F1: The Speed Legend

Everything had fundamentally changed.

From Monaco to Canada, anyone with functioning eyes could clearly see that the competitive hierarchy within the paddock was quietly, inexorably shifting. Mercedes-Benz’s terrifying, undisputed dominance was being slowly, methodically chipped away. The chaotic, three-way brawl between the ’Big Three’ was quietly escalating. The upcoming stretch of the season would undoubtedly act as the absolutely critical turning point.

For the Mercedes-Benz fanbase, they continued to loudly cheer for Hamilton. His massive lead in the Drivers’ Championship standings was expanding by the second. Hamilton appeared completely unstoppable in his pursuit of reclaiming his throne.

For the Tifosi, Ferrari’s competitive pace was on a massive, undeniable upward trajectory. They were aggressively chewing into the massive deficit in the Constructors’ Championship standings, violently threatening to shatter the established equilibrium.

This brutal reality meant that every single upcoming Grand Prix would be fiercely, bitterly contested. Every single microscopic detail possessed the terrifying power to radically alter the entire landscape of the season. Operating alongside Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari, Red Bull was constantly lurking, aggressively preparing to introduce their second massive upgrade package of the season, desperate to elevate their own competitiveness.

Operating within this highly volatile landscape, the phenomenal adaptability of the W10 undeniably played an absolutely critical role. This specific chassis wasn’t merely capable of flawlessly accommodating vastly different driving styles and forgiving driver errors; it possessed the terrifying ability to seamlessly adapt to the highly specific, incredibly diverse characteristics of every single circuit on the calendar. Whenever the battle moved to a brand-new arena, Mercedes-Benz consistently managed to secure a slight, critical advantage.

In a brutal, bayonets-drawn title fight, that microscopic advantage was frequently exactly what Mercedes-Benz needed to snatch the ultimate initiative.

Therefore, while the Ferrari and Red Bull garages were constantly illuminated throughout the night, with engineers frantically scrambling to find pace, Mercedes-Benz consistently completed their preparations and setup adjustments with terrifying, streamlined efficiency.

Canada was merely the absolute beginning of this massive shift. The subsequent races followed the exact same trajectory.

Next stop: France.

Following the massive, chaotic disruptions in Canada, Mercedes-Benz rapidly stabilized their footing and executed flawless tactical adjustments. The W10 put its unparalleled circuit adaptability on full, terrifying display. Hamilton secured a dominant, tyrannical victory, claiming his fifth trophy of the season and further expanding his massive lead in the Drivers’ Championship. Bottas crossed the line in P2. The violent disruption from the previous race was immediately rectified; Mercedes-Benz returned to their trademark 1-2 finish, aggressively utilizing the result to defend their absolute supremacy.

Ferrari... their underlying stability remained fundamentally lacking. Although Kai secured P3 and Leclerc took P4—which was undeniably a highly respectable result, allowing Leclerc to shed the humiliating ’Leclerc the Fifth’ moniker for the second consecutive race—they merely narrowly managed to fend off Red Bull. They completely failed to launch a genuine, lethal assault against Mercedes-Benz.

Immediately following France: Austria.

A massively chaotic race, utterly saturated with catastrophic, unpredictable variables. As the race entered its absolute final stages, the driver commanding the lead was—

Leclerc!

The young Number 16 Ferrari driver was a single lap away from securing the very first Grand Prix victory of his professional career, and successfully defeating his teammate, Kai, for the very first time this season. After enduring the catastrophic, nightmare-inducing curse of his home race in Monaco, Leclerc had completely transformed in the subsequent three races. He had undergone a phenomenal, massive evolution.

However, he fell short... agonizingly, heartbreakingly short.

In the final three laps, Verstappen, in hot pursuit, launched three consecutive, brutal waves of attack. Culminating in a highly aggressive, tyrannical overtake that arguably violated track limits by physically forcing Leclerc entirely off the circuit, Verstappen seized the lead. He crossed the finish line a mere 0.724 seconds ahead of Leclerc, securing his very first victory of the season.

The post-race atmosphere devolved into absolute, chaotic bedlam.

The specific maneuver Verstappen utilized to ultimately dispatch Leclerc triggered a massive, highly toxic controversy. Verstappen executed a massive, desperate late-braking maneuver up the inside, pulling completely alongside Leclerc. Leclerc, who had been subjected to a continuous barrage of aggressive defensive maneuvers, explicitly chose not to stubbornly defend the inside line to avoid a catastrophic collision. However, upon exiting the corner, Verstappen aggressively squeezed the racing line. There was fundamentally insufficient space. The two cars engaged in violent, wheel-to-wheel contact.

Leclerc was forced entirely off the track limits, losing the position.

This specific contact ignited a massive, fiery PR storm. Leclerc completely lost his temper over the radio. ”He literally forced me completely off the track! That is absolutely a time penalty!”

Immediately following the conclusion of the race, Leclerc, Verstappen, and their respective team representatives were officially summoned by the race stewards to participate in a highly intensive, closed-door investigation.

The FIA... acting entirely in character, attempted to play the grand peacemaker. They ultimately ruled the incident a standard ’racing incident’ and explicitly declined to take any further disciplinary action. Verstappen officially retained his victory.

According to the official FIA explanation, Verstappen executed a perfectly legal overtaking attempt on the inside line. He had successfully pulled alongside Leclerc early in the braking phase and maintained adequate control of his chassis. However, exiting the corner, there was a glaring lack of available racing room. The stewards determined that both drivers shared a degree of responsibility for the collision; therefore, no further penalties were warranted.

The massive, glaring problem was this: Just two races ago in Canada, Kai and Hamilton had been involved in an essentially identical, highly controversial incident. In that specific scenario, Kai was brutally slapped with a five-second time penalty, which directly gifted the victory to Hamilton, relegating Kai to second place by a margin of less than two seconds. Now, the exact same scenario plays out in Austria, and Verstappen miraculously escapes without a scratch?!

Identical circumstances. Blatant double standards.

Everything felt agonizingly, infuriatingly familiar.

For the past month, Ferrari and Red Bull had formed a silent, highly effective alliance to aggressively suppress Mercedes-Benz. Now, that alliance was violently shattered. The FIA was once again dragged directly into the blinding, toxic glare of the spotlight.

Monaco—Canada—Austria—

The FIA had consistently, aggressively targeted Ferrari. The white-hot fury of the Tifosi was broadcast with terrifying clarity. They were completely, absolutely sick and tired of this blatant, shameless differential treatment. If this was how the season was going to operate, why didn’t the FIA just skip the formalities and officially award both World Championships directly to Mercedes-Benz right now? Why bother forcing everyone to participate in this massive, theatrical charade for the rest of the year?

The entire social media ecosystem completely, violently exploded. The massive, boiling outrage directed at the FIA and Mercedes-Benz, which had been steadily accumulating since Monaco, was rapidly escalating toward an unprecedented, terrifying zenith.

It wasn’t just the Tifosi. Neutral fans and casual observers universally defected, rallying behind Ferrari. The number of people profoundly disgusted by Mercedes-Benz’s gluttonous, arrogant behavior was multiplying exponentially. The massive winds of public opinion were irreversibly shifting in Ferrari’s favor. Consequently, Red Bull and Verstappen were also violently dragged into the crosshairs of the public witch hunt.

For the hundred and first time, Verstappen was heavily involved in a massive, controversial collision.

For the hundred and second time, Verstappen’s tyrannical, hyper-aggressive, and highly impulsive driving style made him the primary target of universal public outrage.

However, did Red Bull actually care?

Absolutely not. The Red Bull Ring plunged into a state of absolute, unhinged madness. Their rationality was completely incinerated. They had been agonizingly, desperately waiting for this exact moment all season. Red Bull had finally secured their very first victory of the 2019 campaign, and they had miraculously achieved it at their absolute home race. Verstappen had officially become the very first driver to successfully shatter the dominant ’Kai-Hamilton-Bottas’ podium monopoly. The home crowd instantly, violently abandoned all logic.

In the brutal arena of competitive sports, the victor is crowned King, and the loser is cast into the mud.

Absolutely no one genuinely cares about the specific methods utilized to secure the victory. A win is a win, and a championship is a championship! As long as you possess absolute, terrifying power, all negative PR, toxic controversy, and bitter complaints become entirely irrelevant. Even the infamous ’Hand of God’ can eventually mutate into a glorious component of a champion’s aura, evolving into a legendary, mythical narrative.

The current situation was exactly the same.

”Max!”

”Max!”

The passionate, earth-shattering cheers echoed endlessly beneath the sky of the Red Bull Ring. Red Bull officially entered absolute party mode. They completely ignored the massive, toxic tsunami currently raging across social media.

Ultimately, the final classification for the Austrian Grand Prix was: Verstappen, Leclerc, Hamilton, Kai, Bottas, and Albon. The ’Big Three’ successfully monopolized the top six positions.

From a purely individual perspective, Kai was obviously profoundly dissatisfied. Not only had he finished behind Hamilton, but for the very first time this season, he had also finished behind Leclerc.

However, from a collective, team perspective, Ferrari had successfully, comprehensively suppressed Mercedes-Benz for the second time this season. The massive deficit in the Constructors’ Championship was shrinking once again.

Despite the agonizing struggles, despite the microscopic margins... there was absolutely zero doubt that Ferrari was progressing along the correct developmental path. They were continuing their relentless, aggressive campaign to fundamentally rewrite the narrative of the season.

Immediately following the conclusion of the race, Kai was the very first person to congratulate Leclerc. He offered genuine comfort to the young prodigy. He intimately understood the profound, bitter agony of being violently overtaken in the absolute final moments of a race. The emotion was so overwhelmingly intense that Leclerc was completely incapable of celebrating the fact that he had finally, successfully defeated his teammate for the first time this season—

Verstappen.

Everything revolved entirely around Verstappen. Leclerc’s boiling fury, his profound frustration, and his suffocating depression were directed exclusively at Verstappen. Following the race, the usually impeccably polite, elegantly refined Leclerc displayed a highly rare, terrifyingly cold demeanor. He flatly refused to exchange a single word with Verstappen. He wouldn’t even grant him a single glance. He explicitly refused to acknowledge Verstappen’s existence.

At this exact moment, Leclerc finally truly comprehended the sheer magnitude of Kai’s psychological resilience. Although a driver’s teammate always serves as their primary, most immediate benchmark... if their vision remains permanently restricted entirely to the internal team dynamic, they will fundamentally never reach the absolute highest peaks. It wasn’t simply about securing the Constructors’ Championship; it was about elevating their strategic vision to encompass the entire, massive global battlefield.

Exactly like Vettel had done last season.

However!

Even though Kai had immediately comforted Leclerc, explicitly advising him to hold his head high and focus entirely on the massive positives... Leclerc ultimately found it completely impossible to forgive Verstappen.

During his post-race interviews, Verstappen stubbornly refused to concede that his maneuver was a foul. He adamantly maintained that the FIA’s ruling was perfectly justified. Conversely, Leclerc remained fiercely, unshakeably convinced that he had been the victim of massive, blatant injustice by the FIA.

There was zero communication, and absolutely zero de-escalation. The suffocating, lethal tension generated inside the stewards’ office continued to rapidly escalate.

After all the official post-race obligations had officially concluded, Leclerc and Verstappen were scheduled to share a private jet back to Nice. Kai had explicitly orchestrated this specific arrangement, hoping to force the two drivers to communicate privately and resolve their differences. Therefore, Kai, accompanied by Norris, Albon, and a few others, opted to take a different private jet back to Nice, deliberately granting them absolute privacy.

However, while literally sitting on that exact same private jet, Leclerc formally, publicly unfollowed Verstappen on Instagram.

A short while later, Verstappen retaliated, formally unfollowing Leclerc.

The two childhood friends, who had grown up racing together, who had survived countless massive storms together, and who had forged a seemingly unbreakable, profound bond... had officially, violently severed their relationship. The dynamic plunged into absolute, freezing hostility.

In theory, the confined, highly private environment of a private jet should have provided the absolute perfect opportunity to clear the air. As long as both parties were genuinely willing to communicate, absolutely anything could be resolved. But no one had anticipated that the two young, hot-blooded, fiercely proud drivers would completely, stubbornly refuse to engage in any dialogue. Not only did they completely fail to resolve the underlying conflict, but the animosity actually violently escalated—

This... was also an undeniable possibility.

Kai didn’t pay any attention to Instagram. Norris was actually the very first person to discover the digital fallout. They had absolutely no idea what horrific events had transpired on that private jet. But the fact that Norris noticed it meant that the entire paddock would notice it within minutes.

The situation had officially passed the point of no return.

In a flash, everyone was eagerly gossiping about the lethal, bayonets-drawn tension between Verstappen and Leclerc. Following the massive, highly public fallout between Kai and Hamilton, the paddock was being treated to yet another massive, highly entertaining soap opera.

But vastly more important than the petty drama was the reality that the championship battle was continuing to violently fluctuate. The competitive landscape of the season was fracturing even further. This was driven by Ferrari’s successful, aggressive suppression of Mercedes-Benz, and also by Red Bull’s sudden, terrifying resurgence—

The Red Bull Ring was a circuit that heavily prioritized rhythm control, while simultaneously demanding high mechanical grip in the low-to-medium-speed corners. Red Bull’s two massive upgrade packages had clearly delivered phenomenal, highly tangible performance gains. Furthermore, it wasn’t just Verstappen; Albon was consistently delivering increasingly stable, highly impressive performances, demonstrating his own lethal edge. This clearly signaled that Red Bull’s pursuit was rapidly closing the gap.

First it was Ferrari, and now it was Red Bull. Although Mercedes-Benz still technically held the lead in both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championship standings, their absolute control over the season was undeniably, slowly slipping through their fingers. This dynamic was fundamentally different from previous years.

Historically, Mercedes-Benz excelled at maintaining absolute control during the long, agonizingly slow, grinding phases of a season. They would utilize methodical, incremental improvements to eventually crush their rivals’ spirits. However, this season, despite executing a flawless, terrifyingly dominant opening phase, Mercedes-Benz was currently forced to helplessly watch as their massive advantage was systematically chewed away. The subtle, highly volatile psychological shifts occurring within the organization were beginning to play a massive, completely unpredictable role—

It might be a positive development, or it might trigger a catastrophic collapse. Absolutely anything was possible.

But without a shadow of a doubt, following the conclusion of the Austrian Grand Prix, the overarching narrative of the season devolved into even deeper chaos. Every single upcoming race was guaranteed to feature significantly more brutal, intense combat.

And conveniently, the very next race on the calendar was—

Silverstone.

A highly technical circuit that heavily demanded flawless rhythm control. A circuit that brutally tested absolute chassis performance. And most importantly... a circuit where every single member of the ’Big Three’ possessed a genuine, highly realistic opportunity to secure the victory.

Having just secured a massive victory in Austria, Red Bull undoubtedly commanded the global spotlight. Verstappen’s ferocious, flat-out assault on Leclerc in the closing stages raised a massive question: was that phenomenal performance entirely a product of Verstappen’s sheer, individual brilliance? Or did it signify that Red Bull had successfully unlocked the ultimate performance potential of their chassis? Or, conversely, did it simply expose the reality that Ferrari still possessed a massive, fatal vulnerability?

Most critically of all... was Red Bull merely content to play the role of the chaotic disruptor? Or were they fully prepared to violently drop Ferrari and launch a direct, full-scale assault against Mercedes-Benz, genuinely challenging for the ultimate World Championship throne?

In this massive, three-way war, the spotlight had officially pivoted to Red Bull. The conversations and debates occurring both inside and outside the paddock revolved entirely around them.

Amidst this massive wave of deafening noise, Ferrari miraculously managed to secure a brief, incredibly precious moment of peace. The massive swarm of journalists that had been permanently camped outside Maranello had largely vanished. It was highly likely they were all currently staking out the Red Bull factory in Milton Keynes.

For Ferrari, this was undeniably a massive blessing.

Since the beginning of the new season, the chaotic, buzzing noise from the outside world hadn’t ceased for a single microsecond. It was exactly like being surrounded by tens of thousands of buzzing flies constantly swarming their ears. It felt as though the media was terrified that the internal friction and controversy within Maranello wasn’t severe enough, so they constantly, aggressively poured gasoline on the fire. They desperately wanted the Ferrari ’Clown Show’ to mutate into an even more spectacular, catastrophic disaster.

Although Binotto had executed a rapid, decisive emergency brake, completely locking down the Maranello base and violently severing all access from probing eyes and toxic gossip, he still couldn’t completely eradicate the flies. The relentless, chaotic noise continued unabated, constantly manufacturing problems in unseen corners, eagerly waiting for the massive bomb buried deep within the facility to finally detonate.

But now! Finally!

Maranello was experiencing a fleeting moment of tranquility.

Whoosh. Kai opened the window, gazing out at the distant silhouette of the mountains. ”Am I currently hallucinating, or is it actually possible to hear the birds singing again?”

The underlying subtext was glaringly obvious: the journalists had finally vanished, the paparazzi had retreated, and the world finally felt somewhat peaceful again.

He turned around, looking at the heavy, profound silence dominating the conference room. He spread his hands and offered a light shrug. ”Are you guys absolutely certain you don’t want to provide even a polite chuckle for my joke?”

Pfft—

The self-deprecating humor finally successfully shattered the oppressive, slightly suffocating atmosphere inside the room. Clear was the first to completely lose his battle for composure. His shoulders began shaking violently.

The bald engineer turned his head, scanning the room. ”Please, give our Captain a little bit of encouragement. Didn’t you see his adorable little face? He looks exactly like he’s about to burst into tears.”

Having delivered the punchline, Clear was the first to begin clapping loudly.

Standing at the front of the room, Kai playfully executed a highly exaggerated, gentlemanly bow to express his gratitude. Then, he turned to face the individual standing near the projection screen... the other bald man in the room.

”Please. The floor is yours.”

The second bald man possessed a highly distinctive, square jawline, a prominent nose, and a pair of massive, soulful ’puppy dog’ eyes. Unlike Clear—whose default expression made him look like a terrifying, highly dangerous thug—even when this man wasn’t smiling, his eyes projected an aura of profound, almost tragic innocence. He instantly looked exactly like the nicest guy on Earth.

—Simone Resta. Chief Chassis Designer. The brilliant mind entirely responsible for creating the SF70H and the SF71H. He was the man who had single-handedly dragged Ferrari out of the catastrophic mud of the turbo-hybrid era and forcefully reinstated them as legitimate championship contenders.

Within Ferrari, despite their stubborn insistence on remaining isolated in Maranello, they had absolutely never suffered from a lack of elite engineering talent. fiercely loyal Italians and die-hard Tifosi consistently provided Ferrari with a massive, endless supply of raw brilliance and energy. Resta was undeniably a core member of that elite group. The Italian engineer had officially entered Formula 1 via Minardi in 1998, fresh out of university. He had subsequently joined Ferrari in 2001 and had remained there ever since.

Ferrari absolutely did not lack elite talent. Their catastrophic, fatal flaw was that they fundamentally did not understand how to properly utilize that talent. Furthermore, they consistently, repeatedly hemorrhaged their absolute best minds due to completely idiotic, entirely avoidable internal politics.

Aldo Costa. James Allison. These were truly elite, world-class minds entirely cultivated and developed by Ferrari. Yet, they were fundamentally unable to achieve their ultimate potential within the suffocating environment of Maranello. They were subsequently poached by Mercedes-Benz, eventually becoming the crucial, behind-the-scenes architects responsible for engineering the terrifying ’alien-tier’ chassis that dominated the sport.

In many ways, Resta’s trajectory was agonizingly similar.

Last season, the SF71H consistently suffered from catastrophic issues in low-to-medium-speed corners. The aerodynamic upgrade path suffered a massive, fatal deviation. Following Marchionne’s death, the team devolved into a brutal, bloody internal civil war. Resta was ultimately selected to serve as the sacrificial lamb. He was forced to carry the entire blame and was unceremoniously expelled. He subsequently joined Sauber to serve as their Technical Director, instantly becoming the primary target of vicious attacks from the Tifosi—

He was labeled a traitor.

It was an incredibly simple word to throw around, completely devoid of any actual weight or nuance. But what was the actual, objective truth? What truly defined betrayal, and what truly defined loyalty? How should ultimate value be accurately quantified? These were highly complex questions that likely only the individuals directly involved could truly answer.

Following the miraculous victory in Monaco, Kai and Binotto engaged in another massive, highly intensive discussion. Although the SF90 had finally established a baseline level of competitiveness, its underlying stability and adaptability remained massive, glaring vulnerabilities. The specific causes behind Leclerc’s retirement were incredibly complex and could not be blamed on a single, isolated failure. This was the exact area they needed to target for their next massive upgrade package. They desperately needed an influx of new perspectives, fresh ideas, and dynamic intellectual friction. They needed a massive brainstorming session.

Ferrari absolutely never lacked talent. What they desperately lacked was a functional platform and a safe space where those brilliant minds could actually be heard without fear of political retribution.

If Ferrari genuinely intended to permanently cure the deeply entrenched, toxic diseases that had plagued the organization for decades—and if they wanted to accomplish this without simultaneously alienating every single person currently working in Maranello—then opening a tiny window within the technical department to genuinely, actively solicit diverse opinions and opposing viewpoints was likely the absolute most pragmatic starting point. They needed to plant a single seed of hope.

Following that specific conversation, Binotto engaged in a period of profound, serious contemplation. Ultimately, he personally reached out to Resta.

Absolutely no one knew exactly what Binotto said to convince him. Naturally, navigating the complex contract negotiations with Alfa Romeo was also a massive hurdle. Regardless, the two teams executed a highly complex series of personnel transfers. Prior to the French Grand Prix, Resta officially returned to Ferrari. He assumed the role of Chief Designer, operating in a highly specialized, supportive capacity directly under Binotto.

Currently, Resta’s responsibilities were divided into two distinct, highly critical phases.

The primary, overarching objective was to immediately begin the foundational design work for the 2020 chassis.

The secondary, supportive objective was to actively participate in the ongoing development of the SF90. He was tasked with providing fresh perspectives, alternative viewpoints, and vital inspiration to guide the upcoming aerodynamic upgrades for the remainder of the 2019 season.

Today was the very first time Resta had officially participated in a core technical debrief since his highly publicized return to Ferrari. Inevitably, he was feeling incredibly anxious.

From last season to the current campaign, Resta had absolutely never interacted with Kai directly. His entire understanding of the young driver was based entirely on the wild, exaggerated rumors circulating the paddock—

According to the rumors, Kai was essentially a terrifying, bloodthirsty demon who casually devoured small children for breakfast.

In the high-stakes world of motorsport, drivers who possessed the sheer courage to directly challenge the technical department weren’t exactly common, but they definitely existed. However, drivers who could actually successfully dominate those technical debates and aggressively seize total control of the developmental direction were incredibly, exceptionally rare.

If Kai possessed the terrifying audacity to directly confront John Elkann—showing him absolutely zero respect and flatly refusing to yield an inch—then a relatively minor player like Resta possessed absolutely zero chance of survival.

Resta nervously swallowed hard. While everyone else in the room was laughing uproariously, he was the only person physically incapable of cracking a smile.

He accidentally made fleeting eye contact with Kai. Resta instantly, reflexively turned his head, desperately looking to Binotto for support.

Binotto placed his right hand firmly on the desk and executed a subtle, downward pressing motion, explicitly signaling for Resta to remain calm. Resta secretly clenched his fists, utilizing every ounce of his willpower to force himself to relax.

Binotto had explicitly assured him that the current iteration of Maranello was fundamentally different. Although they hadn’t completely eradicated the toxic culture overnight, they were undeniably, actively exploring completely new operational paradigms.

Resta firmly believed that Binotto wasn’t lying. Binotto had absolutely zero reason to lie. If Ferrari called, Resta would have answered regardless. Even if it meant flying directly into a blazing inferno. Even if it meant emerging completely battered and scarred. He genuinely, desperately wanted to be a part of this organization, even if he was merely a single, insignificant brick in the foundation.

Letting out a slow, stabilizing exhale, Resta turned his attention back to the projection screen. There were no flashy presentation slides, and absolutely no flowery, PR-friendly explanations. There was only raw data, data, and more data—

Complex performance curves, highly intricate geometric diagrams, and massive, dense spreadsheets.

Following the initial upgrade package in Barcelona, Maranello had been continuously, aggressively preparing for the second major evolution. While the Grand Prix weekends were actively ongoing, the two drivers were constantly, relentlessly gathering massive volumes of telemetry data. This process started the exact microsecond Free Practice 1 commenced.

At this specific juncture, the massive strategic advantage of employing two incredibly young, highly energetic drivers became glaringly obvious. Furthermore, they were two profoundly talented prodigies. Not only were they overflowing with relentless energy and burning passion, but they were also capable of gathering incredibly diverse data sets, continuously providing highly detailed, incredibly nuanced feedback from entirely different analytical perspectives. The sheer volume of telemetry data literally threatened to drown the Maranello technical department.

For the engineers, this was an absolute dream scenario. Massive data sets formed the absolute, fundamental bedrock for all theoretical engineering.

The second major upgrade package wasn’t actually a massive, revolutionary overhaul. It was more accurately defined as a highly meticulous, microscopic refinement of their current trajectory. In the terrifyingly complex realm of Formula 1, as you approach the absolute pinnacle of performance, the engineering becomes increasingly, agonizingly granular. They needed to discover a vastly more delicate, highly sensitive equilibrium within the absolute extreme performance envelope of the SF90. They desperately needed to extract significantly more stability and consistency, thereby granting the drivers the required foundation to continue violently pushing the absolute limits of the chassis.

Whether it was Kai or Leclerc, they absolutely did not fear massive challenges. Their true, fundamental terror was discovering that the chassis completely lacked the required performance ceiling to accommodate their aggressive extraction, or lacking the necessary time to fully explore those limits.

Therefore, this specific upgrade wasn’t designed to violently overturn the entire chassis philosophy. It was entirely focused on microscopic adjustments to slightly shift the ultimate center of aerodynamic balance.

Before the meeting began, Resta had been so anxious he literally didn’t know what to do with his hands. But the exact second the technical presentation commenced, he projected an entirely different, highly professional aura. His soft, expressive ’puppy dog’ eyes were instantly illuminated with a brilliant, laser-focused intensity.

Sharp and incredibly bright.

The absolute primary focus remained the complex geometry of the suspension.

This absolutely was not a massive, radical redesign of the entire system. It was a highly meticulous, microscopic redefinition of the angle of the upper wishbone and the steering knuckle on the front suspension. Resta summarized the highly complex engineering theory using the most concise, straightforward language possible—

The explicit objective was to aggressively mitigate the massive, instantaneous load fluctuations experienced by the front tires during the critical braking phase. This would make the rapid fluctuations in mechanical grip during corner entry significantly more predictable for the drivers.

”The primary objective of this specific upgrade is not to instantly generate a faster ultimate single-lap time. It is entirely designed to provide the driver with vastly clearer, significantly more predictable tactile feedback regarding exactly when the chassis is going to react.”

Resta turned to face the room. He subconsciously locked eyes with Leclerc, deliberately attempting to avoid looking directly at Kai. But despite his best efforts, his peripheral vision accidentally caught Kai’s expression.

Resta was surprised to see that Kai was staring at the screen with an expression of profound, absolute focus. There wasn’t a single trace of his earlier, joking demeanor. However, deep within his eyes, there was an unmistakable glimmer of genuine approval.

Resta froze for a microsecond. But he absolutely lacked the courage to interrupt the presentation to ask questions. He hurriedly averted his gaze, forcing himself to refocus entirely on his presentation—

Inspiration. Inspiration. Inspiration.

His primary duty was to introduce entirely different analytical perspectives and provide highly unique viewpoints to actively trigger inspiration within the team. He just needed to remain entirely focused on his specific responsibilities. There was absolutely no need to panic. There was absolutely nothing to be terrified of!

In merely a season and a half, Maranello was already overflowing with countless, terrifying legends regarding Kai. Before anyone had even consciously realized it, the suffocating, oppressive aura of those legends had completely saturated the entire facility. Resta was currently experiencing the full, terrifying brunt of that legendary pressure firsthand.

Kai remained completely oblivious to Resta’s nervous glances. He was entirely, obsessively absorbed in reading the raw data. The sheer volume of information was staggering.

However, Resta’s incredibly concise summary was absolutely flawless. It struck the nail directly on the head. The fundamental flaw plaguing the SF90 wasn’t simply a lack of raw mechanical grip in low-to-medium-speed corners. The true, catastrophic nightmare was the severe latency in sensory feedback—

The physical signals generated by the chassis were consistently, agonizingly delayed by a critical half-beat.

In the chaotic, rapidly evolving environment of a Grand Prix, drivers are required to continuously, instantaneously process massive volumes of data regarding the chassis and the circuit. If the tactile feedback provided by the chassis is severely delayed, or worse, fundamentally incomplete, it triggers a massive cascade of catastrophic problems.

The driver’s cognitive processing might become congested, or they might misinterpret the data, or they might miss critical warnings entirely. This means their subsequent tactical judgments and physical inputs will require massive, frantic micro-corrections.

A single correction might cost a thousandth of a second. Or perhaps a tenth of a second. But accumulated over the entire duration of a grueling Grand Prix, those microscopic, compounding delays possessed the terrifying potential to completely, irreversibly destroy any chance of securing the victory.

For a driver like Leclerc, whose style was highly reliant on instantaneous reflex, this specific latency was absolutely fatal.

The next item on the agenda was the braking system.

The physical calipers, the hydraulic lines, and the cooling ducts remained completely unchanged. The massive, fundamental alteration involved a complete reprogramming of the brake bias distribution logic and a radical remapping of the brake pedal travel.

Resta’s explicit objective was incredibly clear: Flawlessly synchronize the braking phase with the optimal temperature window of the Pirelli tires.

Throughout the 2019 season, one of the W10’s absolute, most terrifying advantages was its unparalleled synergy with the Pirelli operating windows. This massive advantage was especially glaringly obvious when operating on cold tires.

This was fundamentally an aerodynamic puzzle, but it was simultaneously a highly complex tire management crisis.

The Racing Point chassis was essentially a highly detailed, carbon copy of the Mercedes-Benz design. Yet, it completely failed to achieve even a fraction of the W10’s ultimate performance. The fundamental reason was that the complex, highly integrated aerodynamic ecosystem wasn’t perfectly, flawlessly harmonized with the underlying mechanical grip of the chassis. Simply tracing the outline of a masterpiece was absolutely insufficient to create an ’alien-tier’ race car. It was exactly like trying to paint a terrifying tiger by only drawing its fur, completely ignoring the complex skeletal structure underneath.

Naturally, this exact same brutal reality applied to Ferrari.

Resolving the massive, fundamental aerodynamic flaws was undeniably an incredibly complex, long-term project. It absolutely could not be achieved overnight. Therefore, Resta was explicitly choosing to attack the problem from the perspective of tire management. He was attempting to artificially extend the optimal operating window of the SF90, significantly boosting its stability and long-run consistency. This would ensure that once Kai and Leclerc successfully identified the optimal extraction method—

They would be fully capable of sustaining that aggressive extraction for significantly extended periods.

This objective perfectly aligned with the directional adjustments applied to the suspension geometry.

Analyzing the highly specific telemetry gathered in France and Austria, the SF90 consistently struggled during the critical opening phase of the race, and immediately following pit stops. They frequently required two, or even three full laps to properly elevate the front axle to the optimal operating temperature. During this agonizingly slow warm-up phase, their overall rhythm was inevitably, violently dictated by their opponents.

The cascading consequence was that their overarching race strategy became incredibly restricted and inflexible. If they could successfully eliminate this specific vulnerability, the viability of deploying highly aggressive, unconventional strategic maneuvers would be massively expanded.

”The issue isn’t that you aren’t braking aggressively enough. The problem is that you are forced to initiate the braking phase too early.”

Resta pointed directly at the data curves. ”We are subjecting the front tires to massive, extreme loads during the initial corner-entry phase, but the core temperature simply isn’t present yet. The inevitable, catastrophic result is massive sliding and severe understeer.”

The proposed solution wasn’t increased aggression; it was absolute, surgical precision.

Implementing a significantly shorter, highly compressed brake response zone, combined with vastly clearer, more immediate pedal feedback. This would explicitly empower the drivers to apply absolute maximum braking pressure at the exact microsecond the tires finally entered their optimal temperature window.

A second voice finally broke the silence in the room. ”If this theory proves correct, does this imply that regardless of whether the tires are completely cold or perfectly baked into the window, I will possess the capability to actively, aggressively dictate the braking rhythm?”

Although it was phrased exactly like a question, it unmistakably broadcast a massive, highly aggressive statement of intent.

The muscles in Resta’s shoulders visibly tensed. He slowly turned around. Exactly as he feared, he found himself staring directly into Kai’s brilliant, laser-focused eyes. Kai’s gaze was locked obsessively onto the projection screen.

When Kai didn’t receive an immediate response, he finally turned his head, slightly raising an eyebrow. He fired a highly interrogative glance directly at Resta.

Resta hurriedly cleared his throat. ”Theoretically... yes. That is correct.”

Kai tilted his chin up slightly. ”Oh. Theoretically.”

Resta’s throat went completely dry again. ”What I mean is... the data we’ve gathered from the simulator testing strongly suggests that...”

The massive, agonizing chasm separating theoretical projections from practical application. The catastrophic disconnect between pristine simulator data and the brutal, visceral reality experienced by the drivers on the asphalt. This was the exact, explosive core conflict that had been violently tearing Maranello apart for over a year. It was also the exact, specific reason Resta had been forced to shoulder the blame and flee to Sauber in the first place.

Now, being forced to directly confront Kai regarding this highly sensitive issue once again, Resta couldn’t help but feel a massive surge of anxiety. The terrifying nightmares of the past were rapidly resurfacing. After an incredibly long, agonizing detour, they had essentially ended up exactly where they started.

However, before Resta could even finish his sentence, Kai effortlessly cut him off. ”Yes. I understand.”

This specific debate had already been exhausted in Maranello countless times. Kai possessed absolutely zero desire to waste any more time arguing about it. ”Please, proceed to the next point.”

Resta honestly wasn’t entirely certain if this was a positive or a catastrophic development. His immediate, instinctual reaction was to desperately look toward Binotto, silently begging for assistance. Before Binotto could even attempt to formulate a response, Clear’s lazy, unbothered drawl drifted across the room. ”Please, relax, Simone. Kai doesn’t actually eat people. I promise.”

Rustle, rustle. Soft, suppressed laughter rippled through the conference room.

Even Leclerc couldn’t suppress a grin.

Kai was incredibly cooperative. He flashed a massive, brilliant smile, exposing a perfect row of blindingly white teeth. He opened his mouth incredibly wide, exactly as if he were a terrifying cannibal preparing to devour his prey, staring directly at Resta with an expression of pure, unadulterated joy.

This time, even Binotto couldn’t suppress a smile. He shook his head in profound, helpless amusement.

The massive smile vanished from Kai’s face as quickly as it had appeared. He immediately pivoted back to business. ”So, exactly how are we planning to redefine the Race pace trajectory curve?”

Resta’s scattered thoughts were violently yanked back to reality—

This wasn’t simply a discussion about a single, isolated component upgrade. This was a massive, fundamental paradigm shift in their entire operational philosophy.

The engineering and strategy departments were no longer going to stubbornly attempt to match Mercedes-Benz’s average lap times. Instead, they were going to meticulously deconstruct the entire race distance. They were going to redefine their target rhythm based entirely on the highly specific, unique characteristics of their own chassis. They needed to develop highly specialized, dynamic interpretations for every single tire stint, every single fluctuation in fuel load, and every single potential window of vulnerability that could be exploited during a Safety Car deployment.

Kai had been aggressively, relentlessly hammering this exact point since the season opener in Melbourne. After enduring race after race of brutal, undeniable validation on the asphalt, Maranello had finally, completely accepted this reality.

The actual, live conditions of a Grand Prix constantly generated massive, chaotic variables that simply could not be accurately replicated in a simulator. This was an undeniable, objective fact. Furthermore... when dealing specifically with the SF90, these unpredictable variables were exponentially more frequent and vastly more difficult to manage. This terrifying instability wasn’t even restricted exclusively to the Race; it heavily infected Qualifying as well. The catastrophic disaster in Monaco served as a brutal, bloody testament to that fact.

In Austria, Leclerc had ultimately failed to repel Verstappen’s ferocious assault in the closing laps. Aside from the fact that Verstappen’s attack was undeniably aggressive, relentless, and arguably highly illegal... the fundamental, underlying reason for the failure was that the SF90’s highly unstable mechanical grip in the final stages of the race completely failed to provide Leclerc with the necessary foundation to defend himself—

That highly specific, catastrophic deterioration in grip had absolutely never materialized during their simulator testing.

Furthermore, when presented with nearly identical crises during live races, Kai consistently managed to handle the instability with significantly more maturity and microscopic precision. He utilized undeniable, concrete actions on the asphalt to perfectly validate his elite car control.

Rome wasn’t built in a day. Naturally, fundamentally shifting a deeply entrenched, dogmatic engineering philosophy required a massive, continuous accumulation of evidence over time.

But now, the critical moment had finally arrived.

Resta took a deep, fortifying breath. He finally mustered the courage to look directly into Kai’s eyes. ”We desperately need you to explicitly tell us exactly when you require absolute stability, and exactly when you require the chassis to be optimized for maximum, flat-out aggression.”

He finally said it. The words were officially out in the open.

The exact microsecond Resta finished his sentence, the air in the room instantly solidified. It wasn’t just completely silent; it was freezing cold. The ambient temperature seemed to plummet by several degrees in an instant.

Anyone who closely follows Formula 1 knows the standard operational protocol: The specific directives detailing exactly when a driver is authorized to push, and exactly when they must manage their pace, are issued exclusively by the pit wall.

Even a driver of Hamilton’s caliber is absolutely no exception.

”Push. Push.” That simple, two-word command is the absolute, definitive authorization for a driver to unleash 100% of their available performance.

During the season opener in Melbourne, when Hamilton was trailing Kai, he patiently waited for the pit wall to issue the ’Push’ command, explicitly authorizing him to launch his assault. But the command was agonizingly delayed. Frustrated beyond belief, Hamilton eventually snapped over the radio, ”I don’t care anymore, I’m pushing.” He explicitly, aggressively defied the pit wall’s instructions and initiated a premature push phase.

And what was the ultimate, catastrophic result?

Two massive lockups. He completely, irrevocably lost any realistic chance of reclaiming the position. That specific act of insubordination ultimately allowed Kai to author the miraculous, historic feat of securing a Grand Prix victory in his very first professional race.

And now, Resta was actually suggesting they formally surrender that massive, critical strategic authority directly to Kai?

Was he... completely out of his mind?

The massive, core conflict that had defined the entire season boiled down to this exact issue. The engineers obsessively prioritized absolute precision, predictable stability, and flawlessly replicable control. Kai stubbornly insisted on relying on instinct, dynamic adaptation, and highly reactive, real-time tactical adjustments.

The simulator could flawlessly generate a hundred different race scenarios, and the engineers blindly believed that was more than sufficient to cover absolutely every conceivable eventuality. But Kai firmly believed that reality was always the hundred-and-first scenario. It was mathematically impossible for a live race to perfectly mirror a computer simulation.

The massive, high-stakes political tug-of-war between Kai and the engineering department was still actively raging.

Yet, now, at this exact moment, Resta—who had only just miraculously returned to the fold—was actually suggesting they fundamentally merge these two vastly opposing philosophies. Was everyone absolutely certain he wasn’t a corporate spy covertly operating for Alfa Romeo? Or perhaps he was executing a highly elaborate, meticulously planned scheme to exact massive, catastrophic revenge on Ferrari?

The air was dead silent. Rigid. Yet, simultaneously, it was boiling with violent energy. Even though there wasn’t a single audible sound, one could practically hear the massive, deafening roar of a raging tsunami constantly hammering against their eardrums.

Even Kai was mildly surprised. He raised an eyebrow. Although this was the exact, fundamental paradigm shift he had been relentlessly fighting for... hearing Resta casually propose it so bluntly was still highly unexpected. He shot a quick glance at Binotto. To his profound surprise, Binotto looked exactly like a Zen monk deep in meditation. He didn’t appear shocked in the slightest.
