The Legendary Method Actor

In the participant’s box, Ray’s attention was focused entirely on workstation four.

The unassuming girl from the minor College of Alchemy hadn’t panicked when the upperclassman’s cauldron scorched. She hadn’t even flinched. She had selected the ingredients for the Lunar Dew Extract, a notoriously finicky, high-tier concoction that required absurdly precise timing and temperature fluctuations.

Instead of anxiously watching the cauldron or second-guessing her machine, she had closed her eyes.

She stood perfectly still on her runic platform, visualizing the exact chemical degradation rate of the herbs in her mind. When she opened her mouth, she didn’t sound like a terrified student. She sounded like a drill sergeant barking out a bizarre, flawlessly timed, rhythmic script.

”Rotate mana-valve counter-clockwise exactly twelve degrees!”

She commanded, her voice cutting clearly through the ambient noise of the arena.

”Drop the crushed Ash-Root! Wait exactly three and a half seconds! Stir clockwise twice! Halt! Decrease thermal output by precisely fourteen percent!”

Ray watched in absolute awe. She wasn’t brewing. She was coding.

The heavy bronze automaton moved with terrifying, jerky perfection. It didn’t hesitate. It executed her absolute mathematical rhythm without a single wasted microsecond. The heavy pincers rotated the valves with microscopic precision.

”Add two drops of distilled starlight!”

She barked, her eyes still firmly closed.

”Wait exactly two seconds! Stir counter-clockwise once! Terminate heat!”

The automaton’s gears locked into place. The thermal rune beneath the cauldron went dark.

For a long, agonizing moment, the arena held its breath. The murky liquid inside the glass vat settled.

Then, it ignited.

The potion didn’t explode. It illuminated. A blinding, flawless silver light radiated from the cauldron, so pure and bright it cast crisp shadows across the arena sands. It was a perfect, unparalleled stabilization of the Lunar Dew Extract.

”By the Founders!”

Bruce Doyle screamed into his amplification crystal, absolutely losing his mind as the Master Alchemist judges rushed the floor, their testing crystals singing with perfect harmonic chimes before they even touched the liquid.

Bruce was thrilled. The event had ended in a breathtaking masterpiece instead of a catastrophe.

”She didn’t just brew a potion! She orchestrated a symphony with eyes closed!”

Bruce roared, pointing dramatically at the young woman who had finally opened her eyes, letting out a long, shaky breath of relief.

”Ladies and gentlemen, we have our Grand Champion for the Alchemy and Potioneering Grand Finals! A 2nd-Circle Glass Vial from the minor College of Alchemy (Arcanum), give it up for the brilliant mind of Jeane Roland!”

The stadium erupted into a standing ovation, the cheers deafening as the dark horse from the minor college claimed the ultimate victory in the Alchemy Gauntlet.

Ray smiled, taking another sip of his iced tea. The intelligence, precision, and sheer nerve displayed on the sands today were staggering. The academy was a crucible, and it was forging absolute monsters.

The cheers for Jeane Roland’s spectacular victory were still echoing off the Grand Arena when teams of academy proctors swarmed the sands. Moving with rehearsed, military efficiency, they dismantled the heavy bronze brewing automatons, loaded the scorch-marked cauldrons onto floating pallets, and meticulously scrubbed the arena floor clean of all residual alchemical sludge.

They were preparing a blank canvas for the next finals event of the day.

As the last of the alchemy equipment was wheeled away into the eastern tunnels, the heavy iron gates on the opposite side of the stadium began to grind open.

The stadium’s jubilant cheers slowly died down, replaced by a tense, heavy silence. The ground physically shuddered.

It wasn’t a beast, and it wasn’t a human combatant. Rolling out onto the pristine sands on reinforced magical treads were three massive, heavily armored Siege Golems. They stood twenty feet tall, forged from dark, light-absorbing steel, and bound in thick, humming mana-chains that required teams of six proctors just to hold steady. They did not evoke the thrill of a sporting duel; they evoked the oppressive, chilling reality of actual, mechanized warfare.

Beneath the shadow of the three dormant giants, a team of high-ranking Master Artificers stepped forward. They directed a squad of earth-mages to levitate three massive, pre-built obsidian platforms onto the arena floor. Each heavy, circular slab was lowered perfectly into the sand, positioned exactly ten yards in front of a chained golem. Etched deep into the polished surface of each platform was a sprawling, identical, and dimly glowing Base Rune Array, waiting to be commanded.

High above the oppressive silence of the arena floor, Bruce Doyle’s floating platform hovered in place. An academy intern nervously floated up to him on a small anti-gravity disc, handing the announcer a gilded cue card for another sponsor read while the setup finished.

Bruce took the card. He looked at the parchment, his eyes scanning the content, and a vein visibly throbbed in his forehead.

He completely forgot to tap his amplification crystal to mute it.

”Absolutely not!”

Bruce snapped, his incredibly loud, magically enhanced voice booming like thunder across the dead-silent stadium.

”I am Bruce Doyle! The Golden Tongue of Solhaven Academy!”

The intern shrank back, terrified. The tens of thousands of spectators blinked, leaning forward in their seats. Up in the spectator box, Cassian eyes went wide.

”I will not do it!”

Bruce continued to rant, pacing his platform, utterly oblivious to the fact that his microphone was broadcasting his meltdown to fifty thousand people.

”My voice is an instrument of the gods! It is meant to narrate the clash of titans, the forging of legends, and the bleeding edge of magical theory! I refuse, I categorically refuse, to read an advertisement for ’Dr. Galdur’s Anti-Chafing Battle-Powder’!”

A profound, stunned silence gripped the arena for exactly two seconds.

Then, the entire stadium burst into a roaring, echoing wave of absolute, hysterical laughter.

Bruce froze. He slowly looked down at the glowing amplification crystal on his lapel. The realization washed over him, draining the color from his impeccably tanned face. He cleared his throat with a desperate professional dignity. Without breaking eye contact with the laughing crowd, he let the gilded cue card slip from his fingers, watching it flutter harmlessly down into the sands below.

”Ladies and gentlemen!”

Bruce pivoted instantly, his announcer persona snapping back into place with terrifying speed, acting as if the last thirty seconds had never happened.

”The canvas is set! The stage is primed! We move from the brilliance of Alchemy and Potioneering to the absolute architectural genius of the Grand Finals of the Runic Engineering Gauntlet!”

The crowd cheered, delighted by both the spectacle and the accidental comedy.

”Let us welcome the three surviving architects of war who conquered the brutal second round!” Bruce shouted, throwing his arms wide toward the eastern gates.

”In third place from the previous round, a 2nd-Circle Apprentice from the College of Arcanum minoring in the craft... Rolf Torvald!”

Rolf walked out, looking pale but determined, clutching a heavy leather toolbelt of runic etching tools.

”In second place, representing the minor College of Runic Engineering, a 3rd-Circle Matrix who believes raw power dictates the code... Hix Mueller!”

Hix strode out confidently. As a 3rd-Circle Adept, he possessed significantly more raw mana capacity than his peers, and his arrogant smirk made it clear he believed the trophy was already his.

”And our first-place qualifier! The dark horse who decoded the obstacle gauntlet flawlessly! A 2nd-Circle Sigil from the minor College of Runic Engineering... Clive Belcoot!”

Clive stepped onto the sands, adjusting his spectacles. He didn’t look arrogant; he looked intensely paranoid, his eyes already darting toward the massive, intimidating Base Rune Arrays carved into the floor.

”The rules of the Colossus Override are simple, yet completely terrifying!”

Bruce announced, hovering higher into the air to get out of the blast radius.

”Before each of our finalists stands a Siege Golem. Beneath their feet is a Base Rune Array. When the bell tolls, the chains will drop, and those golems will not stand still! They have been programmed for absolute hostility!”

A murmur of genuine alarm rippled through the audience.

”Our engineers must use the Base Array to defend themselves from the active onslaught!”

Bruce explained, his voice climbing with hype.

”While under heavy fire, they must rapidly carve modifications into the array to achieve one of three outcomes! Modify the base array and turn it into an offensive array to destroy the golem! Modify the base array into a Quarantine array to trap the golem! Or, the ultimate challenge, Modify the base array to override the internal matrix to control the golem! Defend, modify, and conquer! Which style would prevail? Time starts... NOW!”

The magical bell tolled.

The thick mana-chains binding the three twenty-foot colossi shattered into glowing dust.

Instantly, the dark steel giants hummed to life. Their runic eyes flared a hostile, violent crimson. They didn’t hesitate. The three golems simultaneously raised their massive arm-cannons, gathering dense kinetic mana, and opened fire.

”Shields! Shields!”

Hix Mueller screamed, diving onto his Base Array.

The three finalists scrambled frantically, injecting their own mana into the stone beneath their feet to activate the Base Array’s dormant base defensive properties. Three massive, hexagonal hard-light barriers flared into existence just a fraction of a second before the kinetic blasts hit.

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM.

The stadium shook. The kinetic impacts were devastating, spider-webbing the hard-light shields. The finalists were thrown to their knees by the concussive force, their hands pressed desperately against the glowing stone to keep the barriers from collapsing.
