Yandere Stream

Kai couldn’t look away from the child standing on the tracks.

He had seen countless versions of himself throughout this impossible journey. Some had been older, carrying the weight of decades they should never have lived. Others had been broken by grief, shaped by choices Kai had never made, and turned into heroes, villains, prisoners, or something that no longer had a name. Yet none of them had disturbed him quite like this boy.

Because this wasn’t a possible future.

It wasn’t a warning.

It wasn’t the consequence of some road Kai might eventually walk down.

It was the beginning.

The child stood barefoot between the rails, wearing the same faded green shirt Kai remembered from the damaged photograph. His dark hair was untidy, his cheeks still carried the softness of childhood, and there was something painfully familiar about the way he smiled. Kai knew that face. He knew those eyes. He simply couldn’t understand why.

He slowly lowered the notebook in his hands.

”You’re me.”

The boy tilted his head, then nodded. ”Yes.”

Kai stared at him. ”Then why don’t I remember you?”

The boy’s smile disappeared.

”Because you decided I wasn’t important.”

Kai felt something tighten inside his chest. ”That’s not true.”

”It is.”

”No.” Kai shook his head. ”I wouldn’t do that.”

The child pointed toward Adrian. ”You remember him.”

His finger shifted toward Luna. ”You remember her.”

Then he pointed at himself.

”But you don’t remember me.”

Kai looked down at the photograph. Three children had once stood together beneath a summer sky. He recognized himself immediately. Adrian was beside him. But the third child’s face had been scratched away so thoroughly that the paper beneath it had nearly torn.

Kai’s fingers tightened around the photograph.

”Who is the third person?”

The child looked at him sadly.

”Me.”

Kai stared.

”That’s impossible.”

A faint smile returned to the boy’s face. ”You always say that.”

He stepped closer. His bare feet made no sound against the tracks.

”I was the first one.”

”The first what?”

”The first character.”

The words struck Kai harder than he expected.

Adrian moved closer, his expression becoming increasingly pale. ”Then who am I?”

The boy turned toward him.

”You’re the second.”

Something flickered behind Adrian’s eyes.

Kai felt pressure building inside his skull as memories began rising from somewhere he had buried so deeply that he had forgotten they existed.

He saw a bedroom.

A notebook lying open on a wooden desk.

His mother’s voice coming from somewhere behind him.

Adrian sitting beside him.

Another child sitting across from them.

Three names written carefully across a page.

Kai. Adrian. Finn.

Kai’s breath caught.

”Finn.”

The child nodded.

”Yes.”

Kai looked toward Adrian. ”Finn was the third.”

The child smiled.

”And you forgot all three of us.”

Luna stepped forward, confusion written across her face. ”Why?”

The boy looked at her for a long moment before answering.

”Because Kai couldn’t handle the ending.”

Kai felt his stomach sink.

”What ending?”

The child didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, Kai found himself looking at the empty space where his mother had once stood in his memories.

Then something inside him clicked.

”You weren’t characters.”

The child nodded.

”We were people.”

Kai’s face tightened. ”People who existed before the story?”

”Yes.”

”Then the story wasn’t fiction.”

”No.”

Kai stared at him.

”Then what was it?”

The child turned toward the endless railway disappearing into the darkness.

”A memory.”

The moment those words left his mouth, every light in the station turned white.

The change was so sudden that Kai raised an arm to shield his eyes. The warm glow of the trains disappeared beneath an overwhelming brightness, and the air seemed to become impossibly still.

The child looked toward the far end of the platform.

”It’s coming.”

Kai lowered his arm.

”Who?”

The boy looked directly at him.

”The thing that made you forget.”

Something appeared beyond the tracks.

At first, Kai couldn’t tell what he was seeing. Then a figure slowly emerged from the white haze.

The Reader.

But it wasn’t wearing the child’s face anymore.

It wasn’t Kai.

It wasn’t anyone.

There was no face at all.

Yet Kai understood what stood before them now.

The Reader wasn’t a person, a monster, an author, or some forgotten god. It was forgetting given form. Every abandoned memory, every erased name, every unfinished story, every dream that had been discarded and left behind had gathered into something vast enough to walk.

The Reader stepped onto the platform.

Reality began disappearing around it.

The tracks faded first, their polished steel becoming transparent before dissolving completely. Then sections of the station walls vanished. The benches disappeared. Even the first train began losing its shape, its beautiful body becoming translucent as though the very idea of its existence was being erased.

Luna grabbed Kai’s arm.

”What do we do?”

Kai stared at the approaching figure.

”I don’t know.”

The child gave a quiet laugh.

”You always say that.”

Kai looked at him sharply. ”Then tell me.”

The boy walked closer and placed one small hand against Kai’s chest.

”You have to remember.”

”I am remembering.”

”No.” The child’s expression became serious. ”You’re remembering the story.”

His fingers pressed gently against Kai’s chest.

”You need to remember yourself.”

Kai froze.

”What does that mean?”

The boy’s eyes filled with sadness.

”You were never the writer.”

Kai frowned. ”What?”

”You weren’t the character either.”

”Then what am I?”

For the first time, genuine sorrow appeared in the child’s expression.

”You’re the person who wanted them to exist.”

Kai felt the breath leave his lungs.

”What?”

”You were lonely.”

The words struck something buried inside him.

”You wanted someone who wouldn’t leave. Someone who would stay even after the story ended.”

The child pointed toward Adrian.

”That’s why you made Adrian.”

He then pointed toward the fading memory of Finn.

”That’s why you made Finn.”

Finally, he turned toward Luna.

”And that’s why you made Luna.”

Kai’s face went pale.

”Luna.”

He looked at her.

She stared back at him, frightened and confused.

The child continued. ”She was the last one.”

”No.”

”Yes.”

”No.”

”She was the one you couldn’t let go.”

Luna stepped toward him.

”Kai?”

Kai shook his head.

”You’re not a character.”

Luna frowned. ”I know.”

”No.” His voice cracked. ”I mean you were never supposed to be one.”

The child looked at Luna with an almost apologetic smile.

”You wrote everyone else because you wanted friends. But you wrote Luna because you wanted someone who could remember you.”

Kai stared at her.

She looked terrified.

”Remember what?”

The child answered softly.

”Everything.”

The world exploded into light.

Kai dropped to his knees as memories tore through him.

He saw Luna sitting beside him when they were children. He saw her laughing until she couldn’t breathe. He saw her crying when she thought nobody was watching. He saw the two of them reading together late into the night, promising each other that they would never forget what they had created.

Then the memories accelerated.

Years passed in seconds.

He saw countless versions of Luna across timelines that should never have existed. He watched her die. He watched her disappear. He watched her forget him. He watched her hate him. He watched her love him.

Different lives.

Different worlds.

Different endings.

Yet every version carried the same truth.

She always came back.

Kai screamed as the memories threatened to overwhelm him.

”I remember!”

The Reader stopped.

The child smiled.

”Good.”

Kai looked up, tears running down his face. ”I remember everything.”

The child shook his head.

”Not everything.”

Kai stared at him.

”What am I missing?”

The boy pointed toward Adrian.

”His choice.”

Kai turned.

Adrian stood several feet away, strangely calm despite the chaos surrounding them.

Kai understood.

”You remember what happened.”

Adrian nodded.

”You remember every ending.”

”Yes.”

”You remember every time I rewrote you.”

”Yes.”

Kai’s voice became quieter.

”All nine hundred and thirteen?”

A faint smile appeared on Adrian’s face.

”I remember all of them.”

Kai lowered his gaze.

”You should hate me.”

Adrian was silent for a long moment.

”Sometimes I did.”

Kai looked up.

Adrian stepped closer.

”But I also remembered why you kept trying.”

Kai’s eyes burned.

”You should still hate me.”

”Maybe.” Adrian smiled faintly. ”But I don’t want to spend another life hating the person who kept trying to save me.”

A broken laugh escaped Kai.

”You’re really annoying.”

Adrian’s smile widened.

”I learned from you.”

Before Kai could answer, the Reader moved.

A black arm erupted from the darkness and crossed the platform faster than any of them could react. It wrapped around Adrian and violently pulled him backward.

”Kai!”

Kai lunged forward and caught Adrian’s wrist.

For one terrifying moment, Adrian’s body hung between them, half pulled into the darkness.

”Don’t let go!” Adrian shouted.

”I’m not!”

Luna seized Kai’s arm. Daniel immediately grabbed Luna, and Noah grabbed Daniel. One after another, they formed a chain, anchoring themselves against the Reader’s impossible strength.

The platform cracked beneath their feet.

The darkness pulled harder.

Kai’s shoes slid across the stone.

”Why won’t you let him go?”

The Reader finally answered.

BECAUSE HE IS NOT FINISHED.

The voice shook the entire station.

Kai froze.

The Reader continued.

YOU KEEP THINKING HIS STORY IS ABOUT SURVIVAL.

The darkness tightened around Adrian.

IT ISN’T.

Adrian looked directly at Kai.

In that instant, Kai understood.

Adrian’s story had never been about escaping death. It had never been about defeating some final enemy or reaching an ending where everything became perfect.

It was about having the right to decide what his life meant.

Kai turned toward the Reader.

”Then stop deciding for him.”

Everything went silent.

Kai tightened his grip around Adrian’s wrist.

”Let him choose.”

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then the darkness loosened.

Adrian’s hand slipped free.

Kai pulled him back onto the platform, and the two of them collapsed beside each other.

The Reader remained motionless.

Then its voice filled the station again.

THEN CHOOSE.

The world disappeared.

There was no station.

No train.

No tracks.

No sky.

Everything became white.

When Kai opened his eyes, three enormous doors stood before them.

The first was marked RETURN.

The second was marked FORGET.

The third was marked CONTINUE.

Adrian stared at them.

Kai slowly pushed himself to his feet.

He looked at the doors, then at Adrian.

”This isn’t my choice.”

The Reader remained silent.

Kai stepped aside.

”It’s yours.”

Adrian walked toward the three doors.

He stopped in front of them and looked back at everyone who had followed him this far. Luna stood beside Kai. Daniel and Noah were behind them. Even the little boy watched silently.

Adrian smiled.

”I know what I’m choosing.”

Kai felt his heart begin to pound.

Adrian reached for the third door.

CONTINUE.

His fingers closed around the handle.

For one impossible moment, everything seemed to stop.

Then Adrian opened the door.

Beyond it was an ordinary summer afternoon.

The sky was clear and blue. Warm sunlight covered a quiet residential street. A small house stood at the end of the road, its porch light broken and hanging slightly crooked. Beneath a large tree sat two younger boys.

Kai.

Adrian.

They were younger than Kai had ever seen them in his memories.

They were laughing about something neither of them could remember.

Then a little girl came running down the street toward them.

Luna.

Kai stared at the scene.

”That’s...”

Adrian smiled.

”Home.”

He stepped through the doorway.

Then he stopped.

For a moment, he simply stood there with his back toward Kai.

Finally, he looked over his shoulder.

”Kai.”

”Yeah?”

Adrian smiled.

”Come on.”

Kai frowned.

”Where?”

Adrian’s smile widened.

”You promised you’d take me home.”

Kai’s expression changed.

Only then did he understand.

The train had never been taking Adrian home.

It had been taking all of them.

Not toward some distant destination.

Not toward another ending.

It had been taking them back to the moment before the story began, before the first page had been written, before any of them had been forced into roles they never chose.

Kai took one final look behind him.

The Reader was still standing in the distance.

Watching.

Waiting.

Kai turned away from it and stepped through the doorway.

As the white light closed around him, he heard the Reader whisper one final sentence from somewhere beyond the threshold.

”Now... let’s see what happens when you remember how to begin.”
