Destined Entwining: Capturing My Devoted Beau

Chapter 478: Chapter 260: What If I Hadn’t Forced It (First Update)

Summer Spencer didn’t know what she was thinking.

She was like a walking corpse, waiting outside the operating room.

When Hazel Winchester was wheeled into a private ward after her surgery, Summer was there waiting by her bedside.

She waited until midnight for Hazel to wake up, and only then did Summer gradually return to normal.

”Mom!” She threw herself by her bedside, crying uncontrollably.

Hazel had just come out of surgery, and her chest felt like it was on fire, as if those tobacco threads had irritated her lungs and hadn’t been thoroughly cleared.

Whenever she tried to speak, she couldn’t help but cough, coughing so much that she couldn’t form words.

Summer quickly got up to fetch a bottle of warm water, poured a glass, and tried to feed it to Hazel.

Hazel hurriedly shook her head.

Having just had a tube inserted from the surgery, she couldn’t drink water yet.

Seeing Hazel refuse, Summer set the glass back down and asked tearfully, ”Mom, are you feeling any better?”

Hazel panted a few breaths, her throat producing a few raspy sounds, as jarring as sandpaper scraping on shattered glass.

Summer was terrified, ”Mom, what happened to your voice?!”

Among Cameron Spencer’s women, Hazel wasn’t the most beautiful, didn’t come from the best family, nor did she have the highest status, but she had a beautiful voice. Even at her age, her coyness sounded natural.

But now, her voice was almost entirely ruined.

Who knows if it would recover.

Summer suppressed the panic in her heart and tried her best to comfort Hazel, ”Mom, you’ve just had surgery, rest for now, and we’ll talk about things tomorrow.”

Soon the doctor came for rounds and added a sedative to Hazel’s IV, helping her to sleep quickly.

Post-surgery patients recover faster with more sleep.

Once Hazel was asleep, Summer went outside to find the doctor who had just made the rounds, and softly asked him, ”Excuse me, what is my mom’s condition? She tried to speak but couldn’t utter a single word.”

The doctor glanced at her and said, ”Wanting to speak already? She should rest more; in about half a year, we can see if she can manage to make any sound.”

”What?! No way! Didn’t you finish the surgery?!” Summer was both shocked and angry, ”My mom... the cigar tobacco threads...”

”Yes, they were removed, but those tobacco threads are very fine and harsh, they severely scratched her vocal cords and throat, and her lungs were also greatly affected.”

”Additionally, those cigar tobacco threads were soaked in a special solution, which, when consumed long-term, can cause severe dependency.”

”Ingested entirely into the stomach, part of the substance was absorbed, so... your mom might be dependent on certain substances in the future as well.”

”It’s possible to quit, but it will be difficult.” The doctor spoke while flipping through the medical records, ”Her body will be very weak in the future, and it will be hard to fully recover. Fortunately, your family doesn’t lack money, and she doesn’t need to work, so with proper care, it’s not difficult for her to live to seventy or eighty.”

Summer’s face looked very grim, ”So you’re saying, my mom’s voice won’t recover, and her body also won’t recover?”

”Theoretically, yes, but perhaps there might be a miracle.” The doctor smiled, ”I have other things to attend to, excuse me.”

After the doctor left, Summer returned to the private ward and slept on the small bed meant for accompanying family.

When she woke up, another doctor came to make rounds.

By this time, Hazel had also woken up and was even able to sit up.

Once the doctor left, Summer walked over.

Hazel looked better but compared to yesterday, just slightly better, not recovered to her pre-injury state.

Back then, although Hazel was a bit older, she had maintained herself well, without a wrinkle.

Now, her hair was disheveled, and her crow’s feet were clearly visible at the corners of her eyes.

She gestured to Summer, mouthing the silent words ”cell phone.”

Summer understood and brought over Hazel’s small bag, found her phone, and handed it to her.

The mother and daughter started chatting through text.

Since Hazel couldn’t speak, this was their only way to communicate.

[Summer]: Mom, what on earth happened? Why would you swallow cigar tobacco threads to commit suicide???

Summer couldn’t, for the life of her, believe that her mom was someone who would take her own life.

Hazel chuckled bitterly, recalling the scene from the day before, she couldn’t help but shiver.

After so many years with Cameron Spencer, she had always heard people say that Cameron would stop at nothing for business, but she had never really understood what ”stop at nothing” truly meant.

Until yesterday, when she was rendered speechless by Cameron Spencer’s questions, and felt so guilty she wanted to crawl into a hole.
