The Legendary Method Actor

Andrade’s expression darkened. She slowly shook her head, pacing toward the room’s stained-glass window.

”I presented your findings to Sidran. We both agree with your tactical assessment.”

She admitted bitterly.

”But Sidran strongly advised that we cannot make a single move. We must exercise extreme caution. King Julian is fiercely sensitive regarding his brother’s exile. His mercy is his pride.”

”Pride won’t stop an army equipped with null-alloy weapons and armors.”

Ray countered, his voice cold.

”No, it won’t.”

Andrade agreed sharply.

”But accusing the King’s brother of high treason without absolute, undeniable physical proof is political suicide. If we strike at the Patron now, based purely on logistical deductions from a former Argent Hand operative ledger, we will be the ones executed for treason. We are hoping that the simultaneous raids on the secret stashes will prove the value of the ledger and also yield physical evidence, something we can directly present to the King.”

”So, the head of the snake remains untouched.”

Ray noted, clearly disappointed.

Courtier: ”It is frustrating, but she is right. Bureaucracy and royal sentimentality are thicker armors than any steel. Let them raid the caches. Stripping the Patron of his weapons is the best we can hope for right now.”

Ray took a slow breath, accepting the tactical reality.

”I understand the situation, Headmaster. You have to secure the board before you can check the king.”

Andrade turned back to face him, the hard lines around her mouth softening just a fraction. She saw the disappointment in his eyes and let out a weary sigh.

”You have done the Kingdom an immeasurable service, Novice Croft.”

Andrade said sincerely.

”I owe you a debt that the academy’s standard reward systems simply cannot cover. I cannot give you more Academy Marks as you already got a reward from before and even a monthly stipend, nor can I grant you deeper access to the Archives without drawing the Arcane Council’s suspicion.”

She took a step closer, looking at the thirteen-year-old boy who had single-handedly mapped a shadow war.

”Therefore, I offer you this instead. A promise. If you ever have a request, a favor, a need, or a door that requires opening, you come directly to me. I will do everything within my considerable power to accomplish it for you. No questions asked.”

Andrade said, her voice echoing with absolute sincerity.

Ray looked at the Master Mage. A personal, blank-check favor from the Headmaster of Solhaven Academy was worth more than a mountain of gold.

”Thank you, Headmaster. I will be sure to keep that in mind.”

Ray said, a slow, calculated smile touching his lips.

With a sharp, precise gesture from Headmaster Andrade, the shimmering, translucent dome dissolved into nothingness, and the absolute, deafening silence of the room was instantly washed away by the soft, melodic acoustic sound of the Starr Gala bleeding under the heavy doors.

The secret alliance had been reaffirmed, and Ray was walking away with a blank-check favor from the most powerful woman in the academy.

Andrade smoothed the front of her formal robes, her posture shifting effortlessly. The weary, desperate commander of the shadow war vanished, instantly replaced by the cold, unapproachable Headmaster of Solhaven Academy. Without another word, she unlocked the door and swept out into the grand hallway. Ray followed a few paces behind, giving Svane a subtle nod as the Gold Aegis fell into step beside him.

They re-entered the bustling ballroom. Ray immediately began scanning the crowd, looking for Eliza, Lady Esha, and keeping an eye out for any further social threats.

Before he could cross the room, a vibrantly dressed figure intercepted him. It was Lady Jane Starr, but this time, the eccentric matriarch was without her famous children. Her usual overly energetic demeanor was dialed back, replaced by a much quieter, earnest expression.

”Novice Croft, I apologize for monopolizing your evening, but I was hoping you might spare a few moments for a private conversation? My study is just down the east wing.”

Jane said, her voice barely rising above the ambient music.

In the Ambient Presence, The Scheming Courtier immediately took notice.

Courtier: ”She wants a private audience. This is our chance to decipher that ’benefactor’ comment. Accept the invitation, but remain guarded.”

The Scheming Courtier murmured, intrigued by the political anomaly.

”Of course, Lady Jane. Lead the way.”

Ray replied with a gracious, practiced bow.

Before they walked away, Jane flagged down a passing staffer carrying a silver tray of crystalline flutes.

”You there. Find the head attendant, tell him I require his presence in my study immediately.”

The staffer bowed sharply and scurried off. Jane gestured for Ray to follow, and together with Svane trailing silently behind, they navigated away from the glittering ballroom and into the quiet, heavily carpeted corridors of the eastern wing.

Jane led Ray into her private study. The room was a marvel of acoustic engineering. The walls were lined with padded velvet and dark mahogany, designed to absorb every echo. As the heavy door clicked shut, leaving Svane to stand guard in the hall, Jane turned to face Ray. She offered a warm, somewhat apologetic smile.

”You were probably quite confused earlier, Novice Croft, when I told my children you were my benefactor.”

Jane began, gesturing to a plush leather armchair.

”I admit, Lady Jane, it caught me off guard. Unless my memory fails me, this is the first time we have formally met. I haven’t patronized your family’s endeavors, nor have I done any financial transaction.”

Ray replied politely, remaining standing.

A soft, perfectly timed knock interrupted them.

”Come in.”

Jane called out.

The door opened with barely a whisper, and Warren Ramada stepped into the room.

He was a tall, unnervingly still man in his late fifties. He wore a midnight-black steward’s coat woven with subtle silver threads, threads Ray instantly recognized as sound-dampening enchantments. Warren’s posture was immaculate, and his sharp, intelligent eyes seemed to register every single detail in the room while giving absolutely nothing away.

Conman: ”Look at how he holds himself. That isn’t just a butler. That is a man who knows where every single skeleton in this academy is buried.”

Courtier: ”Weaponized politeness. A spymaster wearing a servant’s coat. Tread very carefully.”

”Novice Croft, allow me to introduce Warren Ramada. He is not just my head attendant; he is my most trusted confidant.”

Lady Jane said softly,

Warren offered a bow that was exactly deep enough to convey respect, but not a fraction deeper.

”It is an honor to finally meet you, Lord Croft.”

”The honor is mine, Mr. Ramada, but I am still at a loss as to why I am being called a benefactor.”

Ray replied smoothly.

Jane looked to her confidant, silently giving him the floor. Warren stepped forward, his voice a low, perfectly modulated baritone.

”For many years, Lord Croft, my mistress, was quietly suffering from a debilitating illness.”

Warren explained, his tone completely devoid of judgment but heavy with past worry.

”She was trapped in the Withering Grip, a severe, physiological addiction to a narcotic known as Night’s Whisper. It is a scourge that quietly plagues high society. It was so bad to the point that she could no longer go with the children on their tour.”

Ray’s eyes narrowed slightly, processing the information, but he let the steward continue.

”I have spent decades building relationships within the academy’s servant network,”

Warren said.

”Last year, I had the pleasure of befriending your attendant, Miss Rina. She is a remarkably observant and kind-hearted young woman. During a discreet conversation, I confided in her regarding my mistress’s deteriorating condition. Miss Rina recognized the symptoms immediately. She noted they perfectly matched the illness your own mother, Lady Eileen Croft, suffered from.”

Ray froze. The gears in his mind violently locked into place as a memory flashed before his eyes.

Last year, back in his suite in the Spire of Sages. Rina had been preparing his uniform. She had casually, almost innocently, asked him to clarify the exact proportions of the tea they had used to cure his mother. Ray remembered how, back in Greywood Keep, he had feigned a cough and guided Rina to give some Moonpetal tea to his mother, which she then gave to Lady Eileen. When she asked about it at the academy, Ray had nonchalantly confirmed the recipe for her, thinking nothing of it.

He had been completely unaware that Rina was passing this life-saving, botanical intelligence directly to the butler of one of the academy’s wealthiest benefactors!

Courtier: ”By the Gods... she didn’t just make friends. She casually executed a high-level political alliance without even trying! She handed us House Starr’s absolute loyalty over a cup of tea!”

The Scheming Courtier practically gasped, a mixture of shock and deep, undeniable jealousy coloring his voice.

Ray internally shook his head, utterly amazed at the massive, hidden impact Rina’s ‘World of Whispers’ network had just detonated on his political standing.

”I brewed the Moonpetal tea exactly as Miss Rina instructed, using the specific temperature and steeping times you provided her.”

Warren confirmed, bowing his head.

”I administered it to Lady Jane. It successfully purged the Night’s Whisper from her system. You saved her life, Lord Croft.”

”You did not just save me, once I was cured, I tasked Warren with secretly brewing the tea for several of my closest friends who were also quietly suffering in the dark. You have saved families, Novice Croft.”

Jane interrupted, her vibrant energy returning as tears welled in her eyes.

Warren cleared his throat softly, shifting the conversation to logistics.

”However, executing this cure was incredibly difficult. For a long time, it was nearly impossible to procure the main ingredient. The academy’s supply of Moonpetal was constantly bought out by unknown, heavily funded parties. Strangely, in the last couple of months, Moonpetal has suddenly become available on the black market and academy supply lines again.”

Warren said, his sharp eyes watching Ray closely.

In the Ambient Presence of Ray’s mind, his internal committee instantly went into overdrive.

Detective: ”Wait. Run that timeline back. ’The last couple of months.’ What exactly happened in the past couple of months? Remember our first year? Rina brought us a report from Old Man Hemlock complaining that his Moonpetal supply was mysteriously dwindling and being secretly harvested.”

Courtier: ”And what changed recently? Headmaster Andrade’s surgical purge. She rooted out the Argent Hand’s presence in the academy.

Ray’s mind connected the final dots with terrifying speed.

He knew exactly why the supply had freed up. The Argent Hand had been the ones monopolizing the Moonpetal, actively preventing the spread of the ingredient supply that could counteract the effects of Night’s Whisper. But the implication went so much deeper than academy logistics.

The realization hit Ray like a physical blow.

My father.

If the Argent Hand controlled the production and distribution of Night’s Whisper, then it was highly probable that they were the exact same organization that had supplied the drug to his father. The Argent Hand wasn’t just a political threat to the Crown; they were directly responsible for the ruin of House Croft.

By triggering Andrade’s purge, Ray hadn’t just removed enemy spies. He had completely shattered the Hand’s local narcotic operation in the academy, inadvertently freeing up the Moonpetal supply that ended up saving Lady Jane.

Every action Ray had taken in the shadow war was rippling outward in ways he hadn’t even calculated.

Ray composed himself, reigning in the internal shock, and offered a humble, practiced smile.

”I merely answered a botanical question for my attendant, Lady Jane. I cannot accept the grand title of benefactor for simply knowing a recipe.”

”I refuse your modesty, Novice Croft.”

Jane said fiercely, stepping forward to clasp his hands in hers.

”You gave us the weapon to fight back against the dark. House Starr is forever in your debt.”
