Yandere Stream

Kai stood motionless before the open train doors long after they had swung wide. His mother waited on the platform beyond them, looking exactly as she had in his memories. Her dark hair framed a face worn by years of quiet exhaustion, yet the same gentle warmth remained in her eyes. For a moment, he could only stare. Luna stopped a few steps behind him, sensing the change in his expression.

”Kai?”

He barely heard her.

His mother smiled softly. ”You’ve grown.”

The words tightened something deep in his chest. He swallowed before answering. ”You’re not real.”

She tilted her head slightly, studying him. ”Does that matter?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because my mother is dead.”

The smile faded from her face, replaced by a sadness that felt painfully familiar. ”I know.”

Kai stepped onto the platform. ”You died when I was seventeen.”

”I remember.”

”Then you’re not her.”

”No,” she admitted quietly.

”Then what are you?”

Her gaze drifted briefly toward the train before returning to him. ”A memory.”

Kai’s expression hardened. ”Whose memory?”

”Yours.”

He shook his head immediately. ”That doesn’t make sense. I remember you.”

A faint smile returned to her lips. ”That’s exactly why I can be.”

Luna stepped off the train and approached cautiously. The moment her shoes touched the platform, the woman turned toward her.

”You came too.”

Luna frowned. ”Do I know you?”

”You don’t remember me.”

”Should I?”

”Not yet.”

Kai moved between them before the conversation could continue. ”Enough. Where’s Adrian?”

His mother’s gaze shifted toward the darkness stretching beyond the platform. ”Still running.”

”From the Reader?”

”From the ending.”

Kai narrowed his eyes. ”What does that mean?”

”It means he’s finally doing what you never could.”

”And what’s that?”

”Refusing to become what the story expects him to be.”

Kai looked toward the darkness. ”Then we need to find him.”

”You do.”

She paused before continuing. ”But first, you need to remember why you created him.”

Kai’s jaw tightened. ”I didn’t create Adrian.”

”No,” she said gently. ”You created the reason he exists.”

The world shifted before he could respond.

The platform dissolved. The walls faded. The tracks vanished.

Suddenly, Kai found himself standing in his childhood bedroom.

He was six years old again.

His mother sat cross-legged on the floor beside a notebook while a younger version of Kai crouched over the pages with a pencil in hand.

”What are you making?” she asked.

”A person.”

”What kind of person?”

”A lonely one.”

”Why?”

Young Kai shrugged. ”Because nobody likes lonely people.”

His mother smiled. ”So you’re going to give him friends?”

”Yes.”

”Family?”

”Yes.”

”Enemies?”

”Maybe.”

She laughed softly. ”Why maybe?”

The boy looked down at his drawing. ”Because if nothing bad happens, nobody cares.”

His mother became quiet. Watching from across the room, Kai felt a pang of recognition. He remembered this conversation, but not like this. For years he had believed she had taught him how to write. Now he realized she had taught him something far more important.

She had taught him why.

”What’s his name?” she asked.

”Adrian.”

”And what does Adrian want?”

Young Kai thought for a moment before answering. ”He wants to go home.”

His mother smiled warmly. ”Then make sure he finds it.”

The memory shifted.

Kai was fourteen now, seated at the same desk. The notebook had grown thick with pages. Adrian was no longer a simple drawing. He had become a living presence in the story, someone Kai wrote about every night.

His mother stood nearby, watching.

”Do you still love him?” she asked one evening.

Teenage Kai looked up. ”Of course.”

”Even when he does things you don’t like?”

”Yeah.”

”Even when he makes mistakes?”

”Yeah.”

”Even when he becomes someone you don’t recognize?”

Kai hesitated only briefly before nodding.

His mother smiled. ”Good.”

”Why?”

”Because that’s when you know you’ve created someone instead of something.”

The scene changed again.

Kai was seventeen.

The notebook was gone, replaced by a glowing computer screen. Hundreds of pages filled the document open before him. Adrian’s story had grown into something vast.

Kai sat crying.

His mother stood behind him.

”What happened?”

”He died.”

”Again?”

Kai nodded.

”I can fix it.”

”You could.”

”Then why shouldn’t I?”

She rested a hand on his shoulder. ”Because you can’t spend your life saving someone from an ending.”

Kai stared at the screen. ”What am I supposed to do?”

”Let him choose.”

”He’ll choose wrong.”

”Maybe.”

”Then he’ll die.”

”Maybe.”

Kai turned toward her. ”Then what’s the point?”

She looked directly into his eyes before answering.

”Because if you never let him choose, he’ll never really be alive.”

The memory shattered.

Kai opened his eyes and found himself back on the platform.

His mother stood before him exactly where she had been.

”You remembered.”

Kai wiped at his eyes. ”I told him to choose.”

”Yes.”

”Then why did I forget?”

”Because you couldn’t accept his choice.”

His voice grew quiet. ”What did he choose?”

She smiled sadly. ”To die.”

The answer hit him like a blow.

”No.”

”He chose to sacrifice himself to save everyone else.”

”And I couldn’t accept it.”

”No.”

”So I rewrote him.”

”Yes.”

”Again.”

”Yes.”

”And again.”

”Yes.”

Kai laughed bitterly. ”Nine hundred and thirteen times.”

She nodded.

”Every time he made the same choice.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because that was who he was.”

Kai closed his eyes as a tear slipped down his cheek.

”I kept changing him.”

”Yes.”

”Until he finally changed himself.”

”Yes.”

A hollow laugh escaped him. ”I thought I was saving him.”

His mother stepped closer. ”You were.”

Kai looked up.

”But not in the way you believed.”

A metallic crash suddenly echoed from somewhere inside the tunnel.

Luna spun toward the sound. ”Something’s coming.”

Everyone looked into the darkness.

A train emerged.

It wasn’t the train that had brought them here.

This locomotive was old and battered. Rust covered its sides. Its windows were cracked. Its lights flickered weakly against the darkness.

Across the front, painted in large faded letters, was a single word.

ADRIAN.

Kai stepped forward as the train ground to a halt.

The doors opened.

Adrian fell out.

Luna caught him before he hit the ground.

”Adrian!”

Kai rushed forward and grabbed his shoulders. Blood ran down one side of Adrian’s face, and his clothes were torn from whatever ordeal he had endured, but he was alive.

”Are you okay?”

Adrian nodded weakly. ”I think so.”

”What happened?”

”I ran.”

”From the Reader?”

”Yes.”

”Where is it?”

Adrian glanced back toward the train. ”It’s coming.”

Kai’s expression hardened. ”How long?”

”Not long.”

Then Adrian’s eyes shifted past him and widened.

”Who is that?”

Kai turned.

The platform was empty.

His mother was gone.

He stared at the space where she had stood only moments before.

”She was...”

Luna looked at him. ”Who?”

Kai couldn’t answer.

Instead, he noticed something lying on the ground.

A notebook.

He bent down and picked it up.

The cover was worn with age. His own handwriting was scrawled across the front.

But beneath his name was another.

ADRIAN MERCER.

Kai stared.

”What...”

Adrian stepped closer. ”That’s my name.”

”No.”

Adrian frowned.

Kai turned the notebook over and discovered an old photograph tucked inside.

A little boy stood smiling.

Kai.

Beside him was another child.

Adrian.

Behind them stood Kai’s mother.

Three figures.

And yet something felt wrong.

Kai stared longer.

”There’s someone missing.”

”Who?” Adrian asked.

Kai flipped the photograph over.

Four words were written across the back.

THE FIRST ONE FORGOT.

The station lights died instantly.

Darkness swallowed the platform.

Then the Reader stepped from the tunnel.

This time it wasn’t faceless.

It wore a face Kai recognized immediately.

His own.

Younger.

Much younger.

A six-year-old boy.

The same child from the first memory.

The Reader smiled.

”I remember you.”

Kai froze.

The child pointed directly at him.

”You forgot me.”

Behind him, the tunnel filled with blinding white light.

”And that’s why everything happened.”
