Yandere Stream

The first thing Kai noticed wasn’t the train.

It was the silence.

Not ordinary silence, but something far stranger. One moment, distant traffic drifted through the broken windows of Ashbridge Station. Somewhere outside, a motorcycle accelerated through the industrial district, and the wind rattled loose sheets of metal on the roof of an abandoned warehouse. The city had been alive only seconds ago.

Then everything stopped.

Kai slowly turned toward the station entrance. The front doors remained open, revealing the street outside exactly as they had left it. Daniel’s car still sat parked beneath a flickering streetlamp. The buildings beyond remained unchanged, and the warm glow of storefront signs painted the sidewalks in familiar colors.

Yet nothing moved.

No headlights passed through the intersection. No leaves skittered across the pavement. The insects that had gathered around the streetlights hung motionless in the air. Even the smoke rising from a distant factory chimney had frozen halfway into the sky, suspended as though time itself had forgotten to keep flowing.

Luna noticed it a moment later. Her eyes widened as she stared through the doorway.

”Kai.”

”I see it.”

Daniel looked between them and swallowed hard. ”Please tell me that’s normal.”

Kai let out a humorless laugh. ”Nothing about tonight is normal.”

”I know that,” Daniel muttered, rubbing both hands over his face. ”I just wanted someone else to say it out loud.”

Another metallic clack echoed through the station before anyone could say more. This time it sounded closer.

The rails beneath Platform One began to hum.

Kai felt the vibration through the soles of his shoes before he heard it. The sensation traveled up through his legs and settled somewhere deep in his chest. He looked down and immediately understood why Daniel had gone pale.

The tracks were changing.

For decades, no train had passed through Ashbridge Station. Rust coated every rail, and weeds had pushed stubbornly through the wooden sleepers. The station had belonged to history for longer than most people could remember.

Now history was reversing itself.

The rust slowly peeled away from the steel like a layer of old paint. The rails brightened until they gleamed beneath the station lights. The weeds shriveled into dust and scattered across the platform before disappearing entirely. It wasn’t happening quickly, yet somehow that made it more disturbing. It felt deliberate.

As though something was preparing the station for a guest.

Daniel instinctively stepped backward. ”Okay. I definitely saw that.”

”We all did,” Luna replied quietly.

Kai moved toward the edge of the platform, unable to pull his eyes away from the darkness beyond the tracks.

It wasn’t ordinary darkness.

He had spent enough nights exploring abandoned places to know the difference. This darkness possessed depth. Distance. Weight. It felt less like the absence of light and more like an endless space waiting beyond reality itself.

Daniel switched on his flashlight and aimed the beam into the tunnel-like void ahead. The light traveled several yards before abruptly vanishing.

Not fading.

Vanishing.

As if it had never existed.

Kai frowned. ”That’s impossible.”

”No,” Noah said softly as he stepped beside him. ”It isn’t.”

The certainty in his voice drew everyone’s attention.

Kai glanced sideways. ”You’ve remembered something else.”

Noah nodded slowly. His gaze remained fixed on the shining rails stretching into the blackness.

”Only fragments,” he admitted. ”But I know I’ve stood here before.”

”When?”

”I don’t know.”

His expression grew distant. ”I just remember standing on this platform and waiting.”

”For what?”

Noah hesitated.

Then he quietly said, ”Not what. Who.”

The answer lingered heavily between them.

Steam drifted from the darkness ahead.

It rolled lazily across the platform, weaving around rusted benches and abandoned ticket machines like pale ghosts wandering through forgotten memories. The smell arrived seconds later.

Fresh coal.

Burning oil.

Rain-soaked iron.

Kai closed his eyes for a brief moment.

The scent struck him with an unexpected sense of nostalgia. It reminded him of a railway museum his father had taken him to when he was young. He could still remember standing beside an old locomotive while a guide explained how steam engines had once connected entire countries.

The memory felt strangely vivid.

Almost recent.

When Kai opened his eyes again, the station no longer felt abandoned.

It felt awake.

Then a light appeared.

At first it was so distant that Kai mistook it for a star. A tiny white point suspended within the darkness. But stars didn’t move.

This one did.

The light steadily grew larger as it approached. It never flickered. Never wavered. It cut through the endless black with impossible clarity.

A locomotive headlamp.

Daniel stared in disbelief. ”No way.”

Nobody answered.

Every person on the platform was watching.

The light continued forward at an unhurried pace, as though time itself meant nothing to whatever traveled beyond the darkness.

Above them, the station clock suddenly ticked.

The sound was loud enough to make Kai look up.

The enormous clock had been frozen at 11:58 ever since they arrived.

Now the second hand moved.

Once.

Twice.

Then the minute hand jerked forward.

11:59.

The ticking echoed throughout the station with unnatural weight.

Each second felt heavier than the last.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

The approaching train never accelerated.

It simply continued forward at the same measured pace, confident that it would arrive exactly when it intended to.

Luna moved closer to Kai until their shoulders nearly touched.

”Tell me honestly,” she said quietly.

Kai looked at her.

”Are you scared?”

He considered the question carefully before nodding.

”Yeah.”

A faint smile touched her lips.

”Good.”

Kai blinked. ”Good?”

”If you’d said no, I’d know you’d stopped being yourself.”

For a moment, despite everything happening around them, Kai smiled.

”Thanks.”

Luna lightly nudged his shoulder.

”Don’t make me regret it.”

The headlamp’s glow swept across the station, revealing details hidden in shadow. Old luggage carts stood abandoned near the far wall. A cracked vending machine reflected the passing light. Faded advertisements peeled from the brickwork like fragments of forgotten stories.

One poster caught Kai’s eye.

Its colors had almost completely faded, but a few words remained visible.

Every journey begins...

The rest had been torn away.

Before he could read further, the train emerged from the darkness.

Every conversation stopped.

Every thought vanished.

The locomotive was beautiful.

Not terrifying.

Not ghostly.

Beautiful.

Its black metal body gleamed like polished obsidian beneath the station lights. Brass fittings reflected warm golden highlights, while thick clouds of steam drifted gracefully around its enormous wheels. Behind it stretched several passenger cars painted deep emerald green with gold trim that shone as though freshly restored.

There wasn’t a single trace of rust anywhere.

The train looked untouched by time.

As though decades had passed around it while it remained exactly the same.

The locomotive rolled into the station with quiet dignity. Kai had expected noise. A roar. Something dramatic.

Instead, the train sounded almost respectful.

Like a guest arriving at an important meeting.

The brakes hissed softly.

Steam billowed across the platform.

Then the train came to a perfect stop.

Silence followed.

No conductor emerged.

No announcements echoed through the station.

The doors remained closed.

Several seconds passed.

Then several more.

The tension became unbearable.

Daniel finally broke it.

”That’s somehow worse.”

Before anyone could respond, one of the passenger doors clicked open.

Warm golden light spilled onto the platform.

A man stepped down.

He appeared to be in his late fifties, tall and impeccably dressed in a dark conductor’s uniform from another era. Silver hair rested neatly beneath a peaked cap, and white gloves covered his hands. Everything about him seemed precise, from his polished shoes to the pocket watch hanging from his vest.

He adjusted his cap and looked directly at Kai.

Not Luna.

Not Noah.

Not Daniel.

Kai.

Then he smiled.

The expression wasn’t warm.

Nor was it cruel.

It was professional.

The smile of a concierge greeting a guest whose reservation had been expected for a very long time.

”Good evening,” he said.

His voice was calm and refined, carrying easily across the platform.

”I do apologize.”

He glanced toward the station clock.

”It seems we’ve arrived ahead of schedule.”

Kai felt a chill crawl down his spine.

There was something deeply unsettling about the conductor.

Not because he seemed dangerous.

Because he seemed ordinary.

Perfectly ordinary.

The way predators often did.

The conductor opened his pocket watch and studied it briefly before looking back at Kai.

”Mr. Mercer,” he said.

Kai’s heart skipped.

”You’ve kept the train waiting.”

The watch snapped shut with a soft click.

The conductor’s gaze shifted past Kai and settled on Adrian, who stood several steps behind the group.

For the first time, the man’s expression changed.

The smile faded ever so slightly.

Curiosity replaced it.

Real curiosity.

The conductor stared at Adrian for several seconds before speaking again.

”And I see you’ve brought someone who doesn’t yet belong to any destination.”

The platform grew colder.

Even the steam seemed to hesitate.

The conductor continued studying Adrian with unmistakable interest.

Then, in a voice that was almost a whisper, he said,

”Now that’s something I haven’t seen in a very long time.”
