Armed Train in the Apocalypse

Lin Jin sensed his goodwill, nodded, and was about to step forward.

Suddenly, a faint sound source came from afar, neither gunfire nor the howls of zombies.

It was sharper and more continuous than those sounds.

And it had a trend of getting louder.

Lin Jin turned back and saw that not only did he hear it, but several teammates behind him heard it too.

The scout quickly jumped onto a car by the roadside and stood on it, using binoculars to look into the distance.

”Can’t see clearly...”

With this said, the few people became more anxious, but without binoculars, they all tried to find a vantage point around them.

However, Lin Jin felt it was unnecessary as he seemed to have heard it clearly.

The sharp sound pierced through the hazy drizzle and the dim outline of buildings, penetrating his eardrums from three kilometers or even further away.

The sharp whistle was like some symbol of civilization, rekindling certain memories that had decayed in the acid rain.

It was a symbol more direct and imposing than a car or helicopter.

”Train! It’s a train with dozens of cars!”

The scout blurted out.

’A train... is still running?’ A hint of confusion flashed in Lin Jin’s eyes.

He felt his mind was a bit confused, but soon these emotions were suppressed by another more tangible fear.

The Corpse Pupas in the security pavilion moved.

Heavy footsteps, not like those of a human, came from the yard.

The sharp whistle had alarmed all zombies within several kilometers!

...

To the east of Changli County, at the freight station.

”Quick, quick, quick, where are the heavy machine guns, set them up, set them all up for me!”

”Run, everyone run!”

”The enemy is coming soon, what are you all dawdling for?!”

”A bunch of useless people, dig the trench a bit deeper, do you want to be fed to the zombies?!”

The shouts of the low-ranking officers echoed one after another at the freight station on the outermost part of Changli County.

The surviving Servant Soldiers wore rubber boots, stepping deeply and shallowly into the mud, sabotaging tracks, and digging deep pits.

The soldiers were building layers of defense on both sides of the tracks, ensuring that anything coming up the tracks could be covered from a 360° angle without any blind spots.

But what kind of creatures would choose to walk on the tracks during the apocalypse?

An elite Evolver soldier stood in a high-rise, frowning as he watched the people below busily like ants, ”With this firepower, even a Tier One Zombie tide can’t get through. The higher-ups even added three more layers, what were they thinking?”

A fellow nearby said with lingering fear, ”I heard Zhang Tie and his team also fell, only four people came back from the whole troop.”

Another gasped, ”How many? Four?!”

”Including He Jie’s team, the armed train has taken out nearly forty of our people.”

”Pigs don’t get killed like this, how many Evolvers do they have on the other side?”

”I heard just over a dozen, mainly relying on a metal manipulator and an armed-to-the-teeth train that even 7.62mm armor-piercing rounds can’t penetrate. That’s why the higher-ups want to garrison here and take them out at once, finish them directly!”

”Metal manipulator, no wonder, this thing really restrains us, but there are over a thousand people here today, almost like a synthetic battalion. Even if we pile them with shells, we can bury them alive.”

The other person didn’t refute but nodded in agreement.

Quantity leads to qualitative change.

When over a thousand armed soldiers equipped with light and heavy weaponry gather, they can already fight a proper battle.

And these thousand people are not garbage like the Servant Soldiers, but soldiers legitimately retired from various armies and then secretly trained by the company.

Even if the armed train could fly, it would be shot down on the spot!

”What exactly is this armed train doing, why such a deep enmity with us?”

”That... the grand team is here!”

The two immediately stood upright, their muscles tensed.

A tall man stepped out from the corridor behind them, his cold gaze sweeping over the two and the fortifications below, ”No matter which director is behind you, or what background you have, you’re under my command now. Anyone who messes up in today’s battle, I’ll execute them on the spot!”

The two felt a cold chill in their hearts.

This is no longer before the apocalypse, where camaraderie mattered; now, they’re post-apocalyptic mercenaries.

If Zhong Cheng kills them, no one will seek justice for them.

They immediately straightened their backs and responded loudly, ”Yes!”

At that moment, Zhong Cheng’s adjutant rushed in, glanced at the two soldiers, who sensibly left the room.

Only then did the adjutant speak in a low voice, ”Chairman Li and Chairman Wang have arrived, the entire board is present.”

Zhong Cheng frowned deeply, cursing inwardly.

These troublesome guys couldn’t just stay in the office waiting for results, what are they doing on the battlefield?

”Did they say anything?”

”Chairman Wang said not to meet her, go directly to see Li Wangchuan.”

Zhong Cheng paused in his stride, then resumed as if nothing was amiss.

...

The six-story building next to the platform had been cleaned out.

All obstacles between the top floor and the railway platform were removed.

The beige floor lay empty, with just two sofas in the center facing the window. A graceful woman sat on the sofa, gazing at the rain outside, while her assistant brewed coffee quietly beside her, steam rising, much like an ordinary rainy day before the apocalypse.

It was Wang Yi, director of the Steel Council.

”Do you really have such high hopes for this small company, the Steel Council?”

A somewhat elderly voice came from behind the woman.

A man, seemingly the same age as the woman, came over and naturally sat on the sofa.

Behind him, a woman with short hair in a gray skirt suit opened a huge suitcase, taking out tea sets and placing them aside, creating a peculiar symmetry with the assistant brewing coffee opposite.

”You look much older than me.”

Wang Yi said calmly, her tone carrying a deliberate sneer.

The man spread his hands carelessly, ”Just appearances, I’m actually doing much better than you think, I recently had another little daughter.”

”So you know some things can’t just be seen. Having another daughter, seems like you’ve done a lot of misdeeds.”

The man paused and then laughed, ”You’re always so sharp-tongued, but I’m curious about what’s inside the Steel Council.”

A trace of impatience flickered in Wang Yi’s eyes, ”You’re still the same, always looking to blame me for mistakes. Divorcing you was the best decision of my life.”

”Wait, let’s not talk about those old grudges. We’re over fifty now, tell me why you’re so optimistic about the Steel Council.”

”Naturally, it’s Li Wangchuan.”

”That kid, he’s quite impressive, but I heard he encountered some trouble.”

”Creating a crisis that leaves everyone in panic first, then stepping up to resolve it when everyone else is at a loss, I must say, he played it beautifully.”

A hint of admiration appeared in Wang Yi’s eyes.

”Oh?”

The man’s eyes were calm, but it was just a deeper level of arrogance.

”Familiar tactics indeed, but to play like this requires the ability to control the entire situation; not everyone is... Uncle Wang.”

A cold gleam flashed in Wang Yi’s eyes, ”You have no right to mention my father.”

The man bitterly waved his hand, suddenly as if recalling something, ”You’re not planning to marry your daughter to this kid, are you?”

”Why not? If I were twenty years younger, I would take him even if it meant losing face, for a man of such boldness.”

”But you’re old.”

”Shut up!”

The man furrowed his brow, accepting the hot tea the assistant handed over.

From start to finish, they mentioned Li Wangchuan in passing, and even the entire Steel Council had only him worthy of mention.

As for what trouble he faced.

Nobody cared.

Until that armed train, tearing through the rain, appeared before everyone.

The sharp whistle was like a whale’s cry, overturning the drizzle, stirring up monstrous waves.

The teacup halted near his lips, and the man stared in amazement at the menacingly modified armed train.

Are there still people running trains in the apocalypse?
