Destined Entwining: Capturing My Devoted Beau

Chapter 57: Chapter 47: The World Changes Fast

Gregory Quinn stood in front of Building C at the residential area entrance, looking back at the towering floors, feeling sour and wanting to spit.

But remembering the time he had been fined five hundred dollars by the property management, he held back.

As he reached the entrance of the residential area, he unexpectedly saw Brooke Osborne.

She was also dragging a suitcase, her expression calm, walking alone.

Gregory Quinn sneered a few times and caught up, saying gloomily, ”Brooke Osborne, you’ve got some nerve! Partnering with others to mess with me, huh!”

”Just you wait! When I make a scene at your workplace, let’s see how long you can hold on to that civil servant position!”

Brooke Osborne calmly said, ”No need for that, I’ve already resigned and bought a ticket to leave River City today.”

Gregory Quinn was stunned for a moment, wanting to say more, when he heard Kenneth Osborne’s voice from behind.

”Sis! Sis! Wait up!”

Gregory Quinn didn’t dare to face Kenneth Osborne, hurriedly with his injured leg, he ran away.

Brooke Osborne turned around and saw Kenneth Osborne running over with Lawrence Winters.

She sighed, trying to show a smile on her face, and said to Kenneth Osborne and Lawrence Winters, ”Kenneth, Lawrence, don’t worry, I won’t do anything foolish anymore.”

Lawrence Winters saw Gregory Quinn had just left and didn’t dare to speak loudly, whispering instead, ”Sister Brooke, the money has been transferred to you...”

Nick Zeller had won fifty thousand from Gregory Quinn through a lawsuit and had transferred it all to Brooke Osborne to help her pay off her personal credit loans.

Of course, the other half of the contract that Brooke Osborne owed didn’t need to be paid back; Nick Zeller had already waived it for her.

Brooke Osborne felt very guilty and she wasn’t used to owing people such a big favor.

She said softly, ”I still owe you guys tens of thousands in VAT money, I won’t let you lose out.”

Kenneth Osborne quickly said, ”Sis, I’ve already transferred the tens of thousands to Uncle John. They helped us a lot; we certainly can’t let them pay on our behalf to seek justice.”

Brooke Osborne felt even more guilty, her eyes reddening, tears welling up, ”...But Kenneth, that’s money you’ve saved up for years, I’m your sister, I should be taking care of you, how can I let you help me pay my debts? Don’t worry, I still owe you money, and I absolutely won’t do anything foolish.”

Kenneth Osborne lowered his head, taking a deep breath, and said, ”...It’s fine, Sis, if you move to a different place, you’ll feel better. Don’t rush to pay back the money, I don’t have anything I need it for anyway.”

Brooke Osborne pressed her lips together, trying hard to smile, ”I know. I’ll work hard and won’t act so foolish anymore...”

Lawrence Winters watched the siblings say goodbye and couldn’t utter a word.

The two decided to see Brooke Osborne off to the airport, watching her plane take off before taking a cab back together.

The taxi stopped at the residential area entrance, and Kenneth Osborne and Lawrence Winters got out of the car.

Lawrence Winters had been deep in thought the whole way, feeling emotional.

Kenneth Osborne also had a lot on his mind, holding her hand, standing under the evergreen trees lining the pedestrian path, he said, ”Nora, I know this incident affected you a lot, but I hope you know not all men are as shameless as Gregory Quinn. Life is short, we need to cherish the people around us more. Nora, we...”

Before he finished, Lawrence Winters, thinking she understood him, nodded in agreement, solemnly saying, ”Yes, life is short, so men aren’t reliable. We should devote our limited life to making more money!”

Kenneth Osborne gave her a death stare: What the hell, more money!

Lawrence Winters smiled blissfully, turning around calmly, walking forward as if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders and filled with ambition.

Kenneth Osborne closed his eyes for a moment, deciding not to bring up the topic for now, casually changing the subject, he asked her, ”...Are you going to school for classes this year?”

Hearing this topic, Lawrence Winters’ energy from before instantly deflated, and she looked down, putting her hands into the paw-shaped pockets of her plush sweatshirt, and softly said, ”My mom insists I go.”

”Then let’s go together,” Kenneth Osborne stopped walking and looked at her, ”We’re originally from the same school, I’ll go book the plane tickets today.”

Lawrence Winters made a sound of assent, looking up and giving him a sweet smile.

The landscaping in Temple Court Residential Area was done very well, with many evergreen plants even in winter. As they walked along, the sun was shining brightly, it felt like walking in the warm breeze of early summer.

Kenneth Osborne was infected by her smile, his previously low spirits slightly improved, and he gently held her hand as they continued to walk forward together.

Soon, they encountered a group of residents going out from the residential area.

Chatting and laughing, people of all ages, it seemed like a family going to visit relatives.

Kenneth Osborne quickly put his arm around Lawrence Winters’ shoulder, guiding her to walk on his other side, shielding her from being bumped into by the group.

His unguarded action drew the attention of young girls in the group, shifting their gaze to Lawrence Winters again.

Someone whispered, ”...Who is that little girl? The one with really pale skin, a bit chubby in her puffy down jacket?”

”That’s Lawrence Winters, also known as Little Heavenly Master. She’s the most famous apprentice and niece of the Great Heavenly Master in our residential area.” The young girl seemed to know Lawrence Winters, starting to explain to her family.

An elderly woman in the group stared at Lawrence Winters for a while, surprised, she said, ”So that’s Lawrence Winters? The daughter of Gabrielle Winters, who got divorced, is it?”

”Oh? Auntie, you know their family?”

”Not exactly know, but used to live on the same street, I’m quite familiar with Gabrielle Winters’ parents.”

”Gabrielle Winters was quite famous, the first student in our city to get into a prestigious university in the Capital City, the pride of the Winters Family and also of our neighbors.”

”But unfortunately, after working in the big city for a few years after graduation, she came back with a child, heard she was dumped by a man...”

”Auntie, they’ve gotten a divorce, you know what a divorce is?”

”Isn’t a divorce just a woman being dumped by a man? If the man still wants her, what woman would get divorced?” The older woman pursed her lips, clearly unimpressed.

”... Auntie, I don’t agree with you. Maybe it was Ms. Winters who didn’t want her husband anymore?”

”Impossible! What woman wouldn’t want a man? It’s always the man who doesn’t want the woman!”

”Don’t argue with your aunt... Just agree with the elders a bit...” Someone quietly nudged the young girl.

The girl rolled her eyes and muttered under her breath, ”...Why do women make things difficult for each other? It’s you guys who spoil those lousy men to no end...”

The older woman, seeing her own family not backing her up, wanted to regain control, snorted, and said, ”You young people these days just marry and divorce as you please. I can’t control you.”

”But let me tell you, if a woman has kids, she should under no circumstances get divorced. Because if you get divorced, your children’s good luck will disappear!”

She spoke so loudly that even Lawrence Winters and Kenneth Osborne couldn’t pretend not to hear.

The two stopped in their tracks and looked over.

The family was extremely embarrassed, wanting to quickly pull their aunt away, but the woman was on a roll, laughing as she said, ”Look at that young girl, don’t let her current success fool you. She was famous for being unlucky as a child!”

”She’d trip at the doorstep and break a leg, choke on water in kindergarten and need emergency room care.”

”Whenever her mom took her out shopping, not once did her wallet avoid being stolen!”

”God knows how many times they reported it to the police!”

”Riding a long-distance bus with her mom, mid-trip the bus would either break down or encounter highway robbers, everyone on the bus experiencing misfortune!”

”Later, when her mom had to travel for work, she had no choice but to leave her with her grandparents.”

”And then, even though her grandparents had been in good health, within a year of living with her, they both passed away!”

”Everyone in the neighborhood knows that whoever gets close to her shares her bad luck.”

”When she was six and had to start school, all the city’s elementary schools refused to accept her.”

”It took her uncle stepping in and dropping money to get her into the city’s first elementary as a visiting student.”

”Auntie, you’re getting more and more outrageous. Isn’t elementary school supposed to take local students? What public school would dare refuse a student from their own district?”

”You just don’t get it, ten years ago, this city wasn’t so strict about local enrollment.”

”Getting into school was extremely difficult, and good elementary schools even required entrance exams.”

Ten years ago, River City didn’t have private elementary schools.

It sounds somewhat interesting?

Everyone curiously looked at Lawrence Winters.

Lawrence Winters smiled gracefully at them.

Kenneth Osborne’s face turned cold, and he held Lawrence Winters’ hand tightly, pulling her away with large strides.

The older woman lamented while slapping her thigh, ”Oh dear, that guy is so darn handsome! It’s such a pity he’s with that Winters girl! It’s bound to bring bad luck!”

”Auntie! That’s enough!” The young girl who had been sneaking glances at Kenneth Osborne and Lawrence Winters was furious, ”That’s all history now! How long has it been since you last came to the city?”

”Lawrence Winters is living large with her uncle, Great Heavenly Master Nick Zeller! Making tons of money!”

”Just look at the best duplex apartment in the best A building of this neighborhood, it’s theirs!”

”You can’t even buy it for millions now!”

”...What? Their family isn’t unlucky anymore? Since when?”

The older woman blinked her eyes in confusion, her wrinkles crinkling like a chrysanthemum.

”I’ve never seen them being unlucky.” The young girl snorted, ”I was in the same middle and high school as Lawrence Winters. She attended fewer classes but always had the top grades.”

”Later she even got into a prestigious university in the Capital City, working with her uncle doing feng shui consulting, living the good life. — If you keep saying these things, and Great Heavenly Master Nick Zeller finds out, he won’t be pleased!”

”Yes, yes, we’re all neighbors, let’s not bring this up anymore.”

The older woman looked up at the top floor of the A building across the street at the duplex apartment, blinking for quite some time.

It seemed as if she was saying that it wasn’t that she didn’t understand, it’s just that the world changes too fast.
