When She Stops Being Dramatic

Chapter 391: Chapter 142: The Green Tea Female Supporting Character in a Period Novel (29)

He lowered his head, using his height to his advantage as he turned to the side and quickly stuffed something into Chi Yun’er’s hand. ”Look at it when you get home,” he whispered.

”Comrade Chi Yun’er, what is your answer?” He stepped back, his gaze fixed intently on her. ”I’ve never planned on spending my life with any woman. My unique physical condition is part of the reason, but the other part is that I had never met the one I was destined for.”

”I don’t want to make a bunch of empty promises, but it absolutely has to be you!”

Some people are just that magical. Before she entered your world, everyone else was just a passerby, coming and going. But when she arrived, the world instantly transformed from a silvery winter-scape to the warmth of a blooming spring.

If this maiden of spring were to leave, his world would simply return to the way it was before.

’But after seeing such a brilliant world, could he ever return to his old, dull life?’

Chi Yun’er pursed her lips, a soft smile playing on them. ”Are you sure? Once we’re engaged, we’ll be together for a lifetime. You’ll have to accept all my good points and my bad. No complaints and no lies!”

Jiang Yihua smiled and nodded. ”The same goes for me. People think I’m capable of anything, but I’m only human. I wonder, will Comrade Chi Yun’er feel let down later and come to regret her decision?”

At this, they both couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

Chi Yun’er stood ramrod straight and held out her hand. ”Comrade Jiang Yihua, the future is long and full of uncertainties. I don’t think we need to waste our time testing each other.”

Jiang Yihua reached out, his fingers brushing against hers before he restrained himself from taking her hand. He quickly pulled back, stuffing his hand into his pocket.

It was as if a kitten were playfully scratching inside his heart.

’He desperately missed their days on the farm, when everyone else was at work and he could enjoy his girlfriend playfully throwing herself into his arms...’

”I will give it my all,” he said solemnly.

The Jiang Family, terrified their new daughter-in-law might get away and knowing their son was short on time, discussed the engagement with the Chi Family that very evening. They decided to hold it the next day, which would still leave the young couple one day to go out and have fun together.

While the adults were engrossed in a heated discussion downstairs, Chi Yun’er was upstairs, book in hand, trying her best to eavesdrop. She was incredibly busy, one moment pressing her ear to the door, the next lying on the floor, and then trying to use a cup as a listening device.

Aside from the two ladies cackling like ducks, she couldn’t hear a thing.

Chi Yun’er wanted to use ”getting a glass of water” as an excuse to sneak downstairs and check on the situation, but her cheeks were burning hot. She was tiptoeing around, terrified of making a sound and alerting the people below.

The shadowy figure outside had been watching her for who knows how long. ’My little wife is certainly lively,’ he thought with a private smile. When he saw her turn toward the bed, he quickly ducked out of sight. A moment later, he reached out and knocked gently on the window twice.

Chi Yun’er froze for a second, then a smile touched her lips. She knelt on the bed and looked toward the window, where she indeed saw a man clinging to the drainpipe outside like a monkey.

She hurried to open the window and beckoned him inside in a hushed voice.

The man remained in the shadows, sighing softly. ”Turn off the light first,” he said. ”Otherwise, I’m afraid there will be nasty rumors about you flying around by tomorrow.”

Chi Yun’er nodded again and again, rushing over to switch off the light.

The room was instantly plunged into darkness. She blinked, trying to let her eyes adjust before searching for him.

Just then, she heard the bed creak softly. He must have jumped inside. He then reached back to close the window, keeping the mosquitos out.

Then, he swept her into a passionate, tight embrace, pinning her against the door...

The ache of longing in their hearts finally seemed to ease. It was a long while before they reluctantly pulled apart, their breaths mingling in the bright moonlight that streamed through the window.

”Yun’er,” he murmured, kissing her forehead tenderly. ”I almost regret letting you come back.” The thought that they would be separated again in two days made him pull her close and start teasingly kissing her once more.

Chi Yun’er could barely breathe. She clutched his shirt, unwilling to push him away. ”Brother Hua, did your trip to Mongolia go smoothly?”

Jiang Yihua suddenly went rigid. A cold sweat broke out on his back, a mixture of relief and lingering fear.

He spoke with difficulty. ”The country’s grain production is limited, so the higher-ups implemented a regional mutual aid program. The province we were sent to was paired with a grain-scarce region in Mongolia.”

”Everyone worked hard for a few days to get the grain loaded onto trucks for Mongolia. A five-truck convoy left on the same day as us, taking the route that bypasses the Capital City.”

”Normally, their route is about half a day shorter than ours, so they should have arrived much earlier.”

”But by the time we arrived in Mongolia and finished our delivery, not only had their convoy not shown up, but there had been no word from them for several days. The person in charge called to check, and it was confirmed they had departed as scheduled.”

”I overheard some people muttering that the terrain on that route is treacherous. With the recent heavy rains, there was a high chance of landslides. It’s a rocky mountain, so falling rocks could cause devastating harm to anyone or any vehicle passing through.”

”I’m afraid it’s very likely they didn’t make it.”

Natural disasters are an unstoppable force. Even if it wasn’t raining at the exact moment of passage, who could have predicted that the rocks, soaked by days of continuous rain, would choose that moment to come crashing down?

’But he remembered clearly: if not for his girlfriend, who had suddenly appeared in his life, his convoy would have certainly taken that same route.’

’Jiang Yihua wasn’t naive enough to believe that just because someone else met with disaster on that road, his own convoy would have magically made it through unscathed.’

’In the eyes of others, he was highly capable. He even spent his winter and summer breaks training at a military camp and was a skilled fighter. But in the face of nature’s might, what could a mere mortal do to resist?’

Chi Yun’er hugged him tightly.

’In her past life, this was how he died! He never even had the chance to step into her world!’

”Brother Hua, I don’t need you to be extraordinary,” she said. ”I just want you to be safe, sound, and healthy. We can just live a quiet life together until we grow old.”

Jiang Yihua smiled, gently stroking her back. ”I would never leave you to face this world alone.”

Chi Yun’er pushed him away slightly and looked up at him, her expression serious. ”Brother Hua, I know this is a new era, and we’re not supposed to talk about ghosts or spirits.”

”But I’ve always firmly believed that people have souls, that we have past and future lives.”

”Brother Hua, I’ll admit I’m a sucker for pretty faces. I can’t help but be drawn to beautiful people and things. But I’m also very practical, and I don’t believe in love at first sight. Yet, when I met you, I felt like we’d known each other for a very, very long time. Don’t you think maybe we were lovers in a past life?”

”If... if there really is a next life, I hope we can find each other and fall in love all over again...”

Jiang Yihua let out a low chuckle and pinched her soft cheek. ”It seems my Yun’er really, really likes me. We aren’t even married yet, and you’re already putting our next reincarnation on the agenda?”

Chi Yun’er puffed up her cheeks in mock anger, poking his chest. ”Aha, Brother Hua! Are you trying to dodge my question?”

”I knew it! You men are all scoundrels! You promise me one lifetime and you’re already tired of the idea? Planning to find someone else to grow old with in the next life?”

Jiang Yihua was completely amused by his little fiancée’s wild imagination. He pulled her into a fond embrace and nipped playfully at her cheek. ”How could I ever?”

”I can’t control what happens in the next life. But as long as I remember you, I will never stand by and let someone else steal you away.”

”You can only be Jiang Yihua’s wife!”

With that, he captured her maddeningly alluring lips with his own.

Downstairs, the discussion finally concluded. The two families lingered at the doorway, chatting warmly for another ten minutes or so.

Jiang Yihua pulled her fiercely into his arms one last time. ”I’ll come get you tomorrow morning!” With those words, he deftly opened the window, gave her a wave, and leaped nimbly into the night...

Startled, Chi Yun’er scrambled onto the bed and leaned out the window to look down.

She watched as he scurried home, hunched over. He didn’t use his front door, either—he climbed in through a second-story window.

Lights flicked on in both rooms at nearly the same time. Only then did Chi Yun’er realize with a jolt—their windows faced each other!

But a wide central road separated their two houses.
