The Legendary Method Actor

Andrade’s declaration of giving Ray temporary jurisdiction and deadline hung in the air.

”Understood.”

Ray replied calmly..

”Seven hours, Ray. Do not waste them.”

Andrade whispered, turning on her heel.

The ticking clock had started. He had seven hours to solve an impossible murder, catch an invisible assassin, and save Rina’s life.

The heavy door of the wine cellar clicked shut with a resounding thud, cutting off the tense standoff in the corridor. The heavy, muffled presence of Captain Svane standing guard outside, flanked by Master Alvon’s furious security detail, was the only remaining tether to the political firestorm raging just beyond the walls.

Inside the cellar, the silence was absolute. The damp, metallic tang of blood hung heavy in the air, mixing with the scent of aged oak and dust.

Ray took a slow, centering breath, letting the icy, aggressive posture he had used to negotiate with Headmaster Andrade bleed away. The board was set. The terms were struck. He had exactly seven hours until sunrise to find the killer, or Rina would take the fall for the crime.

Before he could even begin to process the crime scene, Ray turned his attention to his attendant.

Rina was kneeling on the cold stone floor, shivering violently. She was staring blankly at her own hands, which were coated to the elbows in Warren Ramada’s blood. Her breath hitched in shallow, panicked gasps, her mind clearly trapped in the traumatic loop of finding a friend bleeding out in the dark.

Ray knew he needed her sharp. She was his only witness, and her memory of the last couple of hours was the only compass he had.

He stepped close to her, ignoring the blood soaking into the hem of her ruined dress, and knelt down so he was directly in her line of sight.

”Rina. Look at me.”

Ray said gently.

She flinched, her wide, terrified eyes slowly rising to meet his.

Ray initiated a Partial Immersion with the World-Weary Healer, activating the ‘Calming Presence’ skill. A wave of warm, stabilizing energy radiated from him, washing over the damp cellar. It was subtle, designed not to alter a mind, but to soothe an erratic nervous system.

Simultaneously, a faint, golden resonance pulsed through the tether connecting their minds. Because Ray and Rina were now entirely united in a singular, desperate goal, finding the truth and clearing her name, Ray’s innate skill, ‘Shared Resolve’, was passively activated.

Rina physically gasped as a sudden fortification reinforced her mental defenses. The suffocating panic in her chest receded, replaced by a quiet, determined clarity borrowed directly from Ray’s own unshakable willpower. Her shivering lessened.

”I’m here, but I need you to gather yourself. Remember the breathing technique I imparted to you. I need you to meditate to ground your mind.”

Ray told her, his voice steady.

Rina swallowed hard, looking from her bloodstained hands back to Ray. She gave a single, jerky nod. She closed her eyes as she initiated the ‘Meditative Stillness’ skill she had received from Ray. She forced her shoulders to drop. She began to draw in long, measured breaths, actively cycling her mana to purge the adrenaline spiking through her veins.

”Keep breathing, Rina. Let the stillness settle your heart and mind.”

Ray whispered, standing back up.

With his attendant actively meditating to stabilize her shock, Ray turned his attention back to the cellar. He had a murder to solve.

He initiated a Concurrent Partial Immersion and layered in the Gritty Detective and activated its ‘Observation’ skill.

The dim wine cellar washed out in Ray’s vision. The flickering light of the luminescent moss was replaced by a high-contrast, clinical schematic. Potential evidence glowed with a faint, phantom highlight. He bypassed the obvious, massive pool of blood spreading around Warren’s caved-in skull and began to sweep the perimeter.

His eyes darted over the pristine wine racks, the stacked crates, and the smooth stone floor.

Then, he stopped.

Hidden in a dusty, waist-high oak tasting barrel tucked in the corner of the cellar, Ray spotted an anomaly. Sitting on the flat top were two crystal wine goblets. They were placed slightly out of alignment, separated from a pristine, unused set of tasting glasses resting on a silver tray nearby.

Ray approached the barrel, leaning in close without touching the glass. Through the lens of the Gritty Detective, the microscopic details blossomed. Both glasses had faint, overlapping lip smudges on their crystal rims. They had been used and hastily placed back.

Ray carefully leaned his face over the first glass, inhaling gently through his nose. It smelled of rich berries, oak, and ancient earth, a remarkably aged, high-tier vintage wine.

He moved to the second glass. He inhaled again.

Ray’s eyes narrowed to slits. Beneath the heavy aroma of the wine, his heightened senses detected a faint, sickeningly sweet, highly acidic chemical odor. It smelled like crushed lotus and burnt sugar. It was the exact same scent he had detected lingering on Warren Ramada’s lips during his initial examination.

In the Ambient Presence of his mind, the committee immediately convened around the new evidence.

Detective: ”Well, look at that. This wasn’t an ambush in the dark. Our Head Butler didn’t walk down here and get jumped by a stranger hiding in the shadows. He knew his killer. He was comfortable enough with them to share a private drink.”

Courtier: ”An interesting new detail. But why? Why share a drink here on his busiest night? Was it a manipulative gesture by the killer to lower Warren’s guard after delivering distressing news? Or perhaps a toast to a finalized, deadly deal?”

Conman: ”Or maybe the killer just played the role of a sympathetic ear. Someone who knew Warren was stressed and offered him a quick liquid courage before stabbing him in the back. Classic misdirection.”

Detective: ”Whatever the reason, the killer betrayed that trust. They spiked the second glass with the paralytic. Warren drank it. The moment his vision blurred and his motor functions failed, the killer stepped in and struck the fatal blow to his skull with the missing heavy weapon.”

Scholar: ”And let us not ignore the geographical calculation of the crime. Why the wine cellar? Did the killer select this specific location to serve as a perfect execution chamber? Was this premeditated?”

The logic was undeniable. The murder was a calculated, intimate betrayal.

He turned back to Rina. She had opened her eyes. Her posture was still rigid, and her face was pale, but the hysterical panic was gone. The Meditative Stillness skill had done its job; she was lucid and focused.

Ray walked over and crouched beside her.

”Are you with me, Rina?”

”I am, Young Master.”

She replied, her voice trembling only slightly.

”Good. Because the clock is ticking, and I need to know exactly how we got here?”

Ray said, his tone professional and encouraging.

”I need you to retrace your exact steps from the moment you separated from us upon our arrival at the gala upstairs. Leave nothing out.”

Rina took a deep breath, looking at the floor as she meticulously reconstructed her evening.

”When I left the group earlier, I went straight to the staff prep areas and the kitchens in the eastern wing. I wanted to find Mr. Ramada. Over the past year, through our interaction, we had actually grown quite close.”

Rina explained

”Because he confided in you about Lady Jane Starr’s illness, and you gave him the Moonpetal tea recipe.”

Ray said, filling in the details.

Rina was surprised Ray knew that detail as she nodded.

”Yes. He was very grateful about it.”

Rina said as a sad, nostalgic smile briefly touched her lips.

“When I found him in the kitchen tonight, he was delighted to see me. I offered my services to help manage the workload, as the catering demands for the gala were immense. He graciously accepted and asked me to assist the chefs with the plating of the food.”

Rina said as she looked at Warren’s body.

”How was his demeanor?”

Ray asked.

”Immaculate, as always, he was commanding the kitchen with absolute precision. He was stressed, certainly, but perfectly in control. Everything was fine.”

Rina noted as she turned and looked at Ray.

”When did that change?”

Rina’s brow furrowed as she recalled the exact moment.

”Later in the evening. The main course had just been served upstairs. Mr. Ramada came over to my station to check on my progress. While we were speaking, a junior staffer approached him.”

Ray’s eyes sharpened.

”A junior staffer. Was it Hanna?”

Rina shook her head definitively.

”No, Young Master. I know Hanna. I have interacted with her before. This was a different staffer. A young man. He looked nervous.”

”What did he say?”

”He delivered a simple message, he told Mr. Ramada that someone was asking to meet with him privately. Mr. Ramada nodded, and told the young man to bring this guest to his personal office on the second floor.”

Rina recounted.

”And then?”

”Mr. Ramada excused himself. He was gone for perhaps twenty minutes. When he returned to the kitchen... he was a completely different person. His composure was fractured. His hands were trembling slightly. He looked distraught.”

Rina said, her voice dropping to a whisper as the memory darkened.

”Did you ask him what was wrong?”

Ray pressed.

”Immediately.”

Rina confirmed.

”But he forced a terribly tight smile. He completely brushed off my concern and insisted everything was fine. He then told me that he needed to personally go down to the cellar to fetch more wines to ensure the gala’s wine continued to flow.”

”What happens next?”

Ray asked.

”Time passed. About thirty minutes, maybe more. When he didn’t return, I grew worried. The kitchen was busy, a staffer just reported that the wines were out. So I slipped away to come down here to find out why Warren had not returned with the wines, I thought he might have needed help carrying the bottles. I walked down the servant corridors. I did not encounter anyone along the way.”

Rina said as she looked down at the blood on the floor.

”When you reached the cellar, what was the state of the door?”

Ray asked, needing to confirm his own timeline.

”It was closed. I knocked and called out, but there was no response. So I decided to check the handle of the door. I expected it to be locked... but it wasn’t. The door simply opened.”

Rina swallowed a dry sob.

”And that is when I saw him bleeding on the floor. In my absolute panic, my first thought was you, Ray. I just... thought of you!”

Ray stood up, his mind snapping the pieces of the timeline together into a cohesive, deadly sequence.

Warren was summoned to a meeting in his office. There, he learned something or met someone that shattered his composure. Distraught, he still continued to work; he decided to get some more wine and along the way; he might have been intercepted by someone he knew and trusted. They may have gone together to the wine cellar to share a glass of wine and talk. The killer spiked the drink, waited for the Head Butler to lose his motor functions, and then executed him with a massive strike to the skull. The killer left the body and took the missing murder weapon with him or her. If Rina did not encounter anyone along the way how did Hanna know that something happened in the wine cellar that she proceeded to inform Lady Jane right away.

Ray had formulated an initial timeline of events. He looked at his pocket watch. He had just under seven hours.

”We have two immediate leads.”

Ray announced, his voice cold and resolute. He looked down at Rina, offering her a hand to help her up from the bloody floor.

”We need to find the unknown staffer who delivered the initial message to Warren in the kitchen. And we need to find Hanna, the girl who miraculously knew a murder had occurred down here before anyone else did.”

Rina took his hand, her grip trembling but firm as she stood up.

”We are going to clear your name, Rina,”

Ray promised, his golden-flecked eyes burning with absolute certainty.

”And we are going to make whoever did this regret the day they messed with the people I care about.”
