Armed Train in the Apocalypse

Chapter 140: Chapter 128: Close-Quarters Combat

The ring man habitually twisted his ring, hesitating, ”According to company rules, we can run now, right?”

The young man’s mouth twitched, ”Run? Where would we run to when the fight’s already broken out?”

”Maybe we should reveal our identity, since they did say life comes first when we set out.”

”I’m fine, but you, getting caught on your first mission, do you think you can continue being a collector?”

”...Maybe I’d get transferred, forget it, we better stay put. If we get hit by stray bullets, we won’t even have the chance to transfer.”

Just as the two were discussing, the train door opened.

Seeing that the outside situation wasn’t too dangerous for the moment, some bold ones and those seeking fortune rushed out.

At first, it was just a few dozen people.

But with more than 1,500 people on the train, following those few leaders, over 800 more opportunists decided to join in.

Some smart ones decided to stay on the train, looking for a chance.

Soon, those who got off first picked up old rifles from the Servant Army, and those remaining on the train couldn’t sit still anymore, and another batch went down.

Finally, there were just over 500 true cowards left.

The two collectors naturally wouldn’t get off; they weren’t planning on being any kind of leaders.

They were just here to gather some data and head back.

Who wants to risk their life?

The ring man leaned against the window and watched for a while, clicking his tongue, ”The Steel Council is quite resourceful, having a small team of over twenty Evolvers, all well-trained soldiers, with several profession-graded among them, a Tier One ’Firepower Hand,’ Tier One ’Doctor,’ Tier One ’Sentinel,’ but why are they all from the gunfire series?”

The young man also peered over by the window, while activating an ability to cloak their presence, said, ”It’s cheap; besides them, who could sell full sets of profession potions so cheaply before the apocalypse?”

The ring man was momentarily surprised, ”How do you know more than I do?”

”After all, I’ve completed one more mission than you.”

”Oh, but isn’t the company afraid of being captured and tortured for information?”

The young man thought for a moment and said, ”That’s not a worry.”

The ring man looked surprised, ”Why?”

The young man gave him a meaningful look, ”Where do you think I heard these things from?”

”Your partner told you?”

”You could say that, to be precise, he feared being tortured and volunteered the information; I was beside him listening.”

”...And then what?”

”He got transferred anyway. Actually, the other side didn’t want to know that much, but he spilled too much.”

Ring man: ”...”

”Don’t worry, although the company is wealthy, the cost to train a Tier One Evolver isn’t small; they wouldn’t easily dispose of us.”

The two fell silent for a moment as the battle outside grew more chaotic.

The Steel Council fought with the armored train, Servant Soldiers fought zombies and Evolution Beasts, passengers fought Servant Soldiers and Evolution Beasts.

Zhang Tie led elite soldiers to press towards the direction of the armored train under the cover of chaos.

They moved like agile monkeys darting through buildings.

Very faint light blue beams occasionally flashed in the sky, suppressing the enemy snipers from showing their heads.

Stray bullets and rubble flew around, the howls and wails of corpses rose and fell.

Everyone fought desperately, except the Evolvers used innovative methods, the ordinary people’s methods were outdated, He Jie’s approach was brutal.

No one had seen such a chaotic battle.

The ring man couldn’t help but ask, ”The company pays us a salary and here we are chatting about gossip; isn’t that not quite right?”

”Wasn’t it because you like watching the excitement that your supervisor chose you?”

”Eh? Then why you?”

”I like watching excitement from the corners.”

”...True, we’re earning our wage, but I’m concerned about which side will ultimately win.”

”What do you think?”

The young man threw the question back.

The ring man pondered for a while, ”The Steel Council, although they appear a bit battered, their main Evolvers have nearly zero losses till now, and their tactics are reasonable. The gunfire series of Evolvers is known for early strength.”

”Higher-ups speculate that the armored train has a big backer too, not to mention there are several abilities users whose powers are still unclear.”

”His frequently mission-filling teams are mere makeshift arrangements with no real cooperation system, not even one Tier One Evolver. Even their points exchange system looks like something an ordinary person came up with. Many exchange ratios are off; if anyone from the company’s sales department were around, they’d topple him easily. I doubt the armored train is a big power, or maybe only the train captain is from a big company and borrowed some ideas, managing it too crudely, like a makeshift band.”

Speaking analytically, the ring man looked serious.

A few sentences and he’d laid bare the foundations of the armored train.

”What you said makes sense, but I feel this battle may not end the way you think.”

”Why do you say that?”

”Intuition!”

”You’re not into combat professions; what intuition would you have?”

...

Zhang Tie exhaled, took an observation ball from his tactical pocket, connected it to the surveillance screen, and then threw it out.

The ball hovered in mid-air, the two cameras scanning in a cross pattern, quickly observing the battlefield situation, and then transmitting the information back to the screen via wiring.

Seeing that the sniper targets on the train were still not him, and that bastard He Jie was still hunting a few Night Demons rushing at the train, he was relieved.

He rolled out of cover, grabbed the observation ball, and stuffed it back in his pocket.

Holding a light machine gun, he quickly ran forward.

Even if no one noticed him, he still executed the tactical movements to the utmost standard.

A few breaths later.

Zhang Tie hid by a tiled wall of a guardhouse.

Now he was less than 300 meters from the railway track.

For an Evolver, 300 meters was just a sprint.

Standing behind cover, he quickly adjusted his breathing.

Soon, he saw the figures of his troops from various positions, giving a few hand signals, Zhang Tie counted down three numbers in his mind and burst out.

In an instant, the whole person was like a hunting cheetah on the African savannah, all the muscles in his body were mobilized to the extreme at that moment.

You could even see the bulging veins on his neck and his wildly ticking muscles.

Other Tier One ’Sentinels,’ or assault troops, charged at different angles.

What responded faster than their bodies were the grenades mounted on assault rifles, almost launched the instant they turned.

”Boom boom boom—”

Explosions erupted abruptly on the train’s body.

Violent and brief tremors came from within the train, a crashing a breaking sound echoed through the carriage.
