Yandere Stream

For several seconds, Eden could only stare at the computer screen.

The broken pieces of the white space had stopped falling. They hung around him like fragments of shattered glass, each one reflecting a different memory. In one fragment he saw himself as a child. In another, he sat beside Luna beneath a warm summer sky. A third showed Aria at six years old, asleep against his shoulder. Farther away, another fragment displayed the hospital room where he had first awakened after twenty years. Every shard held a different version of his life, a different piece of the impossible journey that had brought him here.

Yet none of those images mattered anymore.

At the center of everything stood a desk, a computer, and the man sitting behind it.

Eden.

Not a copy. Not another variation created by some higher layer of reality. Not a possibility among infinite possibilities.

The original.

The man who had once been twenty-seven years old, shattered by grief and unable to accept that the people he loved were gone. The man who had written the second story.

Eden stepped toward him.

”You’re me.”

The man sitting at the computer did not immediately respond. His fingers hovered above the keyboard as if he had been interrupted in the middle of a sentence. Finally, without looking away from the monitor, he answered.

”Yes.”

”You said you didn’t write the first story.”

”I didn’t.”

”Then who did?”

At last, the original Eden raised his head.

There was something deeply unsettling about seeing his own face worn down by decades of exhaustion. His features were familiar, but his eyes were ancient. They carried the hollow look of someone who had spent years searching for answers and eventually stopped believing they existed.

”I don’t know.”

Eden frowned.

”You don’t know?”

”No.”

”You expect me to believe that?”

The original Eden leaned back in his chair.

”I spent twenty years trying to find out.”

”Twenty years?”

”Twenty years awake,” he replied quietly. His gaze drifted toward the floating fragments surrounding them. ”And twenty years inside.”

Eden’s expression tightened.

”You created all those worlds.”

”Some of them.”

”All those versions of me?”

”Most.”

”Luna?”

The original Eden hesitated.

”Not originally.”

The answer struck harder than Eden expected.

”Aria?”

”Not originally.”

A cold feeling settled in his chest.

”Then what did you create?”

Without answering directly, the original Eden turned the monitor toward him.

A blank document filled the screen.

At the top was a title.

THE SECOND STORY

Beneath it sat a single line.

There was a man who lost everything.

Eden stared.

”That’s where it began?”

”That’s where I began.”

”You wrote yourself?”

”Eventually.”

The original Eden rose from his chair and walked around the desk. Opening a drawer, he removed a small black notebook whose cover looked worn by age and countless hands.

He placed it gently on the desk.

”The first thing I wrote wasn’t about me.”

Eden approached cautiously.

”What’s that?”

”The first page.”

He opened the notebook.

Inside was no title. No explanation. No introduction.

Only a single sentence written in handwriting that was not his.

A character opened his eyes before the author knew there was a story.

Eden felt his stomach tighten.

”That isn’t your handwriting.”

”No.”

”Then whose is it?”

”I don’t know.”

”You said this was the first page.”

”It is.”

”Then how did you get it?”

The original Eden looked toward Aria, who had remained silent until now.

”I found it beside my bed.”

”When?”

”After Luna died.”

The words hit like a hammer.

The original Eden looked down at the notebook.

”I hadn’t slept for days. I’d stopped answering calls. I couldn’t bring myself to touch anything that belonged to them. Then I found this.”

He turned another page.

Luna is not dead.

Another.

Aria is waiting.

Another.

Eden will write again.

Eden swallowed.

”You read it.”

”Yes.”

”And that started everything.”

The original Eden nodded.

”I thought it was a message.”

”From who?”

”Someone who knew me.”

”And you never found them?”

”No.”

He closed the notebook.

”Because the next morning every page was blank.”

Eden stared.

”Blank?”

”Every page.”

”Even the first?”

”Even the first.”

A chill crawled down Eden’s spine.

”So the first story disappeared.”

”No.”

The original Eden met his gaze.

”It moved.”

”What?”

”The story moved.”

He gestured toward the countless fragments floating around them.

”It didn’t vanish. It went somewhere else.”

”Where?”

The answer came quietly.

”Into you.”

Silence settled between them.

Eden looked down at his hands.

”You said I was created by the second story.”

”I said I wrote the second story.”

”What’s the difference?”

”The second story wasn’t creating you.”

The original Eden stepped closer.

”It was remembering you.”

Eden’s pulse quickened.

”You were already there,” the man continued. ”Before I ever wrote a word.”

”That’s impossible.”

”That’s what I thought too.”

He walked toward the edge of the floating room.

Below them stretched a vast darkness. At first it looked empty, but as Eden focused he realized it was filled with countless lights.

Millions of them.

They looked like stars until he noticed each one was a window.

A different world.

A different possibility.

”The first story wasn’t written,” the original Eden said quietly.

”It was discovered.”

”By who?”

”I don’t know.”

”Then what was it?”

”A possibility.”

”Of me?”

”Of everything.”

Eden stared at the endless lights.

”So Luna existed before I wrote her?”

”Possibly.”

”Aria?”

”Possibly.”

”My father?”

”Possibly.”

The idea made his head spin.

”You’re telling me everyone I loved might have existed before any of us were written?”

The original Eden nodded.

”That’s what the first page suggested.”

Eden’s gaze shifted.

”And the Reader?”

”The Reader found it.”

”The First Reader?”

”No.”

The original Eden shook his head.

”The first Reader isn’t a person.”

Aria finally stepped forward.

”That’s what I was trying to tell you.”

Eden turned toward her.

”The first Reader is a function. Something that happens whenever possibility is observed.”

”You became the Reader.”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

”Because someone had to remember.”

Pain flickered across her face.

”When people started disappearing, I realized something. If nobody remembered a person, the story could rewrite them.”

Eden felt his chest tighten.

”So you became the Reader to protect them.”

”I thought remembering you would keep you from being erased.”

”And did it work?”

”For a while.”

She looked away.

”Then I realized the Reader wasn’t protecting the story. It was feeding it.”

The fragments around them shifted.

Thousands of versions of Eden appeared. Child. Teenager. Soldier. King. Monster. Husband. Father.

Endless possibilities.

”Memory created branches,” Aria said softly. ”Every possibility someone remembered became another story.”

A terrible realization settled over Eden.

The Readers. The Authors. The layers.

They had never created the infinite stories.

They had only continued something that already existed.

Eden looked into the darkness.

”Then who started it?”

”We don’t know,” Aria answered.

”You said you knew something.”

”I do.”

”What?”

She turned toward the computer.

”The first story wasn’t about Eden.”

The screen changed.

Words appeared on their own.

BEFORE THERE WAS A CHARACTER...

THERE WAS A READER.

The sentence continued.

BEFORE THERE WAS A READER...

THERE WAS A CHOICE.

Eden frowned.

”Choice?”

”The first story began when something chose to look.”

”Look at what?”

The screen darkened.

Then a final sentence appeared.

AT A WORLD THAT DID NOT YET EXIST.

The room fell silent.

”Who looked?”

The original Eden shook his head.

”I don’t know.”

Aria looked directly at him.

”I do.”

Fear filled her eyes.

”The first Reader.”

”You said it wasn’t a person.”

”It wasn’t.”

”Then what was it?”

”A world.”

Eden stared.

”A world?”

”The first thing that ever read anything wasn’t a person. It was another story.”

The lights around them began going dark one by one until only a single point remained.

Inside it was a small room.

A chair.

A desk.

And a little girl.

She sat there holding a book.

Not reading it.

Writing in it.

”That’s her,” Eden whispered.

Aria nodded.

”The first character.”

”But she said someone created her.”

”She lied.”

”Why?”

”Because she didn’t know.”

The image zoomed closer.

The little girl lifted her head and looked directly at them.

”I finally remembered.”

A cold shiver ran through Eden.

The girl lowered her gaze.

”I wasn’t the first character.”

The screen went black.

Her final words echoed through the room.

”I was the first Reader.”

Eden turned toward Aria.

”She can’t be both.”

”That’s why everything is breaking.”

The monitor flickered again.

THE ORIGINAL STORY HAS BEEN FOUND.

THE FIRST READER HAS AWAKENED.

Then:

THE STORY NEEDS A NEW AUTHOR.

”New Author?” Eden asked.

”No,” Aria said immediately. ”They aren’t asking for one.”

”Then what are they want?”

She reached for his hand.

”They’re asking you.”

The screen changed one last time.

EDEN, WRITE THE NEXT PAGE.

The cursor blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Waiting.

Eden stared at the blank document.

For the first time since this nightmare had begun, nobody was telling him what would happen next. Nobody was deciding his actions. Nobody was offering choices disguised as freedom.

There was only a blank page.

And somewhere beyond every layer of reality, something was waiting to see what he would do with it.
