Destined Entwining: Capturing My Devoted Beau

Chapter 165: Chapter 101: I’ve Met Plenty of People Like You

Lawrence Winters’ eyes flickered slightly, and the smile on his face faded as he stared directly at the assistant director in the middle.

The interview felt a bit uncomfortable for her, almost like she was being interrogated.

However, she hadn’t experienced other company interviews, so she wasn’t sure if all companies did it this way.

As these thoughts ran through her mind and she hadn’t figured out how to respond, the assistant director said again, ”Lawrence Winters, I’ve carefully reviewed your transcript and resume.”

”Your grades are indeed excellent, always ranking first in your class, but I’ve heard that you haven’t attended any classes in the past three and a half years except for exams.”

”Can you tell me why that is?”

The assistant director showed an expression of great puzzlement, as if faced with an age-old mystery.

Lawrence Winters felt her heart skip a beat and thought privately, how could they tell she only came for exams just by looking at transcripts and resumes?

She thought quickly and soon realized they indeed had a quite thorough understanding of her.

Lawrence Winters decided not to hide anything and replied with a smile, ”Yes, I used to have poor health and was recuperating elsewhere. Now that I’ve gotten better, I’ve returned to school.”

”As you can see from my transcript, although I didn’t attend classes, I didn’t fall behind in my studies. I did a great job self-studying.”

This was implying her self-learning ability was quite strong.

In truth, for a company, an employee with strong self-learning abilities is much more valuable than someone who just excels at tests.

Lawrence Winters had thoughtfully assessed this and believed it was one of her strengths, so she made a point of mentioning it.

”You had poor health?” The assistant director quickly glanced at her, saying, ”I couldn’t tell...”

”I said I’ve already recovered.” Lawrence Winters smiled sweetly.

Instantly, the assistant director’s face darkened, ”I’m asking you questions, don’t smile foolishly.”

Lawrence Winters: ”...”

Was this questioning? She thought it sounded more like an interrogation. Was she only supposed to answer ”yes” or ”no”?

Lawrence Winters pressed her lips together, and her smile gradually faded.

”Speak up, why aren’t you answering?” The assistant director tapped the table impatiently, ”We’re all very busy, not like you university students with nothing to do.”

Lawrence slightly raised her eyebrows.

If she was just an ordinary university student and was belittled like that by this woman, she likely would have exploded and argued back.

But her composure had been honed over the years through the ups and downs shared with her uncle, Nick Zeller.

She spoke unhurriedly, ”I already answered. At first, my health wasn’t good, so I took a long leave. Every semester, a doctor’s note was sent to the school, and all the procedures complied with the school’s regulations.”

”I’m attending school now because I’ve already recovered...”

”Ha, so simple? If you ask me, you were never really sick. You just bribed the doctor to give you fake notes!” said the assistant director sharply.

She wore large black-framed glasses, and her gaze seemed like a searchlight trying to uncover the ’small’ things beneath Lawrence Winters’ surface.

Lawrence chuckled to herself. You say it’s fake, so it’s fake? — Where’s the evidence?

The summer after her senior year, she had no idea what happened, she just remembered being unconscious for a long time.

Later she asked her uncle, her mother, and Kenneth Osborne, they all said she was being naughty and hit her head while swimming, which caused excessive bleeding and led to the coma.

At that time, her health was indeed very weak, and her uncle and mother unanimously decided to keep her home to recuperate instead of going to school.

They even considered having her suspend her studies temporarily.

But she wouldn’t agree, insisting she could self-study at home.

Later, her uncle managed to find someone to speak on her behalf and finally got the vice-principal of Y University to agree she didn’t have to attend classes but must take the final exams.

Moreover, if she failed the exams, there weren’t any opportunities for retakes.

She agreed to all of it, choosing courses online, buying textbooks, and keenly self-studying.

She just recovered faster than the doctors expected.

To be safe, her uncle, Nick Zeller, still suggested she shouldn’t go to school for a while and continued having her join him to consult on Feng Shui, which was why she hadn’t attended any classes in the past three and a half years, except for exams.

But what did all this have to do with her interview?

The school and department didn’t mind, and her grades weren’t affected, so why treat her like a criminal?

Lawrence Winters knew at this moment she absolutely couldn’t turn hostile, but this didn’t mean she had to be led around by the nose.

Still unhurried, Lawrence continued with the same tone and smiled, ”Assistant Director, would you like to call my attending doctor and ask if he issued fake certificates?”

The assistant director hesitated but quickly recovered, ”What good would calling do? You’ve already bribed them to cover for you.”

”Since you’ve asserted I’m lying and that my doctor’s note is fake, then please provide evidence,” Lawrence shifted her position, finally crossing her legs, her demeanor a bit more arrogant.

”Why should I provide evidence? Shouldn’t you be the one to prove it’s real?” The assistant director began to press aggressively.

Lawrence let out a small laugh, ”I’ve already stated it’s true. The hospital has records, and the school accepts it.”

”Now you’re the one claiming my doctor’s note is fake. By the principle of ’he who asserts must prove,’ you need to provide evidence that my doctor’s note is fake, not just rely on the words ’I think’ as proof.”

The assistant director was so embarrassed by Lawrence’s rebuttal that her face turned red with anger, ”I see you’re just sly and deceitful! I’ve seen plenty like you!”

”What’s the use of good grades? You lack character, always looking for loopholes and fabricating stories to trap others, our company doesn’t want someone like you!”
