The Legendary Method Actor

The room was stunned into silence. Kaelen stared at the map, realizing her father had been managing a logistical network more complex than the Royal Army’s.

”To address your fear, Headmaster, the scale of Iron-Wake was indeed massive. Even with the Secret Roads, the exit points that lead outside the Kingdom eventually have to merge with the known surface roads. Smuggling thousands of tons of Alpha-Class strategic resources across the borders of Valoria or Solara would trigger a massive diplomatic red flag and a border inspection. They can’t risk it.”

Ray said, bringing the focus back to Andrade.

”If they aren’t smuggling it out… Where is it then?”

Andrade whispered, staring at the glowing blue web.

”They are doing it little by little, but I believe the vast majority of the excavated void ore, refined null-alloy, and forged weapons are still inside the Kingdom.”

Ray said.

Ray manipulated the projection table. A number of distinct, bright amber dots illuminated across the map, scattered along or near the subterranean routes.

”I cross-referenced the Secret Road routes with the Royal Archives’ property records, specifically, records of abandoned military outposts, ruined pre-calamity structures, and foreclosed noble estates that are near or along the Secret Road routes. If I am not mistaken these locations are where the Argent Hand is stockpiling the massive resources from Iron-Wake.”

Ray explained.

Andrade stared at the glowing dots. It was a map of hidden arsenals capable of arming an insurrection that could shatter the kingdom. She looked up slowly, her piercing gaze locking onto the thirteen-year-old boy standing casually in front of her.

”Novice Croft. How confident are you in these specific stockpile locations?”

Andrade said, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

”Ninety-five percent.”

Ray replied without a moment of hesitation.

The Headmaster slumped back in her heavy chair. A profound realization washed over her. She looked at the Tactical Projection Table, then at Ray.

When she had drafted Ray to represent the academy at the Azure Cup, she thought she was giving him a distraction. When Ray had entered the Strategic War-Gaming event, she assumed he was just displaying his intellect for academic prestige.

She had been completely blind.

He had joined the War-Gaming event for a reason. He joined it specifically to legally gain access to the Royal Archives. He had never handed the war over to the adults. He had simply used the Academy’s own reward system to build the ultimate weapon against his enemies.

He hadn’t just found the Argent Hand. He had mapped them.

Headmaster Andrade stared at the glowing amber dots hovering above her desk. The pulsing light of the Tactical Projection Table reflected in her eyes. For the first time since Kaelen Thorne had dropped the black ledger onto her desk, the crushing, suffocating weight of the shadow war seemed to lighten.

”You have done it, Novice Croft, You haven’t just exposed them. You have handed the Kingdom its sword.”

Andrade said, her voice quiet but thick with genuine awe.

She stood up, smoothing the front of her formal robes, the exhaustion in her posture replaced by a sudden, fierce energy.

”I will contact Sidran in the Capital immediately! With this new information, we can coordinate simultaneous raids on all hidden caches before the Argent Hand even realizes their supply lines are compromised. You are dismissed, Novice Croft. All of you. You have done more than enough.”

Andrade declared, her mind already shifting to military logistics.

Svane shifted his weight to leave. Kaelen began to stand up.

But Ray didn’t move a single muscle.

He remained and stood there, his golden-flecked eyes were completely devoid of the relief that was currently washing over the Headmaster.

”I am not finished, Headmaster.”

Ray said politely, but his voice carried a firm, unyielding weight that instantly froze the room.

Andrade paused, her brow furrowing in confusion.

”Not finished? Novice Croft, you just uncovered the entirety of a hidden, continent-wide logistical network and secret caches. What could possibly be left?”

”The routes and caches are just the arms and legs. I came here today to give you the head.”

Ray stated coldly.

Ray reached out and manipulated the glowing runic interface of the projection table. The continent-wide view of Eldoria rapidly collapsed, shrinking down and aggressively zooming in until the massive, sprawling architecture of the Capital City of Luminis filled the projection.

This book was originally published on NovelFire. Check it out there for the real experience.

Ray’s fingers danced across the controls, shifting the focus to the affluent eastern hills just outside the city proper.

”When I was in the Royal Archives, I was able to see the historical data of the Royal Army patrol routes over the capital’s surrounding territories,”

Ray explained, his voice taking rapid clinical cadence.

Ghostly blue lines appeared, representing the paths of the Royal Guards. But as they approached the eastern hills, the lines abruptly bent, curving outward to actively avoid a massive, empty space in the center.

”A three-square-mile blind spot. A manufactured dead zone where absolutely no royal guards are scheduled to patrol.”

Ray pointed out.

”A blind spot near the Capital? That’s prime real estate. The Crown wouldn’t just leave it unguarded.”

Svane grunted, stepping closer to the table.

”They didn’t.”

Ray corrected. He tapped the table again.

Heavy military blueprints overlaid the topographical map. Four massive, imposing Royal Army fortresses materialized, anchoring the North, South, East, and West edges of the dead zone.

”Four heavy fortresses, but if you look closely at the architectural blueprints, you’ll see a chilling anomaly. The reinforced bracing on the iron gates, the overlapping fields of fire for the ballistae, the directional thermal wards...”

Ray said as if reciting a grocery list.

Ray looked up at Andrade.

”They are not facing outward to protect the estate from outside threats. They are facing inward. It is a permanent siege ring. Those fortresses aren’t designed to keep an enemy out. They are designed to keep something trapped inside.”

Kaelen felt a cold shiver run down her spine as she looked at the inverted fortresses.

”When I scoured the Royal Archives, the property deeds and land grants for this specific area were heavily scrubbed.

Ray explained.

”The Royal Archive only yielded a single piece of information about this location, the name of the estate. And that name is…”

”Blackwood Manor.”

Andrade interrupted Ray, her voice a breathless whisper.

All the color drained from the Headmaster’s face in an instant. Her imperious, commanding presence vanished, replaced by an expression of pure, unadulterated horror.

In the Ambient Presence of his mind, Ray’s internal committee immediately came to life.

Detective: ”Look at that, pupils dilated to the edge of the iris. Violent flutter of the pulse at the base of her throat. Heart rate just spiked to the red line. She isn’t just surprised, kid. She’s terrified.”

The Gritty Detective rasped, chewing on a phantom matchstick.

Courtier: ”More than terrified, that is the look of a woman who just realized the floor beneath her is made of thin glass. To evoke this level of existential dread from a 6th-Circle Master Mage... Blackwood Manor isn’t just a location on a map. It is a political earthquake. We have found the kingdom’s deepest, darkest secret.”

The Scheming Courtier murmured smoothly, adjusting his phantom lace cuffs.

Conman: ”So play the mark carefully. She is completely off-balance. Don’t gloat, and don’t push too aggressively, or she’ll raise her guards. Keep your voice low, surgical, and let the silence do the heavy lifting. Force her to fill the void.”

The Charismatic Conman chimed in, flashing a sharp, predatory smile.

Ray absorbed their counsel in a fraction of a second. He leaned slightly forward, keeping his expression perfectly flat.

”What is Blackwood Manor, Headmaster? And why is the Royal Army pretending it doesn’t exist?”

Ray asked, his voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel.

Andrade didn’t answer immediately. She slumped heavily back into her chair, looking older and more tired than Ray had ever seen her. The shadow war hadn’t just escalated; it had just breached the very foundation of the Kingdom.

”It is a ghost story, Novice Croft, that the Crown desperately wishes to forget, A dark chapter of the Royal Family that was buried before you were even born.”

Andrade breathed, her voice trembling slightly.

She rubbed her temples, forcing herself to speak the treasonous history aloud.

”Years ago, following the death of the last king, the Kingdom of Eldoria was secretly torn apart by a succession war. King Julian Aurelius the Scholar King, won the throne. He is an idealist, a man who believes deeply in institutional magic and enlightenment. He won not with armies, but through masterful political maneuvering, securing the absolute backing of the populace, the guilds, and the powerful Arcane Council.”

Andrade looked up, her eyes filled with dread.

”But King Julian had an illegitimate half-brother. Prince Luca Aurelius. Luca was a ruthless military prodigy who commanded the Kingdom’s armed forces. He lost the throne only because King Julian had the support of the Arcane Council’s overwhelming magical superiority against him.”

Kaelen frowned, sensing the terrible conclusion.

”If he waged a war for the throne and lost, why wasn’t he executed for treason?”

”Because of King Julian’s fatal flaw, a willful blindness born of compassion. The King could not bring himself to execute his own blood. He opted for mercy to prevent further bloodshed. He stripped Prince Luca of his titles, spared his life, and exiled him in Blackwood Manor.”

Andrade said bitterly.

“The King also ordered the standard patrols away from the area, fearing that a heavy Royal Guard presence would provoke Luca’s remaining loyalists into an uprising. King Julian gave his brother a peaceful exile.”

”He didn’t give him an exile, he gave him a cover. And a massive military blind spot to operate within.”

Ray said coldly.

Ray let the heavy information of the Crown sink in for a moment before he pulled up the final piece of data.

”I was also able to isolate this set of data from Titus Thorne’s black ledger.”

Ray said, his fingers tapping the table.

”There are two-hundred-and-forty individual entries marked as ’miscellaneous delivery’ routed to the exact coordinates of this blind spot. They happen like clockwork. Exactly every two weeks. For years.”

Ray stated.

”Two hundred and forty deliveries...”

Andrade murmured to herself.

”You don’t send every other week, miscellaneous deliveries to a heavily guarded, exiled prince. Now with this new information the headmaster has provided us. I believe this wasn’t a delivery schedule, it was a communication and reporting schedule.”

Kaelen gasped, her hand flying to her mouth as she realized what her father had inadvertently documented.

”If you remember our last conversation headmaster, I told you that the Argent Hand has a Patron powerful enough to blindfold Royal Inspectors. Prince Luca is a military genius. The Royal Archives revealed the existence of ’Secret Roads,’ pre-calamity subterranean tunnels that connect Iron-Wake directly to the North and the Capital. Luca knew those routes existed.”

Ray continued, stepping closer to the desk as he placed his hands flat on the desk, leaning in to deliver the checkmate.

”I believe this exiled prince allied with the Argent Hand. In exchange for the tunnel routes, the Argent Hand has been secretly supplying his loyalist troops with Null-Alloy weapons and armor. The exact countermeasure a military prodigy needs to counter the Arcane Council, burn Julian’s idealistic kingdom to the ground, and reclaim his birthright.”

Ray closed the holographic map with a sharp flick of his wrist. The blue light vanished, plunging the office back into the dim, ambient gloom of the shadow war.

”We don’t just know where the Hand’s weapons are anymore, Headmaster. We also now have a name for their Shadow Patron. ”

Ray said softly as he looked at the terrified, weary leader of Solhaven Academy.

“You are going to war against Prince Luca Aurelius.”
