The Legendary Method Actor

One week had passed since the chaotic, triumphant celebrations of the Main Qualifiers. The atmosphere across Solhaven Academy was still buzzing with manic energy, the student body obsessively dissecting every duel, every upset, and every spell cast during the tournament. But the loudest whispers, the ones that echoed through the dining halls and the grand courtyards, were about him.

Ray Croft, the ”Artificer,” the boy who had dominated the Strategic War-Gaming event and orchestrated a flawless hostile takeover. He had swallowed the board whole, humiliating the brightest College of Statecraft prodigies on their own turf.

Ray ignored the stares as he arrived at the building of the College of Statecraft. He wore his crisp, midnight-blue coat, his silver 1st-Circle Novice pin glinting in the morning sun. He was not heading toward the classroom for a lecture today. He was heading straight toward the Royal Archives which was located in the College of Statecraft.

Waiting for him at the grand entrance of the administrative wing was Master Cedric Varkas, the Head of the College of Statecraft.

Cedric was a man who usually projected an aura of unshakeable, aristocratic control. Today, however, his demeanor was visibly frosty, his posture stiff as a board. Cedric’s professional pride had been deeply wounded. A thirteen-year-old from the College of Arcanum had walked into his domain and systematically dismantled his finest future strategist and magistrates. But the rules of the tournament were absolute, and Cedric was bound by them to grant Ray his promised prize.

”Novice Croft.”

Cedric greeted, his voice tight, lacking any of the warmth usually afforded to a tournament champion.

”Master Varkas, I appreciate you taking the time to facilitate my reward.”

Ray replied, as he gave a polite bow.

Cedric gave a curt nod and turned on his heel.

”Follow me. We have quite a way to go.”

Cedric led Ray past the bustling lecture halls and down into the restricted, subterranean levels beneath the College of Statecraft. As they descended, the ambient noise of the academy faded, replaced by the heavy, silent hum of massive magical wards. The air grew cooler, smelling of dry stone, ozone, and ancient parchment.

”What you are about to enter is one of the many Eldorian Depositories.”

Master Cedric lectured, his tone condescending, clearly eager to remind Ray of his place.

”Though among the senior faculty, it is often referred to as the Statecraft Annex. It is a Tier-3 Restricted Educational and Geopolitical Backup facility.”

They arrived at a set of massive, iron-reinforced double doors covered in complex, glowing runic arrays.

”Its primary purpose is to act as a localized redundancy vault. It was established centuries ago by the Crown of Eldoria to ensure that the foundational knowledge, geographical surveys, and historical blueprints of the Kingdom survive in the event of a catastrophic, civilization-ending attack on the Capital of Luminis. The knowledge within is classified.”

Cedric continued, turning to face Ray,

Ray took out his Tier-3 brass key-card he had won from his breast pocket. He held it out.

Cedric didn’t take it. Instead, he stepped closer, his eyes narrowing.

”You have exactly six hours, Novice Croft. The parameters of your prize grant you access, not ownership. There are blank parchments that you can use to write information. You are not to damage a single scrap of parchment. The vault is heavily warded with lethal containment sigils against theft. If you attempt to smuggle a document out, the wards will incinerate the paper and severely maim you in the process.”

”I understand perfectly, Master Varkas, I merely wish to satiate my academic curiosity.”

Ray said smoothly.

Cedric scoffed softly, pressing his own hand to the center of the runic array. The heavy iron doors clicked and groaned, swinging open to reveal a cavernous, dimly lit archive stretching deep into the bedrock. Floor-to-ceiling mahogany shelves held thousands of scrolls, heavy leather-bound tomes, and sealed map cylinders.

”Your time begins now.”

Cedric said, stepping aside.

Ray walked into the silent, massive archive. The heavy iron doors clicked shut behind him with a definitive thud, the locking mechanisms grinding into place. He was entirely alone, surrounded by the accumulated secrets of the Kingdom of Eldoria.

Ray stood in the center of the room, taking a slow, deep breath. His internal committee, the Ambient Presence of his archetypes convened instantly in the quiet of his mind.

Scribe: “Lethal containment sigils, he says, Let us see the brushwork of the masters.”

The Arcane Scribe murmured, a tone of obsessive, reverent curiosity bleeding into Ray’s thoughts.

Ray blinked, he initiated Partial Immersion and activated the Arcane Scribe’s ‘Runic Sight’ skill.

The cavern suddenly ignited in his vision. A staggering, complex web of crimson and gold magical pathways pulsed across the floor, crawling up the walls and weaving intricately around every mahogany bookshelf. Instantly, the intuitive understanding of the Arcane Scribe’s ‘Runic Architect’ passive skill engaged, unspooling the logic of the layered schematics in his mind.

Scribe: ”Interesting... A localized thermal-detonation matrix woven seamlessly into an independent spatial-lock ward. If unauthorized parchment crosses the threshold, the array doesn’t just burn the paper; it violently redirects the thermal backlash directly into the thief’s center of mass. Meticulous, elegant craftsmanship.”

Conman: ”Yeah, yeah, appreciate the deadly art later! Instead look at this spread! The motherlode! A literal vault of state secrets! Cedric said we can’t take the paper, but he didn’t say we couldn’t take the data! Let’s rob them blind!”

Courtier: ”Focus. We are not here to browse randomly. We have specific, actionable intelligence gaps regarding the Argent Hand, the Patron in the Royal Court, and the logistics of the Null-Alloy smuggling operation. We must be methodical.”

Ray agreed. He knew Partial Immersion wouldn’t be fast enough to process this volume of data within a six-hour window. He needed raw, unfiltered processing power. He closed his eyes and focused his will.

System, initiate Full Immersion: The Eccentric Scholar.

The transition was a violent, hydraulic yank. Ray felt his primary consciousness pulled backward through the heavy velvet curtain of his mind. He stepped into the dimly lit wings of his Ambient Presence, he took a seat in the now empty chair of the Eccentric Scholar.

.

Back in the archives, the transformation was instant. Ray’s posture lost its calm composure. His shoulders hunched slightly, his fingers began to twitch with a frantic, manic energy, and his eyes snapped open, wide and blazing with absolute academic glee. The Eccentric Scholar’s personality took over entirely.

He looked around the highly restricted Royal Archives, pushing an imaginary pair of spectacles up the bridge of his nose. He didn’t see a privilege; he saw an all-you-can-eat buffet of raw data, and he was starving.

Scholar: ”Fascinating! The cataloging system is utterly archaic, based on the pre-calamity municipal index! Illogical, but manageable. We must establish a baseline. Initiating data gathering!”

The Eccentric Scholar activated the High-Speed Reading & Memorization skill.

Ray’s physical body sprang into motion. He darted to the nearest shelf, his hands becoming an absolute blur. He began unrolling scrolls, scanning massive ledgers, and unfolding ancient maps at a terrifying, inhuman speed. His eyes darted back and forth across the parchment, treating his brain like a massive, empty hard drive. He didn’t read the words; he inhaled them.

Guided by Ray’s overarching goals from the Ambient Presence, the Eccentric Scholar began connecting the disparate data points with using his ‘Deductive Reasoning’ skill.

”First objective: Logistics and the Smuggling Network. Cross-referencing required.”

The Eccentric Scholar murmured as he mentally pulled up the logistical data he had archived from Titus Thorne’s black ledger, the mass refinement and transportation schedules of Null-Alloy originating from the hidden Void Ore motherlode beneath Iron-Wake. Some of the shipments were destined for the Northern Citadel, where Ray’s brother, Corbin, was stationed under the command of the compromised Viscount Morales.

”Data conflict! The Royal Army’s standard patrol routes cover the above-ground highways between Iron-Wake and the North. It is mathematically improbable that shipments of that massive tonnage could bypass all checkpoints without detection. Conclusion: They are not only using the known routes.”

Ray’s blurring hands pulled a series of restricted geographical and architectural surveys from the Third Era. He overlaid the data in his mind.

”Ah! There it is! A subterranean anomaly!”

He unrolled an ancient, pre-Eldorian map. It detailed a vast, forgotten network of subterranean aqueducts and dried-out trade tunnels built by the First Kingdom.

”The ’SecretRoads.’ A perfectly preserved series of underground highway systems. A caravan can easily go to these tunnels and come out on the other side bypassing the check points. It connects to different locations of the Eldorian Kingdom. The Argent Hand caravan only shows a fraction of the whole shipment when they arrive and bribe the check points while the majority are being driven right under their boots!”

[DATA ACQUIRED: THE SECRET ROADS (SMUGGLING ROUTE).]

Ray’s physical body didn’t pause. He dropped the map and sprinted to the next aisle, diving into the geopolitical and property records of the capital city.

”Second objective: Identifying the Shadow Patron. We require a geographical footprint.”

Ray needed to find the highly influential figure embedded deep within the Royal Court, the traitor powerful enough to blindfold the King’s inspectors and facilitate the Argent Hand’s spread of its web in the kingdom.
