Let’s Squander A Billion First!

Chapter 698: Chapter 698: Encountering Splendid Auspiciousness (32)

”What do you mean ’ran away’? That’s a disappearance.”

The man blurted out.

A disappearance?

The man might’ve still been a bit drunk. Plus, with the money Chuzheng had given him, he just spilled everything.

The relationship between the boss and his wife wasn’t very good. They often had huge rows at the factory, which all the workers knew about.

Back then, Changfeng Factory was doing alright. Due to the market conditions at the time, the boss was considering reform and had withdrawn a lot of capital.

But not long after, rumors started flying about the boss’s wife running off with a pretty boy and a load of cash.

In fact, that wasn’t true; at that time, the boss’s wife had already disappeared.

As for the pretty boy, he was entirely made up.

”Why didn’t your boss call the police?”

”Call the police?” The man laughed scornfully, ”Along with the boss’s wife, a large sum of money disappeared. Just as the factory was having issues that needed working capital. The boss was too busy trying to save his own factory to have time for the police.”

In the end, the factory still shut down.

”And your boss?”

”Don’t know,” the man sighed. ”After the factory closed, the boss didn’t have the money to pay the workers, so he let us divide up the factory land. Some workers didn’t want to stay, so they sold their shares to others. That’s how it got to be the way it is today.”

Yan Yu stood in the corner of the room, pointing to a photo hanging on the wall, ”Is that photo of people from your factory?”

The man looked, ”Yeah, that was taken during the Spring Festival the year before it closed.”

The photo was dusty and somewhat blurry. Yan Yu asked if he could take it down.

The man immediately agreed, unsteadily took the photo down, wiped the dust off, and handed it to Yan Yu.

”Tell me, you two, why are you asking about things from ten years ago? Is something up?” The man inquired nosily.

Yan Yu held the photo, his frown deepening.

”What’s wrong?”

He looked up at Chuzheng, pointing to someone in the last row of the photo, ”Is this person part of your factory?”

The man squinted and after a long look, he said, ”That’s... that’s what’s-his-name...”

A moment later, he remembered, ”Zhou Wen, right, Zhou Wen.”

”He was part of your factory?”

”Yeah,” the man nodded. ”But he hadn’t been there long, just joined around the time this photo was taken... Ah, I can’t quite remember.”

Yan Yu asked a few more questions.

After all, it had been over ten years; the man couldn’t recall many details.

-

Yan Yu took the photo and left the room with an uneasy expression.

Chuzheng asked him, ”What’s wrong?”

Yan Yu pressed his lips together, ”Originally, based on the evidence, the police had a psychological profile of the suspect.”

”And?” So what?

Yan Yu pointed to the person in the photo, ”That person is Zhou Wen.”

At the time they thought they had caught the culprit and were excited for a while. But when they brought him in, they found out he was disabled.

Zhou Wen didn’t have an alibi for the time of the crime, which inevitably threw cold water on everyone’s enthusiasm.

As if recalling something, Yan Yu turned back inside.

”Do you know how Zhou Wen became disabled?”

”I remember that,” the man said. ”Back then, Zhou Wen was a young guy, quick to learn. The factory got some new equipment that needed knowledgeable operators, so Zhou Wen went to learn. Unexpectedly, there was an accident, and he ended up with both legs disabled.”

”How did the accident happen?”

The man shook his head, ”Don’t know, probably his own carelessness. When we found him, he was alone there. By the time he got to the hospital, we thought he wouldn’t make it, but he survived, lucky guy.”

The man explained that no one had seen how Zhou Wen’s accident happened.

At the time, it was a big deal.

The boss even ended up paying a lot of compensation.

Yan Yu took out his phone and called Shen Siming, ”Check into Zhou Wen, and everyone around him.”

Shen Siming on the other end sounded frantic, his voice a bit shaky, ”Why are you looking into Zhou Wen? Wasn’t he cleared of suspicion?”

Yan Yu briefly explained.

”Okay, got it.”

Yan Yu hung up the phone and looked at Chuzheng, ”We should go find Zhou Wen first.”

Chuzheng saw a hint of bloodthirsty excitement in his eyes.

It was like a hungry person seeing bread, or someone in the desert spotting an oasis—the brightness in his pupils frightening.

Something seemed off with the little guy.

”Okay.”

Chuzheng and Yan Yu got back in the car. They drove out of the rather narrow alley, and in a flash, a black sedan surged from the side.

”Watch out!”

Yan Yu cried out in alarm.

But it was already too late; the other car was prepared, moving too fast, and it crashed directly into theirs.

Chuzheng pulled Yan Yu into his arms to protect him.

A loud bang filled their ears, the car shook, and glass shattered noisily.

The car that hit them reversed, seemingly readying for a second hit.

”Are you okay?” Chuzheng asked while pushing the door on his side open.

”I’m...”

”Get out, quick.” Chuzheng unbuckled the seat belt.

Yan Yu was extremely quick to get out, and Chuzheng, supporting himself on the seat, slid out nimbly. He quickly exited the vehicle, gripping Yan Yu as they dodged to the side.

Bang!

Their car was directly hit and deformed.

The attackers’ car didn’t care whether it had hit any people; it quickly fled after hitting their car.

-

”Who did this?”

Shen Siming rushed out of the police car, heading straight for Yan Yu.

”Didn’t get a clear look.” There was a hint of coldness between Yan Yu’s brows. The car had privacy film, and he hadn’t seen the people inside at all.

Shen Siming: ”The killer?”

Yan Yu: ”When Teacher Chu was investigating this, the killer silenced him. It seems our direction is correct.” If not the killer, then it must be related to the killer.

Clearly, the killer didn’t care about hitting someone; it was simply a warning.

If he continued his investigation, he might indeed lose his life.

”Did you get the license plate?”

”Already looked into it, it’s a fake plate.”

”Damn!” Shen Siming cursed, ”Are you okay?”

”I’m fine,” Yan Yu said. ”Have you sent people to Zhou Wen’s place yet?”

If the killer wasn’t Zhou Wen, there was a high chance Zhou Wen was related to the killer, and the killer might target Zhou Wen.

”Don’t worry.” Shen Siming was fierce, ”If I catch this bastard, I’ll kill him.”

Shen Siming yelled to the people nearby, ”Check the surveillance first, find that car!”

”There are many blind spots in the surveillance around here; you won’t find it,” Chuzheng said indifferently, leaning against the car door, Leisurely speaking.

Shen Siming took a look at the surroundings, his expression turning more ferocious.

The roads around here were intricate and the surveillance sparse; the suspect could easily disappear into the endless stream of cars by taking any road without surveillance.

”President Jin, we’ve got it figured out.” Assistant Xu approached with a map, ”Their car ran off this road.”

Since Wan Xiaoxiao wasn’t showing up for work lately, Chuzheng had to borrow Assistant Xu from the former president.

Assistant Xu was much more stable in his work than Wan Xiaoxiao.

Chuzheng handed the map to Shen Siming, ”Check the surveillance on this road.”

Shen Siming: ”How did you know?”

”Money.”

You can’t see through surveillance, but with so many residents nearby, someone must have seen something.

Most people, approached by police, would say they know nothing, preferring to avoid trouble.

But money changes things.

Shen Siming: ”...”
