F1: The Speed Legend

”Toto Wolff arrived at Hockenheim with belief and determination, only to watch this race turn into a nightmare for Mercedes.”

”A 125th anniversary, a 75th anniversary—various celebrations, but clearly not the kind Mercedes desired.”

”A grand carnival ultimately morphed into a grand disaster. If the German Grand Prix exits the Formula 1 calendar in this manner, what does that mean for Mercedes?”

”A Grand Prix destined for the history books has become an open wound Mercedes will try to forget but can never escape. What exactly happened at Hockenheim?”

”Joy turns to sorrow! The 125th-anniversary celebration at Hockenheim turned into a humiliating final home race for Mercedes.”

Complaints, ridicule, banter, and mockery—

The gloating was impossible to suppress. Toto Wolff found himself in the eye of the storm, becoming a rare target of universal ridicule.

The retro outfits, which were supposed to be the finishing touch on a joyous celebration, unexpectedly turned into clown costumes. They nailed Mercedes to a pillar of shame, a constant reminder of the absurdity and embarrassment of the race. A carnival turning into Halloween—a true nightmare scenario.

The most unbelievable part was an article published by La Gazzetta dello Sport—

”Now, Can Hockenheim Stay?”

In truth, the authoritative Italian media outlet meant no harm. Reading past the headline, it was a professional analysis.

Considering the weather, the track layout, and the unpredictable conditions, Hockenheim was still spectacular. It presented a formidable challenge for every driver, whether a veteran like Hamilton or a genius like Kai. The circuit consistently threw up unexpected situations.

The 2018 German Grand Prix had already been brilliant, and 2019 further proved Hockenheim’s value. F1 should retain challenging circuits like this.

When people complained that F1 races lacked excitement and thrills, or that they were long and boring, keeping a track with such dramatic tension as Hockenheim made sense to add variables to the calendar. It was better than putting the cart before the horse, blindly seeking out new cities and tracks purely for profit and sponsorship.

The analysis from La Gazzetta dello Sport was professional and objective, representing an authoritative viewpoint from industry insiders.

However, in the eyes of the casual public, La Gazzetta dello Sport was throwing shade at Mercedes—

Suggesting a secret deal between the FIA and Mercedes.

Originally, Hockenheim had little hope for a contract renewal. But now, after Mercedes experienced such an abysmal race, they certainly wouldn’t want it to be their final home Grand Prix. Wolff needed revenge; he needed to wash away the humiliation and rewrite history. So, Hockenheim needed to be renewed, for at least one more race, to give Mercedes a chance to close the chapter properly.

So, who knows, maybe Mercedes pulled some strings, and without warning, Hockenheim’s renewal got the green light?

The Italian media was clearly hinting at Mercedes’ political maneuvers!

Consequently, the German media was furious—

Shouldn’t Ferrari take a look in the mirror first?

With Hockenheim potentially leaving the calendar, a slew of competitors naturally emerged. Among them, a strong contender was currently pushing forward: the Imola circuit.

Imola. For veteran fans, it was an unforgettable track, the place where the legendary Ayrton Senna tragically lost his life.

Imola is an Italian city bordering San Marino. The circuit there is called the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, named after the late Ferrari founder Enzo Ferrari and his son Dino. From 1981 to 2006, the track hosted the F1 Grand Prix under the name ”San Marino Grand Prix.”

In reality, the circuit is located in Italy, not the tiny enclave of San Marino. San Marino’s population is less than half of Imola’s. It didn’t take a genius to see that naming the race the San Marino Grand Prix to distinguish it from the Italian Grand Prix was just a clever workaround.

This allowed F1 to host two races in Italy per year, maximizing revenue from the Tifosi while technically adhering to the rule of not hosting two events in the same country.

Similar situations weren’t unprecedented in F1 history. During Schumacher’s peak, Germany also hosted two races—one as the German Grand Prix and the other as the European or Luxembourg Grand Prix. Ultimately, it was because Schumacher had the drawing power. Even with two races in Germany, the organizers still made a fortune.

The same applied now.

With Rosberg retired, Vettel struggling, and Hülkenberg floating in the midfield, the influence of German drivers in the paddock had waned. The decline was even more pronounced after Schumacher retreated from public life following his skiing accident.

In sharp contrast, F1 was actively trying to expand into the American market. They partnered with Netflix and pushed for a second US race alongside Austin, bringing Miami and even Las Vegas into the conversation.

The North American market, still largely a Formula 1 desert, was becoming a crucial target for F1’s next phase of expansion.

Against this backdrop, Italy’s political intent in joining the competition was glaringly obvious. They were clearly trying to host two races at Monza and Imola, using economic leverage to arm-wrestle Mercedes.

The German media was full of resentment over their fading influence and control in the motorsport world. After all, Mercedes was still at the peak. As defending Constructors’ Champions, they were the team everyone wanted to beat. Yet F1 seemed blinded by money, eagerly pandering to America while colluding with Italy. To the German media, this was an insult.

When the article from La Gazzetta dello Sport dropped, it struck a nerve. The German media united, unleashing incredible energy—

Before these authoritative Italian media outlets mocked and threw shade at Mercedes, they should review their own shady, behind-the-scenes maneuvers. Once Ferrari stopped using dirty tricks to buy off the FIA, then they could talk about Mercedes.

La Gazzetta dello Sport: ???

You damn German media, how about you read the article before speaking? Don’t act like those idiotic American outlets and get led by the nose so easily. We were clearly speaking up for Hockenheim, passionately urging F1 to reconsider and arguing that a track like this belongs in the sport. And this is the thanks we get? A knife in the back from you single-celled organisms?

More importantly, with so many media outlets mocking Mercedes, the German press specifically targeted the only one defending Hockenheim. Launching an attack to make an example of them—was this friendly fire or pure stupidity?

Damn it!

Now, the Italian media was furious too. It was like poking a hornet’s nest.

When it came to arguing, the Italian media feared no one, let alone the Germans.

Heh.

Back and forth, the German and Italian media began to brawl. The smoke of war spread everywhere. The fierce conflict, originating in the paddock, was expanding outward, becoming even more intense than the real wheel-to-wheel battles on the track. Both sides dropped their filters, going all out without holding back.

Undoubtedly, the number of allies rallying behind the Italian media far exceeded expectations. Mercedes found themselves fighting a lonely battle. The German media’s attempt to help seemed to backfire, pushing Mercedes further into the abyss of isolation.

The situation was getting ugly.

Faced with the German media’s bombardment, the Italian media maintained that they were Hockenheim’s only ally. They expressed exasperation at the German media’s irrational, indiscriminate attacks. This won them the moral high ground, and social media users began siding with Ferrari.

In a rare turn of events, Ferrari had public opinion on its side.

When it rains, it pours. Mercedes’ situation continued to deteriorate.

However, the actual truth—whether La Gazzetta dello Sport was genuinely throwing shade at Mercedes, or if Mercedes was feeling guilty and playing the victim to deflect attention—

Only the parties involved knew for sure.

Through this small opening, it was clear that the rivalry and competition among the top three teams had escalated fully, entering a white-hot phase. First, Horner lost his composure and interfered with Toro Rosso’s affairs; then, the German and Italian media tore up their polite facades and began cursing at each other. The confrontation sparked continuously.

Simultaneously, the anxiety and frustration of the German media offered a glimpse into Mercedes’ true predicament. They were genuinely in trouble, perhaps facing their biggest crisis of the season.

Externally, the noise of those kicking them while they were down was overwhelming. There was more than one team thrilled to see Mercedes struggling.

Internally, things were even worse. Mercedes was facing unprecedented turbulence and chaos.

Internal strife and external pressure. Enemies on all sides—

They were trapped.

Without a doubt, this was not the season Wolff had envisioned. They hadn’t even reached the summer break, and Mercedes was already facing severe challenges.

Before the 2019 season began, Mercedes was confident and ambitious. The excellence of the W10 gave them enough backing. They were unquestionably the leading ’spaceship’ on the grid. Even the highly competitive Ferrari trailed by a certain margin, which fueled Wolff’s confidence.

The championships were destined for Mercedes—both the Constructors’ and the Drivers’. But Wolff was looking further ahead. He wanted to crush Ferrari’s rising momentum, fully utilizing the opportunity presented by Marchionne’s passing to break Ferrari’s morale, thereby laying the foundation for Mercedes to dominate the paddock for seasons to come.

Ambitious and grand plans.

However, this massive scheme hit a brick wall starting in Melbourne.

One wrong step led to another.

Things derailed from that point. Although Wolff quickly found his footing, adjusted the strategy, and shelved his overly ambitious long-term plans to focus purely on the 2019 season—even narrowing his focus to just the next race—he achieved remarkable results in a short time.

Hamilton won consecutively in Azerbaijan, Spain, Canada, and France, adding to his win in Bahrain. He had secured five Grand Prix victories, dominating the paddock.

Yet, Wolff still couldn’t shake off Ferrari.

More accurately, he couldn’t shake off the Number 22 Ferrari.

Kai held on tight, relentlessly pursuing. Breaking through in Shanghai and Monaco, he continuously interrupted Mercedes’ attempts to establish dominance. Hamilton had yet to achieve three consecutive wins this season. Mercedes’ strength was constantly challenged and tested.

Furthermore, Kai exploited every opportunity to sow discord between Hamilton and Bottas. As a result, Wolff repeated a past mistake—

Just like with Hamilton and Rosberg.

Once again, Wolff failed to manage the competitive relationship between Hamilton and Bottas, which became the second turning point of Mercedes’ season.

Shanghai, Baku, Barcelona. Bottas took pole in three consecutive races, only to be stabbed in the back by Hamilton three times, missing out on the victory.

Wolff’s laissez-faire attitude allowed Hamilton to push boundaries. He even sacrificed Bottas in France just to stop Kai.

Step by step, destroying Bottas’s confidence created cracks in Mercedes’ iron wall, giving Kai, Verstappen, and even Leclerc openings. Once Bottas was defeated, Hamilton lost his teammate’s protection and suddenly became vulnerable.

Then came fast tracks like Austria and Germany, which were relative weak points for Mercedes. Ferrari and Red Bull seized the opportunity immediately—

And so, they ended up in this situation.

Austria, Britain, Germany. Three consecutive defeats. Among them, Hamilton’s home race and Mercedes’ home race delivered a double blow.

The truly terrible part was that Mercedes had been united and eager to sound the horn for a counterattack at Hockenheim, aiming to suppress the rising momentum of their rivals. They used off-track events to build hype, only for it to turn into a complete disaster. The ambitious plan backfired, turning them into the laughingstock of the paddock.

Bottas lost all confidence, Hamilton was left unsupported, and the pit lane was a mess. Hockenheim’s epic failures were enough to go down in Mercedes’ history, and it happened during such a crucial race. The Silver Arrows were restless and panicked, their confidence hitting rock bottom.

But even this wasn’t the worst part.

The worst part was that the in-season upgrades for the SF90 and RB15 had shown significant results. Although the W10 was also being patched up with localized upgrades, it seemed their development had fallen behind their rivals. Ferrari and Red Bull were continuously closing the gap, and Mercedes’ lofty position was under severe threat.

If they couldn’t cut their losses and control the situation soon, Mercedes’ on-track advantage would eventually vanish, entirely eaten away. When that happened, Mercedes would be forced into the dogfight of the midfield—

Look at Silverstone, and then look at Hockenheim. Facing the young, aggressive, and untamed Kai and Verstappen, Mercedes had no advantage in a rough, wild brawl with sleeves rolled up.

It was a major headache.

Simultaneously, the gloating and kicking while they were down on social media were endlessly annoying.

Although the mockery and attacks didn’t inflict substantial harm on Mercedes, they were like flies. A hundred thousand flies constantly buzzing outside the Mercedes base was incredibly irritating. The staff inside likely couldn’t focus.

Retreating again and again, with nowhere left to go, Mercedes now stood on the edge of a cliff.

Hockenheim was supposed to be the perfect time to launch a counterattack. Instead, with Bottas retiring and Hamilton finishing ninth, Mercedes only recovered two points. The only silver lining in the gloom was that Leclerc also retired and Albon missed the podium. Their rivals hadn’t fully capitalized on the opportunity to catch up, meaning Mercedes still had some breathing room.

They had to strike back. Quickly. Promptly.

Otherwise, entering the summer break with such low morale would have unthinkable consequences.

Holding a breath in his chest, Wolff finally exhaled. In the midst of extreme adversity, he regained his rationality, displaying the demeanor of the head of Mercedes.

The more chaotic it is, the calmer you must be.

The greater the difficulty, the more order is needed. He had to proceed step by step. He needed to multitask, sort through the threads, and prioritize solving problems. Especially in a highly interconnected environment like the paddock, only by clarifying his thoughts and planning targeted strategies could he fundamentally resolve the crisis. Otherwise, he would just be reacting to moves as they came, never regaining the initiative.

Step One—

Winning the PR war. This wasn’t about regaining the initiative for Mercedes fans, because Wolff knew they and the Tifosi were mortal enemies; reconciliation was impossible. It was about quieting the buzzing flies of casual observers and taking back control of the narrative.

Just as the wave of mockery against Mercedes on social media reached its peak, Sky Sports dropped a massive insider story:

At Hockenheim, Hamilton had raced with a fever of forty degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).

”The Iron Silver Arrow— Hamilton battles through illness at Hockenheim.”

The authoritative German outlet Bild immediately published a report revealing the behind-the-scenes story of Hockenheim. Hamilton, dragging a body suffering from a forty-degree fever onto the track, completed a grueling race with unparalleled tenacity and fighting spirit. His willpower was truly top-tier.

The article detailed the tense scenes in the garage. Hamilton, pale-faced, forehead burning hot, his body weak and limp, still put on his helmet and stepped into the cockpit. Every second gripping the steering wheel was filled with determination and a sense of mission. Hamilton bore the heavy responsibility of leading Mercedes out of the siege, and his champion’s heart never rested. In this chaotic race, the mental fortitude far exceeded the physical test.

Furthermore, the article revealed that Hamilton refused to disclose his illness. Only a handful of people in the Mercedes garage knew. He didn’t want his physical condition to affect team morale. Even after the race, Hamilton didn’t reveal a single clue to the media, refusing to use his illness as an excuse to justify his performance.

In fact, in the post-race interviews, Hamilton humbly and sincerely reviewed his mistakes and the team’s situation.

After the race, Hamilton was completely drained, barely able to stand. That was the real reason he arrived late to the mixed zone. After taking a moment to collect himself, he finally appeared, speaking eloquently in front of the reporters. Not a single journalist noticed anything amiss.

However, upon returning to his room, Hamilton collapsed.

In this article, the journalist’s writing was exceptionally restrained, avoiding deliberate sensationalism. The unadorned vocabulary actually allowed the reader to feel the weight and warmth behind the words. It painted a picture of a track that wasn’t just a track, but a hero’s path to the throne. Hamilton, carrying the hopes of Mercedes at their home race in Hockenheim despite his illness, fought tenaciously to the last moment, using concrete actions to demonstrate the resolve and perseverance of a World Champion.

A single stone stirred up a thousand ripples.

The entire paddock was boiling over.

Whether one agreed with Bild or aligned with the article’s stance and viewpoints, the facts presented were undeniably impactful.

It was true! No one had realized Hamilton was racing sick. There hadn’t been a whisper of it until the Grand Prix weekend was completely over.

Once the news broke, many things made sense.

No wonder! In the race, Hamilton uncharacteristically made two mistakes. While they weren’t major errors, they were indeed rare for him, especially in wet conditions. They ruined much of his hard work, and even Brundle had repeatedly exclaimed that it was abnormal.

So, this was the answer!

But!

Was the news true? Where did Bild get their sources?

Right when the German and Italian media were at each other’s throats, Bild suddenly dropped this bombshell. It not only shifted focus but also turned the tide. The entire motorsport world suddenly focused on Hamilton. Was there really no trickery involved? Was it all just a coincidence?

The professionals were sensitive to the unseen undercurrents.

However, they didn’t have to wait long. The British media quickly followed suit.

BBC, Sky Sports, The Times, and The Daily Mail all reported on it. The news erupted like a volcano, dominating public attention.

Using a calm and objective perspective, these media outlets not only confirmed Bild’s sources but also further emphasized the difficulty of Hamilton’s sick-drive.

”A fever of forty degrees, physical exhaustion, blurred mental state, severe body aches making it hard to even stand. And it wasn’t just during the race. The signs were there starting from Friday’s free practice. His physical condition deteriorated throughout the weekend, yet he completed the race with professionalism and unyielding fighting spirit.”

”A top driver’s commitment to the team, unwavering despite physical torment.”

Bombshell after bombshell dropped in rapid succession.

Social media was in an uproar.

#IronHamilton. A hashtag skyrocketed, rising with unstoppable momentum, breaking into the trending lists in one breath.

A sense of justice and sympathy was thoroughly ignited. Video clips, slow-motion replays, and interview screenshots flooded timelines, comprehensively reviewing the entire German Grand Prix weekend. Re-evaluating the race with this new information brought a different flavor. Mercedes’ reputation instantly flipped.

—Hamilton raced sick. With a forty-degree fever, a normal person would likely be delirious, struggling even to stand. Yet Hamilton not only took to the track and completed the race, but in such a chaotic, crazy event, he still managed to score points?

—Despite the relentless high fever, Hamilton burned his energy like a superhuman, withstanding Verstappen’s challenge in qualifying to take pole position. He burst with energy in a short time to complete a perfect lap, once again defending his honor with actions. A true champion.

Praise! Sighs! Marvels!

Endless.

The media and netizens echoed each other, instantly flipping the script. Hamilton transformed from ”the last straw breaking the camel’s back in the Silver Arrow dilemma” into ”the invincible Iron Man on the track.” The noisy doubts surrounding Mercedes reversed course, resulting in a completely different reputation:

Even with Bottas retiring, even with the German Grand Prix turning into a disaster, even with the pit crew’s epic mistake nailed to the pillar of shame, and team morale at rock bottom, public emotion had been swayed by Hamilton’s tragic heroism and passion. Mercedes fans and Hamilton fans united, exploding with unbelievable energy. Standing on the edge of a cliff, fighting against the world together, ignited all their energy.

The momentum could no longer be suppressed. The flattery exploded across the board—

”Under such difficult circumstances, he only made two mistakes??? If it were me, I wouldn’t have survived the first lap.”

”You guys are missing the point! What’s truly commendable is how he turned things around after the mistakes. Lewis stayed on the track. Even though he almost hit the wall, he controlled the situation through sheer willpower and finished the race. That is truly shining champion quality!”

”Without comparison, there is no harm. Look at Leclerc, look at Bottas. A tiny mistake completely ruined their races. Only by comparing can you understand how rare Lewis’s performance in saving his race after a mistake was. He didn’t retire. Not only did he not retire, but he also scored points!”

”Wait! Wait! Are you guys getting something wrong! It’s all the pit crew’s fault, okay? If it wasn’t for that epic pit stop error, Lewis still could have won the championship, okay? In other words, Lewis withstood the pressure, took pole, and firmly held the initiative for the win. It was the pit crew fumbling and ruining the race. Lewis dragged the team forward single-handedly, okay!”

Uh, things... the cause-and-effect relationship seems a bit off, right?

First, Hamilton made a mistake, causing the car to hit the wall and damaging the front wing. Having just pitted, he surprisingly pitted again immediately, right at the pit entry at Turn 16, leaving the pit crew only three to five seconds to react. A completely unexpected pit stop.

Only then was the pit crew, who had been preparing for Bottas, thrown out of rhythm, resulting in the rare mistake.

Hamilton fighting through illness to complete an unbelievable race was a fact. But there was no need to let that fact blind people to reason, or even twist the truth, right? Reversing the sequence of events completely changes the meaning. To say it evolved into two separate incidents wouldn’t be an exaggeration. That’s not right, is it?

However—

That didn’t matter.

The fanatic Hamilton fans had lost all reason. Once they crossed that line, there was no turning back, rushing headlong to the end of the world.
