Yandere Stream

No one moved.

The new railway continued rising through the stone with a slow, almost graceful inevitability. There was no explosion, no cracking concrete, and no violent display of power. The platform simply made room. Ancient stone folded around polished rails as though it had always been waiting for them to return. Dust lifted gently into the air before settling again without a sound.

Within less than a minute, a complete railway line stretched through the center of Platform Zero.

It didn’t belong to the conductor’s train.

It didn’t connect to the stranger’s locomotive.

It ran perfectly between them.

Perfectly straight.

Perfectly silent.

Kai stared at it.

Something about the rails made his eyes ache. Unlike the other two lines, these tracks weren’t entirely steel. The metal shimmered faintly, changing whenever he looked away. One moment it resembled polished silver. The next, black iron. Then glass. Then something that seemed neither metal nor material at all. Every glance revealed a different possibility. Every blink rewrote its appearance.

Daniel squinted. ”Is it just me, or are the tracks changing?”

”What?” Luna asked.

”The color. The shape. Everything.”

She studied them for several seconds before nodding. ”They are.”

”No,” Noah said quietly.

Everyone looked at him.

His face had gone pale.

”They aren’t changing.”

”What do you mean?” Kai asked.

Noah swallowed hard. ”They’re trying to decide what they are.”

Silence settled over the station.

Even the steam hanging between the trains seemed frozen.

Kai slowly turned toward the conductor. ”You’ve never seen this before.”

The old man answered without hesitation.

”No.”

The stranger folded his arms across his chest.

”I have.”

Every eye shifted toward him.

Kai frowned. ”You have?”

”Once.”

”When?”

The stranger’s gaze drifted somewhere beyond the station, beyond the tracks, beyond memory itself.

”So long ago,” he said softly, ”that I still remembered my own name.”

The conductor closed his eyes.

”I was hoping you wouldn’t say that.”

”You already knew.”

”I suspected.”

The stranger released a quiet sigh.

”I never wanted to see another one.”

Kai’s patience finally snapped.

”Another what?”

For several seconds neither man answered.

Then the conductor spoke.

”A Choice Line.”

The words hung in the air.

Daniel frowned immediately.

”That explains absolutely nothing.”

”It explains everything,” the stranger replied.

Kai walked closer to the new railway.

The rails emitted no heat.

No vibration.

No sound.

Nothing.

Yet standing near them filled him with an indescribable sensation.

Possibility.

Not hope.

Not destiny.

Possibility.

It felt like standing before an unwritten page.

Like holding a pen above blank paper while knowing every future sentence was still undecided.

Without realizing it, he reached out.

”Don’t.”

The conductor’s voice cracked across the platform so sharply that Kai froze.

The old man’s calm had vanished completely.

”Why?” Kai asked.

The conductor stared at the rails.

”Because no one touches a Choice Line until...”

He stopped himself.

”Until what?”

His eyes slowly found Adrian.

”...until it chooses who asked for it.”

Adrian blinked.

”I didn’t ask for anything.”

”No,” the stranger agreed quietly.

”You didn’t.”

Adrian looked even more confused.

”Then why is it here?”

The stranger’s smile carried a strange sadness.

”You existed.”

”And sometimes...”

His gaze drifted toward the rails.

”...that’s enough.”

Luna stepped beside Kai.

”I don’t like this.”

Neither did he.

Something about the Choice Line felt fundamentally different from everything else they’d encountered.

The conductor’s railway represented journeys.

The stranger’s represented beginnings.

Both had rules.

Both had purpose.

This line felt unfinished.

Like a sentence abandoned halfway through.

The station clock ticked once.

Then stopped.

Every lamp flickered simultaneously.

The air grew warm.

Not hot.

Comfortable.

The kind of warmth that reminded Kai of home.

Rain tapping softly against a bedroom window.

A blanket pulled over his shoulders.

His mother’s voice calling him downstairs for dinner.

The smell of food drifting through the house.

The feeling vanished as suddenly as it had appeared.

Daniel frowned.

”Did anyone else feel that?”

”Yeah,” Kai answered.

Luna nodded.

”So did I.”

Noah hadn’t moved.

Tears were running silently down his face.

Nobody had noticed until then.

Kai immediately stepped toward him.

”Noah?”

Noah didn’t answer.

He was staring at the Choice Line.

”I remembered...”

His voice trembled.

”...my mother.”

The words hit harder than anyone expected.

Kai felt something tighten painfully in his chest.

”You remembered her?”

”For a second.”

A shaky laugh escaped Noah.

”I forgot her face years ago.”

His shoulders trembled.

”But just now...”

Fresh tears rolled down his cheeks.

”...I remembered the way she’d brush my hair before school.”

No one spoke.

No one could.

”It only lasted a heartbeat,” Noah whispered.

”But she was real again.”

Silence filled the station.

Not uncomfortable silence.

The kind that forms when words become too small.

The stranger watched Noah with quiet understanding.

”That’s what the Choice Line does.”

Kai looked toward him.

”It gives memories back?”

”No.”

The answer came immediately.

”It gives possibilities back.”

The stranger walked slowly toward the rails.

”People think memory is the opposite of forgetting.”

He shook his head.

”It isn’t.”

His hand rested lightly against his chest.

”The opposite of forgetting...”

His voice softened.

”...is having another chance.”

The words echoed through Kai.

Another chance.

He thought of every regret he’d ever carried.

Every conversation left unfinished.

Every apology never spoken.

Every person lost before he had been ready to let them go.

If a place truly existed that could return possibilities...

What wouldn’t people sacrifice for it?

The thought frightened him.

Apparently it frightened the conductor too.

”No.”

The single word rang through the station.

The stranger looked at him.

”No?”

”You know what happened last time.”

Silence.

The stranger lowered his eyes.

”I do.”

”You know why this line was buried.”

”...Yes.”

”You know how many stories ended.”

The stranger nodded once.

”I remember.”

The conductor turned toward the group.

Toward Kai.

Toward Luna.

Toward Daniel.

Toward Noah.

Finally...

Toward Adrian.

”There is a reason every railway eventually leads forward.”

His gaze settled on the Choice Line.

”But this one...”

His voice became barely audible.

”...offers people the chance to walk backward.”

Nobody breathed.

Kai understood.

Not completely.

But enough.

The warmth.

The memories.

Noah remembering his mother.

The Choice Line wasn’t tempting people with power.

It wasn’t tempting them with immortality.

It was tempting them with loss.

With everything they wished they could have back.

A soft sound interrupted the silence.

Footsteps.

Not theirs.

Kai turned.

His stomach dropped.

The elderly woman who had boarded the conductor’s train was gone.

Standing near the Choice Line was a little boy.

Seven years old.

Holding a faded stuffed rabbit beneath one arm.

He looked around the station with wide eyes.

Confused.

Hopeful.

Then his face lit up.

”Mom?”

No one answered.

The boy smiled anyway.

”I know you’re here.”

Every hair on Kai’s arms stood up.

The conductor closed his eyes.

”...It has begun.”

The boy took a single step toward the Choice Line.

Then another.

The rails shimmered.

Silver.

Glass.

Iron.

Light.

And somewhere deep beneath the station...

Something answered his footsteps.

A low sound rolled upward through the earth.

Not a train whistle.

Not machinery.

Not a voice.

It sounded like a door opening.

An impossibly large door.

The rails brightened.

The boy smiled wider.

And for the first time since the Choice Line appeared...

Kai saw movement within the tracks themselves.

Shadows.

Hundreds of them.

Walking toward the station from somewhere impossibly far away.
