The Legendary Method Actor

Stepping into the main hall, Ray was immediately struck by a wave of genuine happiness. The interior of the Keep had been thoroughly fixed up. The cracked stone floors were leveled, the drafts had been sealed, and the old, rotting tapestries had been replaced. It was still modest compared to the estates of Solhaven, but Ray immediately noticed several familiar, historical Croft artifacts, items his parents had been forced to sell to stave off bankruptcy, proudly displayed on the walls and pedestals.

To Ray, who only held memories of the Keep in a perpetual state of depressing decay, the transformation was incredibly impactful.

He set his travel bag and the iron chest down near the grand staircase. The heavy chest hit the stone floor with a resounding, echoing THUD, causing Alistair to wince at the sheer density of the object his son had just been casually carrying.

”Go on into the study, you two. I will head to the kitchens and prepare us some food and drinks.”

Eileen said, shaking off her lingering shock and transitioning back into the role of a mother.

”Just prepare the food, Mother, and bring empty teacups. I will take care of the drinks.”

Ray requested politely.

Eileen looked at him in confusion but decided she didn’t have the mental capacity for another surprise just yet. She simply nodded and made her way toward the kitchens.

Ray followed his father down the familiar hallway, stepping into the Lord’s study.

He smiled again. The study was clean, well-lit, and smelled of polished wood rather than damp rot. Ray sat in one of the leather guest chairs across from his father’s massive desk. He noticed a small mountain of administrative documents, but they were no longer a chaotic mess of unpaid debts. They were neatly organized into categorized stacks.

Ray’s eyes scanned the refined labels:

Whisper Town - District Expansion, Deep Hills Prospecting & Mining, Timber Yields, and Agricultural Subsidies.

Alistair sat heavily in his Lord’s chair, letting out a long, exhausted breath. He looked across the desk at his son, his eyes filled with a mixture of immense pride and burning curiosity.

”So…It is the middle of the academic year, and you have returned home looking like a completely different person, escorted by a kingdom elite. Ray... why are you back?”

Alistair began gently, folding his hands on the desk.

”I will answer everything, Father, I promise, but I would prefer to wait until Mother returns so I only have to explain it once.”

Ray said smoothly, leaning back in his chair.

Alistair considered this for a moment, then nodded in understanding.

”Very well. But you mentioned outside that you had many questions regarding the domain’s transformation.”

Alistair gestured to the organized stacks of reports on his desk.

”We have a few minutes. Go ahead and ask.”

Ray let his eyes wander over the neatly organized stacks of ledgers and domain reports.

”So, how exactly did the Vance Merchant Group become the primary buyers for our domain? The warehouse in Whisper Town is staggering. I saw them buying everything from bulk items to even small amounts brought in by kids.”

Ray began, as he shifted his gaze to Alistair.

Alistair let out a soft, booming laugh, leaning back in his chair. He shook his head, a mixture of amusement and respect crossing his weathered face.

”It seems Vailes Vance is a man who prefers his actions to speak for him. He did not boast to you of his grand play?”

Ray raised an eyebrow.

”He mentioned that the Vance group had benefitted greatly from the arrangement, but he left the details incredibly vague.”

”I am not surprised, when you utilized the Vance Merchant Group to handle our debt with the Argent Hand, Vailes took the matter into his own hands. Once the negotiations were concluded, he traveled here to the Greywood Domain personally to deliver the Crown Treaty, the legally binding, kingdom-recognized document declaring House Croft entirely debt-free.”

Alistair recounted the events as he smiled.

Alistair gestured to the window overlooking the domain.

”While he was here, Lord Vance formally proposed an exclusive distributor deal. He offered to buy absolutely every product the Greywood Domain produces at a flat ten percent above the standard market rate.”

Ray’s analytical mind immediately began to break down the macro-economics of the deal. His eyes widened slightly as the pieces fell into place.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

”He secured an absolute monopoly, by paying a premium directly to us and the people, he ensured that not a single bushel of wheat or beast pelt leaves this domain through any other merchant guild. The Vance Merchant Group controls the entire kingdom-wide supply of Greywood goods. They can easily recoup that ten percent premium by controlling the pricing when they distribute our goods in the capital and beyond.”

Ray said as he realized the play the Vance Merchant Group did.

”Exactly, it is a brilliant, aggressive merchant play. But it is a symbiotic one. Our citizens are thrilled. The Vance Merchant Group are scrupulously fair, and our people are earning a genuine, comfortable living for the first time in generations. Because the people are earning a good income, they can easily afford to pay their taxes. We are taking those taxes and immediately reinvesting them into infrastructures like the roads and agricultural subsidies. Everyone wins.”

Alistair nodded, pointing a proud finger at his son.

Before Ray could compliment his father’s solid administrative logic, the door of the study clicked open.

Eileen entered, balancing a silver tray loaded with fresh, warm pastries and three empty porcelain teacups. She set the tray down gently on the edge of Alistair’s desk.

Alistair frowned slightly, looking at the empty cups.

”Did the maids forget the teapot, Eileen? Or is it still brewing?”

Eileen shook her head, an amused smile on her lips as she pointed at Ray.

”Your son asked that I only bring the cups and the food. He claimed he had the drinks entirely covered.”

”I do.”

Ray confirmed smoothly.

He reached into his Bag of Holding and pulled out a sleek, polished metal thermos. He uncorked the Bottle of Boundless Tea and leaned forward, pouring a steaming, fragrant amber liquid into all three cups.

Alistair and Eileen shared a brief, highly skeptical look.

Eileen, despite her current title as Lady Croft, had grown up as a commoner raised by a single mother. She was a deeply practical woman who knew the value of a copper coin. Enchanted thermoses designed to keep liquids warm for long journeys were relatively common among traveling merchants and adventurers. They were useful, but hardly a marvel. They both silently wondered if a slick Solhaven merchant had scammed their son into overpaying for a basic household utility.

Ray easily read the polite skepticism on their faces and chuckled.

”It is not just an insulated bottle, this artifact never accepts outside liquids. The metal itself remains cool to the touch no matter how boiling the contents are. Most importantly, it magically generates and refills itself with six cups of premium, perfectly brewed tea every single dawn.”

Ray explained, picking up his cup.

Ray reached into his bag again, he pulled it out and set a simple, unadorned band on the desk.

”This is a Ring of Warmth. While worn, it grants resistance to ice-based magic. More importantly, the wearer and everything they carry are completely unharmed by temperatures as low as negative forty-five degrees.”

Ray explained, his tone shifting slightly.

He slid the ring across the desk.

”I was hoping to give this to Corbin. Since he is stationed at the Northern Citadel, I thought it might be highly useful to him in that climate.”

Alistair picked up the ring, slipping it onto his index finger. Instantly, a subtle, comforting heat radiated through his hand and throughout his whole body.

As Alistair tried on the ring’s effect, Ray’s confident demeanor faltered. A troubled, hesitant expression crossed his face.

”I need a favor regarding this, Father. I need you to send it to him, but... please do not tell Corbin that it came from me. Tell him it is a gift from you and Mother. I fear he might not accept it if he knows I bought it.”

Ray said quietly, averting his gaze slightly.

Alistair paused, the comforting heat of the ring contrasting sharply with the sudden, dull ache forming in his temples. He looked at his youngest son’s guarded expression and let out a heavy, internal sigh.

He knew all too well that Corbin harbored deep, lingering resentment toward Ray. For years, the family’s meager resources and attention had been entirely consumed to help Ray fight the ‘Wasting Sickness,’ leaving Corbin to shoulder heavy family burdens and is now in the freezing north staking his life for coin and for the honor of House Croft. Alistair felt a pang of profound parental guilt; he had let the gap between his sons fester, passively letting the resentment build without doing anything to bridge it.

Alistair shook his head, understanding exactly why Ray had made the request.

”I understand, Ray. I will make sure your brother gets this with the next supply run, discreetly.”

Alistair said softly, slipping the ring off his finger.

Alistair glanced to his side and saw Eileen watching the exchange. Her eyes were filled with a quiet, maternal sorrow, a heartbreaking pity that her two boys were so deeply estranged, and a silent plea that this fracture could somehow be mended. Alistair met her gaze and gave her a firm, reassuring nod, silently promising her that he would take care of it.

Alistair tucked the ring safely into a lockbox in his desk drawer, clearing his throat to intentionally shift the heavy atmosphere in the room.

”It is a very thoughtful gift, son. Now, what else is in that bag?”

Alistair said, forcing a lighter tone.

Ray’s smile slowly returned. He reached into his Bag of Holding once more and pulled out the Pipe of Remembrance. He handed the beautifully crafted wooden pipe, with its smooth river stone bowl, across the desk to his father.

”A pipe?”

Alistair asked, admiring the craftsmanship.

”When lit, the smoke it produces does not dissipate. Instead, it condenses and projects a moving, three-dimensional image of whatever memory the bearer is currently focusing on. Try it.”

Ray explained softly.

Deeply intrigued, Alistair accepted the pipe and opened a small drawer in his desk and pulled out a pinch of premium loose-leaf tobacco. He carefully packed the river stone bowl, struck a match, and lit the pipe. He took a slow, deep draw, closed his eyes in concentration, and exhaled a thick, white plume of smoke over the center of the desk.

Just as Ray described, the smoke did not thin or vanish into the air.

It swirled rapidly, pulling together into a dense, glowing cloud before shaping itself into a vivid, miniature scene. The smoke took on the forms of a young Alistair and Eileen, standing hand in hand beneath an arbor of flowers. The smoky figures smiled at one another, their faces radiating pure, unadulterated joy as they exchanged their wedding vows.

Eileen gasped. Her hands flew to her mouth as she stared at the perfect recreation of one of the happiest days of her life. She immediately stepped around the desk, grabbing Alistair’s arm and leaning her head heavily against his shoulder.

Alistair kept the pipe clenched in his teeth, his eyes shining with profound emotion as he watched the memory play out.

Ray sat quietly, watching the illusion with a soft smile. It was his first time seeing the scene, and it gave him a beautiful glimpse into the deep, enduring love that anchored his parents together.

After a couple of minutes, the scene concluded, and the smoke finally lost its magical cohesion, dissipating harmlessly into the study’s air.

Alistair carefully set the pipe down on his desk.

”Thank you, son. That is... that is a truly magnificent gift.”

He said as he looked at Ray, his voice thick with emotion.

”I am glad you like it, but I did not forget about you, Mother.”

Ray said. He then turned his attention to his mother.
