F1: The Speed Legend

Cheering, shouting, light teasing, and mutual banter filled the air.

Despite the punishing fatigue and the brutal reality of being cooped up inside the factory loops until they felt like worn-out components, the relief and high energy radiating from the engineering group were entirely genuine. The stagnant atmosphere in the base finally dissolved, and technicians stood up across their terminals to stretch after the final run.

”Our Kai is officially tracking toward Hollywood stardom!” someone shouted from the back.

”Bring back an autograph from Monica Bellucci!”

”Taylor Swift, let’s go!”

”Paul, I never realized you were into that specific pop princess profile. What a surprise!”

The bay erupted into fresh laughter, accompanied by a wave of sharp whistles that grew increasingly loud.

Amidst the noise, a senior technician raised his voice over the console. ”Kai, what about Jackie Chan? He’s my absolute cinematic hero. If you manage a meeting with him, I’d trade a full calendar year of my life for that signature.”

The room paused for a fraction of a second before breaking into absolute hysterics, the mechanics leaning over their desks in amusement.

Watching the scene unfold, Lorenzo felt a wave of professional satisfaction.

He had never anticipated witnessing a dynamic like this inside Maranello. The traditionally proud, insular technical department—historic figures who spent decades resting on Ferrari’s heritage while ignoring driver feedback—had completely integrated with their pilot. They had dropped their engineering biases and structural friction to become absolute partners in the trenches.

At this moment, Lorenzo fully understood why Kai had insisted on completing every remaining second of the simulator cycle.

Simone Resta stepped forward from the diagnostic monitors. He was fully aware that Kai’s trip to Los Angeles wasn’t a standard summer holiday, and that the driver had zero interest in navigating the social circles of Hollywood entertainment. Yet for the survival of the group, Kai hadn’t hesitated to anchor the deception.

Resta attempted to find the correct words, but standing before the young driver, his engineering precision failed him. His mind went completely blank.

Enrico Cardile followed closely behind, evaluating the young athlete standing under the bay lights. Despite executing a brutal, around-the-clock simulator schedule for six consecutive days, Kai showed zero physical degradation. His posture remained perfectly straight, his eyes sharp as a cold blade.

Taking a slow breath, Cardile spoke. ”The technical department will manage the backend variables from this point forward. Ensure you check the encrypted network daily. Once you’ve parsed the files, delete the data blocks completely. If you spot a variance in the models, contact us via the private line. Maintain the update schedule.”

”We require—”

Cardile paused, structuring the admission carefully. ”We require your direct input on the calibration. Charles is still exceptionally young, and he lacks the deep macro-experience needed to direct the remapping independently.”

Resta looked over, completely confused by the phrasing. ”Charles is exactly two years older than Kai.”

Cardile stared.

Resta continued. ”And they entered the top tier during the exact same grid cycle.”

”If you don’t possess a technical note to contribute, Simone, feel free to maintain absolute silence,” Cardile snapped.

Kai and Lorenzo were already laughing quietly, though Kai managed to steady his expression to address the engineers. ”I will monitor the telemetry logs daily.”

”We should coordinate a secure video link to summarize the analytical data at fixed intervals.”

”Relax, everyone. It’s not like I’m heading to Ibiza to lose myself in club bookings and endless party circuits. I won’t forget the department, Simone and...”

Kai paused intentionally, looking toward Cardile as if his memory had suddenly dropped the technical director’s name, offering a polite, quizzical look.

Cardile rolled his eyes. ”Ha, ha. Outstanding humor.”

Resta leaned in, whispering helpfully in a low voice, ”Enrico.”

Cardile looked deeply defeated.

Kai let out a bright laugh, his mood entirely elevated.

Resta, still slightly blind to the personal dynamics between Cardile and the driver, looked between them before focusing back on the immediate timeline.

Hesitating briefly, Resta stepped forward and gave Kai a solid embrace, patting the driver’s back firmly. ”Thank you.”

The engineering lead lacked the vocabulary to articulate the deep professional pressure they had survived, condensing a week of structural stress into a single, authentic gesture of appreciation.

Kai blinked, his smile returning. ”This is simply the opening sector. The real challenge initialized today. I intend to deliver exactly what the team requires to sustain the fight. We still have two world championship titles to capture, and everyone is going to face an intense crunch. The summer break holiday time you are sacrificing now will be fully offset by performance bonuses down the line.”

The response was immediate, a massive roar of approval filling the terminal bay.

Kai raised his hands, laughing. ”Don’t look at me for the check. My personal capital isn’t that substantial. We need to direct our commercial targeting toward the absolute wealthiest account on this continent.”

He pointed a finger directly toward the executive offices upstairs.

The engineers caught the intent instantly, laughing uproariously as the energy peaked across the floor.

This time, Lorenzo didn’t push the schedule. He waited patiently by the exit, deeply aware that this compliance crisis carried immense institutional weight. Whatever corporate storm arrived during the break, Kai had successfully leveraged the threat to completely unite Maranello’s engineering core.

That achievement was a massive asset.

Kai didn’t prolong the departure, turning to exit the facility with his manager.

As they cleared the secure perimeter, Kai maintained his professional discipline, meeting the demands of the Tifosi gathered outside the gates. He handled the selfies, signed the merchandise, and shook hands without a single sign of fatigue. After a minor delay, Lorenzo pulled the red F8 Tributo onto the main road, slowly leaving the facility behind.

Clearing the dense crowd, Lorenzo wiped the sweat from his forehead. ”Under normal conditions I wouldn’t push back, but our timeline is tight today. We shouldn’t have paused for the signatures. The fans would have understood the rush.”

Even with the official factory shutdown hours away, the perimeter of Maranello remained completely saturated with fans, the sea of red caps extending down the avenue.

Kai’s current cultural gravity within the region was undeniable. Inside Maranello, his authority was absolute.

”If the fans discover I bypassed their support purely to catch a flight to Los Angeles for a commercial red carpet, the public support would dissolve instantly. The last variable we need right now is the Tifosi turning hostile,” Kai noted calmly. ”Furthermore, Mercedes and Red Bull are actively tracking our movements. We cannot present an artificial departure pattern.”

Lorenzo paused. ”Do you genuinely believe their scouts are monitoring our residential routes? We’ve kept the security protocols airtight. This feels like analytical paranoia.”

Kai didn’t respond. ”Kai?” Lorenzo asked, glancing toward the rearview mirror.

He checked the passenger seat.

The young driver had already dropped into deep sleep, his head resting against the headrest. His steady breathing and relaxed posture proved he could locate absolute comfort inside the tight cabin, completely undisturbed by the engine note.

Lorenzo let out a quiet laugh.

Moments earlier, Kai had projected an image of total vitality, managing the engineers inside the base and interacting with the public outside without showing a single hint of exhaustion. Yet within thirty seconds of the door closing, his physical limits had caught up with him, his body completely shutting down.

It was entirely logical. The operational intensity of the last week was unprecedented. Kai had processed a month’s worth of simulator cycles within six days, driving his physical endurance to the limit purely through raw willpower to ensure Wolff and Horner detected zero vulnerability.

Taking a slow breath, Lorenzo remained quiet. He adjusted the climate control to a comfortable resting temperature, driving the vehicle toward Milan in absolute silence.

Before reaching Milan International Airport, Lorenzo woke the driver. Kai cleared his eyes, noticing the distinct redness from the lack of sleep. He put on his dark sunglasses, adjusted his collar, and proceeded through the secure VIP corridor into the terminal without leaving a single trace for the media.

Despite the standard noise of reporters and casual travelers in the terminal, Kai maintained absolute professional decorum until he reached his seat on the aircraft. Before the engines even spooled for takeoff, he was completely out cold again.

He didn’t wake up once during the transit.

The overhead speakers crackled to life inside the terminal. ”Final boarding call for flight VS024 to London Heathrow... Passengers for American Airlines flight AA010 to New York JFK, your aircraft is preparing for immediate departure...”

The constant wash of public announcements echoed through the vast terminal architecture. The heavy flow of travelers generated a steady hum of movement across the concourse, separate cultures, national backgrounds, and commercial professionals intersecting briefly before moving toward their final destinations.

Lorenzo turned to evaluate Kai, who was still navigating a haze of deep jet lag. Following an 11-hour transoceanic crossing, the driver had remained entirely asleep, skipping the cabin service completely. Yet his physical systems hadn’t fully recovered. Though he was standing upright on the terminal floor, his eyes looked ready to close at any second, leaving Lorenzo shaking his head in mild disbelief.

Kai’s stomach let out a distinct growl. Having gone nearly fifteen hours without food, his body was hitting its absolute caloric limit, yet his eyes refused to cooperate.

The contrast was deeply amusing.

Initially, Lorenzo had been concerned that their arrival in Los Angeles would spark an immediate media crush, but as they cleared customs, he realized his anxiety was entirely unfounded.

The arrivals hall was completely quiet.

First variable: this was Los Angeles, the absolute heart of the global entertainment infrastructure. The terminal saw a continuous flow of international superstars daily; the local community and airport staff were entirely desensitized to fame, meaning zero paparazzi were waiting by the exit.

Second variable: within the North American market, mainstream sports coverage was dominated by football and baseball, with basketball holding the secondary tier. Global motorsport remained a minor specialty interest, meaning very few casual travelers at LAX could identify an F1 driver on sight.

The atmosphere was perfectly peaceful.

The surrounding travelers remained entirely focused on their own logistical schedules, leaving Kai to enjoy a rare moment of complete public anonymity.

Lorenzo suddenly understood why the commercial directors of Formula 1 were so desperate to capture the Asian and North American markets. The Asian sector represented immense untapped consumer potential, while the North American sports landscape was a mature, highly lucrative ecosystem with massive commercial partnerships waiting to be accessed by elite racing franchises.

Concurrently, a separate strategic concern entered Lorenzo’s mind.

What if the general public failed to identify Kai entirely during the premiere?

Or worse, what if the entertainment press recognized his status as the reigning world champion but treated his presence with complete commercial indifference?

The domestic market possessed its own established racing traditions, with NASCAR and the Indy 500 commanding the absolute share of domestic motorsport interest. Within that framework, a racing icon carried an entirely separate cultural definition. Even a superstar like Hamilton possessed restricted mainstream reach across the states; a sophomore driver with less history would face an uphill battle.

Their trip to Los Angeles wasn’t just a lifestyle play; they were executing a critical piece of team defense. If the red-carpet appearance failed to generate a massive digital footprint, the entire misdirection would collapse.

”Nicolas!” Lorenzo called out, spotting Nicolas Todt navigating through the terminal crowd toward them.

The entire layout was highly complex and carried significant execution risk. More importantly, the timeline had been pulled forward so abruptly that the agent had been left with very little preparation time to structure the commercial links.

Despite the crunch, Todt had arrived in California early to clear the operational paths and establish their baseline presence.

Although it was past eleven at night when the flight landed, the agent looked completely energized, as if his business day was just initializing.

Giving Lorenzo a firm pat on the shoulder, Todt smiled. ”Transit went cleanly?”

Lorenzo glanced at the half-awake driver beside him. ”He slept through the entire flight envelope.”

Todt didn’t blink. ”Perfect. I’ve been monitoring the digital updates across Twitter and Instagram. Kai’s post-race dinner layout worked flawlessly; the opposition hasn’t signaled a single suspicion. He needs his physical reserves fully charged because our commercial calendar in the states is completely packed. Let’s maximize this window.”

Seeing the agent’s absolute confidence, Lorenzo felt his baseline anxiety ease slightly, preparing to review the upcoming schedule.

”I need food,” Kai’s voice cut in from behind, accompanied by a massive stretch and a yawn, his systems finally waking up.

Todt snapped his fingers. ”Perfect timing. I anticipated your caloric deficit.”

Kai cleared his vision. ”Outstanding management, Nicolas. I assume we have priority reservations mapped out? I’m expecting a high-end menu.”

”Absolutely,” Todt replied with a wide grin. ”The quality is guaranteed.”

Twenty-three minutes later, Kai stood staring at the agent with an expression of complete disbelief.

Looking at the drive-thru lane they had pulled into, backed by the massive red-and-yellow neon sign reading In-N-Out, Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.

”Fast food?” Kai asked, staring at the terminal menu. ”Your concept of an elite menu is a standard drive-thru? I am fully aware the domestic culinary landscape is an absolute wilderness, but a basic burger?”

Todt turned around from the front seat, his expression completely serious. ”This isn’t a standard generic franchise, Kai. This is a defining cultural institution of the West Coast. Their operations are strictly restricted to California to ensure total quality control over their distribution lines; it’s a regional specialty.”

”Across the wider continent, it commands an absolute cult following, recognized by food critics as a definitive classic. Every international traveler landing in Los Angeles handles this as a mandatory stop.”

Noticing the absolute skepticism on the driver’s face, Todt accelerated his explanation.

”Ang Lee! The director! The absolute pride of global cinema!”

”When he captured his second Academy Award for Life of Pi, a specific image went viral across global media: he was holding the gold Oscar statuette in one hand while eating a burger with the other. This is that exact burger.”

”In-N-Out!”

”Trust me, Kai. You need to parse the flavor profile on merit.”

Kai looked at his agent, shaking his head in mild amusement. ”Nicolas, you are a native Frenchman. Your country’s culinary heritage is one of the few legacy systems that sits at parity with traditional Chinese cuisine. How did you let your standards drop this far?”

Lorenzo interjected. ”Excuse me. As an Italian, I take offense to that classification. Our regional kitchens—”

Before the manager could complete the thought, Kai cut him off. ”But I recognize we are operating in a culinary desert, much like Italy, so I will evaluate the option under protest. At least you didn’t attempt to order a domestic pizza, otherwise Lorenzo’s systems would have suffered an immediate failure.”

Lorenzo rolled his eyes. ”Are you speaking from experience?”

As they spoke, the car pulled up to the ordering window. Despite the midnight hour, the drive-thru lane was packed with a long queue of vehicles, confirming the brand’s immense local popularity.

Perhaps the option carried actual merit.

Furthermore, Kai’s physical systems were genuinely demanding fuel, making the menu look increasingly viable. He lowered the window to review the selections.

”Welcome to In-N-Out, how can I help you tonight?” the headset operator broadcasted.

”What is the signature recommendation on the menu?” Kai asked.

The response from the physical window cut through the intercom. ”Oh my god, you’re Kai!”

Kai raised his eyes, momentarily startled.

The young woman working the window was staring back with an expression of complete shock, her mouth open. Kai offered a clean, natural smile. ”I’m not entirely dialed into the local climate variables, but you might want to watch the window clearance before a fly gets in.”

The girl let out a sudden scream, turning back toward the kitchen staff. ”It’s actually Kai!”

A sudden commotion cut through the background of the kitchen. A few voices asked for clarification, while three other employees moved forward to look out the window. The small service opening transformed into a crowded frame of faces evaluating the car’s interior.

The atmosphere turned instantly loud and animated.

The midnight air was immediately charged, the space around the car filling with energy.

A senior kitchen staff member used her physical presence to clear a spot at the counter, dominating the window ledge, while the initial order taker remained squeezed into the corner, her eyes locked onto the driver. The senior employee initialized the conversation.

”A racing driver? Are you serious?”

”He looks like the lead actor from The Notebook. He’s thin as a rail; if you put him under proper load he looks ready to snap in half. How does a profile like that handle a modern race car?”

”Hey handsome, are you genuinely an elite driver? Julia has been talking about your stats since last winter as if you were Captain America. What brings you to Los Angeles anyway? Aren’t you supposed to be out racing in the Sahara or the Amazon jungle?”

The rapid delivery was perfectly timed.

A smile appeared in Kai’s eyes. ”You do realize that before the super-soldier serum, Captain America was a lightweight applicant facing an immediate medical rejection, right?”

”And Tony Stark without his mechanical suit is simply an aging billionaire facing a permanent cardiac issue.”

His responses were perfectly level, entirely relaxed as he met their gaze.

He offered a light sigh. ”I had no idea the local demographic preferred those specific archetypes.”

The kitchen staff broke into immediate laughter.

The senior employee extended her hand through the window, exchanging a clean high-five with the driver. ”I like your style. You’re infinitely more engaging than the usual actors named Chris we get through here.”

Kai offered a light shrug. ”They are simply playing the Ken role.”

The laughter exploded across the service bay.

The small window was completely packed with staff, leaving the initial employee almost pushed out of view.

Yet she managed to hold her position, offering a wide smile. ”Your performance at COTA last year was spectacular. Absolute world-class racecraft.”

”I hope you take the fight directly to them this season!”

The tremor in her voice was distinct, her authentic excitement breaking through her professional role, her eyes locked onto the driver.

”Thank you!” Kai said smoothly. ”It’s excellent to verify that Formula 1 has an active audience in the city, and that people recognize we aren’t running rally stages through the Sahara.”

The girl laughed, but her voice was quickly covered by the senior cook. ”Wait, not the Sahara? What about the Amazon?”

Kai glanced toward the mirrors. ”While I’d love to review the local geography further, we are currently obstructing the lane and creating a significant traffic backup.”

The drivers in the vehicles ahead and behind had noticed the commotion, their initial reaction being to pull out their mobile devices to record the scene.

A driver further down the queue leaned out of his cabin, tapping his door panel as he shouted, ”What’s the delay out front?”

Kai smiled. ”It seems the burgers here carry massive performance value, or that gentleman is facing an absolute blood sugar emergency.”

The light joke triggered another round of laughter from the window.

Noticing the disappointment in the young employee’s eyes as they prepared to move, Kai checked her phone. ”We can manage a quick photo before the traffic compliance team arrives.”

Kai took the device, turning his back to the window ledge and raising the camera angle. The kitchen staff immediately crowded into the frame. The initial order taker was pushed slightly to the flank, but she secured her spot in the lens, surrounded by the rest of the crew like petals around a flower.

Kai called out, ”Julia! Focus on the lens!”

The girl blinked, her eyes widening as she realized the driver had parsed her name badge. Her expression froze in absolute surprise, her eyes turning bright with emotion as she locked onto the camera.

The shutter clicked.

The moment was locked into the digital file.

In the rear seat, Lorenzo quickly leaned forward to complete a bulk order, selecting a massive cross-section of items without analyzing the menu specifics, paying the tab rapidly before moving to the collection point.

The second window was equally chaotic, the staff leaning out to verify the rumor. ”So you’re the driver who matches the Captain America profile?”

Kai simply shook his head.

Amidst the unique local reception, they finally cleared the drive-thru lane, opening three massive paper bags filled entirely with burgers.

Staring at the sheer volume of fast food filling the cabin, Kai found the situation entirely absurd, breaking into a genuine laugh.

”This is uniquely American.”

However, his physical reserves were too low to prioritize culinary metrics. Food was fuel. He unwrapped a burger and took a massive bite.

”I’m not sure if my taste buds have been completely compromised by the flight fatigue, but this architecture actually possesses significant flavor merit. How did that happen?”

The moment Kai spoke, Todt turned around with a triumphant grin. ”See? What did I tell you? The logic holds!”

Lorenzo shook his head from the driver’s seat, his expression deeply critical. ”You’ve changed, Kai. You are no longer the driver who systematically dismantled the technical integrity of domestic pizza.”

Kai laughed out loud. ”That’s purely a function of starvation, Lorenzo. If you handed me a domestic pizza at this exact millisecond, I would brand it a culinary masterpiece.”

He turned back to his agent. ”Nicolas, how many of those kitchen employees were trained actors?”

Amidst the casual laughter, Kai dropped the tactical question with absolute calm. Lorenzo didn’t process the variable immediately. ”What are you talking about?”

Kai kept his smile quiet, his eyes locked onto Todt.

The agent held his breath, attempting to maintain a neutral expression to pass the audit, but Kai remained entirely relaxed, systematically finishing his burger.

When the body has gone without fuel for an extended period, digestion requires a deliberate pace.

Furthermore, the summer break represented a rare window where he could consume high-calorie options without triggering a fitness alert, making it mandatory to enjoy the experience fully.

Todt finally let his posture drop. ”Was the staging that obvious?”

”What!” Lorenzo let out a sharp exclamation, nearly breaking his steering inputs.

Kai remained perfectly steady. ”The execution was excellent; their performance was highly natural, and I almost accepted the scenario on face value. But analyzing the variables calmly once the car cleared the zone: our arrival at LAX was completely quiet, yet we locate an active Formula 1 fanbase at the very first drive-thru we pull into. What are the mathematical odds of that collision?”

”Ten percent. Sometimes you have to let destiny manage the track.”

”But a casual encounter that generates that level of localized crowd density, observed by every vehicle in the queue, indicates an engineered variable.”

”The ten percent probability drops to one percent under analysis. Consequently, I mapped out the coordination.”

Todt took a slow breath. ”The density was slightly over-engineered. I should have instructed them to maintain a more conservative profile.”

”Wait, Nicolas,” Lorenzo cut in. ”The entire interaction at the window was a pre-booked PR setup?”

Todt took a bite of his own burger. ”Not the entire staff. I only secured three actors to anchor the interaction.”

Lorenzo’s mouth opened in a perfect circle.

”Formula 1 is investing massive capital to penetrate the domestic market, and the Netflix docuseries has driven a significant spike in consumer tracking, meaning the sport is no longer an invisible niche,” Todt explained. ”But the North American landscape operates on an entirely self-contained cultural system, much like their relation to global soccer.”

”The corporate directors of soccer have spent thirty years investing in the domestic leagues, establishing a mature professional framework. Yet the European and South American media still view this continent as a soccer wilderness. The mainstream consumer consistently defaults to football or baseball; even hockey commands a larger historical audience than soccer.”

”Global motorsport faces the exact same structural boundary. Marketing push is one variable; converting digital traffic into permanent cultural influence requires a prolonged developmental curve. The market conditions aren’t fully mature yet.”

”But I know Kai possesses the unique crossover appeal to break those conventions. Just as he redefined the internal hierarchy of the paddock, he has the capacity to dismantle the domestic market’s preconceptions of what an F1 driver represents.”

”This summer premiere represents the optimal strategic opening. We are utilizing Ferrari’s corporate budget to run our own play, achieving two distinct objectives with a single move.”

The agent’s long-term commercial ambition was completely apparent.
