The Golem Mage

“So, what are we going to do about the offer you accepted, brother?

If you had just let Garrick handle it, we might have been able to salvage the situation, but now you’ve put us in a tight spot,” the Third Elder said, pulling out his gourd and preparing to take a drink.

“Put that away!

We have a younger generation here with us we can’t have you setting a bad example,” the Grand Elder admonished, glaring at the Third Elder.

“Oh, come on, old man.

You’re just mad because I called by your name instead of your title,” the Third Elder retorted.

But before the Grand Elder could respond, Alec’s voice cut through the brewing argument, redirecting their focus.

“You don’t need to worry about him being a bad influence on me, Grand Elder, I’ve been drinking wine with Gramps since even before my awakening, and even my master at the academy drinks occasionally, so I’m no stranger to it.” Alec said calmly.

Alec’s reassurance earned a raised eyebrow from the Grand Elder, but he let the third Elder’s statement slide.

“That aside, we should get back to the issue at hand, and I agree with the Grand Elder’s suggestion, we do need to treat this matter seriously before it’s too late.” Alec continued, his tone serious.

The room quieted as all eyes turned to Alec, who stood beside the Patriarch’s throne like a steadfast guard, the elders couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride and fulfilment as they watched him speak with authority and composure in the presence of mages far stronger than him.

It was a moment of reflection for them, a realization of just how much Alec had grown, not only in magical prowess but also in character.

He carried himself with the bearing of a leader, embodying the traits they believed a future Patriarch should possess.

It felt like a group of mother hens marvelling at their chick becoming everything they had hoped for and more.

“Well, Alec has summed it up perfectly,” the Grand Elder said, nodding in agreement.

“Let’s stop wasting time on trivial matters and focus on moving forward, our unreliable Patriarch has already agreed to send Tier 7 to Tier 1 mages for support , while we still have enforcers and a few mages to fill those roles, it doesn’t change the fact that we lack a suitable leader to lead the Tier 1 to 6 battlefield.”

“Well, if that’s the biggest issue right now, why not just decide who’ll represent our clan on the Tier 7 battlefield first?

And It’s also about time we reminded these fools why the Gordons shouldn’t be messed with,” the Third Elder suggested with a mischievous grin, earning a nod of agreement from the Patriarch.

“Alright, then it’s settled.

You’ll be fighting, and Graham will be your partner,” the Patriarch announced decisively.

The Third Elder’s grin widened as he turned to his left, where the Fourth Elder sat, and teased,

“What a way to make my debut, partnered with the mighty old Fourth.”

The Fourth Elder merely shook his head at his brother’s excitement, unfazed.

“Good.

One, a low-tier Tier 7 Mage specializing in merging golems, and the other, a peak Tier 7 Mage with a restraining golem specialty.

Together, they should complement each other well and handle any problems that arise as long as they stick together,” the Grand Elder remarked, rising from his throne with a serious expression.

“But now that’s decided, how do we address the issue of the other ranks leadership?

Draco is still in seclusion, trying to break through to the Tier 7 Mage realm, Zack is also in seclusion, working toward the Tier 6 Mage realm so he can take up his post as the Eighth Elder,” he continued.

“Jessica, Aileas, and Jiang are all still away at the academy, which means we lack leadership for the other battlefield ranks, without a charismatic mages to guide each realm battlefield, achieving real victories will be difficult,” the Grand Elder added, his concern evident.

“It was a poor decision to agree to these terms,” the First Elder chimed in, frowning.

“Even if we count Alec and the younger mages who’ve just returned, their strength is best suited for the Tier 5 battlefield, we can’t expect them to compensate for the lack of capable leadership in the other tiers.

“We’re up against zombies here, more intelligent and organized than ever, sending our mages out without strong leaders will only result in unnecessary deaths,” the First Elder concluded grimly.

The room fell into a heavy silence as the elders mulled over the dilemma, each struggling to find a viable solution.

Seeing the powerful and experienced elders all stumped by the issue planted a bold, perhaps reckless, idea in Alec’s mind.

“I have a proposition.

Would you like to hear it?” Alec’s calm voice cut through the room’s tense silence, drawing the attention of every elder present, their eyes glinted with curiosity and hope as they turned to him, eager for a fresh perspective.

“Go ahead, Alec.

We’re listening,” the Grand Elder responded, his tone reflecting his growing admiration.

Truthfully, the Grand Elder had initially invited Alec to the meeting to expose him to patriarchal duties and provide insight into how the clan’s affairs were managed.

All because he wanted Alec to gain experience so he wouldn’t be clueless when he eventually assumed the patriarchal role.

But now, the Grand Elder was silently congratulating himself for the decision, as Alec had proven to be thoughtful, speaking only when necessary, and his contributions thus far had either eased tensions or provided clarity.

These were essential qualities for a future patriarch, and Alec was demonstrating them naturally.

“Since most of our Tier commanders from Tier 1 to Tier 6 are unavailable, why not assign a single commander to oversee all six tiers?

To simplify things further, you don’t need to search far for someone to take on this responsibility, I volunteer to lead all of the Gordon clan’s mages on the battlefield that day, excluding the Tier 7 mages,” Alec proposed confidently.

The room fell silent for an unnervingly long moment after Alec finished speaking.

Every elder, including the patriarch, sat frozen, staring at him with a mix of disbelief and astonishment, his audacious idea seemed too radical to process at first, leaving them utterly perplexed.
