When She Stops Being Dramatic

Chapter 386: Chapter 141: The ’Green Tea’ Female Side Character in an Era Novel (28)

”Our task for the next few days is critical. We need to properly inventory the Huoxiang Zhengqi Water and prepare it for shipment. To be precise, forty-eight organizations have agreed to a trade, and they’ll be taking 820,000 vials.”

Chi Yun’er didn’t hold back. Seeing her partners’ jaws drop in stunned amazement, she smiled and said, ”Have you ever heard the saying, ’A goose feather sent from a thousand miles away; the gift is light but the sentiment is heavy’?”

”A single vial of Huoxiang Zhengqi Water is very cheap, so the total value for each organization is only around a thousand yuan. However, if we ship them all separately, the freight costs alone will be quite high.”

”The organizations I chose are all located along a single railway line. That way, we can even make other trades along the way during one round trip...”

”Zhao Jinming, I’ll need you to do the hard part. You’ll have to escort the goods and complete the transactions.”

Zhao Jinming pressed his lips into a thin line and gave a firm, solemn nod. ”I’ll stay in the back of the truck and won’t leave its side for a second. I absolutely will not fail this mission!”

The weather was hot, and the stuffy, airless cargo bay of the truck would be far from comfortable.

Chi Yun’er smiled faintly. ”That won’t be necessary. I had a former classmate help me reserve a whole train car. All you have to do is hold on to the key.”

”Once you’re on the train, though, keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut. Be careful not to get tricked.”

Zhao Jinming looked at her and pointed to himself. ”Do I look like some gullible fool who believes whatever he’s told? Back when we were kids, wasn’t I the strategist of the group...”

At his words, the three of them exchanged a smile. It was as if their old camaraderie had transcended time, and they had picked up right where they left off.

Zhao Jinming smiled. ”Chi Yun’er—no, Director Chi, you can rest assured. I know how important this is. I’ll be careful and won’t cause any unnecessary trouble.”

”That key isn’t leaving my side.”

Chi Yun’er nodded, her eyes crinkling at the corners. ”I believe you. You’re the old director’s grandson, after all. A serious and responsible work ethic is a given.”

”You two do a good job, and you’ll be my right and left hands. From now on, we need to properly serve the nearly three thousand employees of this hospital...”

Zhao Jinming and Xu Chengfang nodded vigorously.

It was true that they both had powerful connections. At the same time, however, they were stuck in that awkward space of not being qualified for the best jobs, but too proud for the worst. They looked down on positions that were well-paid, easy, and required no technical skills, seeing them as dead-end jobs with no future. They didn’t want to just start their careers by coasting, leaving all their youthful passion with no outlet.

On the other hand, the ambitious jobs that would have been a worthy outlet for their passion had high technical requirements. They wouldn’t have been competent enough to handle those roles even if they were given them.

Chi Yun’er was able to get into the Human Resources Department for two reasons. First, she had a strong family background—her aunt was the department director. Second, she was very skilled at organizing data and files.

Furthermore, her parents in the Chi Family had been waiting for their daughter to say the word to return to the city, and they had been holding this job for her since last year.

Just two days ago, Zhao Jinming and Xu Chengfang had thought they were destined to be nothing more than minor functionaries fetching tea and water, coasting by on a monthly salary of twenty or thirty-odd yuan.

But now, they had a task that directly concerned the vital interests of the entire hospital staff—a task that required their direct involvement. This was the kind of work they were meant to do!

They sat on either side of Chi Yun’er, watching as she scribbled on a piece of paper, breaking the project down into three parts.

Every so often, one of them would ask a question or offer a sound suggestion, and the three of them would discuss how to further optimize their plan.

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK. ”Not off work yet?” Mr. Chi, who had finished his own workday long ago, had been waiting outside for his daughter. Seeing the relaxed looks on their faces at last, he finally tapped on the window.

He realized his daughter had inherited his workaholic gene, a fact that made him feel both sentimental and proud. ’I never thought I’d see the day,’ he thought, ’where I’m the one rushing someone else to clock out.’

Only then did Chi Yun’er and her colleagues instinctively glance at their watches. They were already more than half an hour past quitting time.

”Oh my gosh, time flies,” Xu Chengfang couldn’t help but exclaim. ”When I was interning here over winter break as my uncle’s assistant, I was literally counting down the minutes, just trying to make it through the day.”

”Forget about voluntarily working overtime—even staying one minute late felt like pure agony.”

”Working for someone else versus working on something that’s your own... it’s a world of difference!”

Zhao Jinming nodded in agreement. ”This is exactly the kind of work I’ve always dreamed of!”

As a man, he wasn’t just looking for a stable job like many of the women were.

Zhao Jinming loved being on the move, not cooped up in some tiny office.

Tomorrow, he would be accompanying a shipment to the south. The one-way trip would take four days and three nights. For most people, the novelty might wear off after the first day or two, leaving a long, grueling journey ahead.

But he was different. He was determined to turn the tedious journey into an opportunity to gain experience and better himself.

”Alright, that’s all for today,” Chi Yun’er said. ”After dinner, Zhao Jinming, you’ll need to go with the workers at the warehouse to transport the goods to the train station first.”
