The Legendary Method Actor

Francesca Starr stood frozen for a second, she stared at the empty space Melodye had just occupied.

”I... I am so incredibly sorry, Lord Croft. I have no idea what just came over her. She’s usually so composed.”

Francesca stammered, the flirtatious confidence entirely wiped from her face. She gestured helplessly toward the corridor where Melodye had fled.

Ray offered a gentle, reassuring smile, stepping neatly around the puddle of wine.

”Please, think nothing of it, Lady Francesca. The gala can be quite overwhelming. You should go check on your friend; she seemed genuinely distressed.”

”Right. Yes, of course. Please excuse me!”

Francesca offered a hasty, apologetic curtsy before gathering her vibrant skirts and rushing off into the crowded ballroom, calling out Melodye’s name over the ambient acoustic music of the gala.

Ray watched her go, his expression shifting to a mask of polite concern just as two familiar figures approached from his flank.

”Is everything alright here, Ray?”

Eliza Vance asked. Her sharp brown eyes immediately darted from the shattered glass on the floor to the retreating form of the Starr sibling. Beside her, Lady Esha Vance looked equally curious, her elegant fan pausing its rhythmic flutter.

”We heard a crash.”

Lady Esha noted.

In the Ambient Presence of his mind, the Scheming Courtier smoothed his phantom lace cuffs.

Courtier: ”Eliza’s Lie Detection skill is undoubtedly active; her eyes are passively scanning for micro-fluctuations in your body language. Do not state a definitive falsehood. To beat a lie detector, you must offer a plausible hypothesis based entirely on true physical reactions. Panic and nausea are, after all, close cousins. Give her the truth, just from the wrong angle.”

Taking the Courtier’s advice, Ray activated The Charismatic Conman’s ‘Performance (Acting within Acting)’ skill, his golden-flecked eyes projecting nothing but mild, innocent confusion.

”I’m not entirely sure, Eliza, Apprentice Norden and I were just having a lovely chat, but she suddenly went incredibly pale and dropped her glass. I can only guess, but it looked as though she was struck by a rather violent upset stomach. She left in quite a hurry.”

Ray replied, his voice perfectly even and polite.

Eliza tilted her head, her Lie Detection picking up no deliberate deception or physiological spikes from Ray’s calm demeanor. After all, Melodye had looked physically sick with terror. Eliza looked at the spilled wine, processed the logic, then shrugged, accepting the alibi.

”Well, the catering here is incredibly extravagant. Too much rich food and sparkling wine can certainly upset a delicate constitution. It is a pity; I was hoping to hear her perform later.”

Lady Esha noted with a sympathetic sigh.

”Indeed, a terrible pity.”

Ray murmured, taking a slow, casual sip of his iced tea.

Conman: ”An upset stomach. Hah! You gave her a psychic migraine she’ll be feeling in her teeth for a month, kid. That was fun.”

Ray continued to interact with Eliza and Esha Vance, when a hand gently caught his sleeve.

He turned to find Kaelen Thorne. The polite, high-society mask she had been wearing all evening had completely vanished. She looked exactly as she had a week ago outside the administrative building, deeply troubled, haunted, and carrying a weight far too heavy for her shoulders.

She pulled him slightly away from the bustling crowd, her voice dropping to a tense, urgent whisper.

”Ray, can I speak to you in private?”

Kaelen said, her eyes locking onto him with intense seriousness.

Eliza saw this as she hid a sharp, highly amused smirk behind her fan, leaning in slightly toward her mother.

”It seems our Novice Croft is the most in-demand socialite at the entire gala.”

She whispered playfully.

Ray brushed the attention off with his usual, unnerving calm. He turned back to the Vances, offering a flawless, apologetic bow.

”It appears duty calls once more. Lady Vance, Eliza, please excuse me for a moment.”

Ray said smoothly.

With their polite nods of dismissal, he gave a single, curt nod to Kaelen. He subtly signaled Svane to hold his position in the main hall and led Kaelen away from the noisy ballroom, slipping into one of the Starr Manor’s many specialized, acoustically isolated viewing balconies.

As they stepped outside, the heavy glass doors sealed shut behind them with a soft hiss, cutting off the gala’s ambient music entirely. The sudden silence was absolute, heavy with the chill of the night air and the stark contrast of the dark academy grounds stretching out below.

Once they were alone, Kaelen immediately dropped all formalities. She turned to him, her hands trembling slightly at her sides.

”I saw you earlier and the Headmaster went somewhere to talk, what did she tell you? ”Are they moving against the Argent Hand?””

Kaelen demanded, her voice tight.

Ray looked at her, his expression serious. Knowing that the intel was the most dangerous secret in the Kingdom, he refused to speak the words aloud. Instead, he focused his will and initiated the Understudy Protocol’s ‘Resonant Link Communication’, establishing a secure, telepathic connection directly into Kaelen’s mind.

Headmaster Andrade and Sidran Lockyer are currently coordinating to execute simultaneous raids on all the secret caches, however, they are not moving against Prince Luca Aurelius yet. Without physical evidence, accusing the King’s brother of high treason is political suicide.

Ray projected, his mental voice calm and analytical.

Kaelen flinched as the sheer, terrifying scale of the shadow war was confirmed in her mind. She turned away, gripping the cold stone railing of the balcony until her knuckles turned white, as she stared out into the dark academy grounds.

After a long, agonizing moment of silence, she turned back to him. The fear in her eyes had been entirely consumed by a fierce, unyielding fire. The grieving daughter was gone; the heir to House Thorne had taken her place.

I am planning on joining the raids. I have decided. But I need your advice. I need your help to convince the Headmaster to let me go.

Kaelen transmitted through the link, her mental voice ringing with absolute certainty.

In the quiet of his Ambient Presence, Ray’s internal committee convened instantly to assess this massive tactical shift.

The Gritty Detective chewed on a phantom matchstick, piecing the logic together.

Detective: “Look at her eyes, kid. She doesn’t care about confiscating Null-Alloy. I bet she is only interested in the unverified rumor from Lockyer’s network last week: a man matching Titus Thorne’s description was spotted on the run near the Valorian Kingdom border. We mapped a massive Argent Hand supply cache in the frozen North. She’s using the raid as a vehicle to search for her father.”

Ray let out a slow, heavy breath. He looked Kaelen directly in the eye.

It’s a military warzone, Kaelen. The Royal Army will be kicking down doors against desperate enemies. The Argent Hand is lethal. And ’K’... the legendary operative who kidnapped you... is still out there. If they spot you in the field, they will not hesitate to finish the job or worse use you to lure out your father.

Ray warned, his mental voice grim and heavy with consequence.

I know the risks, but my father stayed behind in Iron-Wake to save his people. He bought me a future with his life. I refuse to sit in safety and study magical theory while he might be bleeding out in the snow! I am going, Ray. With or without the Academy’s blessing.

Kaelen countered, stepping closer.

Ray stared at her. He saw the absolute, unyielding determination of a daughter who refused to be a pawn in the Kingdom’s shadow war. He knew right then that no logical argument, no statistical probability of death, and no academy rule would stop her. If they didn’t help her, she would go alone, and she would die.

The Grizzled Commander in his mind gave a reluctant, highly respectful grunt.

Commander: “She’s got iron in her spine, kid. A soldier with a personal vendetta is dangerous, but highly motivated. If we try to stop her, she’ll just go rogue and get herself killed. I recommend giving her the green light, but keeping her on a tight leash for her safety.”

Ray sighed, the tension bleeding out of his shoulders as his internal committee yielded to her resolve. He deactivated the ‘Resonant Link Communication’ to speak.

”Fine.”

Ray said softly.

”I will speak to Headmaster Andrade. I will convince her to attach you to the Northern raid unit as an ’Official Asset Assessor.’ The Royal Army grunts won’t know how to identify encrypted ledgers or magical caches. You can use that as your cover.”

Kaelen’s face broke into an expression of profound, overwhelming relief.

”But Kaelen, you must be careful. The Hand does not leave loose ends. If you find him... you get in, and you get out. You do not engage enemy combatants unless absolutely necessary. Do you understand?”

Ray added, his golden-flecked eyes hardening into a glare of absolute seriousness.

”I understand.”

Kaelen vowed, her voice barely a whisper in the quiet balcony.

”Thank you, Ray.”
