Warhammer Divine Throne

”My Baron, this food is already good enough. If it gets any better, those peasants might actually think they’ve become knights!” Tax Officer Gaspardon lamented, ”But even with this kind of meal, those peasants still don’t work hard. What an ungrateful bunch. Tomorrow, I’m cutting off their food supply and making them bring their own.”

”Dear Gaspardon, I believe the issue is not with the food we provide, but with how we distribute it,” Laine set his bowl aside and addressed his tax officer and steward, ”Think about it, if you were a peasant, and as long as you worked, you’d get to eat this kind of meal every day, would you want the project to last a bit longer or finish quickly?”

”Ah!” Gaspardon immediately understood, and Kasenberg instinctively rubbed his bald head, also realizing the logic behind it.

As long as working for the Lord provided such meals, it was better for the project to drag on for as long as possible. Since working resulted in the same meals, why exert more effort? Doesn’t everyone eat the same?

In this world, the minds of peasants were dull and simple; reasoning didn’t work on them. Only practical differences and distinctions stimulated them to use their full strength. Anything else was empty talk!

”Spread my orders! From tomorrow, all peasants will be divided into groups! Those who perform the fastest and best will receive meat stew and barley bread! Those who are relatively fast will eat this!” Laine put down his bowl.

”Those who are slower than the normal pace will only get the worst black bread, and the slowest group will have no food supply at all. They’ll have to bring their own food from home!”

”Yes!” Gaspardon and Kasenberg immediately accepted the orders; both the tax officer and steward felt complete admiration for the Baron’s command.

As the steward and tax officer went to arrange the matters, Laine stood alone on the hillside, contemplating some matters.

Gaspardon, an excellent tax officer, was someone sent by the Lake Fairy to aid him. He was a person of the Lake Fairy.

Kasenberg, an outstanding steward, was a talent recommended by Duke Winford. He was a person of Duke Winford.

In reality, to some degree, they were both ears and eyes sent by superiors to monitor subordinates. Laine understood this, Gaspardon understood this, and Kasenberg also understood this.

Some things required tacit understanding. Laine knew he couldn’t childishly believe that only people he trusted could be used. Instead, he needed capable and colorful individuals around him, so his superiors would feel reassured and trust him equally, both for the Lake Fairy and Duke Winford.

It’s kids who discern right from wrong; adults only see advantages and disadvantages. Laine possessed incredible strength and limitless potential. Some measures were necessary indeed. Too many human talents secretly leaned towards Chaos, and many nobles, though outwardly respectable, actually became followers of the Evil God. Vampires lurked in this land, and the people of Chaos hid in the villages. Laine guarded against others, and others guarded against him. The Lake Fairy was particularly reluctant to risk her Divine Chosen Champion being led astray.

Moreover, with such eyes and ears around, Laine’s performance could promptly let everyone know, and he could immediately show everyone his excellence. Laine had many ways to make these two wholeheartedly serve him, but wouldn’t having them willingly swear allegiance be a much more fulfilling achievement?

Halfway through his thoughts, Kasenberg suddenly returned, the bald steward panting, ”My Baron, the Lady’s envoy has arrived! Her Highness Mogiana herself has come to the Baron Gene’s Domain!”

”What?!”
