Yandere Stream

The sound came from inside Kai’s chest. It wasn’t a heartbeat, and it wasn’t pain. It felt as though something sharp and deliberate was scratching against the inside of his ribs, carving words into him one stroke at a time. He grabbed his chest and stumbled backward as Ashbridge Station blurred around him. The third railway twisted out of focus. The trains, the conductor, Finn, and Adrian stretched into streaks of light and shadow. Another scratch echoed through him, followed by another. Something was writing inside him.

”Kai!”

Luna’s voice cut through the chaos with startling clarity. Strong. Familiar. Real.

He felt her catch him before he hit the ground. The world flickered violently around them, shifting between Ashbridge Station, endless darkness, a quiet living room, and places he couldn’t recognize. Some felt distant, while others carried an impossible sense of familiarity. Then the scratching intensified. Kai screamed, and the sound shattered reality itself. The platform cracked like glass. The frozen city beyond the station dissolved into fragments. The rails unraveled into lines of black ink. Everything became white, then black, then white again.

Kai collapsed to his knees. Luna dropped beside him and grabbed his face, forcing him to focus.

”Look at me.”

He tried.

He failed.

Her face refused to stay the same. Every blink rewrote her features. Young. Old. Familiar. Unfamiliar. A stranger. Someone he loved. A child. A woman. Someone he had known forever. Someone he had never met.

”Luna...”

His voice trembled.

”What?”

”I can’t remember your face.”

She froze. The words struck her harder than any physical blow could have. Kai reached toward her instinctively, and his fingertips brushed her cheek. Warm. Real.

”I know you,” he whispered, his voice breaking. ”I know I know you.”

Tears gathered in Luna’s eyes. She leaned forward until her forehead rested against his.

”Then hold onto that.”

Kai closed his eyes. The scratching inside his chest grew louder. He could feel words carving themselves into his bones. Names. Memories. Stories. Entire lives. Then, without intending to, he spoke.

”I love you.”

Silence followed.

Luna stared at him. Kai looked just as shocked as she did.

”I...”

She shook her head and pressed her forehead against his more firmly.

”Don’t explain.”

For a few precious seconds, neither moved.

Then the scratching stopped.

Everything vanished.

Kai opened his eyes and found himself standing inside a small room bathed in afternoon sunlight. Dust drifted lazily through golden beams spilling from a nearby window. A television played softly in the background. A children’s book lay open on the floor beside a toy train. At a wooden table near the center of the room sat a little boy.

Kai.

Six years old.

The child gripped a pencil with both hands, concentrating so intensely that his tongue stuck slightly from the corner of his mouth. Across from him sat a woman.

His mother.

Or at least, the person he remembered as his mother.

She smiled warmly.

”What are you drawing?”

”A story.”

”What kind of story?”

”About a boy.”

”What boy?”

”I don’t know.”

The child frowned thoughtfully before his face lit up.

”He doesn’t have a name yet.”

His mother laughed softly.

”Then you should give him one.”

Young Kai thought for several seconds.

”Adrian.”

Adult Kai’s breath caught.

The child immediately returned to drawing. A stick figure. A house. A train. Another figure standing beside the boy. Someone with messy hair. Someone watching over him.

Adult Kai stepped closer.

”Who’s that?”

Young Kai looked up.

”That’s me.”

His mother smiled.

”You can’t put yourself into every story.”

”Why not?”

”Because you’re the one telling it.”

Young Kai frowned.

”Then who tells my story?”

The smile disappeared from the woman’s face. For the first time, she looked afraid. Not for herself, but for him.

Kai watched carefully as she reached across the table and gently took the pencil from the child’s hand.

”Sometimes,” she said softly, ”the person telling the story doesn’t know they’re inside one.”

Young Kai didn’t understand.

Neither did Kai.

Not yet.

The room shifted.

Years passed in an instant. Kai watched himself grow older. Ten. Fourteen. Seventeen. The same room. The same table. The same woman. Only the conversations changed.

At seventeen, she placed a notebook in front of him.

”Write.”

Teenage Kai looked down.

”Why?”

”Because you keep dreaming about him.”

”Who?”

”Adrian.”

Kai froze.

The younger version of himself looked equally stunned.

”You remember him?”

The woman smiled.

”I remember everything you tell me.”

Teenage Kai opened the notebook. The first page was blank.

Then he began writing.

Adrian opened his eyes because someone finally noticed he was there.

Kai’s stomach twisted.

That sentence.

The beginning.

The first sentence that had started everything.

The younger version of himself kept writing. Page after page. Chapter after Chapter. Year after year. Adrian grew. He made friends. He lost them. He laughed. He suffered. He fell in love. He made mistakes. He changed. He became human.

The pages turned endlessly.

Kai stared.

”This is the story.”

”Yes.”

His mother stood behind him.

”But I thought I abandoned him.”

”You did.”

Kai turned sharply.

”Then why does he still exist?”

”Because you were told to stop.”

His eyes widened.

”By who?”

The woman’s expression became sad.

”You.”

Kai stared at her.

”What?”

”You came to me crying. You said you couldn’t keep watching him die.”

The room seemed to shrink around him.

”I don’t remember.”

”I know.”

She touched his cheek gently.

”That’s why I remembered for you.”

The room began dissolving. Walls faded. Sunlight fractured. The television disappeared into static.

Kai reached toward her.

”Wait.”

She smiled sadly.

”I can’t stay.”

”Why?”

”Because I’m not really your mother.”

His heart stopped.

”What?”

The woman stepped backward. Her appearance began changing. Her hair, eyes, and voice shifted until someone else stood before him.

Finn.

Kai stared in disbelief.

”No.”

Finn smiled gently.

”You always called me Mom when you were little.”

”What are you talking about?”

”You needed someone to tell you stories.”

His expression softened.

”So I became the person you trusted most.”

The world cracked around them. The floor split apart. Darkness spread through every fracture.

Kai looked down.

”You’re not Finn.”

”No.”

Finn nodded.

”I’m what’s left of him. The memory. The echo. The part that stayed behind.”

Kai swallowed.

”Then where’s the real Finn?”

Finn pointed into the darkness.

”Waiting.”

A black door appeared where nothing had existed before.

”What is behind there?”

”The truth.”

Kai opened it.

Darkness swallowed him whole.

Then came books.

Thousands.

Millions.

Shelves stretched endlessly into the distance. A library beyond imagination. Books filled every wall, every corridor, every horizon. Some were massive. Others were small enough to fit in a pocket. Some had titles. Others remained blank.

Kai walked slowly between them.

Names surrounded him.

Luna.

Daniel.

Noah.

Finn.

Adrian.

And eventually—

Kai Mercer.

His hand rose toward the book.

”Don’t.”

Kai turned.

Finn stood at the end of the aisle. Not the memory. Not the echo.

The real Finn.

Exhausted. Bruised. Alive.

Kai crossed the distance between them and pulled him into a hug. For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Kai stepped back.

”Finn.”

A tired smile crossed Finn’s face.

”You’re finally remembering.”

”Where’s Adrian?”

Finn looked deeper into the library.

”Close.”

”Close to what?”

”To becoming himself.”

Kai frowned.

”What does that mean?”

Finn pointed toward a floating book nearby.

Its cover was completely blank.

No title.

No author.

Nothing.

”That’s Adrian’s story.”

Kai approached it carefully.

”Why is it blank?”

”Because he hasn’t chosen who he is.”

Kai touched the cover. The book trembled beneath his fingertips.

”What happens when he does?”

Finn’s expression darkened.

”The Author loses control.”

Kai frowned.

”That sounds good.”

”No.”

Finn shook his head.

”It’s dangerous.”

”Why?”

Finn looked directly into his eyes.

”Because when a character writes their own story, someone else has to stop writing it.”

Kai felt cold.

”Who?”

Finn never answered.

The library trembled violently.

A book crashed onto the floor.

Then another.

Then hundreds more.

The sound echoed endlessly through the shelves.

Finn looked upward.

”We’re too late.”

Kai followed his gaze.

A black crack spread across the ceiling.

Something was breaking in.

Something enormous.

”The Author?”

Finn shook his head.

”Worse.”

The crack widened, and darkness poured through.

Kai looked from the ceiling to Adrian’s blank book.

”What do we do?”

Finn smiled. It was the same crooked smile Kai remembered, the same smile that always appeared right before everything went wrong.

”We do what we should’ve done from the beginning.”

”What’s that?”

Finn picked up Adrian’s blank book.

”We stop trying to finish the story.”

Kai frowned.

”Then what?”

Finn opened it.

”We let it write itself.”

The pages turned one after another before finally stopping.

A single sentence appeared.

Not written by Kai.

Not written by Finn.

Not written by Adrian.

THE READER HAS ENTERED THE STORY.

Silence.

Every book in the library became still. Every page stopped turning. Even the crack above them seemed to freeze.

Finn’s smile vanished.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

”Run.”

Kai slowly turned around.

Someone stood between the shelves.

Tall.

Motionless.

Faceless.

A pen rested in its hand.

Kai’s breath caught.

This wasn’t the Author.

He knew that immediately.

The thing standing there felt older. Stranger.

It wasn’t looking at Kai.

It wasn’t looking at Finn.

It was staring beyond them.

Past the pages.

Past the library.

Past the story itself.

It was looking directly at the reader.

Then—

It smiled.
