The Legendary Method Actor

Down in the center of the grand arena, Bruce Doyle’s floating platform descended closer to the sands, his burgundy suit catching the bright afternoon sun.

”People of Solhaven!”

Bruce roared, spreading his arms wide as the amplification crystal caught his voice.

”The first two groups have had their fun! They have shown their promise! But the time for potential is over! It is time for absolute mastery! Welcome to the Quarterfinals of the Third Level Groups!”

The stadium did not just cheer; it vibrated. The Third Level Groups were comprised of Rank-3, 3rd-Circle and Tier-3 combatants, the elites of the academy, the squad leaders, and the commissioned officers.

”Now, pay attention to the brackets, folks!”

Bruce announced, pointing up at the massive illusory screens.

”We have four combatants remaining in this block. Let the Scrying Panes decide our first semi-finalist!”

Bruce announced as the crowd roared their approval at the promise of back-to-back fights.

Whir. Whir. Whir.

DING!

Pahn Su Lu.

DING!

Sergei Guntram.

”What a spectacular opening draw!”

Bruce hyped, pacing his platform.

”A Rank-3 Silver Fist from the minor College of Empty Hand (Valor), we have the unstoppable fist of Pahn Su Lu! And facing him a Rank-3 Silver Aegis from the College of Valor, the teleporting terror, Sergei Guntram! Let the combatants enter!”

The southern gate opened, and Pahn Su Lu walked out onto the blistering sand. He wore no armor, dressed only in a lightweight, frictionless monastic gi. He was completely barefoot. His hands and forearms were wrapped tightly in heavy linen woven with conductive silver thread. He walked with a terrifyingly serene stillness, his breathing so perfectly regulated his chest barely seemed to rise.

From the northern gate, the air itself seemed to crackle with kinetic energy.

Sergei Guntram strode onto the field. He did not look like a standard, lumbering Aegis. He wore specialized Silver Aegis half-plate, heavily armored over his vitals, but leaving his joints completely articulated for maximum agility. In his right hand, he held a perfectly balanced Officer’s Broadsword. Strapped to his left arm was his ”Breach-Wall,” a medium-sized heater shield with a uniquely angled, heavily reinforced central boss designed specifically for smashing skulls.

Sergei stopped ten yards from Pahn. He cracked his neck loudly, rolling his shoulders, and let out a booming, aggressive laugh.

”You come to fight a Silver Aegis with bare hands?”

Sergei said, his voice thick with a heavy, rolling accent. He grinned widely, exuding absolute, unshakeable confidence.

”Ha! You are brave, little Silver Fist, but you are foolish! Where I grew up in Morkava, we do not punch steel! In Morkava, we let steel punch you!”

Pahn Su Lu did not smile. He simply shifted his right foot back, lowering his center of gravity into a flawless, grounded stance, his Aura of the Silver Fist flaring to life beneath his skin.

”Let the match... BEGIN!” Bruce bellowed.

The magical bell tolled.

Sergei Guntram did not charge. He didn’t even take a step forward. He simply channeled a violent surge of mana, weaving a rapid somatic gesture with his shield hand.

”Transilio!”

He cast 2nd-Circle spell: Tactical Shift.

CRACK.

With the sound of violently displaced air, the Silver Aegis instantly vanished.

He didn’t reappear in front of Pahn. Sergei materialized thirty feet away, directly in Pahn’s blind spot, already in mid-motion. It was the terrifying Blink-Bash. Using the momentum of his sudden spatial displacement, Sergei drove the heavy steel boss of his heater shield directly toward the back of Pahn’s skull.

Any normal combatant would have been instantly concussed and eliminated. But Pahn’s internal aura pushed his reflexes to the absolute border of precognition.

Feeling the shift in air pressure a microsecond before the shield arrived, Pahn ducked. He didn’t scramble; he simply dropped his center of gravity by a fraction of an inch. The heavy steel boss clipped the top of his hair, the sheer kinetic force of the missed bash carving a deep trench into the sand where Pahn’s head had been a moment before.

Sergei’s eyes widened in genuine surprise, but his grin only grew more feral.

”Ah! You are fast!”

Sergei laughed, immediately weaving a complex somatic gesture with his sword hand, his mana flaring brightly.

”But in Morkava, target does not stand still! Target runs so hunter gets good workout!”

”Phantasma!”

Sergei cast the 2nd-Circle spell: Phantasmal Guard.

Instantly, three illusory duplicates of the Knight-Captain flared into existence, mirroring his exact stance perfectly. Without pausing for breath, Sergei slammed the hilt of his sword against his breastplate, forcing his mana core into a dangerous overdrive.

”Celeritas!”

He supercharged his own nervous system, casting the 3rd-Circle spell: Accelerate.

The arena dissolved into a chaotic, terrifying blur.

Moving at double speed, the four identical Knights of Morkava bounded across the sand. Sergei was like an Arcane Vanguard; he didn’t just teleport to close the gap, he teleported to maintain an inescapable, suffocating pressure.

CRACK.

He vanished, appearing above Pahn for a plunging strike. Pahn rolled.

CRACK.

He vanished, appearing to Pahn’s left, swinging a horizontal cleave. Pahn used Slipstream Dash to blur out of range.

”You run well!”

Sergei’s voice echoed from three different directions at once.

”But Morkava steel is very patient!”

In the participant’s box, Ray leaned his elbows on the railing, his eyes darting to track the spatial tears. It was an incredible display of high-mobility melee, but within his mind, his archetypes were already dissecting the fatal flaw in the Silver Aegis’s offensive strategy.

Commander: ”A flashy blitz, but terrible logistics. You don’t sprint a heavy cavalry unit without checking the supply lines. The boy is redlining his own engine. He’s trying to force a total rout before his tank runs dry.”

Scholar: ”Fascinating, but mathematically suicidal! Sustaining three simultaneous Phantasmal constructs while repeatedly fracturing local space-time with Tactical Shift? And a 3rd-Circle Accelerate on top of it? His mana core must be absolutely screaming!”

Weaver: ”It lacks elegance. All this frantic teleporting is just the flailing of a man desperate to land a blow before his own exhaustion kills him. He’s trying to drown the Silver Fist in volume because he lacks the precision to actually hit him.”

Ray let the internal voices fade, watching Sergei teleport for the fifth time in under a minute. The archetypes were right; the Silver Aegis was burning way too hot.

Down on the sands, Pahn Su Lu had realized the exact same thing.

Pahn remained perfectly silent, his face an emotionless mask as he slipped, ducked, and weaved through the hurricane of teleporting steel. He wasn’t trying to hit Sergei. He was letting the Silver Aegis exhaust himself.

Frustrated by his inability to land a solid blow, Sergei pushed his speed to the absolute limit. He materialized directly in front of Pahn, sliding two fingers up the flat of his weapon and channeling dense kinetic mana into the steel.

”Acuo!”

He cast the 2nd-Circle spell: Enchanted Blade.

His broadsword glowed with a blinding, supernatural sharpness as he unleashed a massive, sweeping diagonal slash designed to cut the Silver Fist in half.

Pahn couldn’t dodge it; the angle was too wide.

Instead, Pahn stepped into the swing. His silver-threaded wraps flared with a blinding, concentrated pure white aura.

Aura Catch.

Pahn slammed both of his bare palms directly onto the flat of the enchanted, glowing broadsword, catching the blade mid-swing and safely grounding the volatile magic through his own body into the sand.

The kinetic impact was deafening. The sheer physical force of Sergei’s supercharged swing pushed Pahn backward, his bare feet carving two long, deep trenches through the arena sand.

Sergei grinned, realizing he had Pahn pinned. He raised his shield, preparing to weave one final Tactical Shift to teleport behind Pahn and bash his exposed spine while his hands were occupied with the sword.

But Pahn didn’t let go of the blade. He looked up, his dark eyes locking onto the Silver Aegis.

Pahn realized he couldn’t chase a teleporter. So, he decided to break the board.

Releasing the broadsword, Pahn channeled a massive surge of his Aura entirely into his right heel. With terrifying force, he drove his foot directly into the arena floor.

Earth-Shatter Stomp.

A concentrated shockwave of pure, localized kinetic aura exploded from his foot down through the ground. The pristine sand and the heavy cobblestones beneath it violently ruptured in a massive, thirty-foot radius. The earth heaved upward, completely destroying the level footing of the arena.

Sergei lost his balance instantly. As the ground crumbled beneath his armored boots, his Accelerate rhythm was shattered. To avoid falling prone and being crushed by the shifting stones, Sergei instinctively panicked and barked a rushed, desperate incantation.

”Transilio!”

He cast Tactical Shift, aiming to teleport to the safe, unbroken sand twenty feet behind Pahn.

It was exactly what Pahn wanted him to do.

Pahn didn’t turn around. His Aura of the Silver Fist felt the spatial tear forming in the air behind him. He knew exactly where the Silver Aegis center of mass would materialize.

Instead of turning to face the threat, Pahn simply took one rigid, perfectly measured step backward, inserting himself directly into Sergei’s exit vector.

CRACK.

Sergei materialized, his boots touching the sand. Before his inner ear could even register that the teleport was complete, Pahn struck.

Chakra Severance.

Up in the participant’s box, Ray’s eyes snapped to the exchange. He instantly layered the Serene Cultivator’s Aetheric Perception skill over his vision, watching the brilliant, flowing threads of ambient life-force and mana illuminate the arena.

Without even looking, Pahn drove a silver-wrapped fist backward with explosive, pinpoint accuracy. His knuckles struck the exact nerve cluster beneath the articulated joint of Sergei’s half-plate. Pahn injected a massive pulse of his disruptive aura directly into the Silver Aegis’ mana pathways, violently short-circuiting his connection to his magic.

Within Ray’s mind, the archetypes flared to life, deeply unsettled by the terrifying familiarity of the technique.

Healer: ”A flawless Anatomical Strike. He completely bypassed the physical defense to target the brachial plexus. He pinched the nerve cluster to deaden the limb and halt the blood flow. It’s exactly how we would disable a seizing patient, perfectly weaponized for the arena.”

Cultivator: ”Observe the mana disruption! He did not overpower the knight’s magic with brute force. He inserted a foreign sliver of his own aura to dam the river, causing a temporary, localized severance of the body’s internal mana gates.”

Ray’s breath hitched, a cold chill running down his spine as he watched the glowing aura disrupt Sergei’s core. He had seen this exact principle in action before. It was the identical, hyper-lethal, pressure-point combat style used by ’K’, the legendary operative from the Argent Hand. Pahn wasn’t just a brawler; he was a biological surgeon fighting with his bare hands.

Sergei’s eyes went wide, the pupils blowing out in sudden, agonizing shock. The disruptive aura short-circuited his nervous system instantly. His 3rd-Circle Accelerate spell violently fizzled out. His Phantasmal Guard illusions popped like soap bubbles.

Paralyzed, Sergei’s fingers went entirely numb. The Officer’s Broadsword slipped from his grasp and fell uselessly into the sand.

Pahn pivoted on his heel to face the stunned, helpless Sergei. He didn’t gloat. He didn’t offer a witty retort about Morkava.

He opened all his internal mana gates at once, redlining his own body.

The Silver Avalanche.

Pahn leaped into the air, becoming a terrifying blur of concussive violence. He rained down an inescapable barrage of six consecutive, aura-infused heavy strikes in a single second, each impact detonating with the deafening boom of an artillery shell.

The first punch caved in Sergei’s heavy heater shield, snapping the leather straps. The second punch shattered the reinforced steel boss. The third, fourth, fifth, and sixth strikes hammered into the Knight-Captain’s heavy breastplate with the force of a swinging battering ram.

The final blow launched Sergei Guntram off his feet. The Silver Aegis flew through the air, completely unconscious before his heavy armor finally crashed into the ruined, shattered cobblestones of the arena floor.

The Grand Arena fell dead silent for a single, stunned heartbeat, before erupting into absolute, deafening pandemonium.
