Yandere Stream

The apartment fell into a silence so complete that even the ticking of the kitchen clock seemed unnaturally loud. Nobody spoke. Nobody moved. The silver fountain pen rested on the wooden table where it had finished writing its impossible message. The ink was still fresh, glistening beneath the afternoon light filtering through the kitchen window.

Protagonist not yet assigned.

Kai stared at the words, willing them to disappear.

They didn’t.

Daniel was the first to react.

”Okay.” He cleared his throat. ”I’ve officially reached the point where I have absolutely no clue what’s going on.”

Luna gave a small, strained laugh, though there wasn’t much humor behind it. ”I think we crossed that point about a hundred Chapters ago.”

”Fair enough.”

Normally, Daniel’s jokes would have eased the tension. This time, nobody smiled.

Adrian looked between each of them, confusion written plainly across his face. He hadn’t seen the words appear. As far as he knew, four strangers had suddenly gone deathly pale for no reason at all.

”Can someone explain?” His voice was calm, but only barely. ”I’ve walked into this apartment, everyone keeps looking at me like I’m carrying a bomb, and now nobody wants to answer my questions.”

Kai slowly picked up the fountain pen. The instant his fingers wrapped around it, the black words faded from the tabletop until the wood looked untouched. He slipped the pen into his pocket.

”Sit down.”

Adrian hesitated before finally doing so.

For a long moment, Kai simply studied him. Adrian looked normal—painfully normal. He had the posture of someone who spent too much time sitting at a computer. There were faint dark circles beneath his eyes, like someone who hadn’t slept properly in weeks. A tiny scar crossed the knuckle of his left thumb, probably from some childhood accident he’d long forgotten.

Nothing about him screamed supernatural. Nothing about him suggested he was connected to Authors, Witnesses, or abandoned stories.

And yet, Kai had learned the hard way that appearances meant very little.

”You said,” Kai began carefully, ”that you’ve been losing your memories.”

Adrian nodded. ”They’re not exactly disappearing.”

”What do you mean?”

”It’s...” He searched for the words. ”Imagine opening a photo album. The pictures are all there, but every face is blurry. You know they’re important. You know you loved them. You just...” His shoulders slumped. ”...can’t remember why.”

Noah closed his eyes. His expression tightened.

Luna noticed immediately. ”You’ve heard that before.”

Noah shook his head. ”Not heard. Lived.”

Everyone looked at him.

”When I first woke up, I remembered facts. I knew how to tie my shoes. I knew how to cook. I knew my name. But I couldn’t remember becoming myself.”

His gaze drifted toward Adrian.

”He’s going through something similar.”

”No.”

The little girl’s voice came quietly from the doorway.

Everyone except Kai and Noah remained oblivious to her presence.

”It’s worse.”

Kai looked toward her. ”How?”

She stepped into the kitchen, her yellow dress swaying gently around her knees. The red crayon behind her ear caught the sunlight for a brief moment as she looked toward Adrian with unmistakable sadness.

”He isn’t forgetting.” She paused. ”He hasn’t happened yet.”

A chill crawled down Kai’s spine.

”What does that mean?”

The little girl didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she walked over to the window. Outside, children chased one another across the courtyard. Cars rolled past. An old woman watered flowers on her balcony. Life continued without caring about stories.

Finally, she spoke.

”Every person begins as a possibility.”

Kai frowned. ”So?”

”Most possibilities become choices. Those choices become memories. Those memories become a life.”

She turned around.

”But sometimes...” Her voice softened. ”...a possibility never chooses.”

Silence settled over the room.

Kai slowly looked back at Adrian. He was laughing awkwardly with Daniel now, trying to break the uncomfortable atmosphere without realizing the conversation taking place around him.

He looked real.

He sounded real.

He felt real.

But according to the little girl, his life hadn’t started.

”Can he hear us?” Kai asked quietly.

She shook her head.

”No. He only hears what’s meant for him.”

”What does that even mean?”

She smiled faintly. ”It means stories protect themselves.”

Kai hated that answer. He was beginning to think every impossible thing in existence communicated exclusively through riddles.

The little girl seemed to notice his frustration.

”I’m trying.”

”I know.”

”No.” She shook her head. ”I mean... I’m trying to remember too.”

Kai blinked.

”You forget things?”

She laughed softly.

”I remember everyone else.” Her eyes dropped to her own hands. ”...I’m starting to forget myself.”

The words hit Kai harder than he expected.

He remembered Finn, the forgotten narrator. He remembered Noah, an abandoned revision. How many others were there? How many people existed only because someone had almost written them—or stopped writing them?

The realization made his chest feel strangely heavy.

Stories weren’t just adventures anymore.

They were responsibility.

Daniel suddenly clapped his hands together.

”So. I’ve decided we’re doing this the normal way.”

Everyone looked at him.

He pointed at Adrian.

”You.”

”What?”

”What do you actually remember?”

Adrian blinked.

”I remember waking up this morning.”

”Good.”

”I remember brushing my teeth.”

”Excellent.”

”I remember taking the subway.”

”Keep going.”

”I remember...” His voice faltered.

Silence.

The color slowly drained from his face.

”I don’t.”

Daniel frowned. ”What?”

”I don’t remember leaving my apartment.”

”You just said—”

”I know what I said.”

Adrian’s breathing became uneven.

”I remember being on the subway. I remember arriving here. But...” He squeezed his eyes shut. ”I can’t remember where I got on.”

Nobody spoke.

”I know I have an apartment. I know I pay rent. I know I own clothes.” His voice cracked. ”But every memory before noon feels like... reading somebody else’s diary.”

Kai noticed something then.

Adrian wasn’t panicking.

Not because he wasn’t afraid.

Because this confusion had become normal.

He’d been living with it long enough that he’d started accepting it.

That realization was somehow even sadder.

A soft breeze drifted through the open kitchen window. The pages inside one of Noah’s moving boxes rustled.

Nobody touched them.

Yet one sheet slowly floated free.

It glided gently across the apartment until it landed in front of Kai.

There was no Chapter title. No dialogue. No narration.

Just one sentence written neatly across the top.

Every story begins with someone asking who they are.

Kai stared at the page before looking at Adrian.

Who are you?

It sounded like such a simple question.

Until you no longer knew the answer.

Kai folded the paper once and slipped it into his pocket beside the fountain pen. He looked around the room at Daniel, Luna, Noah, and finally Adrian.

Whatever was happening now, it was different from everything that had come before.

There were no loops.

No rewritten timelines.

No Author pulling invisible strings.

This mystery felt quieter.

More human.

Which somehow made it even more unsettling.

Kai leaned forward and rested his elbows on the table.

”Adrian.”

Adrian looked up.

”Yeah?”

Kai held his gaze for several seconds before asking the question that suddenly felt more important than any prophecy.

”When you look in the mirror...”

He paused.

”...whose face do you expect to see?”

Adrian opened his mouth to answer.

Then stopped.

His expression slowly changed.

Not into fear.

Into realization.

Because for the first time...

He understood that he had never once asked himself that question.
