Chapter 2040: Chapter 2041: Death Notice

”Don’t worry about my problems anymore, I’ve accepted my fate. If only you had come earlier... never mind. To find someone to talk to in the last moments of my life, that’s already a blessing.” Reeves sighed lightly, his gaze towards Angel a bit dim.

If Angel could have come sooner, maybe he could have used some means to take over his body. But now, it’s too late. He knows his own body very well, it’s already in the final stages of assimilation, and even a Legendary Wizard’s arrival would be powerless to save him.

Perhaps only those great beings who create miracles could turn decay into wonder. However, with his humble status, how could he have any hope of catching the eye of those miracle-makers?

So, Reeves has accepted his fate.

Hearing Reeves’s long sigh, Angel’s heart also felt slightly heavy. He could see some negative thoughts hidden in Reeves’s eyes, but he also understood that Reeves was speaking the truth now.

Angel had a deep understanding of the sadness and evil in human nature, so he didn’t feel that Reeves’s dark thoughts were any big deal. If it were he himself, he might have similar thoughts.

At least for now, Reeves suppressed his wavering thoughts and didn’t, like some lunatics, drag the whole world into madness with him even knowing he was going to die. From this perspective, Reeves was probably a rational White Wizard in the past.

After a moment of sorrow, Reeves returned to rationality. His life energy was continuously being drained by the Viridian Mist, and there was no time to waste on sentimental emotions.

”You wanted to know the secret of this ruin and what I experienced here, right? I can tell you, but before that, I hope you can agree to one condition.” Reeves said, looking towards Angel, who didn’t seem inclined to follow up on his words. Not feeling annoyed, Reeves proactively said, ”Don’t worry, it’s just a small request.”

”I hope that after you leave here, you can help me pass on a message to someone. This message will not contain important information or affect you, and you can even do it anonymously.”

”It’s not a threat, nor a transaction. It’s a request free from any constraints... because I don’t think you’ll actually have a chance to leave here. But still, there’s a sliver of hope, so I want to give it a try.”

Angel and Reeves were, after all, strangers, so when Reeves stated his condition, Angel was very cautious, even if he wanted to get information from him.

However, Reeves’s words were very sincere and removed many potential constraints that could bring harm, so Angel thought for a moment and nodded, ”What message do you want to convey? To whom?”

”A farewell letter, I suppose it’s my last words. To a councilor of the City of Truth, Adelaide.”

Angel: ”It seems Lady Blackjestor is important to you.”

Reeves nodded a little dimly, ”She... is important to me.”

Reeves didn’t explain his relationship with Adelaide, but from the emotions he emitted, Angel could sense some clues. Perhaps Reeves and that council member of the Council of Truth shared some intimate memories?

”Alright, if I can leave here, I will let her know.” Angel agreed, ”Besides her, is there anyone else you want to send a message to? For example, the Vansel family?”

A complex emotion flickered in Reeves’s eyes; there was regret and helplessness, anger and bitterness. Finally, he spoke in a bitter voice, ”If you really get out, and you have time, just send word of my death to them. If you don’t have time, it’s okay too...”

Angel didn’t know what was on Reeves’s mind at that moment. Perhaps it was guilt for failing to achieve family glory, or maybe it was anger over losing his freedom, bearing the family’s burdens all his life, only to end up like this.

But no matter what it was, it would all dissipate with Reeves’s death.

”I’ll find a way to inform the Vansel family. Now, it’s your turn to tell me, what secrets does this ruin hold?”

...

An hour later, Angel looked at Reeves in front of him, who had now completely transformed.

Previously, although his body was more than half assimilated with mushrooms, from the parts that hadn’t been assimilated, one could see that Reeves was a rather handsome young man.

But now, all the energy in Reeves’s body had been nearly drained by the Mianuan larvae, leaving him skin and bones.

”...Thank you.” Reeves could no longer see Angel’s figure, and his final words were nearly as soft as a breeze, but he still tried his best to express his last thoughts: ”May you... escape this hell and find peace.”

Angel gave Reeves a deep look: ”...That is my wish too.”

As his words fell, the last embers of Reeves’s life burned out, and he finally closed his eyes.

With a burst of scorching flames, the giant mushroom in front of him began to slowly transform into sparks and disappeared, finally turning into ashes carrying the peculiar fragrance of fungi.

Fire Elemental wizards often say: Fire is my life, even if it burns the entire world, I will be reborn in the raging flames.

Perhaps a Fire Elemental wizard who has found the truth of reality can achieve this, but for ordinary wizards, it is just a jest.

With the flames, Reeves disappeared and died completely.

Angel chose not to leave, but to quietly watch the pile of ashes still diffusing Viridian Mist.

Before long, a spiritual body emitting a faint glow began to slowly manifest from the ashes.

This spiritual body was a nascent Undead, undoubtedly Reeves’s soul.

Angel didn’t leave, choosing to wait here, wanting to see what changes would occur to a soul after dying under the Mianuan. Could it really not be saved as Reeves said?

Angel waited for the full form of the Undead.

After about a minute, the Undead finally condensed back into the human form he held before his death. Upon seeing the human-shaped soul before him, Angel’s expression turned slightly peculiar.

Generally, the shape of a soul matches the form before death, though occasionally a strong will can influence its form, causing some changes: for instance, if an old person has a strong longing for their youthful appearance before dying, it might affect the soul’s form, resulting in a younger appearance afterwards, which is quite possible.

But no matter what, ultimately the soul is still human.

However, Reeves’s soul turned out peculiar. It looked human, but there were several mushrooms growing on his body.

For instance, atop his head was a large green mushroom, looking as though he wore a green cap. There were also two mushrooms on his chest. A mushroom grew on the back of his left hand.

Moreover, although his soul had successfully condensed, the spiritual body was still in constant flux, as if there were more mushrooms hidden within it, eager to break free and grow anew.
