Let’s Squander A Billion First!

Chapter 695: Chapter 695: Encountering Splendid Auspiciousness (29)

Autopsy room.

Yan Yu sat alone on the floor, a corpse above him, yet he seemed unaware, sitting in silence.

Buzz buzz buzz...

The phone in his pocket kept vibrating.

The sound would rise and then stop.

Pause and start again.

Finally, the man on the ground moved, slowly taking out his phone.

The name on the screen brought some focus to his eyes at last.

”Baby...” Yan Yu called out hoarsely, ”Sorry, I’m working.”

”I’m outside.” the person on the line said.

Yan Yu looked toward the door as if he could see through the closed barrier to the person outside.

Yan Yu’s breath grew slightly constricted as he got up and walked towards the door.

The door operated automatically, but he hesitated for a long time before pressing the button to open it.

Yan Yu glanced to the side, moderating the gloomy and slightly frightening expression in the glass, then pressed the door open button.

Chuzheng stood several meters from the door, leaning casually with a plant beside her, its vigorous greenery highlighting the girl’s own vibrant presence.

Yan Yu walked over in silence, took her hand, and led her back to his office.

He poured a glass of water for Chuzheng, who did not take it, so he said, ”...There’s no drug in it, rest assured.”

Saying so, he took a sip before offering it to Chuzheng again.

Chuzheng did not take it: ”I didn’t suspect you, I just don’t want to drink.”

Hearing this, Yan Yu put the glass down on the desk: ”Why have you come? Are you afraid I might run away?”

”Wan Xiaoxiao, my cousin, is dead,” Chuzheng said. ”I brought her in.”

Yan Yu fell silent again.

His gaze landed on the office window, with nothing but a void of dead stillness in his deep eyes.

Chuzheng noticed something unusual about Yan Yu and turned him towards her: ”What’s wrong with you?”

Suddenly, Yan Yu embraced Chuzheng.

His breathing was heavy and disordered.

”I’m going to kill him.”

”Kill who?”

”Kill him,” Yan Yu’s voice grew muffled. ”He deserves to die.”

Chuzheng: ”...”

Who deserves to die?

Kill who?

Can you just be clear for once!

However, Yan Yu only said these few words, then fell silent, clutching her tightly as if she were the only reed he could grasp on the vast sea.

”Yan Yu, the deceased...”

Shen Siming’s voice abruptly stopped.

But he didn’t leave; seeing Yan Yu and Chuzheng separate, he then came in.

”Can you step aside for a moment, I need to talk to Yan Yu about something?”

In front of Shen Siming, Yan Yu kissed Chuzheng’s cheek, ”Can you wait outside for me for a moment?”

Shen Siming looked at Chuzheng with a startled expression.

Yan Yu was actually using a tone of inquiry.

”Mhm.”

Once Chuzheng had stepped out and closed the door, Shen Siming spoke: ”The identity of the deceased has been confirmed, they had a mental disorder, left the hospital a few days ago, and their family couldn’t find them for days until now.”

Yan Yu, with a throbbing headache, sat down in the chair: ”What do they have in common with the victim from ten years ago?”

”Nothing,” Shen Siming replied. ”The victims from ten years ago had no connections at all—background, education, gender, age—seeming random, just as you... and we still tend towards the theory of a random act.”

The chosen victims had no apparent connection.

Such cases were the most difficult to solve.

Because no one knew when the murderer would randomly choose a victim to commit the crime, nor could they uncover more clues.

”We’re currently questioning the victim’s family to see if we can identify any discrepancies.”

Shen Siming glanced at Yan Yu.

”If you feel like you can’t keep up, take a break. I’ll handle this case.”

Yan Yu suddenly looked up, his deep eyes like a cold pond, the chill penetrating to the bone.

”I want to catch the murderer with my own hands,” and then tear him limb from limb.

The violence within Yan Yu’s heart was churning.

No one could suppress it...

Only when holding her could he feel somewhat at peace.

”Don’t overexert yourself,” Shen Siming said. ”What was the cause of death for the deceased?”

”Asphyxiation,” Yan Yu replied. ”Just like ten years ago. Once the other test reports come out, I’ll have someone send them to you.”

”Hmm, I’ll check the victim’s movement history. Surveillance networks are much better now than they were ten years ago, I believe we’ll definitely catch the killer.”

Shen Siming patted Yan Yu on the shoulder and left.

Chuzheng stood outside the door, wanting to go in, but Shen Siming held her back.

”What is it?”

”Yan Yu...” Shen Siming looked worried. ”Let’s put it this way, Yan Yu might do something irrational. I hope you can keep an eye on him.”

”What happened?”

”I shouldn’t tell you,” as it involved the case, and he dared not discuss such matters with someone outside the system. ”Thank you for your trouble.”

-

Chuzheng pushed open the door and entered. Yan Yu sat silently in the chair, his thoughts drifting off to who knows where.

Chuzheng walked up to him, but he hardly reacted.

The whole room was so quiet it was suffocating, causing a sense of unease.

Chuzheng squatted down, holding Yan Yu’s hand, ”Yan Yu, talk to me if you have a problem, I’ll help you solve it.”

Yan Yu’s focus gradually shifted onto Chuzheng.

His eyes were as dark as the abyss, and when he looked at her, it felt like standing at the edge of an abyss, about to fall at any moment.

It was enough to stir up feelings of panic, tension, and unease.

”You can’t solve it.”

His voice was slow and gentle.

Like a breeze in the night, soft yet piercingly cold.

Chuzheng clenched his hand tightly, ”There’s nothing I can’t solve.” Even if it seemed insolvable, she would find a way; as far as Chuzheng was concerned, there was always a solution, even for dead ends.

The girl’s voice was clear, yet calm and firm.

Every word landed on the tip of his heart, as if carrying some kind of magic that could soothe the violence bubbling within him.

In this chaotic night, it was like she was pulling him out of the cold darkness, bringing a trace of warmth.

Yan Yu lowered his gaze, his eyes seemingly on her, yet not quite.

He tightened his grasp, pulling Chuzheng up and holding her tightly in his arms, his chin resting on her neck and his lips against the artery on her neck.

Yan Yu felt an urge at that moment.

To tell her everything that was weighing on his heart.

But he didn’t; he suppressed the impulse.

”Let me hold you for a while.”

Chuzheng gently patted his back.

Their embracing figures were reflected in the window.

Yan Yu received a call from his assistant midway, saying some test results were out.

He released Chuzheng, his forehead against hers, ”I’ll be back later.”

”Give me a kiss first.”

Yan Yu wasn’t really in the mood, but he kissed her anyway in response to Chuzheng’s request.

After Yan Yu left, Chuzheng went out to find Wan Xiaoxiao.

From the mouth of Wan Xiaoxiao, a family member of the victim, she learned a bit of news, and from the snippets of conversation around her, she pieced together the keywords ”straw man serial killer case from ten years ago.”

Chuzheng immediately went online to search for the case from ten years ago.

Back then, the internet wasn’t as convenient as it is now, but she still managed to dig up quite a bit of information.
