undisputed superstars on the pitch, but their body proportions, physical posture, and personal style had very little to do with high fashion. Drivers were much the same. Styling them didn’t require overthinking fashion trends; it just needed to fit well.

That exact detail was what made it tricky. Their physical proportions rarely matched standard runway samples. Off-the-rack designer pieces usually sat awkwardly on their frames. Either their thighs were too thick, their forearms too heavy, or their shoulders too wide. High fashion relied on elongated, balanced proportions, which almost no professional athlete naturally possessed.

Collins knew F1 drivers weren’t built like NASCAR drivers, but if he remembered correctly, grand prix drivers tended to be relatively short, with thick necks that disrupted the balance between the head and shoulders. They also had to avoid heavy upper-body weight training to keep their physical mass within strict aerodynamic limits.

It wasn’t an insult; it was just a physical reality. That was the specific body composition demanded by modern grand prix racing.

It was just miles away from high fashion.

Lewis Hamilton frequently appeared at fashion galas, earning praise from style editors, but true industry insiders knew the reality:

It was mutual commercial promotion. Setting aside Hamilton’s height of 174 centimeters, his personal style choices were open to debate.

Hamilton was undeniably persistent in trying new looks, but whether he had established a coherent personal style was another matter entirely.

If you privately ranked fashion icons across professional sports, Hamilton didn’t make the top list.

Honestly, even David Beckham’s image had been meticulously crafted by Victoria Beckham. Left to his own devices, his baseline taste was remarkably ordinary.

More importantly, even when a top stylist poured effort into building a look for an athlete, the fashion industry rarely validated it. Without the specific poise and physical presence to carry the garment, the effort felt like performing for a blind audience. A complete waste of energy.

Because of those realities, Collins had heard this specific brief had bounced around Hollywood for weeks. Almost every top stylist in town had passed on it.

A few were intrigued, but learning there was only a single week to prepare wiped out any remaining interest.

Even with the brief coming directly from LVMH, backed quietly by Frédéric Arnault while F1 and Netflix were pushing the sport’s global reach, it looked like a major opportunity on paper. But high visibility meant high risk; one misstep could damage a stylist’s reputation.

The elite Hollywood stylists preferred to wait and watch, refusing to break the deadlock.

Privately, the fashion circle was skeptical of LVMH’s direction:

High fashion and motorsport? The overlap felt forced.

Hamilton was the obvious case study. While the industry recognized his presence, almost no one taken his personal style seriously as a fashion statement.

Collins admitted that ninety percent of his reason for accepting the job was Arnault. He simply wanted to build a direct relationship with LVMH. The remaining ten percent was a desire for a new creative challenge, proving he could manage non-traditional body types across different industries.

Deep down, Collins had prepared himself for a difficult session.

Yet standing face-to-face with the driver now, Collins realized something:

Prejudice had blinded him.

The fashion industry knew nothing about racing. Rigid stereotypes filled their minds, making every assumption seem obvious, so no one bothered to look closer at the paddock. Stylists either skimmed a few social media photos or projected deep-seated biases onto the sport, missing the physical reality underneath.

Perhaps this was a genuine opportunity after all, not because of LVMH, but because of the young man standing in front of him.

Collins felt a surge of creative energy.

Stepping aside with a polite gesture, Collins offered a light smile. ”Welcome to my chocolate factory.”

Inside, an ivory-white circular space opened up like a modern space capsule: clean, minimal, bathed in soft, diffused light. Compared to the vintage exterior of the building, the interior felt futuristic, yet entirely refined. It avoided flashy sci-fi tropes, keeping the architecture simple and focused on a single circular dressing room at the absolute center of the room.

The surrounding curtains could draw back a full three hundred and sixty degrees, exposing a white fitting platform at the center. Outside the curtain line, organized garment racks extended in precise tiers:

Tops and trousers were strictly separated. Outerwear held its own dedicated zone. T-shirts and button-downs were split; tailored trousers sat apart from denim; short jackets were separated from long coats.

Finally, every section was arranged by shade, transitioning smoothly from light to dark.

It was an impressive, extensive collection that managed to feel meticulously organized. It was an entirely different world.

Before Kai arrived in Los Angeles, Collins had drafted a preliminary concept:

On Wednesday, Kai was scheduled to attend the red carpet premiere of Spider-Man: Far From Home at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles. It was undeniably one of the biggest summer blockbusters of the year, produced by Marvel Studios under Disney. The promotional campaign had been building for twelve months, guaranteeing a star-studded turnout with the world’s media locked onto the event.

Standing out in an environment like that was no easy task.

Collins had a few ideas, but he needed Kai to try them on one by one.

Truthfully, Collins knew almost nothing about Kai. His information came entirely from press clips and online data. But personal style was an intangible quality of presence and posture; you could only measure it in person. They had to start from baseline zero.

It was a process of testing ideas against reality to find the perfect match.

Kai approached the session without any mental burden. He figured trying on a few outfits was simple enough, a minor task compared to the exhausting multi-day simulator sessions back at Maranello. This felt like a vacation. A red carpet was just a social gathering, completely devoid of the sharp political battles of the F1 paddock. He kept a relaxed, easy mindset.

Yet less than thirty minutes in, Kai regretted everything. He would have gladly flown back to Maranello to run simulator laps instead.

Modeling had its own physical strain. In thirty minutes, he had only fitted four looks. Every change required pin adjustments, detail tweaks, and stepping onto the platform to display different angles and layering options. Kai felt like a mannequin being moved around, forced to hold motionless poses until his back ached and his body turned stiff. The feeling of being trapped in slow motion grew heavier, making the simple acts of dressing and undressing feel completely mechanical.

As the session progressed, he picked up the routine and moved a bit faster, but after a full hour, he had only cleared eleven outfits. It felt more draining than driving an entire Grand Prix distance.

His muscles felt locked up, his shoulders and back stiff. He felt like a wooden puppet pinned into position, rigidly bound by the fitting process.

Even the wet race at Singapore last year hadn’t left him feeling this awkward.

Quiet rustling and hushed whispers echoed across the room. The low, muffled murmurs were as annoying as mice scratching behind drywall.

Kai turned his head with a thoroughly flat expression. Lorenzo and Nicolas instantly shifted their gazes, one staring at the clothing racks while the other looked up at the ceiling, pretending to be deeply fascinated by the architecture.

Terrible acting.

Kai ignored the pair and let the tailor continue pinning the fabric, keeping his body rigid. The assistant was adjusting the seam lines to tighten the silhouette and ensure an exact fit. If he moved even a millimeter, a pin would bite directly into his skin.

The quiet lasted less than three seconds before another round of hushed giggles broke out behind him.

Kai finally snapped, offering a dry remark. ”Are we hosting mice under the floorboards here, or is there a pigeon convention I wasn’t told about?”

The dry delivery completely broke their composure, sending Lorenzo and Nicolas into fits of laughter.

Nicolas tried to recover his professional tone. ”No, it’s nothing. Truly. It’s just... Kai, we have never seen you look this thoroughly out of your element.”

So there were things the young driver wasn’t good at after all.

”Doesn’t Ferrari run fitting sessions and photo updates for team gear every season?” Nicolas asked, trying to hold his composure. But seeing Kai standing stiffly like a duck attempting a turn, he couldn’t stop laughing.

This was a rare visual. He pulled out his phone to record a quick video clip.

Kai was about to explain that Ferrari fitting sessions were far simpler—the team already held his precise physical measurements, and fitting team kit was about checking sizing, not evaluating high fashion. But Nicolas clearly didn’t care about the explanation.

Turning his head rigidly, Kai caught Nicolas holding his phone up to record. Kai raised two fingers in a flat peace sign, keeping his expression entirely blank, staring down the camera lens with a cold, lifeless gaze.

The comic effect was immediate.

Nicolas and Lorenzo completely lost it, doubled over in laughter. Even Collins couldn’t hide a wide grin.

Kai pulled his gaze back to Collins, a slight smile finally appearing. ”If you want to laugh, go ahead. Holding it in isn’t healthy, and we still need you to finish the fitting today. If your chest explodes on the rug, the dry cleaning bill for these garments is going to be absurd.”

Collins broke out laughing as well.

Despite the fatigue, the fitting was yielding clear results. Moving from an open catalogue to a focused selection, Collins had isolated three distinct directions.

Option One: A head-to-toe black Givenchy suit.

A structured black jacket paired with a black shirt. The high mandarin collar and subtle waistline emphasized Kai’s height and proportions, while the collarless shirt design projected a sharp, youthful edge. It stepped away from the typical polished image of a grand prix driver, unlocking a darker, more dramatic aesthetic.

Youthful, with a rebellious edge, but far more intense.

Option Two: A navy blue Louis Vuitton double-breasted suit.

Wide peak lapels paired with a classic retro cut, rendered in a modern, refined tone. It elevated Kai’s natural image, projecting an effortless, tailored elegance that separated him from the typical professional athlete, fitting seamlessly into a high-end Hollywood setting.

It carried the classic charm of golden-era cinema stars.

What satisfied Collins was Kai’s physical baseline. His height and frame carried designer cuts effortlessly, displaying natural model proportions.

It certainly wasn’t a subtle dig at any specific rival on the grid.

Somewhere in Europe, Hamilton sneezed.

Lorenzo preferred the first option. That was the Kai he recognized, matching the sharp, uncompromising demeanor from his early street racing days in Rome.

Nicolas favored the second option. ”It aligns with the corporate brand image we want to project. This is the visual baseline we need to build. The general public will respond to it, not just racing fans. We need to capture attention beyond motorsport, and Hollywood is the ideal starting point.”

Intriguingly, Collins’ personal favorite was the third option:

A black button-down paired with dark denim, a cropped black leather jacket, and structured boots. A clean, sharp motorcycle rider aesthetic.

On one hand, it matched the natural intensity of a racer.

On the other hand, it dismantled both the traditional athlete stereotype and the standard Hollywood red carpet expectations.

Even Collins hadn’t anticipated how striking the combination would look. The visual impact far exceeded his expectations.

”Listen, male styling on Hollywood red carpets is completely repetitive,” Collins explained. ”It’s always black or white ties. On the rare occasion someone wears navy, the media treats it like a ground-breaking event.”

”No one pays attention to what men wear on the red carpet. Award shows, premieres, it’s always the same. No one takes a genuine risk.”

”I’m not suggesting you walk out underdressed or show up in a casual t-shirt and sandals; that’s not rebellious, just lazy. The issue is that everything is trapped inside a rigid corporate frame. There’s zero imagination, especially with Disney. When I took this job, I sent a formal inquiry to Disney’s publicity team asking for their dress code guidelines.”

”Disney sent back a document. A document! Thirty pages detailing restrictions.”

”It’s completely dull.”

Kai let out a genuine laugh.

Collins spread his hands. Marvel films had dominated global box offices for years, but audience fatigue was settling in. The formulaic superhero narrative was losing its spark, driven by factory-line studio production that lacked creative risk.

”I don’t need to step onto the carpet at the Chinese Theatre to predict how the event will look. Zendaya will dominate the fashion coverage, and every style column will focus on her. Law Roach takes real creative risks as her stylist, but she’ll be the only highlight.”

”Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal will show up in standard tailored suits.”

”Tom will wear classic black. Jake might pick brown to signal a subtle personality choice, but it’s still a safe, conservative option. A bold choice is dark brown; a cautious choice is beige. Samuel L. Jackson might skip the tie for a t-shirt, but no one will blink.”

”Boring. Completely boring.”

”For them, playing it safe doesn’t hurt, because the public is focused on Spider-Man. What the actors wear to a press screening is secondary.”

”But for us, the objective is entirely different, isn’t it?”

Lorenzo glanced at Nicolas. Was Collins implying something deeper? Had the stylist mapped out their underlying strategy?

Nicolas remained seated, looking completely unbothered.

Lorenzo relaxed slightly. He was overthinking it; Collins simply assumed Kai was in Los Angeles to build an international brand image.

”If we take an extreme risk and overshadow the lead cast, Disney won’t be pleased, and critics will accuse us of hijacking the event. Hollywood would close its doors to us. But if we play it too safe, we blend into the background, and the appearance achieves nothing.”

Collins spread his hands, oblivious to Lorenzo’s subtle checks. His creative drive was fully engaged as he turned back to Kai, his eyes bright.

He wasn’t hiding his ambitions: he wanted to deliver a striking, unexpected statement.

Without that ambition, he wouldn’t have accepted the assignment in the first place.

Collins looked directly into Kai’s eyes.

Usually, when working with professional athletes, stylists coordinated through managers or agency reps. Athletes focused their talents on the field or track, naturally relying on their inner team to manage unfamiliar industries.

Like an agent.

Yet Collins found himself addressing Kai directly, bypassing the management without realizing it.

”If Lewis Hamilton wanted to attend a film premiere, he could secure an invitation tomorrow. But he doesn’t. Why?”

”Because Hollywood doesn’t care about Formula 1.”

Kai winced slightly. ”Ouch. I’d clutch my chest in dramatic pain, but my arms are currently pinned into position.”

Collins broke out into a smile.

”No offense intended,” Collins added.

”It applies to all professional sports. You see Hollywood stars sitting courtside at Lakers games all the time, but if LeBron James attends a movie premiere, the entertainment press treats him as a secondary guest.”

Kai smiled dryly. ”LeBron James is a massive global icon. Right.”

The tone was dry and playful.

”Which brings me to my point,” Collins continued, holding back another laugh.

”Kai arriving in a sharp, tailored motorcycle jacket breaks the standard red carpet frame without looking underdressed. It gives Disney no reason to complain while commanding immediate visual focus. We need an unconventional strategy.”

Collins’ confidence was rooted in how Kai carried the look.

As a stylist, Collins genuinely loved the third ensemble on the driver.

Tall, well-proportioned, projecting an effortless, natural edge. The clean, composed posture created a striking contrast against the aggressive leather jacket, giving the look a rebellious, sharp personality.

On a predictable red carpet, it would stand out instantly.

Imagining Kai stepping out in the leather cut, breaking standard red carpet expectations, Collins felt a surge of creative excitement.

That professional satisfaction was hard to put into words.

”So we lock in the third option?” Lorenzo asked. ”I think it suits him well. Back when he was street racing, that was pretty much his natural style.”

”What brand is it? Armani?”

The moment Lorenzo spoke, Kai burst out laughing. ”Armani? Lorenzo, are you incapable of hiding your Italian roots for even five minutes?”

”If you said Alexander McQueen, maybe. Armani? Come on.”

Seeing Kai laughing, Lorenzo rolled his eyes. ”You have to admit Italian fashion leads the world, just like our food.”

The room went quiet.

Lorenzo noticed Kai and Nicolas exchanging a subtle look. Before he could argue his point, Collins spoke up with a look of mild awkwardness.

”That’s the issue...”

”It isn’t an LVMH brand.”

The silence in the room became absolute.

Kai’s appearance at the Spider-Man: Far From Home premiere was arranged through LVMH’s corporate allocation. Without LVMH, the Los Angeles trip wouldn’t be happening. Showing up in an unaligned brand’s garment was a major conflict.

Was that a smart move?

It was a quick way to get blacklisted by LVMH.

Nicolas looked exasperated. ”Cliffton, why did you even present that option then?”

Collins looked equally awkward. ”I didn’t expect it to look this striking on him.”

Nicolas was about to push the point, but Kai’s voice cut in calmly. ”If we are already breaking standard expectations, why not take it one step further?”

Every eye turned to Kai.

”Why not set the corporate sponsorships aside and attend the premiere entirely as an independent athlete? Instead of turning this into a rigid commercial appearance under the LVMH banner—where every press drop feels scripted and artificial—I step onto the carpet on my own terms. A young driver entering an entirely new space: Hollywood, a blockbuster premiere, a red carpet. A genuine new challenge.”

”Break the stereotype entirely. Drop the corporate obligations and the artificial expectations along with them.”

The idea left the room speechless.

Nicolas, Lorenzo, and Collins stared at him.

It sounded like an incredibly naive proposal, almost foolish. Walking onto a major red carpet without corporate backing meant losing guaranteed media push. In 2019, organic presence wasn’t enough; strategic promotion was standard practice.

Nicolas was surprised. Kai usually understood commercial dynamics well. Was Hollywood clouding his judgment? How should he explain the reality?

Before he could speak, Kai added casually, ”Of course, I’ll be wearing the TAG Heuer watch a close friend gifted me privately.”

Wait, what?

Before anyone could process the remark, applause echoed from the doorway. Everyone turned to see Frédéric Arnault standing there in a tailored suit.

Kai’s eyes filled with a subtle smile. ”When did you arrive?”

Arnault smiled. ”Did you spot me coming in and construct that argument on the spot?”

Kai put on an innocent look. ”Not at all. I had no idea you were standing there.”

Arnault let out a genuine laugh. ”I think it’s a brilliant approach.”

Nicolas stood up immediately. ”Mr. Arnault!”

LVMH was a global powerhouse, and every corporate interaction required careful management. A single misstep could alter an entire partnership.

Arnault glanced at Nicolas before turning back to Kai. ”Corporate reps often overthink these details, losing their authenticity and their sense of humor in the process. It’s refreshing.”

Kai offered a light shrug. ”That’s what happens when you deal with LVMH. The name carries so much weight that people stumble over their words just saying it.”

Arnault chuckled. ”In all seriousness, we haven’t signed a formal brand ambassador contract with you yet. Showing up under an explicit LVMH label could create internal compliance questions for our marketing team. But attending via our private allocation is an established fact. Frame it as an appearance supported by a personal friend, and it feels far more authentic.”

”Wearing our brand has its commercial perks, but going independent carries its own unique charm. I trust your judgment.”

”And I appreciate you remembering the watch.”

Kai held up his hands. ”I considered wearing my racing helmet, but I don’t think I can pull off the Daft Punk look.”

The dry joke brought a wave of laughter across the room. Arnault laughed openly, while Lorenzo shook his head with a quiet smile.

Kai had made the remark casually, but he noticed Collins’ eyes light up as if a new idea had struck him.

Kai quickly raised a hand, drawing a firm line. ”Forget whatever you’re thinking. My face is my primary asset here. You understand visual appeal, right?”

Collins’ shoulders dropped in visible disappointment.

Yet that casual banter sparked an idea in Kai’s mind. His eyes brightened as a new concept took shape. ”If we are already throwing out the rulebook, why not take it another step further?”

Collins straightened up, his creative interest reignited. ”What do you have in mind?”
