The Legendary Method Actor

The golems didn’t stop. They began a slow, heavy, terrifying march forward, raining kinetic blasts down on the flickering shields. Every impact sent shockwaves through the arena floor, kicking up clouds of pulverized stone and sand.

Hix Mueller gritted his teeth. Relying entirely on his superior 3rd-Circle mana pool, he brute-forced his shield, pushing a massive amount of energy into the defensive runes to stabilize them. The hard-light barrier groaned under the stress, spider-webbing with micro-fractures that Hix had to instantly patch with mana. With his shield holding, he immediately began furiously carving an Offensive array sequence, intending to turn his Base Array into an offensive one to destroy the golem.

But Clive Belcoot and Rolf Torvald didn’t follow suit. The second round of the gauntlet had beaten a deep, unrelenting lesson into them. They knew the academy never presented a straightforward problem.

There’s a trick.

Clive thought frantically, sweat dripping down his forehead as he maintained his flickering shield with one hand and traced the Base Array’s geometry with the other.

There’s always a trick. This base array is too complex just for a simple shield. The lines are weaving into dead ends. Why?

Up in the participants box, Ray Croft watched the frantic, explosive scramble with absolute fascination. Like the participants below, his tactical mind also thought the same.

There had to be a secret. The academy wouldn’t simply throw students at military siege weapons without a hidden variable.

Ray thought as he closed his eyes, centering his focus, and initiated a Concurrent Partial Immersion.

Layering the Serene Cultivator’s ‘Aetheric Perception’ skill andthe Arcane Scribe’s ‘Runic Sight,’ Ray opened his eyes. The physical arena washed away, replaced by a glowing, multi-layered schematic of flowing mana and intricate code.

He inspected the massive Siege Golems first. Sweeping his gaze over their dark steel chassis, he didn’t find any hidden puzzle mechanics. He did, however, spot a heavily encrypted remote-command rune glowing faintly at the base of each golem’s neck. The signal tethered directly to the proctors’ booth across the stadium.

Ray let out a quiet breath of realization.

They aren’t autonomous, they’re being actively piloted. The participants aren’t in any grave danger; the proctors will freeze the machines before a lethal blow lands.

He thought.

Somewhat relieved that this wasn’t an actual death challenge, Ray shifted his enhanced vision down to the three pre-built obsidian platforms.

Instantly, his Aetheric Perception flared, detecting a massive, blinding concentration of raw energy pooled deep within the stone of all three slabs. Pushing his Runic Sight to its limit, he zoomed in on the geometric lines. The massive energy source was perfectly masked, hidden beneath a brilliant camouflage array that was seamlessly embedded into the chaotic lines of the provided Base Array.

Within his mind, the archetypes were already rapidly decoding the glowing geometry on the arena floor.

Cultivator: ”Such a vast reservoir of potent, still energy hidden beneath the surface. It is like an underground lake, waiting for a single tap to unleash a flood. If these students rely only on their own shallow internal pools to fight a mountain of steel, their spirits will quickly break.”

Scribe: ”Magnificent obfuscation! The proctors have layered three dummy-circuits over the primary conduit. To the untrained eye, it looks like structural reinforcement for the defensive shield. But it is actually a masterclass in camouflage, hiding the focal convergence near the western edge of the circle.”

Scholar: ”Oh, it’s devious! It’s absolutely devious! It’s a dormant Mana-Well! They buried a massive, pre-charged mana battery directly inside the base code! If they try to modify the array using only their own internal mana against a Siege Golem, they will run dry in two minutes!”

Ray nodded slightly. It was a brilliant, cruel test.

Down on the sands, the brutal reality of the Eccentric Scholar’s calculation was already catching up to Hix Mueller.

The 3rd-Circle Matrix was carving his offensive rune array, pouring his vast mana reserves into the stone. But the Siege Golem had closed the distance. It stopped firing its arm-cannon and simply raised its massive, two-ton steel foot, stomping repeatedly on Hix’s shield.

CRACK. CRACK.

Hix gasped, his nose bleeding from the sheer exertion. He was trying to power and maintain both the rune’s shield and form his offensive array simultaneously. He was redlining.

”Just... a little... more!”

Hix screamed, slamming his chisel into the final rune etching.

He triggered the offensive array. A burst of fire erupted from the floor, striking the Golem’s chest. But because Hix hadn’t tapped into the hidden energy-well and his mana reserves was already low, the mana to power the offensive rune array was pathetically weak. It merely scorched the golem’s armor.

The Golem raised its massive fist and slammed it down. Hix’s mana reserves have run dry. His shield shattered like glass.

Just before the giant fist crushed the arrogant student into paste, the academy proctors triggered the emergency stasis runes. The Golem froze mid-swing, very close to Hix’s face.

”And Hix Mueller’s shield collapses!”

Bruce Doyle announced.

”His mana is completely drained! The 3rd-Circle Matrix is officially eliminated!”

Rolf Torvald, hearing the elimination, panicked. His golem was also closing in, pounding on his shield. He looked down at the chaotic lines of the Base Array. He stopped trying to carve his rune array and focused entirely on the puzzle.

There!

Rolf’s eyes went wide as he spotted the dormant focal convergence.

An energy-well!

Without hesitating, Rolf carved a rapid connecting line from the well to his etching space. The moment the connection was made, a massive, cooling rush of external mana flooded his array.

”Got it!”

Rolf shouted. Playing it smart and safe, he routed the massive power source into a Quarantine sequence, his chisel flying frantically across the obsidian as he linked the dormant well to the binding runes. The sheer volume of energy rushing through the circuit made the air feel heavy with static.

The Base Array flared with blinding white light. Four massive, thick chains of solid hard-light erupted from the platform, wrapping violently around the Siege Golem’s legs, arms, and torso. The giant machine struggled, its gears grinding in protest, but the energy-well’s power was too immense. The golem was perfectly, safely pinned to the floor.

”Incredible!”

Bruce roared.

”Rolf Torvald successfully quarantines his target! A flawless, safe completion!”

But all eyes in the stadium quickly turned to the center platform.

Clive Belcoot was in absolute hell.

His shield was barely holding against the relentless, thundering strikes of his golem. His spectacles were cracked. But Clive had also found the energy-well.

Instead of playing it safe and trapping the machine, Clive had chosen the ultimate risk. He was going for the Override.

It required carving the most complex, delicate, and dense runic sequence possible, right in the middle of an active warzone. The hacking matrix demanded absolute geometric perfection; a single line drawn a millimeter too wide would cause the entire array to short-circuit, leaving him completely defenseless. Every time the golem slammed its fists against his shield, the concussive shockwave made his carving hand slip, forcing him to constantly recalculate and adjust the runic pathways on the fly.

”Hold... hold!”

Clive muttered to himself, bleeding from his lip as he rapidly etched lines of pure logic into the stone, routing the Aether-Well’s power into a neurological hacking matrix.

The golem raised both of its massive fists, clasping them together for a devastating, shield-breaking double hammer-blow.

Clive had two seconds before his barrier shattered.

He didn’t reinforce the shield. He let it drop entirely, pouring every single ounce of his focus and the energy-well’s energy into the final line of code.

The Golem’s fists descended, casting a massive, lethal shadow over the kneeling student. Time seemed to dilate. For a horrifying fraction of a second, the entire stadium collectively gasped, fully expecting the 2nd-Circle Sigil to be flattened right into the obsidian platform.

Clive slammed both of his bloodied, trembling hands flat against the completed Override array.

“ACTIVATE!”

The runic sequence flashed with a blinding, pulsing azure light. The hacking matrix shot upward, striking the golem directly in its central core.

The massive steel fists stopped exactly two inches from Clive’s face. The sheer wind pressure of the halted strike blew Clive’s cracked spectacles off his nose.

The arena fell dead silent.

Slowly, the ominous, hostile crimson light in the Siege Golem’s runic eyes flickered. The red faded, replaced by a calm, compliant, glowing blue.

The twenty-foot colossus slowly lowered its arms. With a heavy, grinding groan of metal and stone, the giant machine stepped backward, lowered itself onto one massive knee, and bowed its head to the exhausted, trembling 2nd-Circle Sigil.

The stadium erupted into absolute, deafening pandemonium.

”HE DID IT!”

Bruce Doyle screamed, completely abandoning his professional composure, jumping up and down on his floating platform.

”An absolute masterclass in under-fire engineering! He didn’t just survive the Colossus; he made it bow! Clive Belcoot achieves the ultimate Override and claims the Grand Championship of the Runic Engineering Gauntlet!”

Up in the participants box, Ray Croft applauded along with the roaring crowd. It had been a magnificent display of intellect and raw nerve. The crafters of Solhaven Academy had proven today that they were every bit as terrifying as the duelists wielding swords.
