The Legendary Method Actor

With all seven champions lined up on the obsidian dais, Headmaster Andrade stepped up to the primary amplifying crystal.

The stadium fell so quiet you could hear the wind brushing against the stone walls.

”Look upon the dais, you are looking at the pinnacle of this academy’s current generation. They have fought, bled and conquered. They are the Vanguards of Solhaven Academy.”

Headmaster Andrade’s voice echoed with profound, regal authority, carrying over the thousands of silent spectators.

She paused, letting the weight of her words settle.

”But their true challenge has only just begun.”

A ripple of tension ran through the champions. Ray gazed at the headmaster. Darian tightened his grip on his sword hilt. Kaelen narrowed her eyes.

”As promised, the champions standing before you have proven their absolute supremacy in their respective fields. Therefore, they are officially drafted. These seven individuals will serve as the core representatives of Solhaven Academy at the upcoming Azure Cup.”

Andrade declared, her eyes sweeping over the seven students.

The crowd erupted, but Andrade immediately raised a hand, silencing them with a sheer display of presence.

”However, the Azure Cup is not a solitary endeavor.”

She continued, her voice taking on a strict, militaristic edge.

”You are the Pillars, but a pillar cannot hold up a fortress alone. We will be building dedicated, specialized teams around each and every one of you.”

Andrade turned to look directly at the champions.

”We cannot finalize your teams tonight. The Azure Cup Committee, held in the capital, has not yet released the specific parameters, environments, or event types for this year’s tournament. The moment that intelligence is secured, the true selection process begins. You have proven you can win your own battles. Now, you must prepare to lead others into theirs.”

Andrade stepped back from the crystal, her cape billowing behind her.

”Celebrate your victories tonight, champions. Rest your bodies and heal your wounds. Because when the dawn breaks, the main qualifiers are over... and the real preparations begin.”

The golden spotlights flared blindingly bright as the stadium exploded into a final, deafening roar that shook the very foundations of the academy.

On the dais, Darian looked at Kaelen. Clive glanced nervously at Logan. Bolgan just looked confused.

Ray Croft breathed deeply, his mind already churning through thousands of tactical variables, analyzing his fellow champions not as peers, but as assets on a much, much larger chessboard.

The moment Headmaster Andrade and the college department heads turned and stepped through a shimmering arcane portal at the rear of the obsidian dais, the suffocating, rigid formality of the Awarding Ceremony vanished.

The heavy magical barriers that had separated the arena floor from the spectator stands throughout the tournament suddenly dissolved with a soft, resonant hum.

For a split second, the stadium held its breath. Then, the dam broke.

Thousands of students, friends, and faculty flooded down the stone bleachers and poured onto the pristine golden sands. The air, which had previously tasted of sharp ozone and copper blood, was instantly replaced by the overwhelming, joyous scent of roasted festival meats, sweet pastries, and spilled ale. Warm, floating lanterns flared to life above the stadium, replacing the harsh, dramatic spotlights with a cozy, celebratory glow.

The Vanguards of Solhaven Academy began their descent down the obsidian stairs to meet the roaring tide.

As Darian Varrus reached the bottom step, his heavy, dented boots sinking into the sand, a sharply dressed man pushed his way through the frontline of the cheering crowd. The man wore a silver-trimmed coat bearing the crest of House Varrus.

”Young master Darian! Congratulations, and what a magnificent display.”

The attendant said, executing a flawless, practiced bow.

Darian paused, his bruised jaw tightening slightly.

”Is my father here head attendant Aldo?”

Aldo offered a stiff, practiced smile.

”Lord Varrus sends his deepest regrets, young master. Pressing estate matters kept him busy. However, he wishes it known that he is incredibly proud of your glorious victory. You have brought immense honor and prestige to House Varrus today.”

Darian looked at the attendant in silence. He knew Aldo was lying. It was a carefully rehearsed, empty political pleasantry. A couple of months ago, after the promotion trials, Darian had been one of the top finishers, but his father hadn’t been proud. Lord Varrus had scolded him fiercely, deeply disappointed by Darian’s early struggles and lack of absolute dominance prior to securing his rank.

But as Darian stood there, feeling the deep ache in his bones and the metallic tang of blood in his mouth, a desperate, lingering hope flickered in his chest. He had fought differently today. He hadn’t just won; he had become an unbreakable wall. He hoped that when the detailed reports of the Main Qualifiers reached his father that he would finally look past the dirt and the dented armor, and actually be proud of the man his son had become.

Darian gave a slow, measured nod. ”Send him my regards.”

”Out of the way!”

A rough, booming voice suddenly barked.

The formally dressed attendant was unceremoniously shoved aside by a massive wall of muscle. Kogar Ramsey pushed through the crowd. His right arm was wrapped around the waist of his brother, Kima, who was heavily bandaged, limping, but very much awake.

Kogar stopped in front of Darian, looking at the dented kite shield and the bruised jaw. The massive brawler grinned, a fiercely proud light in his eyes.

Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

”You look like hell, Leader or should I say Champion.”

Kogar grunted.

”I feel worse.”

Darian rasped, a genuine, tired smile finally breaking through his stoic facade.

Kima, leaning heavily against his brother, offered a weak but brilliant smile.

”You got him, boss. You really got him.”

”We got him.”

Darian corrected softly, reaching out to clasp Kogar’s forearm in a warrior’s grip. The hollow feeling left by the attendant vanished instantly, replaced by the fierce, blazing warmth of true brotherhood. He had lost the approval of a distant father, but he had the absolute loyalty of his brothers.

Across the sands, the other champions were quickly swallowed by the celebration.

Bolgan was being happily led toward a massive roasted-meat stall by Anita, the giant looking vastly more interested in the food than the 10,000-Mark reward he got. Nearby, Clive Belcoot was happily waving his Tier-3 Commission token, while Logan Savina had gone into one of the beast cages, sat down in the sand, casually tossing chunks of premium steak to his new massive dire wolf companion.

But amidst the chaotic celebration, a distinct center of gravity had formed near the eastern edge of the arena.

Ray Croft was leaning casually against the outer stone wall of the arena. Yet, his entire inner circle had naturally gravitated to him.

”Four thousand, four hundred points. You didn’t beat the Shattered Citadel, Croft. You bullied it.”

Cassian muttered, dragging his hands down his face, staring at Ray as if looking at a ghost.

”I merely facilitated a change in leadership in the illusionary world.”

Ray replied calmly.

Svane stepped forward to deliver a heavy, affectionate pat on Ray’s shoulder.

”A bloodless siege! The most boring, brilliant thing I have ever seen!”

Rina’s eyes were glowing with analytical curiosity very eager to learn.

”I did not expect you to use the resources you got in the Shattered Citadel to recruit those hidden armies.”

”Hungry and disgruntled men are cheap men, Rina.”

Ray said, tapping her shoulders.

Eliza simply stood at the edge of the group, looking radiant in the festival lights. She just offered him a graceful, deeply knowing smile, giving a silent praise to the Phantom General that beat her.

Even Master Elias, usually confined to his dusty workshop, wandered past the group. The grumpy professor stopped, looked at Ray, gave a single, gruff grunt of absolute approval, and kept walking toward the ale stands.

As the group laughed and celebrated, Ray felt a sudden, freezing pressure brush against his ankle. He glanced down. A patch of absolute darkness had detached itself from Rina’s shadow. Nox, the void-malkin, secretly attached to his shadow and sent a mental message of ‘Relieved and Hunger’.

Ray offered a tiny, secret smile to his shadow.

He looked up, scanning the chaotic, happy crowd. His eyes swept past the food stalls, the cheering students, and the floating lanterns, until they landed on a solitary figure standing near the center of the arena.

Kaelen Thorne stood completely alone.

She was the undisputed Queen of the Arena, the 3rd-Level Champion who had just delivered the most breathtaking finish of the night. But the House of Thorne was gone.

As she stood there, her left arm bound tightly in a medical sling, a few random students walked past, offering polite, perfunctory shouts of “Great fight!” or ”Congratulations!” before hurrying off to find their own friends. Kaelen nodded back, forcing a polite smirk, but no one stopped. She had no attendant to bring her regrets, no family left to celebrate her triumph.

She looked down at her boots, her good hand gripping the edge of her leather armor, feeling incredibly empty at this joyous moment.

Suddenly, a shadow fell over her.

Kaelen blinked and looked up.

Ray Croft stood in front of her. But he hadn’t come alone.

He had brought the entire circle. Cassian, Rina, Svane, and Eliza stood behind him, forming a protective, warm wall against the isolation of the massive stadium.

”That drop from the sky, I have fought gravity-mages who couldn’t hit the earth that hard. It was a beautiful strike, Kaelen.”

Svane rumbled, crossing his massive arms with a look of pure martial respect.

”Terrifying is the word you’re looking for, Svane. If I ever have to spar with you, I’ll bring an umbrella made of steel.”

Cassian joked, shuddering playfully.

Eliza stepped forward, seamlessly slipping a glass of high-end festival wine into Kaelen’s good hand.

”To the Tempest!”

Eliza said softly, her eyes shining with genuine warmth.

Kaelen stared at the glass of wine, then looked up at the group. The suffocating tightness in her chest suddenly snapped, flooded by a rush of unexpected emotion.

Ray stepped forward and gently clinked his glass of iced tea against her wine glass.

”Good fight, Tempest Champion.”

Ray said quietly, his eyes holding a depth of understanding that went far beyond the arena sands. He knew exactly what it felt like to be the last survivor of a dead House.

Kaelen’s eyes watered slightly, the tears threatening to break through her tough exterior. She quickly took a sip of the wine, hiding her face, before flashing them a razor-sharp smirk.

”Thanks, Ray.”

She whispered. As she looked at the circle of people standing around her, she realized with a sudden clarity that she wasn’t alone anymore. The House of Thorne was gone, but she had found a new family.

Before Kaelen could say anything else, the warm, floating lanterns above the stadium suddenly dimmed.

A collective gasp echoed through the crowd as a shower of magical, brilliant golden sparks erupted over the central obsidian stage.

”Solhaven Academy! You didn’t think we’d let the night end without one final song, did you?”

Bruce Doyle’s magically amplified voice rang out, vibrating with pure joy.

The crowd shrieked in anticipation.

”Back by overwhelming demand, to close out the Main Qualfiers...”

Bruce screamed, pointing to the stage.

”Performing another one of their smash hits, ’Fighting ‘Til it Burns!’... THE STARR FAMILY!”

The golden sparks cleared, revealing the band already in position.

Dylan Starr raised his enchanted drumsticks. He slammed the kick pedal of his massive ironwood Resonance Drums, unleashing a driving, heart-pounding four-on-the-floor beat.

THOOM, THOOM, THOOM.

The 128-BPM rhythm reverberated through the sand, instantly syncing the entire stadium’s pulse to the music.

Francesca Starr stepped to the front, striking a heavy, overdriven power chord on her Arcane-Lute that cut through the night air. She tossed her hair, shared a fiercely energetic look with her brother, and leaned into her crystal-tipped microphone.

Behind her glowing Lumin-Clavier, little Krystle Starr’s hands became a blur. Her padded hammers struck the resonance crystals, generating a massive, stadium-shaking wave of sound that mimicked heavy synth-brass, layered with shimmering, plucks of pure mana. Massive, sweeping illusions of cinematic fire and golden starlight erupted above the stage.

Dylan took the opening, his smooth, magnetic vocals riding perfectly over the punchy, magical percussion:

As the beat peaked, Krystle slammed a chord on her Lumin-Clavier, triggering an explosion of arcane pyrotechnics in the sky. The crowd lost their minds, thousands of students jumping and dancing as Dylan and Francesca harmonized in a flawless, stadium-style pop belt for the chorus:

Ray smiled, letting the echoing cheers carry him away. The Main Qualifiers had come to a close, and the Phantom General was exactly where he needed to be.
