Yandere Stream

The horn echoed a second time.

Long, low, and mournful.

The sound rolled across the city like distant thunder, lingering in the evening air long after it should have faded. Kai stood near the stairwell window and stared out across the skyline. Nothing looked different at first glance. Office towers still glowed beneath the deepening twilight, their windows reflecting the last traces of sunlight. Traffic crawled through the streets below in endless streams of red and white lights. Somewhere in the distance, a police siren wailed briefly before disappearing into the familiar rhythm of the city.

Everything looked normal.

Yet Kai knew better.

His eyes narrowed as he focused on the horizon. At first, he mistook it for a low storm cloud drifting over the rooftops. Then he realized it wasn’t moving with the wind.

It was moving with purpose.

A ribbon of black smoke stretched across the sky, unnaturally straight and impossibly dark. It drifted above the city like a scar carved into reality itself. The sight immediately reminded him of old photographs he’d seen of steam locomotives crossing forgotten landscapes.

Only there was one problem.

There weren’t any train tracks anywhere near the city center.

Beside him, the little girl took an involuntary step backward.

”It isn’t supposed to come until midnight,” she whispered.

Kai glanced at her. ”You’ve said that twice.”

”I know.”

”What changes if it arrives early?”

For several seconds, she didn’t answer. Her eyes remained fixed on the spreading trail of smoke. When she finally spoke, her voice was so quiet that it almost vanished beneath the evening breeze drifting through the cracked window.

”It means...” She hesitated. ”...someone else is driving.”

Kai felt his stomach tighten.

Someone else.

Those two words carried far more weight than they should have.

Over the past few days, every answer they discovered seemed to reveal an even larger mystery waiting behind it. First there had been forgotten narrators. Then abandoned revisions. Then Adrian, a person who somehow existed before his own story had begun. Now there was a train that wasn’t following its own schedule.

Kai was beginning to understand something important.

Ending one story hadn’t restored reality.

It had only shown him how much larger reality truly was.

Behind him, Apartment 7B had become unexpectedly busy.

Daniel emerged from the living room carrying two flashlights despite Luna insisting several times that they would probably be useless.

”I don’t care if it’s a magic train,” Daniel said, tossing one toward Kai. ”If the lights go out, you’ll thank me.”

Kai caught it automatically and stared at the flashlight in amusement.

”You’re impossible.”

”I’ve been told that.”

Luna stepped into the hallway with a backpack slung over one shoulder. ”I packed water.”

Daniel looked at her. ”For a ghost train?”

”For you.”

The response came instantly.

Daniel blinked.

”You’d somehow manage to get dehydrated.”

He opened his mouth, closed it again, and eventually nodded.

”Fair.”

Even Noah couldn’t suppress a small smile.

The exchange eased the tension lingering in the air. For a brief moment, everything felt normal again. They weren’t heroes preparing to investigate some impossible phenomenon. They were simply friends standing in an apartment hallway, getting ready for a trip they didn’t fully understand.

Kai found himself looking at them one by one.

Daniel.

Luna.

Noah.

Not long ago, he would have tried to shoulder everything alone. He would have convinced himself that protecting people meant leaving them behind.

Now he knew better.

Sometimes strength wasn’t carrying the burden by yourself.

Sometimes strength was trusting other people enough to help carry it.

”Before we go,” Kai said.

The conversation immediately stopped.

Everyone looked at him.

”I need everyone to promise me something.”

Daniel groaned dramatically.

”Please tell me this isn’t the part where we split up.”

”No.”

”Good.”

Kai’s expression turned serious.

”If anything starts trying to separate us...”

His gaze moved between each of them.

”We don’t let it.”

Noah nodded first.

”Agreed.”

Luna answered immediately afterward.

”Definitely.”

Daniel raised his coffee mug like he was making an official declaration.

”I vote we never split up in haunted locations ever again.”

A laugh escaped Kai before he could stop it.

”Seconded.”

The little girl watched the exchange silently.

There was something strange in her expression.

Something wistful.

Like someone looking at a photograph from a happier time.

Kai noticed.

”What?”

She blinked.

”Nothing.”

”Liar.”

A tiny laugh escaped her.

”I forgot...”

”What?”

”...how noisy friends are.”

The words lingered in the hallway.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Kai wanted to ask what she meant. Wanted to ask where she came from and why she always seemed to know more than she should.

But looking at her now, he wasn’t sure she knew all the answers herself.

Instead, he simply extended his hand.

The little girl stared at it in surprise.

”What are you doing?”

”You don’t have to stand over there.”

Her eyes widened.

”I’m not coming.”

”Why not?”

A sad smile touched her lips.

”Because some stories...”

She gently pushed his hand back toward him.

”...have doors that only open one way.”

Before Kai could respond, a third horn echoed across the city.

This one was closer.

Much closer.

The apartment windows rattled violently.

The floor beneath their feet trembled.

Down on the street, pedestrians continued walking as though nothing had happened.

Nobody else seemed to hear it.

Or perhaps they simply couldn’t.

Kai checked the time.

8:03 PM.

Too early.

Far too early.

Something was definitely wrong.

Suddenly Noah stiffened.

His gaze snapped toward the eastern side of the city.

”I know where it is.”

Everyone turned toward him.

”What?” Luna asked.

Noah frowned.

”I don’t know how I know.”

His expression grew distant.

”But I do.”

He pointed beyond the rooftops.

”Old Ashbridge Station.”

Daniel’s eyes widened.

”That’s impossible.”

”You know it?”

”My grandfather used to talk about it all the time,” Daniel replied. ”It was shut down decades ago. Long before I was born.”

Kai’s attention sharpened immediately.

”Can we get there?”

Daniel pulled out his phone and checked the route.

”Twenty minutes. Maybe less.”

Kai didn’t hesitate.

”We’re leaving now.”

The group immediately sprang into motion.

Within moments they were heading down the apartment stairs. The sounds of hurried footsteps echoed through the stairwell.

Halfway down, Kai stopped.

Something made him look back.

The little girl still stood on the seventh-floor landing.

She hadn’t moved.

The hallway light cast a soft golden glow around her yellow dress. Against the darkness gathering beyond the windows, she looked impossibly small.

And impossibly alone.

She tilted her head.

”What?”

Kai smiled.

”When this is over...”

She waited.

”...I’m coming back.”

A flicker of surprise crossed her face.

”So we can finally learn your name.”

For a moment, her usual composure vanished completely.

Hope appeared in her eyes.

Small.

Fragile.

Beautiful.

”...I’d like that,” she whispered.

Kai nodded.

Then he turned and continued down the stairs.

The little girl remained where she was long after they disappeared from sight.

Only when the sound of their footsteps faded completely did she speak again.

”I hope...”

Her voice trembled.

”...I still remember it.”

Outside, the air had changed.

The warmth of summer was gone.

A cold wind swept through the streets, carrying with it the unmistakable scent of coal smoke and wet steel. Above the city, the black ribbon of smoke stretched across the stars like a wound that refused to heal.

And somewhere beyond the buildings, hidden from ordinary eyes, a steam whistle sounded one final time.

Not calling passengers.

Not announcing departure.

Announcing arrival.

Somewhere in the darkness, an abandoned station that had not existed for decades was opening its doors once more.
